Online Multiple Target Tracking (MTT) is often addressed within the tracking-by-detection paradigm. Detections are previously extracted independently in each frame and then objects trajectories are built by maximizing specifically designed coherence functions. Nevertheless, ambiguities arise in presence of occlusions or detection errors. In this paper we claim that the ambiguities in tracking could be solved by a selective use of the features, by working with more reliable features if possible and exploiting a deeper representation of the target only if necessary. To this end, we propose an online divide and conquer tracker for static camera scenes, which partitions the assignment problem in local subproblems and solves them by selectively choosing and combining the best features. The complete framework is cast as a structural learning task that unifies these phases and learns tracker parameters from examples. Experiments on two different datasets highlights a significant improvement of tracking performances (MOTA +10%) over the state of the art.

We study an Ising model in a network with disorder induced by the presence of both attractive and repulsive links. This system is subjected to a subthreshold signal, and the goal is to see how the response is enhanced for a given fraction of repulsive links. This can model a network of spin-like neurons with excitatory and inhibitory couplings. By means of numerical simulations and analytical calculations we find that there is an optimal probability, such that the coherent response is maximal.

But today, even though those maps are manipulated more than ever in favor of one political party, partisan gerrymandering is still technically legal. We study the accuracy of the divide-and-conquer method for electronic structure calculations. The analysis is conducted for a prototypical subdomain problem in the method. We prove that the pointwise difference between electron densities of the global system and the subsystem decays exponentially as a function of the distance away from the boundary of the subsystem, under the gap assumption of both the global system and the subsystem. We show that gap assumption is crucial for the accuracy of the divide-and-conquer method by numerical examples. In particular, we show examples with the loss of accuracy when the gap assumption of the subsystem is invalid.

We propose a first data-driven tuning procedure for divide-and-conquer kernel ridge regression (Zhang et al., 2015). While the proposed criterion is computationally scalable for massive data sets, it is also shown to be asymptotically optimal under mild conditions. The effectiveness of our method is illustrated by extensive simulations and an application to Million Song Dataset.

The algorithm divides the entries of the table modulo powers of $2$, and samples a corresponding binary contingency table at each level. The sampling distribution is based on the Boltzmann sampling heuristic, along with probabilistic divide-and-conquer.

This paper focuses on automated synthesis of divide-and-conquer parallelism, which is a common parallel programming skeleton supported by many cross-platform multithreaded libraries. The challenges of producing (manually or automatically) a correct divide-and-conquer parallel program from a given sequential code are two-fold: (1) assuming that individual worker threads execute a code identical to the sequential code, the programmer has to provide the extra code for dividing the tasks and combining the computation results, and (2) sometimes, the sequential code may not be usable as is, and may need to be modified by the programmer. We address both challenges in this paper. We present an automated synthesis technique for the case where no modifications to the sequential code are required, and we propose an algorithm for modifying the sequential code to make it suitable for parallelization when some modification is necessary. The paper presents theoretical results for when this {\em modification} is efficiently possible, and experimental evaluation of the technique and the quality of the produced parallel programs.

In this paper, we propose a novel strategy which is designed to enhance the accuracy of the parser by simplifying complex sentences before parsing. This approach involves the separate parsing of the constituent sub-sentences within a complex sentence. To achieve that, the divide-and-conquer strategy first disambiguates the roles of the link words in the sentence and segments the sentence based on these roles. The separate parse trees of the segmented sub-sentences and the noun phrases within them are then synthesized to form the final parse. To evaluate the effects of this strategy on parsing, we compare the original performance of a dependency parser with the performance when it is enhanced with the divide-and-conquer strategy. When tested on 600 sentences of the IPSM'95 data sets, the enhanced parser saw a considerable error reduction of 21.2% in its accuracy.

It is common to view programs as a combination of logic and control: the logic part defines what the program must do, the control part -- how to do it. The Logic Programming paradigm was developed with the intention of separating the logic from the control. Recently, extensive research has been conducted on automatic generation of control for logic programs. Only a few of these works considered the issue of automatic generation of control for improving the efficiency of logic programs. In this paper we present a novel algorithm for automatic finding of lowest-cost subgoal orderings. The algorithm works using the divide-and-conquer strategy. The given set of subgoals is partitioned into smaller sets, based on co-occurrence of free variables. The subsets are ordered recursively and merged, yielding a provably optimal order. We experimentally demonstrate the utility of the algorithm by testing it in several domains, and discuss the possibilities of its cooperation with other existing methods.

Many natural simulation tasks, such as generating a partition of a large integer $n$, choosing uniformly over the $p_n$ conceivable choices, might be done by proposing a random object from a larger set, and then checking for membership in the desired target set. The success probability, i.e., the probability that a proposed random object hits the target, may be very small. The cost of this simple strategy, waiting-to-get-lucky, is the reciprocal of the small probability. The usual method of rare event simulation, the exponential shift or Cram\'er twist, is analogous to the saddle point method, and can remove the exponentially decaying part of the success probability. But even after this, the success probability may still be so small as to be an obstacle to simulation. Here, we propose a new method, probabilistic divide-and-conquer, for dealing with the remaining small probability. For the example of integer partitions, there is an ideal recursive scheme, which improves the remaining cost from asymptotically order $n^{3/4}$ to O(1). There are other examples, including $k$-cores, set partitions, and plane partitions, for which there is no recursive scheme, but nevertheless a one-time application of divide-and-conquer, with a "trivial second half," removes a substantial fraction of the remaining cost. The cost of traditional sampling is linear in the number of samples. Another variation of the probabilistic divide-and-conquer idea exploits features of the coupon collector's problem, and has cost that is sublinear in the number of samples.

A new method is presented for the deductive synthesis of computer programs. The method takes as given a formal specification of a user's problem. The specification is allowed to be incomplete in that some or all of the input conditions may be omitted. A completed specification plus a computer program are produced by the method. Synthesis involves the top-down decomposition of the user's problem into a hierarchy of subproblems. Solving each of these subproblems results in the synthesis of a hierarchically structured program. The program is guaranteed to satisfy the completed specification and to terminate on all legal inputs. In this paper we present a framework for a top-down synthesis process, explore the structure of a class of divide and conquer algorithms, and present a method for the top-down synthesis of algorithms in this class. Detailed derivations of four sorting algorithms are presented. (Author)
