Previous work has shown that there are two major complexity barriers in the synthesis of fault-tolerant distributed programs, namely generation of fault-span, the set of states reachable in the presence of faults, and, resolving deadlock states, where the program has no outgoing transitions. Although symbolic techniques can improve the performance of synthesis algorithms by orders of magnitude, efficient heuristics are still needed to overcome the aforementioned obstacles. Thus, motivated by the idea of partitioning the transition relation of distributed programs across multiple threads, in this paper, we introduce an efficient parallel shared memory algorithm for resolving deadlock states in symbolic synthesis of distributed programs. In spite of notorious resistance of symbolic algorithms for parallelization, experimental results show that our parallel algorithm exhibits superlinear performance improvement.

We present a static deadlock analysis approach for C/pthreads. The design of our method has been guided by the requirement to analyse real-world code. Our approach is sound (i.e., misses no deadlocks) for programs that have defined behaviour according to the C standard, and precise enough to prove deadlock-freedom for a large number of programs. The method consists of a pipeline of several analyses that build on a new context- and thread-sensitive abstract interpretation framework. We further present a lightweight dependency analysis to identify statements relevant to deadlock analysis and thus speed up the overall analysis. In our experimental evaluation, we succeeded to prove deadlock-freedom for 262 programs from the Debian GNU/Linux distribution with in total 2.6 MLOC in less than 11 hours.

We consider the problem of verifying deadlock freedom for symmetric cache coherence protocols. In particular, we focus on a specific form of deadlock which is useful for the cache coherence protocol domain and consistent with the internal definition of deadlock in the Murphi model checker: we refer to this deadlock as a system- wide deadlock (s-deadlock). In s-deadlock, the entire system gets blocked and is unable to make any transition. Cache coherence protocols consist of N symmetric cache agents, where N is an unbounded parameter; thus the verification of s-deadlock freedom is naturally a parameterized verification problem. Parametrized verification techniques work by using sound abstractions to reduce the unbounded model to a bounded model. Efficient abstractions which work well for industrial scale protocols typically bound the model by replacing the state of most of the agents by an abstract environment, while keeping just one or two agents as is. However, leveraging such efficient abstractions becomes a challenge for s-deadlock: a violation of s-deadlock is a state in which the transitions of all of the unbounded number of agents cannot occur and so a simple abstraction like the one above will not preserve this violation. In this work we address this challenge by presenting a technique which leverages high-level information about the protocols, in the form of message sequence dia- grams referred to as flows, for constructing invariants that are collectively stronger than s-deadlock. Efficient abstractions can be constructed to verify these invariants. We successfully verify the German and Flash protocols using our technique.

Deadlock detection scheduling is an important, yet often overlooked problem that can significantly affect the overall performance of deadlock handling. Excessive initiation of deadlock detection increases overall message usage, resulting in degraded system performance in the absence of deadlocks; while insufficient initiation of deadlock detection increases the deadlock persistence time, resulting in an increased deadlock resolution cost in the presence of deadlocks. The investigation of this performance tradeoff, however, is missing in the literature. This paper studies the impact of deadlock detection scheduling on the overall performance of deadlock handling. In particular, we show that there exists an optimal deadlock detection frequency that yields the minimum long-run mean average cost, which is determined by the message complexities of the deadlock detection and resolution algorithms being used, as well as the rate of deadlock formation, denoted as $\lambda$. For the best known deadlock detection and resolution algorithms, we show that the asymptotically optimal frequency of deadlock detection scheduling that minimizes the overall message overhead is ${\cal O}((\lambda n)^{1/3})$, when the total number $n$ of processes is sufficiently large. Furthermore, we show that in general fully distributed (uncoordinated) deadlock detection scheduling cannot be performed as efficiently as centralized (coordinated) deadlock detection scheduling.

Two way buffer system is a system that exhibits transfer of data using two buffers concurrently. It includes processes that synchronize to exchange data with each other along with executing certain delays between these synchronizations. In existing Tiny Two Way Buffer System, both generators produce packets in half duplex manner in no time, deterministic time, and non deterministic time. Analysis of the model for above time options leads the model in deadlock. The model can be out of the deadlock if timings in the model is incorporated in alternative fashion. The generators produce packets after a delay of 10 seconds. However, generator one has an initial shift of 5 seconds after which it begins sending a packet every 10 seconds. Hence, initial delay for generator one is 15 seconds and for generator two it is 10 seconds. Due to this initial shift, both generators produce packets alternatively and is deadlock free as the packets do not meet at the same time instant. Moreover, the existing system model is not concurrent and hence takes more time for packet transfer in every iteration. In this paper we have proposed a model of buffer system using an additional dummy buffer for transfer of data packets, we thus checking the model with various time models as no time, deterministic time and non deterministic time. The results of proposed model under above time models are in deadlock. We achieve deadlock free situation by introducing appropriate delay in various buffers of the proposed system, the delay timing is nondeterministic time. The new approach speeds up the transfer of packets, as a result the transfer of data becomes concurrent, deadlock free and hence the model proposed is time efficient. Simulation results shows that the proposed two way buffer system is fully concurrent and time efficient as compared to the existing buffer system.

Concurrency is the source of many real-world software reliability and security problems. Concurrency defects are difficult to detect because they defy conventional software testing techniques due to their non-local and non-deterministic nature. We focus on one important aspect of this problem: static detection of the possibility of deadlock - a situation in which two or more processes are prevented from continuing while each waits for resources to be freed by the continuation of the other. This thesis proposes a flow-insensitive interprocedural static analysis that detects the possibility that a program can deadlock at runtime. Our analysis proceeds in two steps. The first extracts the real call graph decorated with acquired locks from the target program. The second analysis this decorated graph to report how a possible deadlock may occur at runtime. We demonstrate our analysis via a prototype implementation that detects deadlock conditions within two small Java programs. The two principle limitations of our analysis are on the target program: (1) we need its real call graph and (2) its overall size is limited. Construction of the real call graph requires perfect aliasing information. The program's size our technique is able to analyze is roughly 35 kSLOC.
