Understanding how we make intuitive decisions and how we can develop this quality in junior leaders is important for an Army confronted with unfamiliar environments, rapidly changing circumstances, and surrounded by a seemingly ubiquitous media able to draw attention on the outcomes of heretofore innocuous junior leader s decisions. This challenge is particularly salient as we consider operational unit junior company grade officer leader development. Unit level commanders retain the critical responsibility to hone the leader development edge acquired in institutional training into a war fighting capability needed to execute rapid, effective in extremis decision making. This paper examines the cognition and development of intuition in Army junior officers from a strategic perspective. It poses several questions: first, to what extent does the US Army s training and leader development process focus on developing junior officer s intuition as a viable problem solving method or does it primarily focus on improving these leader s rational, analytical abilities? Second, how can US Army commander s better train and develop junior officers to confidently rely on intuition to make decisions in a VUCA environment? The paper concludes with potential leader development processes that can assist unit commanders in developing intuition in junior officers.

The program of the Japan-American Institute of Management Sciences (JAIMS) in Hawaii, a nonprofit graduate-level institution intended to support training for cross-cultural business leadership, is described and discussed. Two curricula, the Japan-focused Master of Business Administration program and the Japan-focused Management Program are offered cooperatively with the University of Hawaii. The JAIMS program goal is both to teach and expand linguistic skills and to train students to behave appropriately in a Japanese social context. A distinction is made between the underlying cultural rules of the society and the rules of etiquette, protocol, and ritual that are their surface manifestation. It is noted that realization of the importance of developing Japanese social intuition emerged from cross-cultural student-teacher conflicts in classes. As a result, specific attention is given in class to these intrinsic Japanese expectations and values: humility; indirectness; in-group/out-group consciousness; vertical relationships; distance/reservation; reciprocity/indebtedness; orderliness/neatness; and consideration/initiative. Examples are given of classroom techniques that highlight these values. It is concluded that instilling social intuition in Japan-bound students is crucial to their success. (MSE)

Futures research involves speculation about alternative developments based upon existing data and potential choices. Effective futures research requires creativity in scientific practice rather than an overemphasis on reason. In discussing the important role of intuition in futures research, characteristics of creative scientists are reviewed and two models for creative processes are presented (Mansfield and Busse, 1981, and Wallas, 1926). The stages in Wallas' model are discussed in terms of critical cognitive processes and relationships between creativity and hemispheric dominance in information processing. A generic framework for problem-solving is also detailed (D'Zurilla and Goldfried, 1971). Integrating contributions from these approaches, techniques for developing intuition, and enhancing creativity are presented for each stage of the futures research process: (1) general orientation; (2) problem selection; (3) problem definition and formulation; (4) preparation and effort; (5) incubation and generation of hypotheses; (6) illumination; (7) decision-making; and (8) verification. Both active problem-exploration and passive self-exploration approaches to overcoming habitual reasoning methods are presented. Journal writing, attaining personal/professional synergy, applying general systems theory, relaxing or mediating, using art, analogizing, self-centering, and brainstorming, are some of the many techniques discussed to develop intuition and enhance creativity. In the final analysis the rational, systematic procedures of conventional science and the intuitive, "discontinuous," contributions of highly creative researchers complement each other. (BS)
