This paper focuses on automated synthesis of divide-and-conquer parallelism, which is a common parallel programming skeleton supported by many cross-platform multithreaded libraries. The challenges of producing (manually or automatically) a correct divide-and-conquer parallel program from a given sequential code are two-fold: (1) assuming that individual worker threads execute a code identical to the sequential code, the programmer has to provide the extra code for dividing the tasks and combining the computation results, and (2) sometimes, the sequential code may not be usable as is, and may need to be modified by the programmer. We address both challenges in this paper. We present an automated synthesis technique for the case where no modifications to the sequential code are required, and we propose an algorithm for modifying the sequential code to make it suitable for parallelization when some modification is necessary. The paper presents theoretical results for when this {\em modification} is efficiently possible, and experimental evaluation of the technique and the quality of the produced parallel programs.

In this paper, an efficient divide-and-conquer (DC) algorithm is proposed for the symmetric tridiagonal matrices based on ScaLAPACK and the hierarchically semiseparable (HSS) matrices. HSS is an important type of rank-structured matrices.Most time of the DC algorithm is cost by computing the eigenvectors via the matrix-matrix multiplications (MMM). In our parallel hybrid DC (PHDC) algorithm, MMM is accelerated by using the HSS matrix techniques when the intermediate matrix is large. All the HSS algorithms are done via the package STRUMPACK. PHDC has been tested by using many different matrices. Compared with the DC implementation in MKL, PHDC can be faster for some matrices with few deflations when using hundreds of processes. However, the gains decrease as the number of processes increases. The comparisons of PHDC with ELPA (the Eigenvalue soLvers for Petascale Applications library) are similar. PHDC is usually slower than MKL and ELPA when using 300 or more processes on Tianhe-2 supercomputer.

In this paper, we present a generalized Cuppen's divide-and-conquer algorithm for the symmetric tridiagonal eigenproblem. We extend the Cuppen's work to the rank two modifications of the form $A =T +\beta_1\bw_1\bw_1^T + \beta_2\bw_2\bw_2^T$, where $T$ is a block tridiagonal matrix having three blocks. We introduce a new deflation technique and obtain a secular equation, for which the distribution of eigenvalues is nontrivial. We present a way to count the number of eigenvalues in each subinterval. It turns out that each subinterval contains either none, one or two eigenvalues. Furthermore, computing eigenvectors preserving the orthogonality are also suggested. Some numerical results, showing our algorithm can calculate the eigenvalue twice as fast as the Cuppen's divide-and-conquer algorithm, are included.

Online Multiple Target Tracking (MTT) is often addressed within the tracking-by-detection paradigm. Detections are previously extracted independently in each frame and then objects trajectories are built by maximizing specifically designed coherence functions. Nevertheless, ambiguities arise in presence of occlusions or detection errors. In this paper we claim that the ambiguities in tracking could be solved by a selective use of the features, by working with more reliable features if possible and exploiting a deeper representation of the target only if necessary. To this end, we propose an online divide and conquer tracker for static camera scenes, which partitions the assignment problem in local subproblems and solves them by selectively choosing and combining the best features. The complete framework is cast as a structural learning task that unifies these phases and learns tracker parameters from examples. Experiments on two different datasets highlights a significant improvement of tracking performances (MOTA +10%) over the state of the art.

The problem of efficiently computing the betweenness centrality of nodes has been researched extensively. To date, the best known exact and centralized algorithm for this task is an algorithm proposed in 2001 by Brandes. The contribution of our paper is Brandes++, an algorithm for exact efficient computation of betweenness centrality. The crux of our algorithm is that we create a sketch of the graph, that we call the skeleton, by replacing subgraphs with simpler graph structures. Depending on the underlying graph structure, using this skeleton and by keeping appropriate summaries Brandes++ we can achieve significantly low running times in our computations. Extensive experimental evaluation on real life datasets demonstrate the efficacy of our algorithm for different types of graphs. We release our code for benefit of the research community.

Online Social Networks (OSNs) have exploded in terms of scale and scope over the last few years. The unprecedented growth of these networks present challenges in terms of system design and maintenance. One way to cope with this is by partitioning such large networks and assigning these partitions to different machines. However, social networks possess unique properties that make the partitioning problem non-trivial. The main contribution of this paper is to understand different properties of social networks and how these properties can guide the choice of a partitioning algorithm. Using large scale measurements representing real OSNs, we first characterize different properties of social networks, and then we evaluate qualitatively different partitioning methods that cover the design space. We expose different trade-offs involved and understand them in light of properties of social networks. We show that a judicious choice of a partitioning scheme can help improve performance.

In this paper, we propose a novel strategy which is designed to enhance the accuracy of the parser by simplifying complex sentences before parsing. This approach involves the separate parsing of the constituent sub-sentences within a complex sentence. To achieve that, the divide-and-conquer strategy first disambiguates the roles of the link words in the sentence and segments the sentence based on these roles. The separate parse trees of the segmented sub-sentences and the noun phrases within them are then synthesized to form the final parse. To evaluate the effects of this strategy on parsing, we compare the original performance of a dependency parser with the performance when it is enhanced with the divide-and-conquer strategy. When tested on 600 sentences of the IPSM'95 data sets, the enhanced parser saw a considerable error reduction of 21.2% in its accuracy.

Divide-and-conquer functions satisfy equations in F(z),F(z^2),F(z^4)... Their generated sequences are mainly used in computer science, and they were analyzed pragmatically, that is, now and then a sequence was picked out for scrutiny. By giving several classes of ordinary generating functions together with recurrences, we hope to help with the analysis of many such sequences, and try to classify a part of the divide-and-conquer sequence zoo.

The complexity of divide-and-conqure algorithms is often described by recurrence relations of the form T(n) = kT(n/c) + f(n). The only method currently available for solving such recurrences consists of solution tables for fixed functions f and varying k and c. In this note we describe a unifying method for solving these recurrences that is both general in applicability and easy to apply without the use of large tables.

Classification of large grass genome sequences has major challenges in functional genomes. The presence of motifs in grass genome chains can make the prediction of the functional behavior of grass genome possible. The correlation between grass genome properties and their motifs is not always obvious, since more than one motif may exist within a genome chain. Due to the complexity of this association most pattern classification algorithms are either vain or time consuming. Attempted to a reduction of high dimensional data that utilizes DAC technique is presented. Data are disjoining into equal multiple sets while preserving the original data distribution in each set. Then, multiple modules are created by using the data sets as independent training sets and classified into respective modules. Finally, the modules are combined to produce the final classification rules, containing all the previously extracted information. The methodology is tested using various grass genome data sets. Results indicate that the time efficiency of our algorithm is improved compared to other known data mining algorithms.

Scoping review of the different methods of cluster sepsis, with special emphasis on the use of machine learning algorithms, artificial intelligence and their possible use in treatment.

In this paper, two accelerated divide-and-conquer algorithms are proposed for the symmetric tridiagonal eigenvalue problem, which cost $O(N^2r)$ {flops} in the worst case, where $N$ is the dimension of the matrix and $r$ is a modest number depending on the distribution of eigenvalues. Both of these algorithms use hierarchically semiseparable (HSS) matrices to approximate some intermediate eigenvector matrices which are Cauchy-like matrices and are off-diagonally low-rank. The difference of these two versions lies in using different HSS construction algorithms, one (denoted by {ADC1}) uses a structured low-rank approximation method and the other ({ADC2}) uses a randomized HSS construction algorithm. For the ADC2 algorithm, a method is proposed to estimate the off-diagonal rank. Numerous experiments have been done to show their stability and efficiency. These algorithms are implemented in parallel in a shared memory environment, and some parallel implementation details are included. Comparing the ADCs with highly optimized multithreaded libraries such as Intel MKL, we find that ADCs could be more than 6x times faster for some large matrices with few deflations.
