Building on the inequalities for homogeneous tetrahedral polynomials in independent Gaussian variables due to R. Lata{\l}a we provide a concentration inequality for non-necessarily Lipschitz functions $f\colon \R^n \to \R$ with bounded derivatives of higher orders, which hold when the underlying measure satisfies a family of Sobolev type inequalities $\|g- \E g\|_p \le C(p)\|\nabla g\|_p.$ Such Sobolev type inequalities hold, e.g., if the underlying measure satisfies the log-Sobolev inequality (in which case $C(p) \le C\sqrt{p}$) or the Poincar\'e inequality (then $C(p) \le Cp$). Our concentration estimates are expressed in terms of tensor-product norms of the derivatives of $f$. When the underlying measure is Gaussian and $f$ is a polynomial (non-necessarily tetrahedral or homogeneous), our estimates can be reversed (up to a constant depending only on the degree of the polynomial). We also show that for polynomial functions, analogous estimates hold for arbitrary random vectors with independent sub-Gaussian coordinates. We apply our inequalities to general additive functionals of random vectors (in particular linear eigenvalue statistics of random matrices) and the problem of counting cycles of fixed length in Erd\H{o}s-R{\'e}nyi random graphs, obtaining new estimates, optimal in a certain range of parameters.

Abstract Experiments were conducted to study the bioefficacies of different plant/weed derivatives that affect the development of the pulse beetle, Callosobruchus maculates F. (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) fed on black gram, Vigna mungo, seeds. Plant extracts, powder, ash and oil from nishinda (Vitex negundo L.), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globules Labill.), bankalmi (Ipomoea sepiaria K.), neem (Azadirachta indica L.), safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.), sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) and bablah (Acacia arabica L.) were evaluated for their oviposition inhibition, surface protectant, residual toxicity and direct toxicity effects on C. maculates. The results showed that plant oils were effective in checking insect infestation. The least number of F1 adults emerged from black gram seeds treated with neem oil. The nishinda oil extract was the most toxic of three extracts tested (nishinda, eucalyptus and bankalmi). Bablah ash was the most effective compared to the powdered leaves of nishinda, eucalyptus and bankalmi. The powdered leaves and extracts of nishinda, eucalyptus and bankalmi, at a 3% mixture, provided good protection for black gram seeds by reducing insect oviposition, F1 adult emergence, and grain infestation rates. The oil treatment did not show adverse effects on germination capability of seeds, even after three months of treatment.

Abstract Background: The emergence of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) has heightened the need for new chemical classes and innovative strategies to tackle TB infections. It is urgent to discover new classes of molecules without cross-resistance with currently used antimycobacterial drugs. Results: Eighteen new 8-substituted protoberberine derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their anti-mycobacterial activities against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) strain H37Rv. Among them, compound 7g was the most effective antitubercular agent with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.5 μg/mL. Moreover, it also afforded a potent antitubercular effect against clinically isolated MDR strains of M. tuberculosis with MICs ranging from 0.25 to 1.0 μg/mL, suggesting a novel mode of action. Conclusions: The structure−activity relationship (SAR) analysis revealed that introduction of a substituent at the 8-position in pseudoprotoberberine, especially an n-decyl, could significantly enhance the anti-TB activity. We consider 8-n-decylberberines to be a novel family of anti-tubercular agents with an advantage of inhibiting MDR strains of M. tuberculosis.

To design better ground test facilities and to specify handling qualities criteria, the aerodynamic parameters involved must be identified. The purpose of the study was to identify these parameters for the critical flight regime of hover through transition. Both analog and digital computers were used. The purpose of the analog simulation was to qualitatively analyze the behavior of VSTOL aircraft to control inputs and identify the most important derivatives. Two typical VSTOL aircraft were investigated. The method used to determine the important derivatives was that of varying the stability derivatives about some basic value. The amount of simulator response identified the most important derivatives. Next, the digital computer was used to affix a magnitude to the relative importance of each derivative. To establish the relative importance, a sensitivity factor was derived. The information necessary to calculate this factor was obtained from a mathematical analysis of the equations of motion. The important derivatives were identified for both longitudinal and lateral-directional motion.

The stability of the oil with 0.1 percent of these additives, detd. as time necessary for absorbing 10 ml. 0 at 175F, increased from 255 to 340-388 min. The corrosiveness of the oil with 1 percent additives decreased from 360 to 57-0.9 g./sq. m in the presence of 0.02 percent Cu naphthenate at 140 degrees for 25 hrs. Also, the gum-formation coeff. decreased simultaneously. The most efficient were the additives prepd. by condensation of phenyl-, and p-tert-amylphenylphosphorous acids with I and II, regarding both stability and anticorrosive properties. An investigation has been conducted on a series of tapered swept wings in the 6-foot-diameter rolling-flow test section of the Langley stabilfty tunnel under conditions simulating rolling flight. The results of the tests showed that a decrease in taper ratio (ratio of tip chord to root chord) of a swept wing caused a small decrease in damping in roll at low and moderate lift coefficients; at high lift coefficients, decreasing the taper ratio caused a large reduction in the damping in roll and greatly reduced the increase obtained for the untapered wing prior to maximum lift. For an unswept wing, a decrease in taper ratio caused a small decrease in the damping in roll throughout the lift-coefficient range. The rate of change with lift coefficient of the yawing moment due to roll and of the lateral force due to roll were slightly decreased at low lift coefficients by a decrease in taper ratio. Available theory generally predicts the effect of change in taper ratio on the rate of change of the yawing moment due to roll with lift coefficient and on the damping in roll at zero lift more accurately than it does the effect of sweep. Tip-suction effects, not accounted for by the theory, may cause large errors in the theoretical values of the yawing moment due to roll and the lateral force due to roll. For a swept wing the yawing moment due to roll can be estimated by applying a correction to the available theory by utilizing the experimental value of the lateral force for an unswept wing of the same aspect ratio and taper ratio (the tip-suction force) and the geometric characteristics of the wing.

The analysis of the stability derivatives of low-aspect-ratio triangular wings at subsonic and supersonic speeds, given in NACA TN No. l423, is extended to apply to triangular wings having large vertex angles and traveling at supersonic speeds. The lift, rolling moment due to siderlip, and damping in roll and pitch for this more general case have been treated elsewhere on the basis of the theory of small disturbances.

This report describes studies undertaken to ascertain the fate of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDXX), its homolog, octahydro-1,3,5,7- tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX) and their N-acetylated derivatives when subjected to biodegradation by mixed cultures under batch conditions. The nature of the biotransformation products and the mutagenic properties of the products and starting materials have been determined. Microbiological treatment has been proposed for the elimination of pollutants present in effluents from the manufacture of RDX and its cogeners. The data obtained in this study are needed for the development of the proposed process and to make sure that the waste waters receive an adequate treatment to meet environmental standards. The purpose of this thesis was to determine whether or not there are phenomenological differences between dynamic derivations calculated from F-15A rotary balance data and data from other sources. To make this determination, two additional data sets were obtained: (1) the F-15A design phase stability derivative data, and (2) the F-15A production phase stability derivative data. The lateral dynamic derivatives were then compared through derivatives of the lateral moments with respect to the rotation rate about the velocity vector (wind vector). The conclusion of the project was that differences exist between the data sets, but that the dominant characteristic were the same for all of the data sets; the differences in the data were not indicative of basic (phenomenological) the differences in the data itself. Therefore, the contention that oscillatory rates affect determination of the dynamic derivations was not substantiated by this study. (Author)

The principal goal of this research has been the synthesis and characterization of boron analogues of important biologically active molecules such as the amino acids. During this period of research synthesis were developed for esters and amides of a variety of simple boron analogues of amino acids. Also, routes to boron analogues of choline, acetylcholine and substituted acetylcholines were developed. Collaborative studies on the biological activity of many of these compounds were carried out by processor Iris H. Hall at University of North Carolina.

Early in the 1970's, the personnel at the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) recognized the need for a set of new dynamic test mechanisms for testing aircraft models at high angles of attack. At these angles of attack cross and cross-coupling derivatives may be significant in determining the aircraft's stability. Dynamic balances were fabricated to perform pitch, yaw, and roll dynamic stability tests of aircraft or large missile models at AEDC. The balances were designed to measure not only the direct derivatives but also cross and cross-coupling derivatives. The set of balances comprises a 4, 000-lb (normal-force) roll and a 4,000-lb pitch/yaw forced-oscillation balance to measure the direct damping derivatives and a five-component can-type balance to measure the cross and cross-coupling derivatives attributable to pitch or yaw. Extensive laboratory investigations of the balances' static and dynamic response characteristics were performed before wind tunnel tests of a 1/9-scale F-16A model in the AEDC Propulsion Wind Tunnel (16T) at Mach numbers from 0.2 to 1.4.

This is the first in a series of three papers in which the authors discuss a method for post-processing a finite element solution to obtain high accuracy approximations for displacements, stresses, stress intensity factors etc. Rather than take the values of these quantities directly from the finite element solution, they evaluate certain weighted averages of the solution over the entire region. These yield approximations that are of the same order of accuracy as the strain energy. They obtain error estimates, and also present some numerical examples to illustrate the practical effectively of the technique. In the third paper of this series the authors address the matters of adaptive mesh selection and a'posteriori error estimation. (Author)

The low energy singlet-singlet(s-s) and triplet-triplet (t-t) absorption spectra of fluorene and 2-amino fluorene were measured. Alos, the spectral locations of low-energy s-s and t-t intensity maxima of 2-methoxy, 2-hydroxy, 2,7-diamino, and 2-dimethylamino fluorene were recorded. When expressed in wavenumbers (energy) and within measurement accuracy, the following holds for the 2-position substituted fluorene: (a) the red shift caused by a certain substituent is about the same in both (singlet and triplet) manifolds; (b) the energy difference between s-s and t-t absorption maxima in fluorene as well as in all the substituted compounds is about the same and (c) the spectral red shifts observed in fluorene in the singlet and triplet manifold due to substitution by auxochromic groups can probably be used in fair approximation to estimate anticipated red shifts in other chromophores. For 2,7-diamino fluorene; p-terphenyl, p,p'diamino, p,p-diethylamino terphenyl, p-quaterphenyl; p,p'-diamino, p,p'diethylamino quaterphenyl, spectral relations (a) to (c) also hold rather well. Even though the polymer backbone is composed only of silicon silicon single bonds, all high molecular weight polysilanes absorb strongly in the UV. The position of this absorption depends not only on the nature of the substituents, but also on the conformation of the backbone. In this regard, materials where the polymer backbone is locked into a planar zigzag conformation absorb at much longer wavelengths than comparable materials where the backbone is either disordered or nonplaner (e.g., helical). A planar zigzag backbone is often observed for symmetrically substituted derivatives in the solid state when there are also significant intermolecular interactions such as side chain crystallization. When silvery films of the semiconducting polymer, trans ;'polyacetylene', (CH)x, are exposed to chlorine, bromine or iodine vapor, uptake of halogen occurs, and the electrical conductivity increases markedly (over seven orders of magnitude in the case of iodine) to give, depending on the extent of halogenation, silvery or silvery-black films, some of which have a remarkable high conductivity at room temperature. This paper deals with the computation of second or higher order greeks of financial securities. It combines two methods, Vibrato and automatic differentiation and compares with other methods. We show that this combined technique is faster than standard finite difference, more stable than automatic differentiation of second order derivatives and more general than Malliavin Calculus. We present a generic framework to compute any greeks and present several applications on different types of financial contracts: European and American options, multidimensional Basket Call and stochastic volatility models such as Heston's model. We give also an algorithm to compute derivatives for the Longstaff-Schwartz Monte Carlo method for American options. We also extend automatic differentiation for second order derivatives of options with non-twice differentiable payoff. 1. Introduction. Due to BASEL III regulations, banks are requested to evaluate the sensitivities of their portfolios every day (risk assessment). Some of these portfolios are huge and sensitivities are time consuming to compute accurately. Faced with the problem of building a software for this task and distrusting automatic differentiation for non-differentiable functions, we turned to an idea developed by Mike Giles called Vibrato. Vibrato at core is a differentiation of a combination of likelihood ratio method and pathwise evaluation. In Giles [12], [13], it is shown that the computing time, stability and precision are enhanced compared with numerical differentiation of the full Monte Carlo path. In many cases, double sensitivities, i.e. second derivatives with respect to parameters, are needed (e.g. gamma hedging). Finite difference approximation of sensitivities is a very simple method but its precision is hard to control because it relies on the appropriate choice of the increment. Automatic differentiation of computer programs bypass the difficulty and its computing cost is similar to finite difference, if not cheaper. But in finance the payoff is never twice differentiable and so generalized derivatives have to be used requiring approximations of Dirac functions of which the precision is also doubtful. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of Vibrato for second and higher derivatives. We will first compare Vibrato applied twice with the analytic differentiation of Vibrato and show that it is equivalent, as the second is easier we propose the best compromise for second derivatives: Automatic Differentiation of Vibrato. We consider fractional directional derivatives and establish some connection with stable densities. Solutions to advection equations involving fractional directional derivatives are presented and some properties investigated. In particular we obtain solutions written in terms of Wright functions by exploiting operational rules involving the shift operator. We also consider fractional advection diffusion equations involving fractional powers of the negative Laplace operator and directional derivatives of fractional order and discuss the probabilistic interpretations of solutions.

We prove a novel result wherein the density function of the gradients---corresponding to density function of the derivatives in one dimension---of a thrice differentiable function S (obtained via a random variable transformation of a uniformly distributed random variable) defined on a closed, bounded interval \Omega \subset R is accurately approximated by the normalized power spectrum of \phi=exp(iS/\tau) as the free parameter \tau-->0. The result is shown using the well known stationary phase approximation and standard integration techniques and requires proper ordering of limits. Experimental results provide anecdotal visual evidence corroborating the result.

The notion of a local fractional derivative (LFD) was introduced recently for functions of a single variable. LFD was shown to be useful in studying fractional differentiability properties of fractal and multifractal functions. It was demonstrated that the local Holder exponent/ dimension was directly related to the maximum order for which LFD existed. We have extended this definition to directional-LFD for functions of many variables and demonstrated its utility with the help of simple examples.

We obtain an intertwining relation between some Riemann-Liouville operators of order a in (1,2) connecting through a certain multiplicative identity in law the one-dimensional marginals of reflected completely asymmetric a-stable L\'evy processes. This document describes a basic experiment involving the sensitivity of the visual system to the modulation of speed of gratings moving in one direction across the visual field. The gratings were of different spatial frequencies, had different average speeds, and the speeds were modulated at different temporal frequencies. This was done in two stages using the method of adjustment. We also implemented a very sophisticated computer program allowing us to use a two-interval forced-choice paradigm in the context of a modified staircase method for accurately measuring thresholds for change of speed and how they are affected by the foregoing parameters, and others as well. Findings indicated that for all modulation frequencies, sensitivity to acceleration was uniform across all spatial frequencies at low average speeds. As average speed increased, there was an increasing monotonic increase in sensitivity for spatial frequency. Acceleration is proportional to modulation frequency as well as to the amplitude of the modulation of speed.

A vectorizable second order MCSCF method is first outlined and then shown to yield a unified framework from which to develop MCSCF and multi- reference CI energy derivatives. Non-adiabatic coupling matrix elements can be extracted from this framework by using a common orbital set to describe both states. CI non-adiabatic coupling matrix elements are simply obtained by employing transition density matrices in the multi-reference CI gradient program.

LibriVox’s weekly poetry project for the week of February 5, 2006 offers fourteen versions of "The Song My Paddle Sings" from the collection <i>Flint and Feather</i> by E. Pauline Johnson.<br /><br /> E. Pauline Johnson, also known as Tekahionwake, was born to the Mohawk Chief G.H.M. Johnson (Onwanonsyshon), and his wife, Emily S. Howells, a lady of pure English parentage. Pauline, born and raised in Canada, was a great reader and began writing poetry as a child. She died in 1913 after having poetry published in periodicals in several countries and collections of her work published in book form. 4Plan and Preface to a Dictionary of the English Language

The published dictionary was a huge book: with pages nearly 1½ feet tall and 20 inches wide, it contained 42,773 words; it also sold for the huge price of £4/10s. ($400?). It would be years before "Johnson's Dictionary", as it came to be known, would ever turn a profit; authors' royalties being unknown at that time, Johnson, once his contract to deliver the book was fulfilled, received no further monies connected to the book.<br><br> Johnson, once again a freelance writer, albeit now a famous one, faced a grim hand-to-mouth existence; however, in July 1762 the twenty-four year old King George III granted Johnson an annual pension of £300. A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the most notorious Pyrates is a 1724 book containing biographies of contemporary pirates. It's author uses the name Captain Charles Johnson, generally considered a pseudonym.<br /><br /> The real identity of the author was thought by some scholars to be Daniel Defoe, although this has since been disputed. The publisher Nathaniel Mist or somebody working for him are other suggested authors.<br /><br /> In the first volume, "Johnson" sticks fairly close to the available sources, though he embellishes the stories somewhat. Pauline Johnson or just Pauline Johnson, was a Canadian writer and performer popular in the late 19th century. Johnson was notable for her poems and performances that celebrated her First Nations heritage; she also had half English ancestry. One such poem is the frequently anthologized "The Song My Paddle Sings". Her poetry was published in Canada, the United States and Great Britain. Johnson was one of a generation of widely read writers who began to define a Canadian literature.

This was the Fortnightly Poetry project for January 29, 2012.<br><br>In 1892 the opportunity of a lifetime came to this young versifier, when Frank Yeigh, the president of the Young Liberals' Club, of Toronto, conceived the idea of having an evening of Canadian literature, at which all available Canadian authors should be guests and read from their own works.<br><br>Among the authors present on this occasion was Pauline Johnson, who contributed to the programme one of her compositions, entitled "A Cry from an Indian Wife"; and when she recited without text this much-discussed poem, which shows the Indian's side of the North-West Rebellion, she was greeted with tremendous applause from an audience which represented the best of Toronto's art, literature and culture. She was the only one on the programme who received an encore, and to this she replied with one of her favourite canoeing poems.<br><br>The following morning the entire press of Toronto asked why this young writer was not on the platform as a professional reader; while two of the dailies even contained editorials on the subject, inquiring why she had never published a volume of her poems, and insisted so strongly that the public should hear more of her, that Mr. Frank Yeigh arranged for her to give an entire evening in Association Hall within two weeks from the date of her first appearance. But would his sense of belonging and solidarity to the black community of the time catch up with him at the end? "It is very likely that the Negroes of the United States have a fairly correct idea of what the white people of the country think of them, for that opinion has for a long time been and is still being constantly stated; but they are themselves more or less a sphinx to the whites. It is curiously interesting and even vitally important to know what are the thoughts of ten millions of them concerning the people among whom they live. In these pages it is as though a veil had been drawn aside: the reader is given a view of the inner life of the Negro in America, is initiated into the "freemasonry," as it were, of the race. Johnson's only novel, <i>The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man</i>, was originally published anonymously in 1912. It is a fictional novel written as a memoir of an unnamed biracial narrator who grew up in the South during the Reconstruction and post-Reconstruction eras. It is a story in which the narrator relates how as a young boy he initially assumed that he was white, and how his notions of racial identity were suddenly turned upside down one day—how from that moment on he was inclined to view himself and the world about him from the perspective of blackness. According to her own request she was buried in Stanley Park, Vancouver's beautiful heritage of the forest primeval. A simple stone surrounded by rustic palings marks her grave and on this stone is carved the one word "Pauline." There she lies among ferns and wild flowers a short distance from Siwash Rock, the story of which she has recorded in the legends of her race. In time to come a pathway to her grave will be worn by lovers of Canadian poetry who will regard it as one of the most romantic of our literary shrines.
