We study an Ising model in a network with disorder induced by the presence of both attractive and repulsive links. This system is subjected to a subthreshold signal, and the goal is to see how the response is enhanced for a given fraction of repulsive links. By means of numerical simulations and analytical calculations we find that there is an optimal probability, such that the coherent response is maximal.

Many natural simulation tasks, such as generating a partition of a large integer $n$, choosing uniformly over the $p_n$ conceivable choices, might be done by proposing a random object from a larger set, and then checking for membership in the desired target set. The success probability, i.e., the probability that a proposed random object hits the target, may be very small. The cost of this simple strategy, waiting-to-get-lucky, is the reciprocal of the small probability. The usual method of rare event simulation, the exponential shift or Cram\'er twist, is analogous to the saddle point method, and can remove the exponentially decaying part of the success probability. But even after this, the success probability may still be so small as to be an obstacle to simulation. Here, we propose a new method, probabilistic divide-and-conquer, for dealing with the remaining small probability. For the example of integer partitions, there is an ideal recursive scheme, which improves the remaining cost from asymptotically order $n^{3/4}$ to O(1). There are other examples, including $k$-cores, set partitions, and plane partitions, for which there is no recursive scheme, but nevertheless a one-time application of divide-and-conquer, with a "trivial second half," removes a substantial fraction of the remaining cost. The cost of traditional sampling is linear in the number of samples. Another variation of the probabilistic divide-and-conquer idea exploits features of the coupon collector's problem, and has cost that is sublinear in the number of samples.

The Logic Programming paradigm was developed with the intention of separating the logic from the control. Recently, extensive research has been conducted on automatic generation of control for logic programs. In this paper we present a novel algorithm for automatic finding of lowest-cost subgoal orderings. The algorithm works using the divide-and-conquer strategy. The given set of subgoals is partitioned into smaller sets, based on co-occurrence of free variables. The subsets are ordered recursively and merged, yielding a provably optimal order. We experimentally demonstrate the utility of the algorithm by testing it in several domains, and discuss the possibilities of its cooperation with other existing methods.

The contribution of our paper is Brandes++, an algorithm for exact efficient computation of betweenness centrality. The crux of our algorithm is that we create a sketch of the graph, that we call the skeleton, by replacing subgraphs with simpler graph structures. Depending on the underlying graph structure, using this skeleton and by keeping appropriate summaries Brandes++ we can achieve significantly low running times in our computations. Extensive experimental evaluation on real life datasets demonstrate the efficacy of our algorithm for different types of graphs. We release our code for benefit of the research community.

The crux of our algorithm is that we create a sketch of the graph, that we call the skeleton, by replacing subgraphs with simpler graph structures. Depending on the underlying graph structure, using this skeleton and by keeping appropriate summaries Brandes++ we can achieve significantly low running times in our computations. Extensive experimental evaluation on real life datasets demonstrate the efficacy of our algorithm for different types of graphs. We release our code for benefit of the research community.

This study presents a divide-and-conquer (DC) approach based on feature space decomposition for classification. When large-scale datasets are present, typical approaches usually employed truncated kernel methods on the feature space or DC approaches on the sample space. However, this did not guarantee separability between classes, owing to overfitting. To overcome such problems, this work proposes a novel DC approach on feature spaces consisting of three steps. Firstly, we divide the feature space into several subspaces using the decomposition method proposed in this paper. Subsequently, these feature subspaces are sent into individual local classifiers for training. Finally, the outcomes of local classifiers are fused together to generate the final classification results. Experiments on large-scale datasets are carried out for performance evaluation. The results show that the error rates of the proposed DC method decreased comparing with the state-of-the-art fast SVM solvers, e.g., reducing error rates by 10.53% and 7.53% on RCV1 and covtype datasets respectively.

The difference of these two versions lies in using different HSS construction algorithms, one (denoted by {ADC1}) uses a structured low-rank approximation method and the other ({ADC2}) uses a randomized HSS construction algorithm. For the ADC2 algorithm, a method is proposed to estimate the off-diagonal rank. Numerous experiments have been done to show their stability and efficiency. These algorithms are implemented in parallel in a shared memory environment, and some parallel implementation details are included. Comparing the ADCs with highly optimized multithreaded libraries such as Intel MKL, we find that ADCs could be more than 6x times faster for some large matrices with few deflations.

In this paper, we propose a novel strategy which is designed to enhance the accuracy of the parser by simplifying complex sentences before parsing. This approach involves the separate parsing of the constituent sub-sentences within a complex sentence. To achieve that, the divide-and-conquer strategy first disambiguates the roles of the link words in the sentence and segments the sentence based on these roles. The separate parse trees of the segmented sub-sentences and the noun phrases within them are then synthesized to form the final parse. To evaluate the effects of this strategy on parsing, we compare the original performance of a dependency parser with the performance when it is enhanced with the divide-and-conquer strategy. When tested on 600 sentences of the IPSM'95 data sets, the enhanced parser saw a considerable error reduction of 21.2% in its accuracy.
