1NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19990008585: Synchronous Parallel Emulation And Discrete Event Simulation System With Self-Contained Simulation Objects And Active Event Objects
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The present invention is embodied in a method of performing object-oriented simulation and a system having inter-connected processor nodes operating in parallel to simulate mutual interactions of a set of discrete simulation objects distributed among the nodes as a sequence of discrete events changing state variables of respective simulation objects so as to generate new event-defining messages addressed to respective ones of the nodes. The object-oriented simulation is performed at each one of the nodes by assigning passive self-contained simulation objects to each one of the nodes, responding to messages received at one node by generating corresponding active event objects having user-defined inherent capabilities and individual time stamps and corresponding to respective events affecting one of the passive self-contained simulation objects of the one node, restricting the respective passive self-contained simulation objects to only providing and receiving information from die respective active event objects, requesting information and changing variables within a passive self-contained simulation object by the active event object, and producing corresponding messages specifying events resulting therefrom by the active event objects.

2NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20140017856: Using Discrete Event Simulation To Model Integrated Commodities Consumption For A Launch Campaign Of The Space Launch System
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
In May 2013, NASA's GSDO Program requested a study to develop a discrete event simulation (DES) model that analyzes the launch campaign process of the Space Launch System (SLS) from an integrated commodities perspective. The scope of the study includes launch countdown and scrub turnaround and focuses on four core launch commodities: hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and helium. Previously, the commodities were only analyzed individually and deterministically for their launch support capability, but this study was the first to integrate them to examine the impact of their interactions on a launch campaign as well as the effects of process variability on commodity availability. The study produced a validated DES model with Rockwell Arena that showed that Kennedy Space Center's ground systems were capable of supporting a 48-hour scrub turnaround for the SLS. The model will be maintained and updated to provide commodity consumption analysis of future ground system and SLS configurations.

3Warship Combat System Selection Methodology Based On Discrete Event Simulation
By Gomez Torres, Jose M.
This thesis presents the development of a methodology for the conceptual design of a medium tonnage warship?s combat system for the Colombian Navy. The methodology is oriented toward the optimization of the operational effectiveness within the naval ship design constraints of weight, electrical power, volume, cost, and risk. The methodology is based on a Design Reference Mission (DRM), which is composed of four Operational Situations (OPSITs) covering antisubmarine warfare, anti-air warfare, mine warfare, and surface warfare. The OPSITs are represented by coupled physics-based models and probabilistic models. A discrete event simulation tool, ExtendSim®, is used to implement these models, yielding quantitative results for mission success. Design of Experiments (DOE) is used to explore the design space, allowing identification of the main effects in each OPSIT model and the impact of each variable in the respective Measure of Effectiveness (MOE). The four OPSIT MOEs are integrated in a single Overall Measure of Effectiveness (OMOE) allowing the comparison among different configurations of combat systems, which is used to determine the best overall ship design to meet operational requirements.

4Analysis Of Employment Of A Disaster Relief Damage Assessment System Using Discrete Event Simulation
By Bridgett, Richard J.
This project uses discrete event simulation to model and analyze the process of setting up and employing a damage assessment system for information-gathering after a disaster. The process that is modeled was originally performed as a live simulation in May of 2008. The live simulation experiment was conducted by a research team affiliated with the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), including the author, and was based on a post-tsunami scenario that combined numerous surveillance and communications technologies. With information obtained from this experiment, a discrete event simulation model was created to accurately represent the live simulation. The model was then enhanced to include realistic variability for all processes. In addition, further enhanced models were created to simulate likely equipment failures and weather delays in order to estimate how long the process would take given these various conditions. The addition of delays to the model resulted in more realistic cycle times giving the project increased validity. The project provides the Disaster Relief/Humanitarian (DR/HA) research community a realistic analysis tool for assessing the process of setting up and employing a damage assessment system following a disaster and the results give an expected completion time and range under the conditions modeled.

6DTIC ADA615410: A Process Improvement Study On A Military System Of Clinics To Manage Patient Demand And Resource Utilization Using Discrete-Event Simulation, Sensitivity Analysis, And Cost-Benefit Analysis
By Defense Technical Information Center
Inefficiencies in the healthcare system are a growing concern. Long wait-times are a concern at military clinics because it takes servicemembers away from performing their duties. Managing wait-times are particularly challenging due to frequent relocations of servicemembers and variable patient demands that are less likely to be experienced by civilian clinics. Military clinics must be capable to meet increasing demand when servicemembers require a Deployment Health Assessment; it also needs to be capable of handling an instantaneous surge of walk-ins when a medical incident occurs in the local area. It must be able to meet these demands in a fiscally austere environment. Existing research primarily focuses on stand-alone clinics, whereas this research takes a novel approach of examining a system of clinics, in which some resources are shared. This research evaluates the impacts of variable staffing levels on total wait-time for the system of clinics at baseline demand and when demand increases, using discrete-event simulation, sensitivity analysis, and cost-benefit analysis. This research finds misallocated resources; the wait-time of alternative systems are sensitive to deployment and medical incident demands; and hiring an optometrist while removing an occupational medicine doctor provides the highest savings in baseline, deployment, and medical incident demand environments.

7NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19920014802: Synchronous Parallel System For Emulation And Discrete Event Simulation
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
A synchronous parallel system for emulation and discrete event simulation having parallel nodes responds to received messages at each node by generating event objects having individual time stamps, stores only the changes to state variables of the simulation object attributable to the event object, and produces corresponding messages. The system refrains from transmitting the messages and changing the state variables while it determines whether the changes are superseded, and then stores the unchanged state variables in the event object for later restoral to the simulation object if called for. This determination preferably includes sensing the time stamp of each new event object and determining which new event object has the earliest time stamp as the local event horizon, determining the earliest local event horizon of the nodes as the global event horizon, and ignoring the events whose time stamps are less than the global event horizon. Host processing between the system and external terminals enables such a terminal to query, monitor, command or participate with a simulation object during the simulation process.

11DTIC ADA324210: An Object-Oriented Discrete-Event Simulation System For Hierarchical Parallel Simulations.
By Defense Technical Information Center
The purpose of this research is to design and implement an object-oriented discrete-event simulation system which supports hierarchically constructed players in a parallel or distributed environment. This system design considers modularity and portability so additional modules may be implemented to experiment with new algorithms for both partitioning and synchronization. A simulation system which meets these requirements was partially implemented on an eight-node Intel Hypercube in C. A desired goal was to maintain the functionality of the existing BattleSim application. Test cases used measure the performance and correct operation of the new simulation architecture using a BattleSim subclass. Test results prove correct operation of the new architecture, but show a significant slow down in the parallel operation of this system.

12DTIC ADA609513: Conceptual Modeling Of A Quantum Key Distribution Simulation Framework Using The Discrete Event System Specification
By Defense Technical Information Center
Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is a revolutionary security technology that exploits the laws of quantum mechanics to achieve information-theoretical secure key exchange. QKD is suitable for use in applications that require high security such as those found in certain commercial, governmental, and military domains. As QKD is a new technology, there is a need to develop a robust quantum communication modeling and simulation framework to support the analysis of QKD systems. This dissertation presents conceptual modeling QKD system components using the Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) formalism to assure the component models are provably composable and exhibit temporal behavior independent of the simulation environment. These attributes enable users to assemble and simulate any collection of compatible components to represent QKD system architectures. The developed models demonstrate closure under coupling and exhibit behavior suitable for the intended analytic purpose, thus improving the validity of the simulation. This research contributes to the validity of the QKD simulation, increasing developer and user confidence in the correctness of the models and providing a composable, canonical basis for performance analysis efforts. 13Discrete-event System Simulation
The research supports the efficient modeling, simulation, and analysis of QKD systems when evaluating existing systems or developing next generation QKD cryptographic systems.

1Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
By Edgar James Banks
<em>The 7 Wonders of the Ancient World</em> is a list of masterpieces of architecture and art of classical antiquity. First compiled in the second century BC, it served as a guidebook for the interested Hellenic traveller. This small book gives an introduction to all the entries on the list: The Pyramid of Khufu, the Walls of Babylon, the Satue of the Olympian Zeus, the Temple of Diana (or Artemis), the Tomb of King Mausolus, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Pharos of Alexandria. Sadly for the modern tourist, all but the Pyramid of Giza have been destroyed centuries ago. (Summary by Availle.)

2Manchester Man
By Isabella Varley Banks
Jabez Clegg, the Manchester man, floats into this historical novel in 1799, carried downstream by the River Irk in flood. Jabez's rise to commercial success mirrors the rise of the city at the heart of the industrial revolution. Mrs George Linnaeus Banks (nee Isabella Varley) weaves a web of historical fact and fiction in a fast-paced story built around the rivalry between the Jabez and his nemesis Laurence Aspinall, and the fate of Augusta Ashton, who is loved by both but loves only one. An entertaining fictional journey through the early 19th century history of the city of Manchester, the book also has serious points to make about women's choices and domestic violence. 5Endeavour Journal of Sir Joseph Banks from 25 August 1768-12 July 1771
By Joseph Banks

In this Journal, Joseph Banks records almost daily observations of the journey of the ship the Endeavour on the first of James Cook’s voyages to the Pacific during the years 1768-1771. There are also more detailed accounts of the events, people, flora, fauna and geology of the places (except Brazil) where they landed. They landed at Brazil, Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia, Batavia, Cape Town and St. Helena. Joseph Banks was one of the naturalists on the Endeavour, appointed by the Royal Society. The joint Royal Society, Royal Navy journey of the Endeavour was overtly a scientific expedition with the stated purpose of observing the transit of Venus from Tahiti. The other purpose of the journey was to attempt the discovery of the postulated Southern Continent (Terra Australis). In addition to himself, Banks funded the inclusion on the voyage of two other naturalists (Solander and Spöring) and two artists (Parkinson and Buchan). Joseph Banks became famous upon the return to Britain of the Endeavour and went on to be a highly influential person in Britain. Banks was President of the British Royal Society for more than 40 years; and was a strong advocate for the settlement of New South Wales as a convict settlement. Along with James Cook, he was responsible for representing the Australian continent as terra nullius (“nobody’s land”) even though he observed the occupation of the land by the indigenous Australians, which misrepresentation contributed to the colonization of Australia by the British. Now, 250 years after the Endeavour's voyage, controversy and the voices of indigenous people are leading to a reassessment of the effects of James Cook’s voyages and the colonial legacy of Australia and New Zealand. (Gail Timmerman-Vaughan)

11Autobiography of a "Newspaper Girl"
By Elizabeth L. Banks
Elizabeth Banks was an American journalist and author. She grew up in Wisconsin, then lived in England the last forty years of her life. She became a regular contributor to English publications such as <i>The Daily News</i>, <i>Punch</i>, <i>St James' Gazette</i>, and <i>London Illustrated</i>. She created a sensation by recording her observations on the plight of the lower classes, which she researched posing as a housemaid, street sweeper, and Covent Garden flower girl. Her later journalistic writings promoted women's right to vote and denounced prison conditions for jailed suffragettes. This memoir was written about 10 years into her career, when she was better known but was not financially secure.<br> Her public-facing accounts of her "undercover" work are related in <a href="https://librivox.org/campaigns-of-curiosity-journalistic-adventures-of-an-american-girl-in-london-by-elizabeth-l-banks/">Campaigns of Curiosity</a> - Summary by TriciaG and Wikipedia

12Campaigns of Curiosity: Journalistic Adventures of an American Girl in London
By Elizabeth L. Banks
Elizabeth Banks was an American journalist who, at about age 23, moved to London. While trying to break into English journalism and to keep the wolf from the door, she struck upon the idea of hiring out as a housemaid in some London household and writing about her experiences. Subsequently, she became a street sweeper, flower-seller, and a laundress. On the flip side, she advertised as an heiress and demonstrated how easy it was for a wealthy American to "buy a pedigree" and entry into the higher social circles. This book is her relation of these experiences.<br> These were her public-facing accounts. She gives a more personal, behind-the-scenes version in <a href="https://librivox.org/the-autobiography-of-a-newspaper-girl-by-elizabeth-l-banks/">The Autobiography of a Newspaper Girl</a>. - Summary by TriciaG
