3Whom Do We Include When Death Is Salient? The Moderating Roles Of Ethnic Identity Importance And Self-Worth In Social Inclusion Decisions

By

The purpose of this study is to examine how mortality salience (MS) influences social inclusion behavior in an intergroup context, and how this effect is moderated by individuals’ ethnic identification (i.e., the importance they place on being Turkish) and their self-esteem. Specifically, we investigate whether reminding participants of their mortality affects their likelihood of including ingroup versus outgroup members in a social task, and whether this relationship is moderated by (1) the centrality of Turkish identity and (2) self-esteem levels. To assess social inclusion behavior, participants will complete a Cyberball task in which they choose how frequently to throw the ball to two virtual players: an Arab player (outgroup) and a Turkish player (ingroup). The proportion of throws to the Turkish player will serve as the primary dependent variable.

4Fearlessness About Death And Suicidal Ideation: Does Religious Identity Matter?

By

The current study aims to test whether religious identity moderates the association between fearlessness about death and suicidal ideation. Religion is a particularly salient aspect of patient background in treatment (Knox, Caitlin, Casper, & Schlosser, 2005; Lindgren & Coursey, 1995; Pargament, 1997; Puchalski, Larson, & Lu, 2001). For some patients, religion provides a source of comfort and meaning that they feel aids their healing process (Pargament, 1997). However, the role of religion in some aspects of mental illness, particularly suicidality, is understudied, and what literature does exist on the topic presents inconsistent findings (Gearing & Alonzo, 2018). The Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicidal Behavior (IPTSB) (Joiner, 2005; Orden et al., 2010), a leading theory of suicide, suggests that fearlessness about death should correlate with willingness to attempt suicide. How religious identity interacts with this theory is uncertain, as religious identity has been correlated with both a reduced fear of death (Ellis & Wahab, 2013; Jong et al., 2018) and reduced willingness to attempt suicide (Lawrence et al., 2016), although the literature is inconsistent. These findings are counterintuitive to the IPTSB. The current study seeks to (1) clarify the association between religious identity and fearlessness about death in a psychiatric sample and (2) test whether religious identity moderates the association between fearlessness about death and suicidal ideation. We use a de-identified dataset from a transdiagnostic partial hospital program. We will first conduct t-tests comparing fearlessness about death in patients who do and do not identify as religious. Second, we will conduct a regression model predicting suicidal ideation from fearlessness about death, as well as the interaction of religious identity and fearlessness about death. We will present results from 405 patients. Results inform theories of suicide and elucidate whether religious identity changes the predicted relationships for specific risk factors for suicidal ideation. Results may also highlight the significance of religious identity in treatment.

13Before Kukulkán - Bioarchaeology Of Maya Life, Death, And Identity At Classic Period Yaxuná

This volume illuminates human lifeways in the northern Maya lowlands prior to the rise of Chichén Itzá. This period and area have been poorly understood on their own terms, obscured by scholarly focus on the central lowland Maya kingdoms. "Before Kukulkán" is anchored in three decades of interdisciplinary research at the Classic Maya capital of Yaxuná, located at a contentious crossroads of the northern Maya lowlands. Using bioarchaeology, mortuary archaeology, and culturally sensitive mainstream archaeology, the authors create an in-depth regional understanding while also laying out broader ways of learning about the Maya past. Part 1 examines ancient lifeways among the Maya at Yaxuná, while part 2 explores different meanings of dying and cycling at the settlement and beyond: ancestral practices, royal entombment and desecration, and human sacrifice. The authors close with a discussion of the last years of occupation at Yaxuná and the role of Chichén Itzá in the abandonment of this urban center. "Before Kukulkán" provides a cohesive synthesis of the evolving roles and collective identities of locals and foreigners at the settlement and their involvement in the region’s trajectory. Theoretically informed and contextualized discussions offer unique glimpses of everyday life and death in the socially fluid Maya city. These findings, in conjunction with other documented series of skeletal remains from this region, provide a nuanced picture of the social and biocultural dynamics that operated successfully for centuries before the arrival of the Itzá.

18Above The Death Pits, Beneath The Flag : Youth Voyages To Poland And The Performance Of Israeli National Identity

By

21Barney & Yoshimura ( 2020) Death Related Grief And Disenfranchised Identity A Communication Approach

By

The death of a significant person in one’s life forces individuals to engage in a number of grief-related tasks, including reconstructing a narrative about the relationship, resituating their relationship with the deceased individual, and developing a new sense of self post-loss. The dominant narrative of grief, however, generally assumes that the experience is a finite, linear process of detachment. Given past research challenging the reality of that experience, we draw upon Doka’s (2002) theory of disenfranchised grief to propose that grief is not only a possible temporary state of disenfranchisement, but rather a perpetual, ongoing state of being disenfranchised. This condition is primarily maintained by the need to constantly navigate the lines between the dominant narrative of grief upheld in a given culture and one’s personal experience and performance of it. We propose a narrative approach to the concept of grief as a potential solution to this problem, and outline several new potential avenues for research on grief.

Cookbook from the era of John Kellogg, whose vegetarian meat substitutes Protose and Nuttolene are featured heavily in this volume.
