In this paper, an efficient divide-and-conquer (DC) algorithm is proposed for the symmetric tridiagonal matrices based on ScaLAPACK and the hierarchically semiseparable (HSS) matrices. HSS is an important type of rank-structured matrices.Most time of the DC algorithm is cost by computing the eigenvectors via the matrix-matrix multiplications (MMM). In our parallel hybrid DC (PHDC) algorithm, MMM is accelerated by using the HSS matrix techniques when the intermediate matrix is large. All the HSS algorithms are done via the package STRUMPACK. PHDC has been tested by using many different matrices. Compared with the DC implementation in MKL, PHDC can be faster for some matrices with few deflations when using hundreds of processes. However, the gains decrease as the number of processes increases. The comparisons of PHDC with ELPA (the Eigenvalue soLvers for Petascale Applications library) are similar. PHDC is usually slower than MKL and ELPA when using 300 or more processes on Tianhe-2 supercomputer.

In this paper, we present a generalized Cuppen's divide-and-conquer algorithm for the symmetric tridiagonal eigenproblem. We extend the Cuppen's work to the rank two modifications of the form $A =T +\beta_1\bw_1\bw_1^T + \beta_2\bw_2\bw_2^T$, where $T$ is a block tridiagonal matrix having three blocks. We introduce a new deflation technique and obtain a secular equation, for which the distribution of eigenvalues is nontrivial. We present a way to count the number of eigenvalues in each subinterval. It turns out that each subinterval contains either none, one or two eigenvalues. Furthermore, computing eigenvectors preserving the orthogonality are also suggested. Some numerical results, showing our algorithm can calculate the eigenvalue twice as fast as the Cuppen's divide-and-conquer algorithm, are included.

Online Multiple Target Tracking (MTT) is often addressed within the tracking-by-detection paradigm. Detections are previously extracted independently in each frame and then objects trajectories are built by maximizing specifically designed coherence functions. Nevertheless, ambiguities arise in presence of occlusions or detection errors. In this paper we claim that the ambiguities in tracking could be solved by a selective use of the features, by working with more reliable features if possible and exploiting a deeper representation of the target only if necessary. To this end, we propose an online divide and conquer tracker for static camera scenes, which partitions the assignment problem in local subproblems and solves them by selectively choosing and combining the best features. The complete framework is cast as a structural learning task that unifies these phases and learns tracker parameters from examples. Experiments on two different datasets highlights a significant improvement of tracking performances (MOTA +10%) over the state of the art.

Identification of local structure in intensive data -- such as time series, images, and higher dimensional processes -- is an important problem in astronomy. Since the data are typically generated by an inhomogeneous Poisson process, an appropriate model is one that partitions the data space into cells, each of which is described by a homogeneous (constant event rate) Poisson process. It is key that the sizes and locations of the cells are determined by the data, and are not predefined or even constrained to be evenly spaced. For one-dimensional time series, the method amounts to Bayesian changepoint detection. Three approaches to solving the multiple changepoint problem are sketched, based on: (1) divide and conquer with single changepoints, (2) maximum posterior for the number of changepoints, and (3) cell coalescence. The last method starts from the Voronoi tessellation of the data, and thus should easily generalize to spaces of higher dimension.

We present a probabilistic divide-and-conquer (PDC) method for \emph{exact} sampling of conditional distributions of the form $\mathcal{L}( {\bf X}\, |\, {\bf X} \in E)$, where ${\bf X}$ is a random variable on $\mathcal{X}$, a complete, separable metric space, and event $E$ with $\mathbb{P}(E) \geq 0$ is assumed to have sufficient regularity such that the conditional distribution exists and is unique up to almost sure equivalence. The PDC approach is to define a decomposition of $\mathcal{X}$ via sets $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ such that $\mathcal{X} = \mathcal{A} \times \mathcal{B}$, and sample from each separately. The deterministic second half approach is to select the sets $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ such that for each element $a\in \mathcal{A}$, there is only one element $b_a \in \mathcal{B}$ for which $(a,b_a)\in E$. We show how this simple approach provides non-trivial improvements to several conventional random sampling algorithms in combinatorics, and we demonstrate its versatility with applications to sampling from sufficiently regular conditional distributions.

An efficient method is proposed to solve the eigenproblem of N by N Symmetric Tridiagonal (ST) matrices. Unlike the standard eigensolvers which necessitate O(N cubed) operations to compute the eigenvectors of such ST matrices, the proposed method computes both the eigenvalues and eigenvectors with only O(N squared) operations. The method is based on serial implementation of the recently introduced Divide and Conquer (DC) algorithm. It exploits the fact that by O(N squared) of DC operations, one can compute the eigenvalues of N by N ST matrix and a finite number of pairs of successive rows of its eigenvector matrix. The rest of the eigenvectors--all of them or one at a time--are computed by linear three-term recurrence relations. Numerical examples are presented which demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method by saving an order of magnitude in execution time at the expense of sacrificing a few orders of accuracy.

In this paper, two accelerated divide-and-conquer algorithms are proposed for the symmetric tridiagonal eigenvalue problem, which cost $O(N^2r)$ {flops} in the worst case, where $N$ is the dimension of the matrix and $r$ is a modest number depending on the distribution of eigenvalues. Both of these algorithms use hierarchically semiseparable (HSS) matrices to approximate some intermediate eigenvector matrices which are Cauchy-like matrices and are off-diagonally low-rank. The difference of these two versions lies in using different HSS construction algorithms, one (denoted by {ADC1}) uses a structured low-rank approximation method and the other ({ADC2}) uses a randomized HSS construction algorithm. For the ADC2 algorithm, a method is proposed to estimate the off-diagonal rank. Numerous experiments have been done to show their stability and efficiency. These algorithms are implemented in parallel in a shared memory environment, and some parallel implementation details are included. Comparing the ADCs with highly optimized multithreaded libraries such as Intel MKL, we find that ADCs could be more than 6x times faster for some large matrices with few deflations.

In this paper, we propose a novel strategy which is designed to enhance the accuracy of the parser by simplifying complex sentences before parsing. This approach involves the separate parsing of the constituent sub-sentences within a complex sentence. To achieve that, the divide-and-conquer strategy first disambiguates the roles of the link words in the sentence and segments the sentence based on these roles. The separate parse trees of the segmented sub-sentences and the noun phrases within them are then synthesized to form the final parse. To evaluate the effects of this strategy on parsing, we compare the original performance of a dependency parser with the performance when it is enhanced with the divide-and-conquer strategy. When tested on 600 sentences of the IPSM'95 data sets, the enhanced parser saw a considerable error reduction of 21.2% in its accuracy.

"Divide and Conquer," Chapter III of Frank Capra's "Why We Fight" series, begins with Britain and France's declaration of war on Germany after Hitler's invasion of Poland. Divide and Conquer (DC) is conceptually well suited to high-dimensional optimization by decomposing a problem into multiple small-scale sub-problems. However, appealing performance can be seldom observed when the sub-problems are interdependent. This paper suggests that the major difficulty of tackling interdependent sub-problems lies in the precise evaluation of a partial solution (to a sub-problem), which can be overwhelmingly costly and thus makes sub-problems non-trivial to conquer. Thus, we propose an approximation approach, named Divide and Approximate Conquer (DAC), which reduces the cost of partial solution evaluation from exponential time to polynomial time. Meanwhile, the convergence to the global optimum (of the original problem) is still guaranteed. The effectiveness of DAC is demonstrated empirically on two sets of non-separable high-dimensional problems.

It is a very robust finding that certain cognitive functions are strongly lateralized in the human brain, eliciting predominantly right hemispheric or left hemispheric activation. The most extensively studied (typically left) lateralized function is language (Knecht et al., 2000; Willemin et al., 2016). Some typical right lateralized functions include (holistic) face processing (Calvo & Beltrán, 2014) and spatial attention (Fink et al., 2000; Jansen et al., 2006). In this study we are testing a prominent hypothesis on the putative advantage of functional cerebral asymmetries (FCA's), namely the enhancement of parallel processing (Levy, 1969; Rogers, 2000). The exact origins of functional segregation in the human brain remain a debated topic, the theory on lateralization and parallel processing argues that by predominantly engaging one hemisphere for a certain set of functions, and the other for another set of functions, the workload can be divided over the two cerebral hemispheres in order to allow humans to more efficiently engage in multitasking. One would expect that parallel processing is better when the two tasks can be executed by different hemispheres, as the workload can be divided. This study aims to answer the question: ‘Are humans better at multitasking (task switching) when both tasks are predominantly executed by opposing hemispheres?’ As we will use task switching in this experiment, we will refer to the situation where both tasks are processed by the same hemisphere as ‘ipsilateral task switching’ or ‘ipsilateral switches’. We will refer to the situation in which the two tasks are processed by opposing hemispheres as ‘contralateral task switching’ or ‘contralateral switches’. In addition to differences between ipsilateral and contralateral switches, we will investigate a potential difference between contralateral homotopic switches (switching from a task that elicits activity in one hemisphere to a task that elicits activity in the same area but in the opposite hemisphere) and contralateral heterotopic switches (switching from a task that elicits activity in one hemisphere to a task that activates a different area in the opposite hemisphere) In order to answer these research questions we will use a task switching paradigm that includes three tasks: 1. A lexical decision (LD) task, which in right handed participants, predominantly elicits neural activity in the fusiform area of the left hemisphere - visual word form area VWFA. A face processing (FP) task, which in right handed participants, predominantly elicits neural activity in the fusiform area of the right hemisphere - fusiform face area FFA, contralateral homologue of VWFA. A landmark (LM) task, which in right handed participants, predominantly elicits neural activity in the posterior parietal cortex of the right hemisphere (Seydell-Greenwald et al., 2019). Pure FP condition: this condition includes face recognition trials only (no other tasks or task switching) 3. As the landmark task primarily activates right parietal areas, this condition will provide us with a measure of interference that results from contralateral heterotopic switches. Should we observe the hypothesised differences, then we should rule out the possible explanation of pre-existing differences in task difficulty. For example, greater interference due to task switching in the LM_FP condition compared to the LD_FP condition might be interpreted as evidence that parallel processing is facilitated when both tasks are preferentially processed by a different hemisphere. An alternative explanation might be that the landmark task is simply more challenging than the lexical decision task and hence causes more interference. To address this potential problem, we will verify that the three tasks are similar in difficulty by comparing performance in the three ‘pure’ conditions.

The key requirement for harnessing the quantum properties of light is the capability to detect and count individual photons. Of particular interest are photon-number-resolving detectors, which allow one to determine whether a state of light is classical or genuinely quantum. Existing schemes for addressing this challenge rely on a proportional conversion of photons to electrons. As such, they are capable of correctly characterizing small photon fluxes, yet are limited by uncertainties in the conversion rate. In this work, we employ a divide-and-conquer approach to overcome these limitations by transforming the incident fields into uniform distributions that readily lend themselves for characterization by standard on-off detectors. Since the exact statistics of the light stream are obtained from the click statistics, our technique is freely scalable to accommodate - in principle - arbitrarily large photon fluxes. Our experiments pave the way towards genuine integrated photon-number-resolving detectors for advanced on-chip photonic quantum networks.
