7DTIC ADA473283: Some Human Factors Considerations For Designing Mixed Reality Interfaces

By

Mixed Reality (MR) refers to the general case of combining images along a continuum which ranges from purely real (unmodelled) data, such as raw video images, to completely virtual images, based on modelled environments. Depending on where a particular display mode lies on the reality-virtuality continuum, MR encompasses the case of Augmented Reality (AR), as well as the case of Augmented Virtuality (AV). In designing human-machine interfaces for mixed reality applications, a number of considerations are discussed which may potentially impact the effectiveness of the design. In addition to the real-virtual image content (which is closely related to how much knowledge is available about the images being displayed), these include the (visual) perceptual impact of the display technologies used for combining real and virtual images, which manifest themselves in particular when virtual objects must be aligned with real ones, for applications such as AR mediated teleoperation. Other considerations include where the user's particular viewpoint lies along a continuum ranging from ego- to exo-centricity, as well as control-display congruence issues constrained by the other MR factors.

9Issues And Challenges In Designing User Interfaces For Healthcare Applications

By

The absence of effective user interfaces has constituted a significant impediment to the adoption of healthcare professional workstations. The interface is subjected to rigorous demands by healthcare providers and their practice environment. The design of user interfaces necessitates a heightened level of attention to the needs, cognitive aptitudes, and constraints of the ultimate user. The task of enhancing the adoption and attaining extensive utilization of clinical information systems will be intensified with the amplification of diversity and intricacy of multimedia delivery. A more comprehensive understanding of the cognitive processes implicated in human-computer interactions is necessary to devise interfaces that are more intuitive and more readily embraced by healthcare professionals.

11Designing Web Interfaces Screencast (OReilly)

By

This is an update to the previous Designing Web Interfaces talk that I gave on Feb. 3, 2009 over a live webcast via an O'Reilly Author Webcast special. This presentation goes hand in hand with our book (Bill Scott & Theresa Neil) called Designing Web Interfaces: Principles and Patterns for Rich Interaction. This presentation is much better suited for Slideshare than previous presentations as I took a lot of time to turn the movie screencasts into individual keyframes. All interactions now show in this presentation (that is why there are 300+ slides; in reality the presentation was more like 50 slides.) http://designingwebinterfaces.com http://looksgoodworkswell.com http://designgenie.org

13NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20110000771: System And Method Of Designing A Load Bearing Layer That Interfaces To A Structural Pass-through Of An Inflatable Vessel

By

A method for determining a design of an inflatable module including a rigid member disposed in a restraint layer, wherein the restraint layer includes orthogonal straps, includes modeling a strap adjacent to the rigid member and a strap connected to the rigid member. The adjacent strap and the member strap extend in a first direction. The method further includes selecting a first length of the member strap such that the adjacent strap carries load before the member strap during pressurization of the inflatable module, modeling tensions in the member strap with the first length and the adjacent strap during pressurization of the inflatable model, and outputting the modeled tensions in the member strap with the first length and the adjacent strap. An inflatable module includes a member strap having a length such that an adjacent strap carries load before the member strap during pressurization of the inflatable module.

17DTIC ADA412330: Designing Human-Machine Interfaces Using Principles Of Stochastic Resonance

By

An experimental study is described which involves two types of haptic sensory information and its impact on the ability of the human operator to perform a target tracking task. A principal termed, stochastic resonance was applied to design the haptic interface to enhance the operator's sense of presence. In essence, the way that stochastic resonance works, is to provide a sufficiently small amount of noise into a nonlinear system in such a way that the overall system is stimulated, but not degraded in performance. Too little noise or too much noise input is not beneficial to the operator. A small amount of noise, however, presented in judicious manner can be shown to stimulate the process but not to degrade its efficacy. In this study, haptic (force reflecting joystick) inputs were provided to the operator through his hand as well as haptic (motion chair) inputs as derived by a motion chair in the Human Sensory Feedback Laboratory. The results (across seven subjects) clearly demonstrated that an optimum amount of noise from the haptic joystick and motion chair combination could improve the ability of the operator to track signals and provide higher signal to noise ratios in his response.

26DTIC ADA498162: Extreme Scalability: Designing Interfaces And Algorithms For Soldier-Robotic Swarm Interaction

By

In theory, autonomous robotic swarms can be used for critical Army tasks (i.e., accompanying convoys); however, the Soldier controlling the swarm must be able to monitor swarm status and correct actions, especially in disrupted or degraded conditions. For this two-year Director's Research Initiative (DRI), we designed metacognition algorithms and Soldier-swarm display concepts to allow Soldiers to efficiently interact with a robotic swarm participating in a representative convoy mission. We used a potential field approach for swarm control because it scales easily to large heterogeneous swarms and allows users to dynamically alter swarm behavior by adjusting field parameters. The Soldier-swarm interface displayed swarm and convoy geospatial position; swarm health and communication; and convoy status information, using visual, auditory, and tactile combinations. We measured swarm metacognition by determining the proportion of time the simulated swarm could maintain a specific orbital ring around the convoy over six terrains in 13-min scenarios. We tested interface effectiveness in a laboratory study using 16 male Marines (volunteers) with a mean age of 19 years. The metacognition results showed that the swarm could maintain the pre-defined dispersion more than 85% of the time in each terrain. Using multimodal displays, Soldier workload decreased and performance increased (i.e., response time reduced).

As we move towards human deep space missions, astronauts will no longer be able to say, “Houston, we have a problem.” The restricted contact with mission control because of the incredible distance from Earth will require astronauts to make autonomous decisions. How will astronauts take on the roles of mission control? This is an area of active research that has far reaching implications for the future of distant spaceflight. Hear Steve Hillenius of NASA share their use of design and user research to come up with innovative solutions for astronauts to effectively explore the Moon, Mars, and beyond. 30DTIC ADA231558: A Toolkit For Designing User Interfaces

By

Current methods of developing user interfaces for IRIS workstation application programs are inefficient. In order to help speed the development of complex graphics programs, IRIS workstation users need a toolkit that will assist in the design and implementation of user interfaces for graphics programs. This project presents the preliminary work on an interface generator for the Silicon Graphics, Inc. IRIS workstation. The NPS Interface Builder (NPS IB) is designed to speed the creation of application programs by allowing a user to define an interface graphically rather than by writing C code. The program provides on-screen editing, facilitated by a number of program features. NPS IB can be used to develop the basic framework of a graphics program, or can be user to enhance the capabilities of an already existing graphics application.

Design is hard. Implementing a design can be even harder. But fear not! With a good handle on how to use Photoshop and a solid understanding of CSS, the limits on what can be accomplished can be lifted. In this session I'll cover best practices for designing in Photoshop and implementing those designs with pixel-perfect, yet flexible CSS and HTML. Iâll walk through Aten Design Group's process for designing and ways to implement a design in a flexible, responsive way.

By

In theory, autonomous robotic swarm can be used for critical Army tasks (i.e., accompanying convoys); however, the Soldier controlling the swarm must be able to monitor swarm status and correct actions, especially in disrupted or degraded conditions. For the concluding year of this two-tear Director's Research Initiative (DRI), we designed multimodal (speech and touch) Soldier-swarm control concepts to allow Soldiers to efficiently control a robotic swarm participating in a representative convoy mission. We used a potential field approach for swarm control because it scales easily to large heterogeneous swarms and allows users to dynamically alter swarm behavior by adjusting field parameters. We tested the effectiveness of the swarm controls in a laboratory study using 12 male Marines (volunteers) with a mean age of 19 years. The metacognition results showed that the swarm (which consisted of members fulfilling sentry and explorer functions) could maintain adequate coverage most of the time. Interface results showed that most participants, 58%, used speech commands first almost exclusively, while the remaining used touch commands first. Results can be applied to future swarm and command and control systems.

39Modelling Internet Based Applications For Designing Multi-device Adaptive Interfaces

By

The wide spread of mobile devices in the consumer market has posed a number of new issues in the design of internet applications and their user interfaces. In particular, applications need to adapt their interaction modalities to different portable devices. In this paper we address the problem of defining models and techniques for designing internet based applications that automatically adapt to different mobile devices. First, we define a formal model that allows for specifying the interaction in a way that is abstract enough to be decoupled from the presentation layer, which is to be adapted to different contexts. The model is mainly based on the idea of describing the user interaction in terms of elementary actions. Then, we provide a formal device characterization showing how to effectively implements the AIUs in a multidevice context.

The model is mainly based on the idea of describing the user interaction in terms of elementary actions. Then, we provide a formal device characterization showing how to effectively implements the AIUs in a multidevice context.
