We continuously adjust our movements to achieve our goals in an ever-changing environment. This flexibility can be the result of deliberate changes to behaviour, for example, when we strategically hit a tennis ball with higher momentum while playing against the wind. However, behavioural changes can also occur implicitly, without deliberation or intention; for example, when we automatically adjust the forces required after changing to a tennis racket with slightly different weight. Strategy-based and implicit learning can be dissociated in behavioural experiments, however, their underlying neural circuitry has remained poorly understood. Our goal is to understand the causal contribution of cerebello-thalamo-cortical circuits for implicit and strategy-based motor learning in humans. The cerebellum, thalamus, and motor cortex form a network that is critically involved in motor control, evident, for example, in essential tremor (ET). While tremor is their cardinal symptom, patients with ET also show reduced motor adaptation compared to healthy controls. Interestingly, motor adaptation problems are amplified in ET patients receiving deep brain stimulation of the ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalamus (VIM-DBS), a thalamic region functionally connected to the cerebellum and motor cortex. It is unknown if this cerebellum-VIM-motor cortex network is involved in implicit motor learning, strategy-based motor learning, or both. Our goal is to close this gap. We are currently examining patients with ET, treated with VIM-DBS, as well as age- and sex-matched healthy controls, in two behavioural experiments, one designed to isolate implicit learning, and the other strategy-based learning. Each patient completes each experiment in two sessions, with VIM-DBS turned ON vs. OFF (session order counterbalanced across patients). Both experiments (order counterbalanced across subjects) involve centre-out reaching movements to a visual target, with vision of the hand occluded by the experimental apparatus (KINARM End-Point lab). In the experiment that tests for strategy-based learning, the participants’ task is to adjust the aim point of their reach so that they move at a certain angle relative to a visual target, rather than straight towards the target. Specifically, the angle between movement and target should be identical to the angular offset between two lines shown on a computer screen at the beginning of each trial, in a different part of the workspace. The task thus involves the strategy-based learning system (i.e., an aiming strategy). In the experiment that tests for implicit learning, a visual cursor is presented as participants reach to the target. The radial position of the cursor is aligned with the moving hand. However, the angular position of the cursor follows a pre-specified angle with respect to the target. Participants are informed that the angular direction of the cursor is fixed and independent of the direction of their hand movement. They are instructed to ignore the cursor and reach directly to the visual target. Changes in reach angle are attributed to the automatic operation of the implicit learning system. Based on previous evidence that the cerebellum is involved in both strategy-based and implicit learning, we hypothesize that VIM-DBS impairs both learning types.

We present a Bayesian approach to adapting parameters of a well-trained context-dependent, deep-neural-network, hidden Markov model (CD-DNN-HMM) to improve automatic speech recognition performance. Given an abundance of DNN parameters but with only a limited amount of data, the effectiveness of the adapted DNN model can often be compromised. We formulate maximum a posteriori (MAP) adaptation of parameters of a specially designed CD-DNN-HMM with an augmented linear hidden networks connected to the output tied states, or senones, and compare it to feature space MAP linear regression previously proposed. Experimental evidences on the 20,000-word open vocabulary Wall Street Journal task demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed framework. In supervised adaptation, the proposed MAP adaptation approach provides more than 10% relative error reduction and consistently outperforms the conventional transformation based methods. Furthermore, we present an initial attempt to generate hierarchical priors to improve adaptation efficiency and effectiveness with limited adaptation data by exploiting similarities among senones.

Recent studies reveal that a deep neural network can learn transferable features which generalize well to novel tasks for domain adaptation. However, as deep features eventually transition from general to specific along the network, the feature transferability drops significantly in higher layers with increasing domain discrepancy. Hence, it is important to formally reduce the dataset bias and enhance the transferability in task-specific layers. In this paper, we propose a new Deep Adaptation Network (DAN) architecture, which generalizes deep convolutional neural network to the domain adaptation scenario. In DAN, hidden representations of all task-specific layers are embedded in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space where the mean embeddings of different domain distributions can be explicitly matched. The domain discrepancy is further reduced using an optimal multi-kernel selection method for mean embedding matching. DAN can learn transferable features with statistical guarantees, and can scale linearly by unbiased estimate of kernel embedding. Extensive empirical evidence shows that the proposed architecture yields state-of-the-art image classification error rates on standard domain adaptation benchmarks.

We present an error-controlled mesh refinement procedure for needle insertion simulation and apply it to the simulation of electrode implantation for deep brain stimulation, including brain shift. Our approach enables to control the error in the computation of the displacement and stress fields around the needle tip and needle shaft by suitably refining the mesh, whilst maintaining a coarser mesh in other parts of the domain. We demonstrate through academic and practical examples that our approach increases the accuracy of the displacement and stress fields around the needle without increasing the computational expense. This enables real-time simulations. The proposed methodology has direct implications to increase the accuracy and control the computational expense of the simulation of percutaneous procedures such as biopsy, brachytherapy, regional anesthesia, or cryotherapy and can be essential to the development of robotic guidance.

In this paper, we propose a novel unsupervised domain adaptation algorithm based on deep learning for visual object recognition. Specifically, we design a new model called Deep Reconstruction-Classification Network (DRCN), which jointly learns a shared encoding representation for two tasks: i) supervised classification of labeled source data, and ii) unsupervised reconstruction of unlabeled target data.In this way, the learnt representation not only preserves discriminability, but also encodes useful information from the target domain. Our new DRCN model can be optimized by using backpropagation similarly as the standard neural networks. We evaluate the performance of DRCN on a series of cross-domain object recognition tasks, where DRCN provides a considerable improvement (up to ~8% in accuracy) over the prior state-of-the-art algorithms. Interestingly, we also observe that the reconstruction pipeline of DRCN transforms images from the source domain into images whose appearance resembles the target dataset. This suggests that DRCN's performance is due to constructing a single composite representation that encodes information about both the structure of target images and the classification of source images. Finally, we provide a formal analysis to justify the algorithm's objective in domain adaptation context.

Face recognition (FR) is the most preferred mode for biometric-based surveillance, due to its passive nature of detecting subjects, amongst all different types of biometric traits. FR under surveillance scenario does not give satisfactory performance due to low contrast, noise and poor illumination conditions on probes, as compared to the training samples. A state-of-the-art technology, Deep Learning, even fails to perform well in these scenarios. We propose a novel soft-margin based learning method for multiple feature-kernel combinations, followed by feature transformed using Domain Adaptation, which outperforms many recent state-of-the-art techniques, when tested using three real-world surveillance face datasets.

This article is from Scientific Reports , volume 4 . Abstract Many studies have investigated the individual effects of sedimentation or inundation on the performance of wetland plants, but few have examined the combined influence of these processes. Wetland plants might show greater morphological plasticity in response to inundation than to sedimentation when these processes occur simultaneously since inundation can negate the negative effects of burial on plant growth. Here, we evaluate this hypothesis by assessing growth of the emergent macrophyte Polygonum hydropiper under flooding (0 and 40 cm) and sedimentation (0, 5, and 10 cm), separately and in combination. Deep burial and high water level each led to low oxidation-reduction potential, biomass (except for 5-cm burial), and growth of thick, short roots. These characteristics were generally more significant under high water level than under deep burial conditions. More biomass was allocated to stems in the deep burial treatments, but more to leaves in the high water level treatments. Additionally, biomass accumulation was lower and leaf mass ratio was higher in the 40-cm water level + 10-cm burial depth treatment than both separate effects. Our data indicate that inundation plays a more important role than sedimentation in determining plant morphology, suggesting hierarchical effects of environmental stressors on plant growth.
