3NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19910008345: One Shot Methods For Optimal Control Of Distributed Parameter Systems 1: Finite Dimensional Control
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The efficient numerical treatment of optimal control problems governed by elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) and systems of elliptic PDEs, where the control is finite dimensional is discussed. Distributed control as well as boundary control cases are discussed. The main characteristic of the new methods is that they are designed to solve the full optimization problem directly, rather than accelerating a descent method by an efficient multigrid solver for the equations involved. The methods use the adjoint state in order to achieve efficient smoother and a robust coarsening strategy. The main idea is the treatment of the control variables on appropriate scales, i.e., control variables that correspond to smooth functions are solved for on coarse grids depending on the smoothness of these functions. Solution of the control problems is achieved with the cost of solving the constraint equations about two to three times (by a multigrid solver). Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the method proposed in distributed control case, pointwise control and boundary control problems.

4NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19800010491: The Reduced Order Model Problem In Distributed Parameter Systems Adaptive Identification And Control
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The research concerning the reduced order model problem in distributed parameter systems is reported. The adaptive control strategy was chosen for investigation in the annular momentum control device. It is noted, that if there is no observation spill over, and no model errors, an indirect adaptive control strategy can be globally stable. Recent publications concerning adaptive control are included.

5NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19940010150: Applications Of Computer Algebra To Distributed Parameter Systems
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
In the analysis of vibrations of continuous elastic systems, one often encounters complicated transcendental equations with roots directly related to the system's natural frequencies. Typically, these equations contain system parameters whose values must be specified before a numerical solution can be obtained. The present paper presents a method whereby the fundamental frequency can be obtained in analytical form to any desired degree of accuracy. The method is based upon truncation of rapidly converging series involving inverse powers of the system natural frequencies. A straightforward method to developing these series and summing them in closed form is presented. It is demonstrated how Computer Algebra can be exploited to perform the intricate analytical procedures which otherwise would render the technique difficult to apply in practice. We illustrate the method by developing two analytical approximations to the fundamental frequency of a vibrating cantilever carrying a rigid tip body. The results are compared to the numerical solution of the exact (transcendental) frequency equation over a range of system parameters.

8NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19860009522: Factorization And Reduction Methods For Optimal Control Of Distributed Parameter Systems
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
A Chandrasekhar-type factorization method is applied to the linear-quadratic optimal control problem for distributed parameter systems. An aeroelastic control problem is used as a model example to demonstrate that if computationally efficient algorithms, such as those of Chandrasekhar-type, are combined with the special structure often available to a particular problem, then an abstract approximation theory developed for distributed parameter control theory becomes a viable method of solution. A numerical scheme based on averaging approximations is applied to hereditary control problems. Numerical examples are given.

11NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19940031358: NASA Workshop On Distributed Parameter Modeling And Control Of Flexible Aerospace Systems
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Although significant advances have been made in modeling and controlling flexible systems, there remains a need for improvements in model accuracy and in control performance. The finite element models of flexible systems are unduly complex and are almost intractable to optimum parameter estimation for refinement using experimental data. Distributed parameter or continuum modeling offers some advantages and some challenges in both modeling and control. Continuum models often result in a significantly reduced number of model parameters, thereby enabling optimum parameter estimation. The dynamic equations of motion of continuum models provide the advantage of allowing the embedding of the control system dynamics, thus forming a complete set of system dynamics. There is also increased insight provided by the continuum model approach.

12Actuator Design For Parabolic Distributed Parameter Systems With The Moment Method
By Yannick Privat, Emmanuel Trélat and Enrique Zuazua
In this paper, we model and solve the problem of designing in an optimal way actuators for parabolic partial differential equations settled on a bounded open connected subset $\Omega$ of IR n. We optimize not only the location but also the shape of actuators, by finding what is the optimal distribution of actuators in $\Omega$, over all possible such distributions of a given measure. Using the moment method, we formulate a spectral optimal design problem, which consists of maximizing a criterion corresponding to an average over random initial data of the largest L 2-energy of controllers. Since we choose the moment method to control the PDE, our study mainly covers one-dimensional parabolic operators, but we also provide several examples in higher dimensions. We consider two types of controllers: either internal controls, modeled by characteristic functions, or lumped controls, that are tensorized functions in time and space. Under appropriate spectral assumptions, we prove existence and uniqueness of an optimal actuator distribution, and we provide a simple computation procedure. Numerical simulations illustrate our results.

14NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19890011265: Numerical Studies Of Identification In Nonlinear Distributed Parameter Systems
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
An abstract approximation framework and convergence theory for the identification of first and second order nonlinear distributed parameter systems developed previously by the authors and reported on in detail elsewhere are summarized and discussed. The theory is based upon results for systems whose dynamics can be described by monotone operators in Hilbert space and an abstract approximation theorem for the resulting nonlinear evolution system. The application of the theory together with numerical evidence demonstrating the feasibility of the general approach are discussed in the context of the identification of a first order quasi-linear parabolic model for one dimensional heat conduction/mass transport and the identification of a nonlinear dissipation mechanism (i.e., damping) in a second order one dimensional wave equation. Computational and implementational considerations, in particular, with regard to supercomputing, are addressed.

15DTIC ADA216468: Energy Decay And Boundary Control For Distributed Parameter Systems With Viscoelastic Damping
By Defense Technical Information Center
This report concerns several aspects of active and passive stabilization of materials and structures, together with related dynamic problems with potential applications to stabilization. Results are described for determination of the interacting effects of viscoelastic and feedback dissipation in the damping of oscillations in certain rods and beams. Loss of stability or of well-posedness due to feedback delays is described. Additional results concern analysis of energy decay in elastic beams and an investigation of the Signorini problem for motion of an elastic body that abuts a rigid obstacle. Numerical and analytic studies are described for Bingham fluids as well as for several problems involving two-fluid flows. Finally, work on control problems for the Navier-Stokes equations is summarized.

16DTIC ADA196306: An Approximation Theory For The Identification Of Nonlinear Distributed Parameter Systems
By Defense Technical Information Center
An abstract approximation framework for the identification of nonlinear distributed parameter systems is developed. Inverse problems for nonlinear systems governed by strongly maximal monotone operators(satisfying a mild continuous dependence condition with respect to the unknown parameters to be identified)are treated. Convergence of Galerkin approximations and the corresponding solutions of finite dimensional approximating identification problems to a solution of the original infinite dimensional identification problem is demonstrated using the theory of nonlinear evolution systems and a nonlinear analog of the Trotter-Kato approximation result for semigroups of bounded linear operators. The nonlinear theory developed here is shown to subsume an existing linear theory as a special case. It is also shown to be applicable to a broad class of nonlinear elliptic operators and the corresponding nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations to which they lead. An application of the theory to a quasilinear model for heat conduction or mass transfer is discussed. Keywords: Nonlinear distributed systems; Numerical analysis; Inverse problems; Approximation.

17Cyber-Physical Systems As General Distributed Parameter Systems: Three Types Of Fractional Order Models And Emerging Research Opportunities
By Fudong Ge, YangQuan Chen and Chunhai Kou
Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are man-made complex systems coupled with natural processes that, as a whole, should be described by distributed parameter systems (DPSs) in general forms. This paper presents three such general models for generalized DPSs that can be used to characterize complex CPSs. These three different types of fractional operators based DPS models are: fractional Laplacian operator, fractional power of operator or fractional derivative. This research investigation is motivated by many fractional order models describing natural, physical, and anomalous phenomena, such as sub-diffusion process or super-diffusion process. The relationships among these three different operators are explored and explained. Several potential future research opportunities are then articulated followed by some conclusions and remarks.

By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
A series of numerical examples is reported and several algorithms compared for estimation of coefficients in differential equation models. Unconstrained, constrained and Tikhonov regularization methods are tested for their behavior with regard to both convergence (of approximation methods for the states and parameters) and stability (continuity of the estimates with respect to perturbations in the data or observed states).

20Distributed Robust Control Of Linear Multi-Agent Systems With Parameter Uncertainties
By Zhongkui Li, Zhisheng Duan, Lihua Xie and Xiangdong Liu
This paper considers the distributed robust control problems of uncertain linear multi-agent systems with undirected communication topologies. It is assumed that the agents have identical nominal dynamics while subject to different norm-bounded parameter uncertainties, leading to weakly heterogeneous multi-agent systems. Distributed controllers are designed for both continuous- and discrete-time multi-agent systems, based on the relative states of neighboring agents and a subset of absolute states of the agents. It is shown for both the continuous- and discrete-time cases that the distributed robust control problems under such controllers in the sense of quadratic stability are equivalent to the $H_\infty$ control problems of a set of decoupled linear systems having the same dimensions as a single agent. A two-step algorithm is presented to construct the distributed controller for the continuous-time case, which does not involve any conservatism and meanwhile decouples the feedback gain design from the communication topology. Furthermore, a sufficient existence condition in terms of linear matrix inequalities is derived for the distributed discrete-time controller. Finally, the distributed robust $H_\infty$ control problems of uncertain linear multi-agent systems subject to external disturbances are discussed.

24Discrete Exterior Geometry Approach To Structure-Preserving Discretization Of Distributed-Parameter Port-Hamiltonian Systems
By Marko Seslija, Arjan van der Schaft and Jacquelien M. A. Scherpen
This paper addresses the issue of structure-preserving discretization of open distributed-parameter systems with Hamiltonian dynamics. Employing the formalism of discrete exterior calculus, we introduce a simplicial Dirac structure as a discrete analogue of the Stokes-Dirac structure and demonstrate that it provides a natural framework for deriving finite-dimensional port-Hamiltonian systems that emulate their infinite-dimensional counterparts. The spatial domain, in the continuous theory represented by a finite-dimensional smooth manifold with boundary, is replaced by a homological manifold-like simplicial complex and its augmented circumcentric dual. The smooth differential forms, in discrete setting, are mirrored by cochains on the primal and dual complexes, while the discrete exterior derivative is defined to be the coboundary operator. This approach of discrete differential geometry, rather than discretizing the partial differential equations, allows to first discretize the underlying Stokes-Dirac structure and then to impose the corresponding finite-dimensional port-Hamiltonian dynamics. In this manner, a number of important intrinsically topological and geometrical properties of the system are preserved.

25NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19870005429: Parameter Estimation Problems For Distributed Systems Using A Multigrid Method
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The problem of estimating spatially varying coefficients of partial differential equations is considered from observation of the solution and of the right hand side of the equation. It is assumed that the observations are distributed in the domain and that enough observations are given. A method of discretization and an efficient multigrid method for solving the resulting discrete systems are described. Numerical results are presented for estimation of coefficients in an elliptic and a parabolic partial differential equation.

26Greatly Enhancing The Modeling Accuracy For Distributed Parameter Systems By Nonlinear Time/space Separation
By Hai-Tao Zhang, Chen-Kun Qi, Tao Zhou and Han-Xiong Li
An effective modeling method for nonlinear distributed parameter systems (DPSs) is critical for both physical system analysis and industrial engineering. In this Rapid Communication, we propose a novel DPS modeling approach, in which a high-order nonlinear Volterra series is used to separate the time/space variables. With almost no additional computational complexity, the modeling accuracy is improved more than 20 times in average comparing with the traditional method.

29SBSI: An Extensible Distributed Software Infrastructure For Parameter Estimation In Systems Biology.
By Adams, Richard, Clark, Allan, Yamaguchi, Azusa, Hanlon, Neil, Tsorman, Nikos, Ali, Shakir, Lebedeva, Galina, Goltsov, Alexey, Sorokin, Anatoly, Akman, Ozgur E., Troein, Carl, Millar, Andrew J., Goryanin, Igor and Gilmore, Stephen
This article is from Bioinformatics , volume 29 . Abstract Summary: Complex computational experiments in Systems Biology, such as fitting model parameters to experimental data, can be challenging to perform. Not only do they frequently require a high level of computational power, but the software needed to run the experiment needs to be usable by scientists with varying levels of computational expertise, and modellers need to be able to obtain up-to-date experimental data resources easily. We have developed a software suite, the Systems Biology Software Infrastructure (SBSI), to facilitate the parameter-fitting process. SBSI is a modular software suite composed of three major components: SBSINumerics, a high-performance library containing parallelized algorithms for performing parameter fitting; SBSIDispatcher, a middleware application to track experiments and submit jobs to back-end servers; and SBSIVisual, an extensible client application used to configure optimization experiments and view results. Furthermore, we have created a plugin infrastructure to enable project-specific modules to be easily installed. Plugin developers can take advantage of the existing user-interface and application framework to customize SBSI for their own uses, facilitated by SBSI’s use of standard data formats.Availability and implementation: All SBSI binaries and source-code are freely available from http://sourceforge.net/projects/sbsi under an Apache 2 open-source license. The server-side SBSINumerics runs on any Unix-based operating system; both SBSIVisual and SBSIDispatcher are written in Java and are platform independent, allowing use on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. The SBSI project website at http://www.sbsi.ed.ac.uk provides documentation and tutorials.Contact: [email protected] information: Supplementary data are available at Bioinformatics online.

31NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19900002178: Estimation On Nonlinear Damping In Second Order Distributed Parameter Systems
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
An approximation and convergence theory for the identification of nonlinear damping in abstract wave equations is developed. It is assumed that the unknown dissipation mechanism to be identified can be described by a maximal monotone operator acting on the generalized velocity. The stiffness is assumed to be linear and symmetric. Functional analytic techniques are used to establish that solutions to a sequence of finite dimensional (Galerkin) approximating identification problems in some sense approximate a solution to the original infinite dimensional inverse problem.

32NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20060053356: Model Predictive Optimal Control Of A Time-Delay Distributed-Parameter Systems
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
This paper presents an optimal control method for a class of distributed-parameter systems governed by first order, quasilinear hyperbolic partial differential equations that arise in many physical systems. Such systems are characterized by time delays since information is transported from one state to another by wave propagation. A general closed-loop hyperbolic transport model is controlled by a boundary control embedded in a periodic boundary condition. The boundary control is subject to a nonlinear differential equation constraint that models actuator dynamics of the system. The hyperbolic equation is thus coupled with the ordinary differential equation via the boundary condition. Optimality of this coupled system is investigated using variational principles to seek an adjoint formulation of the optimal control problem. The results are then applied to implement a model predictive control design for a wind tunnel to eliminate a transport delay effect that causes a poor Mach number regulation.

37Semi-definite Programming And Functional Inequalities For Distributed Parameter Systems
By G. Valmorbida, M. Ahmadi and A. Papachristodoulou
We study one-dimensional integral inequalities, with quadratic integrands, on bounded domains. Conditions for these inequalities to hold are formulated in terms of function matrix inequalities which must hold in the domain of integration. For the case of polynomial function matrices, sufficient conditions for positivity of the matrix inequality and, therefore, for the integral inequalities are cast as semi-definite programs. The inequalities are used to study stability of linear partial differential equations.

39A Gradient-based Kernel Optimization Approach For Parabolic Distributed Parameter Control Systems
By Zhigang Ren, Chao Xu, Qun Lin and Ryan Loxton
This paper proposes a new gradient-based optimization approach for designing optimal feedback kernels for parabolic distributed parameter systems with boundary control. Unlike traditional kernel optimization methods for parabolic systems, our new method does not require solving non-standard Riccati-type or Klein-Gorden-type partial differential equations (PDEs). Instead, the feedback kernel is parameterized as a second-order polynomial whose coefficients are decision variables to be tuned via gradient-based dynamic optimization, where the gradient of the system cost functional (which penalizes both kernel and output magnitude) is computed by solving a so-called costate PDE instandard form. Special constraints are imposed on the kernel coefficients to ensure that, under mild conditions, the optimized kernel yields closed-loop stability. Numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

40One Shot Methods For Optimal Control Of Distributed Parameter Systems 1: Finite Dimensional Control
By Taasan, Shlom

42NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19880017489: Finite-dimensional Approximation For Optimal Fixed-order Compensation Of Distributed Parameter Systems
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
In controlling distributed parameter systems it is often desirable to obtain low-order, finite-dimensional controllers in order to minimize real-time computational requirements. Standard approaches to this problem employ model/controller reduction techniques in conjunction with LQG theory. In this paper we consider the finite-dimensional approximation of the infinite-dimensional Bernstein/Hyland optimal projection theory. This approach yields fixed-finite-order controllers which are optimal with respect to high-order, approximating, finite-dimensional plant models. The technique is illustrated by computing a sequence of first-order controllers for one-dimensional, single-input/single-output, parabolic (heat/diffusion) and hereditary systems using spline-based, Ritz-Galerkin, finite element approximation. Numerical studies indicate convergence of the feedback gains with less than 2 percent performance degradation over full-order LQG controllers for the parabolic system and 10 percent degradation for the hereditary system.

By Defense Technical Information Center
This research seeks to unify certain problems of distributed parameter control: model reduction, control, sensor/actuator selections/failure, and decentralized control. These topics are all related and are to be unified through the quadric performance metric with use of cost decomposition methods. The final research topic on model error estimation is required to male vernier adjustments after best models and controllers are developed, to absorb remaining modeling errors. During the period covered by the grant, 16 conference and journal research papers were written. Titles include: Computer Aided Design of Suboptimal LQG Controller, Cost Equivalent Realizations of Stochastic Processes, Component Cost Analysis of Large Scale Systems, Comments on Realizations and Reduction of Markovian Models for Nonstationary Data, and On the Selection of Controller Order for the Control of Linear Dynamic Systems.

48NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19810020922: The Reduced Order Model Problem In Distributed Parameter Systems Adaptive Identification And Control. [large Space Structures
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The basic assumption that a large space structure can be decoupled preceding the application of reduced order active control was considered and alternative solutions to the control of such structures (in contrast to the strict modal control) were investigated. The transfer function matrix from the actuators to the sensors was deemed to be a reasonable candidate. More refined models from multivariable systems theory were studied and recent results in the multivariable control field were compared with respect to theoretical deficiencies and likely problems in application to large space structures.

49NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19900012250: On The Continuous Dependence With Respect To Sampling Of The Linear Quadratic Regulator Problem For Distributed Parameter Systems
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The convergence of solutions to the discrete or sampled time linear quadratic regulator problem and associated Riccati equation for infinite dimensional systems to the solutions to the corresponding continuous time problem and equation, as the length of the sampling interval (the sampling rate) tends toward zero (infinity) is established. Both the finite and infinite time horizon problems are studied. In the finite time horizon case, strong continuity of the operators which define the control system and performance index together with a stability and consistency condition on the sampling scheme are required. For the infinite time horizon problem, in addition, the sampled systems must be stabilizable and detectable, uniformly with respect to the sampling rate. Classes of systems for which this condition can be verified are discussed. Results of numerical studies involving the control of a heat/diffusion equation, a hereditary of delay system, and a flexible beam are presented and discussed.
