RENOWNED ARTIST, DONALD SULTAN, IN CONVERSATION WITH ARTIST AND EDUCATOR JOHN TORREANO Filmed at The Art Barge in Amagansett, NY July 20, 2016 Donald Sultan rose to prominence as a painter, sculptor, and printmaker during New York’s downtown renaissance in the 1970s. He is particularly well known for large-scale still life paintings, which are simultaneously abstract and representational, and for being among the first to use industrial materials such as tar, enamel, spackle, and vinyl tiles. He has exhibited in important museums all over the world and his works are featured in permanent collections of over 50 major museums throughout the world, including the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, and more. John Torreano has been clinical professor of studio art at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at  New York University since 1992 and is currently director of the MFA in Studio Art Program. As an artist, he is known for utilizing faceted gems in a variety of mediums in order to create “movement oriented perception” in his works. Torreano has worked in a variety of mediums and methods and his works have been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and many others.
