A review is presented of the literature concerning control and display technology that is applicable to the Orbital Maneuvering Vehicle (OMV), a system being developed by NASA that will enable the user to remotely pilot it during a mission in space. In addition to the general review, special consideration is given to virtual image displays and their potential for use in the system, and a preliminary partial task analysis of the user's functions is also presented.

This flexible display and integrated communication device (FDICD) technology program sought to create a family of powerful visualization technologies that would reduce the weight, volume, and power while increasing usability by integrating many of the functions of present mission equipment into a small form factor. The goals included a network comprised of a worn main computer, a hand-held or knee-worn large display system and a wrist-worn small display. The large display was to be eventually rollable to provide soldiers with a large image of at least super video graphics adapter (SVGA) color resolution when needed, but small form factor when stowed, for viewing of and team collaboration with tactical information such as battlefield maps, GIS imaging data, command/control plots, and global positioning system (GPS)-assisted navigational maps. The wrist system was to provide a readily viewable unit in situations where the larger unit cannot be deployed and without resorting to headgear, which blocks battlespace view-ability. This final phase of the program resulted in two separate wrist demonstration devices. The first device built upon the results of the first phase of the project to raise the technology readiness level (TRL) of the commercial personal digital assistant (PDA)-based unit to a level suitable for the intended military environment, including full water-immersion capability. The second device was a custom designed wrist display intended to demonstrate additional capability on the wrist, including GPS maps.

During the course of this program, several breakthroughs in the development of full color flat panel displays based on organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) were made. In particular, we demonstrated the first transparent OLED, flexible OLED based on molecular organic materials, and full color stacked OLED. These three devices, along with several other similar structures, including high efficiency devices employing shaped substrates and inverted, integratable OLEDs, provide a range of tools which change the possibilities for realizing very high resolution, high efficiency, and light weight OLED based displays for a wide range of DOD and commercial applications. In other advances, we developed a model linking current transport and eletroluminescence in molecular OLEDs, and have worked closely with several industrial partners to rapidly transfer technology from the conceptual, laboratory phase into commercial applications.

In future battlespace scenarios huge amounts of highly dynamic information will be available due to the technical development of sensor. communication and information systems. This flood of available information may lead to mental overload of the military commander and cause a wrong mental model of the battlespace situation. Therefore advanced techniques for supporting the military commander and displaying complex tactical situation data in a clearly understandable way have to be developed and evaluated. At the Research Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics (FKIE) of FGAN a concept for preprocessing and visualizing incoming tactical data and three-dimensional geographical data has been developed. The concept includes the use of Virtual Environment-technology as a display system. This 'Electronic Sandtable (ELSA)" testbed, as described in this paper, is based on a semi-immersive display technology. It facilitates a plastic stereoscopic visualization of three-dimensional data. It has been developed to be used to simulate a sandtable as commonly used by the Armed Forces for tactical education and training. This paper presents the baseline concept of using VE- technology as an advanced tactical situation display. It is pointed out that, although the technology is commercially available, research in the area of ergonomics and human factors is essential for the advantageous use of such a system. The main ergonomic topics described in this paper include the stereoscopic visualization of the geographic and tactical data, the degree of abstraction and human operator interaction with the virtual scene on the Electronic Sandtable".

Basic investigations were conducted into the fabrication and assembly of modular 1 in. X 1 in. LED arrays of resolution 128 lines-per-inch. The LED material used was green-emitting gallium phosphide, Various LED configurations were investigated including stitch-bonded and flip-chip, bumped contact structures. A demonstration system was built and delivered to the USAF/FDL; this consisted of a 1 in. x 1 in. array plus associated decode/drive electronics interfaced to a 128 X 128 matrix solid-state TV camera. The electronics provided for the generation of video imagery on an eight level grey scale ratio of 2. In addition, array sections were fabricated confirming the achievement of sunlight visible performance for 128 line-per-inch LED arrays. This is the Third Quarterly Report on manufacturing methods and technology evaluation for the fabrication of thin film transistor based solid state displays. The automatic pilot manufacturing unit is operating at overall satisfactory levels and producing displays to the required formats etc. The quality level of these displays is as yet not sufficient to pass the required legibility specifications but good progress has been made at identifying the key problem areas. The fabrication equivalent displays at good quality levels on laboratory equipment has continued and confirmation of the major performance attributes was achieved.

Large-screen display technology is undergoing significant changes because of huge investments being expended to meet the potential high-definition television (HDTV) market. The expected result of this investment is display devices having improved quality and larger areas, which can be immediately used in military command and control operations. This report tracks recent display developments and their potential capabilities for command and control applications.

The purpose of this workshop was 'to define the doctrinal and system requirements driving advanced display technology for next generation FLIR applications.' To achieve this purpose, seven sessions were conducted. Four were tutorial in nature and three were discussion forums. The tutorial sessions (Sessions I, II, III, and VI) covered the topics of mission/doctrine requirements, system requirements, human factors and sensor/display state-of-the-art. The discussion sessions (Sessions IV, V, and VII) provided the attendees with the opportunity to interact with one another as well as to enter into informative and effective dialogue. Session IV served as a 'question and answer' period for topics covered in the first three sessions; Session V covered the topic of defining common terms used within the sensor/display community and developing standardized image measurement techniques; while Session VII served as a summary session whereby attendees attempted to summarize what had transpired at the Workshop. This report documents, in a concise and coherent manner, the proceedings that occurred during the conduct of this Workshop. A summary of each session is provided along with summary papers and associated presentation materials submitted by participants.

For several years, the Naval Ocean Systems Center (NOSC) has been working on the development of laser-based display systems with the goal of upgrading the image quality and ruggedness of shipboard displays. In this paper we report work on our major task of developing a full-color laser-addressed liquid crystal light value (LCLV) projection system.

Advances in computing has come from improvements in integrated circuits and improvements in our ability to produce complex software systems. Display technology has reached the point where it is possible to display almost anything the human mind can conceive. Installation of complex computing machines changes the nature of the organization it serves, thus it is difficult to establish in advance clear specifications. The increasing complexity of computing equipment will ultimately force a change in Navy procurement procedures. Operating units of the Fleet will have to be given greater control over the specification and modification of the equipment they operate. Careful consideration needs to be given to how the specifications for complex computing devices are written, and those who use the devices need to have a say in the process.
