1NLO QCD Corrections To Graviton Induced Deep Inelastic Scattering

By

We consider Next-to-Leading-Order QCD corrections to ADD graviton exchange relevant for Deep Inelastic Scattering experiments. We calculate the relevant NLO structure functions by calculating the virtual and real corrections for a set of graviton interaction diagrams, demonstrating the expected cancellation of the UV and IR divergences. We compare the NLO and LO results at the centre-of-mass energy relevant to HERA experiments as well as for the proposed higher energy lepton-proton collider, LHeC, which has a higher fundamental scale reach.

2Determination Of Strange Sea Distributions From Neutrino-Nucleon Deep Inelastic Scattering

By

We present an analysis of the nucleon strange sea extracted from a global Parton Distribution Function fit including the neutrino and anti-neutrino dimuon data by the CCFR and NuTeV collaborations, the inclusive charged lepton-nucleon Deep Inelastic Scattering and Drell-Yan data. The (anti-)neutrino induced dimuon analysis is constrained by the semi-leptonic charmed-hadron branching ratio $B_\mu=(8.8\pm0.5)%$, determined from the inclusive charmed hadron measurements performed by the FNAL-E531 and CHORUS neutrino emulsion experiments. Our analysis yields a strange sea suppression factor $\kappa(Q^2=20{\rm GeV}^2)=0.62\pm 0.04$, the most precise value available, an $x$-distribution of total strange sea that is slightly softer than the non-strange sea, and an asymmetry between strange and anti-strange quark distributions consistent with zero (integrated over $x$ it is equal to $0.0013 \pm 0.0009$ at $Q^2=20{\rm GeV}^2$).

3Heavy Flavour Production In Deep--Inelastic Scattering - Two--Loop Massive Operator Matrix Elements And Beyond

By

We calculate the O($\eps$)--term of the two--loop massive operator matrix elements for twist 2--operators, which contribute to the heavy flavour Wilson coefficients in unpolarized deep--inelastic scattering in the asymptotic limit $Q^2 \gg m^2.$ Our calculation was performed in Mellin space using Mellin--Barnes integrals and generalized hypergeometric functions. The O($\eps$)--term contributes in the renormalization at 3--loop order.

5Measurement Of Feynman-x Spectra Of Photons And Neutrons In The Very Forward Direction In Deep-Inelastic Scattering At HERA

By

Measurements of normalised cross sections for the production of photons and neutrons at very small angles with respect to the proton beam direction in deep-inelastic $ep$ scattering at HERA are presented as a function of the Feynman variable $x_F$ and of the centre-of-mass energy of the virtual photon-proton system $W$. The data are taken with the H1 detector in the years 2006 and 2007 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of $131 \mathrm{pb}^{-1}$. The measurement is restricted to photons and neutrons in the pseudorapidity range $\eta>7.9$ and covers the range of negative four momentum transfer squared at the positron vertex $6

7Comparison Of Deep Inelastic Electron-Photon Scattering Data With The Herwig And Phojet Monte Carlo Models

By

Deep inelastic electron-photon scattering is studied in the Q**2 range from 1.2 to 30 GeV**2 using the LEP1 data taken with the ALEPH, L3 and OPAL detectors at centre-of-mass energies close to the mass of the Z boson. Distributions of the measured hadronic final state are corrected to the hadron level and compared to the predictions of the HERWIG and PHOJET Monte Carlo models. For large regions in most of the distributions studied the results of the different experiments agree with one another. However, significant differences are found between the data and the models. Therefore the combined LEP data serve as an important input to improve on the Monte Carlo models.

9Master Formula For The Three-Gluon Contribution To Single Spin Asymmetry In Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

By

We derive a "master formula" for the contribution of the three-gluon correlation function in the nucleon to the twist-3 single-spin-dependent cross section for semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, ep^\uparrow\to eDX. This is an extension of the similar formula known for the so-called soft-gluon-pole contribution induced by the quark-gluon correlation function in a variety of processes. Our master formula reduces the relevant interfering partonic subprocess with the participation of the three gluons to the Born cross sections for the \gamma^*g\to c\bar{c} scattering, which reveals the new structure behind the twist-3 single spin asymmetry and simplifies the actual calculation greatly. A possible extension to higher order corrections is also discussed.

We consider the leading and sub-leading twist $T$-odd and even contributions to the $\cos 2\phi$ azimuthal asymmetry in unpolarized dilepton production in Drell-Yan Scattering. We estimate the contributions' effects at $500 {\rm GeV}$, $ 50 {\rm GeV}$, and $25 {\rm GeV}$ energies in the framework of the parton model using a quark diquark-spectator model of the nucleon to approximate the soft contributions.

11Radiative Electroweak Effects In Deep Inelastic Scattering Of Polarized Leptons By Polarized Nucleons

The one-loop electroweak radiative correction of the lowest order to lepton current for deep inelastic scattering of longitudinally polarized leptons by polarized nucleons is obtained in model independent way. The detailed numerical analysis within kinematical requirements of future polarization collider experiments is performed. 12Deep-inelastic Scattering And The Operator Product Expansion In Lattice QCD

By

We discuss the determination of deep-inelastic hadron structure in lattice QCD. By using a fictitious heavy quark, direct calculations of the Compton scattering tensor can be performed in Euclidean space that allow the extraction of the moments of structure functions. This overcomes issues of operator mixing and renormalisation that have so far prohibited lattice computations of higher moments. This approach is especially suitable for the study of the twist-two contributions to isovector quark distributions, which is practical with current computing resources. While we focus on the isovector unpolarised distribution, our method is equally applicable to other quark distributions and to generalised parton distributions. By looking at matrix elements such as $ $ (where $V^\mu$ and $A^\nu$ are vector and axial-vector heavy-light currents) within the same formalism, moments of meson distribution amplitudes can also be extracted.

13Tagged Spectator Deep-inelastic Scattering Off The Deuteron As A Tool To Study Neutron Structure

By

We give an overview of a model to describe deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) off the deuteron with a spectator proton, based on the virtual nucleon approximation (VNA). The model accounts for the final-state interactions (FSI) of the DIS debris with the spectator proton. Values of the rescattering cross section are obtained by fits to high-momentum spectator data. By using the so-called "pole extrapolation method", free neutron structure functions can be obtained by extrapolating low-momentum spectator proton data to the on-shell neutron pole. We apply this method to the BONuS data set and find a surprising Bjorken $x$ dependence, indicating a possible rise of the neutron to proton structure function ratio at high $x$.

14Towards Semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering At Next-to-next-to-leading Order

By

In this paper, we compute the first set of ${\cal O}(\alpha_s^2)$ corrections to semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering structure functions. We start by studying the impact of the contribution of the partonic subprocesses that open at this order for the longitudinal structure function. We perform the full calculation analytically, and obtain the expression of the factorized cross section at this order. Special care is given to the study of their flavour decomposition structure. We analyze the phenomenological effect of the corrections finding that, even though expected to be small a priori, it turns out to be sizable with respect to the previous order know, calling for a full NNLO calculation.

Obtained constraints are discussed and compared with the available experimental data.

16Extraction Of The Ratio Of The Neutron To Proton Structure Functions From Deep Inelastic Scattering

By

We study the nuclear ($A$) dependence of the European Muon Collaboration (EMC) effect at high values of $x$ ($x \geq 0.6$). Our approach makes use of conventional nuclear degrees of freedom within the Relativistic Impulse Approximation. By performing a non-relativistic series expansion we demonstrate that relativistic corrections make a substantial contribution to the effect at $x \gtrsim 0.6$ and show that the ratio of neutron to proton structure functions extracted from a global fit to all nuclei is not inconsistent with values obtained from the deuteron.

18Effects Of Transversity In Deep-inelastic Scattering By Polarized Protons

By

Single-spin asymmetries for pions and charged kaons are measured in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of positrons and electrons off a transversely nuclear-polarized hydrogen target. The dependence of the cross section on the azimuthal angles of the target polarization (phi_S)and the produced hadron (phi) is found to have a substantial sin(phi+phi_S) modulation for the production of pi+, pi- and K+. This Fourier component can be interpreted in terms of non-zero transversity distribution functions and non-zero favored and disfavored Collins fragmentation functions with opposite sign. For pi0 and K- production the amplitude of this Fourier component is consistent with zero.

19Semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering Off Few-Nucleon Systems: Tagging The EMC Effect And Hadronization Mechanisms With Detection Of Slow Recoiling Nuclei

By

The semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of electrons off the deuteron ($^2H \equiv D$) and $^3He$ with detection of slow protons and deuterons, respectively, i.e. the processes $D(e,e'p)X$ and $^3He(e,e'D)X$, are calculated within the spectator mechanism, taking into account the final state interaction of the hadronizing quark with the detected protons and deuterons, respectively. It is shown that by a proper choice of the kinematics the origin of the EMC effect and the details of the interaction between the hadronizing quark and the nuclear medium can be investigated at a level which cannot be reached by inclusive deep inelastic scattering. A comparison of our calculations with recently available experimental data on the process $D(e,e'p)X$ shows a good agreement in the backward hemisphere of the emitted nucleons. Theoretical predictions at the energies thyat will be available at the upgraded Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facilty are presented, and the possibility to investigate the proposed semi-inclusive processes at electron-ion colliders is briefly discussed.

20Extracting A Free Neutron Structure Function From Proton And Deuteron Deep Inelastic Scattering Data

By

Due to the lack of a free neutron target the structure function of the neutron cannot be measured directly and is therefore extracted from deuteron and proton DIS data. Because the deuteron is a bound nuclear system, in order to extract the neutron structure function, one needs to apply model dependent theoretical corrections which dominate the uncertainty at the large xB region. We present here a correlation between the magnitude of the EMC effect and the amount of two nucleon Short Range Correlation (2N-SRC) pairs in nuclei. Using this correlation we propose a phenomenological procedure to extract the free neutron structure function in the xB range of 0.3 to 0.7.

21Diffractive Deep Inelastic Scattering In An AdS/CFT Inspired Model: A Phenomenological Study

By

The analytical treatment of the nonperturbative QCD dynamics is one of main open questions of the strong interactions. Currently, it is only possible to get some qualitative information about this regime considering other QCD-like theories, as for example the N=4 super Yang-Mills (SYM), where one can perform calculations in the nonperturbative limit of large 't Hooft coupling using the Anti-de Sitter space/Conformal field theory (AdS/CFT). Recently, the high energy scattering amplitude was calculated in the AdS/CFT approach, applied to deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and confronted with the $F_2$ HERA data. In this work we extend the nonperturbative AdS/CFT inspired model for diffractive processes and compare its predictions with a perturbative approach based on the Balitsky - Kovchegov (BK) equation. We demonstrate that the AdS/CFT inspired model is not able to describe the current $F_2^{D(3)}$ HERA data and predicts a similar behavior to that from BK equation in the range $10^{-7} \lesssim x_{IP} \lesssim 10^{-4}$. At smaller values of $x_{IP}$ the diffractive structure function is predicted to be energy independent.

22Measurement Of Partonic Nuclear Effects In Deep-Inelastic Neutrino Scattering Using MINERvA

By

The MINERvA collaboration reports a novel study of neutrino-nucleus charged-current deep inelastic scattering (DIS) using the same neutrino beam incident on targets of polystyrene, graphite, iron, and lead. Results are presented as ratios of C, Fe, and Pb to CH. The ratios of total DIS cross sections as a function of neutrino energy and flux-integrated differential cross sections as a function of the Bjorken scaling variable x are presented in the neutrino-energy range of 5 - 50 GeV. Good agreement is found between the data and predicted ratios, based on charged-lepton nucleus scattering, at medium x and low neutrino energies. However, the data rate appears depleted in the vicinity of the nuclear shadowing region, x < 0.1. This apparent deficit, reflected in the DIS cross-section ratio at high neutrino energy , is consistent with previous MINERvA observations and with the predicted onset of nuclear shadowing with the the axial-vector current in neutrino scattering.

23QCD Analysis Of Nucleon Structure Functions In Deep-inelastic Neutrino-nucleon Scattering: Laplace Transform And Jacobi Polynomials Approach

By

We present a detailed QCD analysis of nucleon structure functions $xF_3 (x, Q^2)$, based on Laplace transforms and Jacobi polynomials approach. The analysis corresponds to the next-to-leading order and next-to-next-to-leading order approximation of perturbative QCD. The Laplace transform technique, as an exact analytical solution, is used for the solution of nonsinglet Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations at low- and large-$x$ values. The extracted results are used as input to obtain the $x$ and Q$^2$ evolution of $xF_3(x, Q^2)$ structure functions using the Jacobi polynomials approach. In our work, the values of the typical QCD scale $\Lambda_{\overline{\rm MS}}^{(n_f)}$ and the strong coupling constant $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$ are determined for four quark flavors ($n_f=4$) as well. A careful estimation of the uncertainties shall be performed using the Hessian method for the valence-quark distributions, originating from the experimental errors. We compare our valence-quark parton distribution functions sets with those of other collaborations; in particular with the {\tt BBG}, {\tt CT14}, {\tt MMHT14} and {\tt NNPDF} sets, which are contemporary with the present analysis. The obtained results from the analysis are in good agreement with those from the literature.

24Quark Energy Loss In Semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering Of Leptons On Nuclei

By

Semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering on nuclear targets is an ideal tool to study the energy loss effect of an outgoing quark in a nuclear medium. By means of the short hadron formation time, the experimental data with quark hadronization occurring outside the nucleus are picked out. A leading-order analysis is performed for the hadron multiplicity ratios as a function of the energy fraction on helium, neon, and copper nuclei relative to deuteron for the various identified hadrons. It is shown that the nuclear effects on parton distribution functions can be neglected. It is found that the theoretical results considering the nuclear modification of fragmentation functions due to quark energy loss are in good agreement with the experimental data. Whether the quark energy loss is linear or quadratic with the path length is not determined. The obtained energy loss per unit length is 0.38 \pm 0.03 GeV/fm for an outgoing quark by the global fit.

26Measurement Of Dijet Production In Diffractive Deep-Inelastic Scattering At HERA

By

The production of dijets is measured in diffractive deep-inelastic scattering at HERA. The data were recorded with the H1 detector at DESY in the years 2003-2007. Diffractive events are selected by requiring a gap in the rapidity distribution of the hadronic systen, where no particles are produced. Two jets are selected with transverse momenta in the hadronic-centre-of-mass system larger than 4 and 5.5GeV, respectively. Cross sections are measured single- and doubledifferentially in various kinematic quantities. The data are found to be in good agreement with NLO QCD calculations based on diffractive parton densities determined frominclusive diffractive cross section measurements.

27Measurement Of Isolated Photon Production In Deep-Inelastic Scattering At HERA

By

The production of isolated photons in deep-inelastic scattering $ep\to e \gamma X$ is measured with the H1 detector at HERA. The measurement is performed in the kinematic range of negative four-momentum transfer squared $4 50$ GeV. The analysis is based on a total integrated luminosity of 227~pb$^{-1}$. The production cross section of isolatedphotons with a transverse energy in the range $3 < E_T^\gamma < 10$ GeV and pseudorapidity range $-1.2 < \eta^\gamma < 1.8$ is measured as a function of $E_T^\gamma$, $\eta^\gamma$ and $Q^2$. Isolated photon cross sections are also measured for events with no jets or at least one hadronic jet. The measurements are compared with predictions from Monte Carlo generators modelling the photon radiation from the quark and the electron lines, as well as with calculations at leading and next to leading order in the strong coupling. The predictions significantly underestimate the measured cross sections.

28Medium Effects In The Deep-inelastic Charged Lepton/neutrino-A Scattering

By

In this work, we have discussed the recent developments that have taken place to understand the differences in the weak $F_{2A}^{Weak} (x,Q^2)$ and electromagnetic $F_{2A}^{EM} (x,Q^2)$ nuclear structure functions. Also we present the results of our work on nuclear medium effects on $F_{2A}^{Weak} (x,Q^2)$ and $F_{2A}^{EM} (x,Q^2)$ for a wide range of $x$ and $Q^2$. These results have been obtained using a microscopic nuclear model, where to incorporate nuclear medium effects, Fermi motion, binding energy, nucleon correlations, mesonic contributions from pion and rho mesons and shadowing effects are considered. The calculations are performed in local density approximation using relativistic nucleon spectral function. We have also compared the theoretical results with the recent experimental data on electromagnetic and weak structure functions. Furthermore, we have studied the nuclear medium effects in Drell-Yan(DY) process and present the results for differential cross section, and the results are compared with the data of E772 experiment.

29String-Gauge Dual Description Of Deep Inelastic Scattering At Small-$x$

By

The AdS/CFT correspondence in principle gives a new approach to deep inelastic scattering as formulated by Polchinski and Strassler. Subsequently Brower, Polchinski, Strassler and Tan (BPST) computed the strong coupling kernel for the vacuum (or Pomeron) contribution to total cross sections. By identifying deep inelastic scattering with virtual photon total cross section, this allows a self consistent description at small-$x$ where the dominant contribution is the vacuum exchange process. Here we formulate this contribution and compare it with HERA small-$x$ DIS scattering data. We find that the BPST kernel along with a very simple local approximation to the proton and current "wave functions" gives a remarkably good fit not only at large $Q^2$ dominated by conformal symmetry but also extends to small $Q^2$, supplemented by a hard-wall cut-off of the AdS in the IR. We suggest that this is a useful phenomenological parametrization with implications for other diffractive processes, such as double diffractive Higgs production.

30Nuclear Antishadowing In Neutrino Deep Inelastic Scattering

By

The shadowing and antishadowing of nuclear structure functions in the Gribov-Glauber picture is due respectively to the destructive and constructive interference of amplitudes arising from the multiple-scattering of quarks in the nucleus. The effective quark-nucleon scattering amplitude includes Pomeron and Odderon contributions from multi-gluon exchange as well as Reggeon quark-exchange contributions. We show that the coherence of these multiscattering nuclear processes leads to shadowing and antishadowing of the electromagnetic nuclear structure functions in agreement with measurements. This picture leads to substantially different antishadowing for charged and neutral current reactions, thus affecting the extraction of the weak-mixing angle $\theta_W$. We find that part of the anomalous NuTeV result for $\theta_W$ could be due to the nonuniversality of nuclear antishadowing for charged and neutral currents. Detailed measurements of the nuclear dependence of individual quark structure functions are thus needed to establish the distinctive phenomenology of shadowing and antishadowing and to make the NuTeV results definitive.

31Nuclear Shadowing In Neutrino Deep Inelastic Scattering

We discuss effect of nuclear shadowing in neutrino deep-inelastic scattering in terms of non perturbative parton model. We found that for small Bjorken $x$ and large $Q^2$ the structure function $F_3$ is shadowed in nuclei about two times as stronger as $F_2$. The underlying reason and phenomenological aspects of this observation are discussed.

32Neutral Strange Particle Production In Deep Inelastic Scattering At HERA

By

This paper presents measurements of \k\ and \lam\ production in neutral current, deep inelastic scattering of 26.7 GeV electrons and 820 GeV protons in the kinematic range $ 10 < Q^{2} < 640 $ GeV$^2$, $0.0003 < x < 0.01$, and $y > 0.04$. Average multiplicities for \k\ and \lam\ production are determined for transverse momenta \ \ptr\ $> 0.5 $ GeV and pseudorapidities $\left| \eta \right| < 1.3$. The multiplicities favour a stronger strange to light quark suppression in the fragmentation chain than found in $e^+ e^-$ experiments. The production properties of \k's in events with and without a large rapidity gap with respect to the proton direction are compared. The ratio of neutral \k's to charged particles per event in the measured kinematic range is, within the present statistics, the same in both samples.

33Deep Inelastic Scattering And Forward Neutral Pion Production At NLO

By

We present a detailed phenomenological study of forward hadron neutral pion production in deep inelastic scattering, with both the direct and the resolved contributions calculated to NLO accuracy. A comparison of the theoretical predictions for the various distributions with the H1 data and a study of stability of the QCD predictions under changes of scales is the focus of this study. We obtain a very good overall description of the recent H1 data with the choice of scale Q^2 + E^2_{perp}, in contrast to the (Q^2 + E^2_{perp})/2 required earlier when the resolved contribution was included only at LO accuracy. We find a more modest variation of the predictions, as the scale is changed from (Q^2 + E^2_{perp})/2 to 2(Q^2 + E^2_{perp}), as compared to the case where the resolved contribution was included only at LO accuracy. This variation is of the order of the rather large experimental errors. Unfortunately, this fact prevents us from concluding that perturbation theory gives an unambiguous prediction for forward particle production in deep inelastic scattering. However, the overall success of perturbative QCD in explaining the small x_{Bj} data means that perhaps a full resummation of the BFKL ladder is not called for. We notice the need for rather large resolved contributions to explain the data at low x_{Bj} even at somewhat larger Q^2 values.

The positive weight next-to-leading-order matching formalism (POWHEG) is applied to Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) and the related Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion process in the Herwig++ Monte Carlo event generator. This scheme combines parton shower simulation and next-to-leading-order calculation in a consistent way which only produces positive weight events. The simulation contains a full implementation of the truncated shower required to correctly model soft emissions in an angular-ordered parton shower.

35Resonance Region Structure Functions And Parity Violating Deep Inelastic Scattering

By

The primary motive of parity violating deep inelastic scattering experiments has been to test the standard model, particularly the axial couplings to the quarks, in the scaling region. The measurements can also test for the validity of models for the off-diagonal structure functions $F_{1,2,3}^{\gamma Z}(x,Q^2)$ in the resonance region. The off-diagonal structure functions are important for the accurate calculation of the $\gamma Z$-box correction to the weak charge of the proton. Currently, with no data to determine $F_{1,2,3}^{\gamma Z}(x,Q^2)$ directly, models are constructed by modifying existing fits to electromagnetic data. We present the asymmetry value for deuteron and proton target predicted by several different $F_{1,2,3}^{\gamma Z}(x,Q^2)$ models, and demonstrate that there are notable disagreements.

36Lorentz Violation In Deep Inelastic Electron-Proton Scattering

Lorentz violation in the quark sector induces a sidereal time dependence in electron-proton, proton-antiproton and proton-proton cross sections. At high energies nonperturbative effects are buried in universal nucleon parton distribution functions and Lorentz violating effects are calculable in perturbation theory. We focus on deep inelastic electron-proton scattering data collected from ZEUS and H1 at HERA and show that a sideral time analysis of these events is able to set strong constraints on most of the coefficients we consider.

40Problem Of Statistical Model In Deep Inelastic Scattering Phenomenology

Recent Deep Inelastic data leads to an up-down quark asymmetry of the nucleon sea. Explanations of the flavour asymmetry and the di-lepton production in proton-nucleus collisions call for a temperature $T \approx 100$ MeV in a statistical model. This T may be conjectured as being due to the Fulling-Davies-Unruh effect. But it is not possible to fit the structure function itself.

We discuss the connection with other formulations and show how the free quark model prediction, $g_2=0$, changes smoothly into the Wandzura-Wilczek (WW) relation for quark masses small relative to the nucleon mass. Previous contradictory parton model predictions are shown to follow from an inconsistent treatment of the mass shell conditions. The description is extended to include quark mass corrections.

43Higher Twists In Deep Inelastic Scattering

By

We perform an exploratory study of higher twist contributions to deep inelastic scattering. We estimate the size of two major sources of higher twist, namely absorptive corrections and the vector meson dominance (VMD) contribution. We find that they give a sizeable higher twist component of F_2. For example at x = 0.01 it is about 8% (17%) at Q^2 = 10 GeV^2 (4 GeV^2), reaching up to 27% at x = 10^{-4} and Q^2 = 4 GeV^2. At the smaller x value the largest contribution comes from absorptive corrections, while at the larger values of x the VMD term dominates.

44Nuclear Corrections In Neutrino Deep Inelastic Scattering And The Extraction Of The Strange Quark Distribution

By

Recent measurement of the structure function $F_2^\nu$ in neutrino deep inelastic scattering allows us to compare structure function measured in neutrino and charged lepton scattering for the first time with reasonable precision. The comparison between neutrino and muon structure functions made by the CCFR Collaboration indicates that there is a discrepancy between these structure functions at small Bjorken x values. In this talk I examine two effects which might account for the experimental discrepancy: nuclear shadowing corrections for neutrinos and contributions from strange and anti strange quarks.

45Open Charm Production In Deep Inelastic Scattering At Next-to-leading Order At HERA

By

An introduction and overview of charm production in deep inelastic scattering at HERA is given. The existing next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations are then reviewed, and key results are summarized. Finally, comparisons are made with the most recent HERA data, and unresolved issues are highlighted.

46QCD Rescattering Mechanism For Diffractive Deep Inelastic Scattering

By

We present a QCD-based model where rescattering between final state partons in deep inelastic scattering leads to events with large rapidity gaps and a leading proton. In the framework of this model the amplitude for multiple gluon exchanges is calculated in the eikonal approximation to all orders in perturbation theory. Both large and small invariant mass M_X limits are considered. The model successfully describes the precise HERA data on the diffractive deep inelastic cross section in the whole available kinematical range and gives new insight into the density of gluons at very small momentum fractions in the proton.

47Small-x Deep Inelastic Scattering Via The Pomeron In AdS

By

We examine the process of Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) in the small-x limit, where Pomeron exchange dominates. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study Pomeron exchange in the dual string theory in AdS space, which allows us to study DIS at strong coupling. Two possibilities are examined, a purely conformal model, and a model with a hard-wall cutoff introduced to take into account the effects of confinement. Comparing our calculations with HERA DIS data, we find a very good agreement not only at large $Q^2$ dominated by conformal symmetry, but due to our strong coupling approach which allows us to go beyond traditional pQCD methods, at small $Q^2$ as well, taking into account all available HERA small x data.

48Nuclear Shadowing In Deep Inelastic Scattering On Nuclei: A Closer Look

By

The measurement of the nuclear structure function $F_2^A (x,Q^2)$ at the future electron-ion collider (EIC) will be of great relevance to understand the origin of the nuclear shadowing and to probe gluon saturation effects. Currently there are several phenomenological models, based on very distinct approaches, which describe the scarce experimental data quite successfully. One of main uncertainties comes from the schemes used to include the effects associated to the multiple scatterings and to unitarize the cross section. In this paper we compare the predictions of three different unitarization schemes of the nuclear structure function which use the same theoretical input to describe the projectile-nucleon interaction. In particular, we consider as input the predictions of the Color Glass Condensate formalism, which reproduce the inclusive and diffractive $ep$ HERA data. Our results suggest that the experimental analysis of $F_2^A$ will be able to discriminate between the unitarization schemes.

49Final-state Interactions In Deep-inelastic Scattering From A Tensor Polarized Deuteron Target

By

Deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) from a tensor polarized deuteron is sensitive to possible non-nucleonic components of the deuteron wave function. To accurately estimate the size of the nucleonic contribution, final-state interactions (FSIs) need to be accounted for in calculations. We outline a model that, based on the diffractive nature of the effective hadron-nucleon interaction, uses the generalized eikonal approximation to model the FSIs in the resonance region, taking into account the proton-neutron component of the deuteron. The calculation uses a factorized model with a basis of three resonances with mass $W 0.2$, but the overall size of $A_{zz}$ remains small. For tagged spectator DIS, FSIs effects are largest at spectator momenta around 300 MeV and for forward spectator angles.
