Dr. Joanne Liu is the International President of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), otherwise known as Doctors without Borders. She is a Canadian Pediatrician by training and has been with MSF for almost her entire career. She became the international head of MSF in 2013. We spoke not long after she visited MSF's operations in a stretch of land in Bangladesh called Cox's Bazar. This is where hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees have fled from neighboring Myanmar in recent months and it is the site of one of the world's most urgent global humanitarian emergencies. Dr. Liu discusses the conditions there--and the kind of unique medical needs that stem from having such a massive population displacement in such a short period of time. We also discuss MSF's history--including how it gained a reputation as one of the more fearless global humanitarian organizations. And we also discuss some of the current big challenges facing MSF, including a seeming increase in the number of attacks on humanitarian and health facilities around the world. Dr. Liu tells a few very powerful stories, including a recent visit to a detention center for African migrants in Libya a place she calls \"the most inhuman incarnation of men's cruelty\" We also discuss in detail a tragedy that befell MSF in October 2015 when US fighter jets bombed an MSF hospital in Afghanistan, killing many of her colleagues. Iâm Barney Burnham with the news from the Rivet World Desk in the U-K. 22 people from the humanitarian organization were killed in the bombing. Reportedly the attack came from U.S. fighter jets. U.S. officials say the situation still remains murky and U.S. President Barack Obama and Afghanistanâs president Ashrf Ghani promised they would investigate incident. Doctors without Borders has issued a statement saying that itâs a clear assumption that a war crime has been committed. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says he needs a multi-country coalition or he fears the whole country will be destroyed. al-Assad ideally wants a coalition between Russia, Syria, Iran and Iraq and made a point to criticize the U.S.-led coalition and its airstrikes targeting the Islamic State Militant Group within the region. He went on to tell the Iranian state television station the coalition would produce practical results. And finally, top officials in the German government say the country needs to close its borders and take in fewer refugees. Reuters reports Chancellor Angela Merkelâs conservative say they cannot adequately handle the more than 800 thousand refugees coming into the country this year. Merkelâs told the press on multiple occasions she wonât put up fences around Germanyâs borders, calling the tactic âpointless. But members of the Christian Social Union believe that closing borders is the only way to keep a well-functioning country. And thatâs the news from the Rivet World Desk in the U-K. “They know they’re going to die, and they’re choosing to stay behind anyway.” In an interview with Anderson Cooper on CNN, Emily Callahan, a nurse with Doctors Without Borders, describes her experience working with the doctors and nurses in the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza.
