5NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20050160177: Database Integrity Monitoring For Synthetic Vision Systems Using Machine Vision And SHADE

By

In an effort to increase situational awareness, the aviation industry is investigating technologies that allow pilots to visualize what is outside of the aircraft during periods of low-visibility. One of these technologies, referred to as Synthetic Vision Systems (SVS), provides the pilot with real-time computer-generated images of obstacles, terrain features, runways, and other aircraft regardless of weather conditions. To help ensure the integrity of such systems, methods of verifying the accuracy of synthetically-derived display elements using onboard remote sensing technologies are under investigation. One such method is based on a shadow detection and extraction (SHADE) algorithm that transforms computer-generated digital elevation data into a reference domain that enables direct comparison with radar measurements. This paper describes machine vision techniques for making this comparison and discusses preliminary results from application to actual flight data.

6NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19870014665: The Development Of A Prototype Intelligent User Interface Subsystem For NASA's Scientific Database Systems

By

The National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) has initiated an Intelligent Data Management (IDM) research effort which has as one of its components the development of an Intelligent User Interface (IUI).The intent of the latter is to develop a friendly and intelligent user interface service that is based on expert systems and natural language processing technologies. The purpose is to support the large number of potential scientific and engineering users presently having need of space and land related research and technical data but who have little or no experience in query languages or understanding of the information content or architecture of the databases involved. This technical memorandum presents prototype Intelligent User Interface Subsystem (IUIS) using the Crustal Dynamics Project Database as a test bed for the implementation of the CRUDDES (Crustal Dynamics Expert System). The knowledge base has more than 200 rules and represents a single application view and the architectural view. Operational performance using CRUDDES has allowed nondatabase users to obtain useful information from the database previously accessible only to an expert database user or the database designer.

8ERIC EJ1136651: Microsoft Enterprise Consortium: A Resource For Teaching Data Warehouse, Business Intelligence And Database Management Systems

By

Data is a vital resource for businesses; therefore, it is important for businesses to manage and use their data effectively. Because of this, businesses value college graduates with an understanding of and hands-on experience working with databases, data warehouses and data analysis theories and tools. Faculty in many business disciplines try to prepare students for this data-oriented business environment by teaching database and business intelligence concepts in their courses. However, many faculty may not be aware of various important online resources. For example, the Microsoft Enterprise Consortium (MEC) provides data and instructional resources to faculty in business colleges through access to several data sets that could be used for teaching a range of topics including fundamentals of database management, beginning and advanced SQL, data warehouses, and business intelligence (data mining, data cubes and dimensional reporting). The purpose of this paper is to introduce the Microsoft Enterprise Consortium, to discuss the various teaching resources it provides, to present an overview of the materials available through the MEC, and to give an example of successful implementation and utilization of MEC resources.

12DTIC ADA105109: A Functional Framework For Database Management Systems.

By

The concept of DBMS architecture played an important role in the design, analysis, and comparison of DBMSs as well as in the development of other database concepts. the ANSI/SPARC prototypical database system architecture was a major contribution in this development. The architecture raised many issues, stimulated considerable research, and posed a number of new problems. Since the basic formulation of the ANSI architecture, in 1974, little consideration was given to resolving problems and accommodating new and future developments. The main problems concern its unnecessary ridgidity. The contributions of this paper are a distinction between DBMS framework and DBMS architecture, and a functional DBMS framework. The framework was developed using a functional approach in which a DEMS is characterized abstractly in terms of functional components and their potential relationships. The approach is based on the notions of modularity and data abstraction as developed in software engineering and programming languages. (Author)

13DTIC ADA610762: DBSecSys: A Database Of Burkholderia Mallei Secretion Systems

By

Bacterial pathogenicity represents a major public health concern worldwide. Secretion systems are a key component of bacterial pathogenicity, as they provide the means for bacterial proteins to penetrate host-cell membranes and insert themselves directly into the host cells' cytosol. Burkholderia mallei is a Gram-negative bacterium that uses multiple secretion systems during its host infection life cycle. To date, the identities of secretion system proteins for B. mallei are not well known, and their pathogenic mechanisms of action and host factors are largely uncharacterized. Description: We present the Database of Burkholderia mallei Secretion Systems (DBSecSys), a compilation of manually curated and computationally predicted bacterial secretion system proteins and their host factors. Currently, DBSecSys contains comprehensive experimentally and computationally derived information about B. mallei strain ATCC 23344. The database includes 143 B. mallei proteins associated with five secretion systems, their 1,635 human and murine interacting targets, and the corresponding 2,400 host-B. mallei interactions. The database also includes information about 10 pathogenic mechanisms of action for B. mallei secretion system proteins inferred from the available literature. Additionally, DBSecSys provides details about 42 virulence attenuation experiments for 27 B. mallei secretion system proteins. Users interact with DBSecSys through a Web interface that allows for data browsing, querying, visualizing and downloading. Conclusions: DBSecSys provides a comprehensive, systematically organized resource of experimental and computational data associated with B. mallei secretion systems. It provides the unique ability to study secretion systems not only through characterization of their corresponding pathogen proteins, but also through characterization of their host-interacting partners.

22DTIC ADA160284: A Performance Measurement Methodology For Software Multiple-Backend Database Systems.

By

Software multiple-backend database systems provide high-performance, cost-effective database management support for systems with very large and growing databases. One backend computer, called the backend controller (or, briefly, controller), controls transaction processing of the remaining backend computers, i.e., backends, and interfaces with the host computers. These systems are designed to provide performance-gain and capacity-growth potential by increasing the number of backends connected to their controllers. This thesis develops a comprehensive methodology for the performance evaluation of multiple-backend database systems. It also applies this methodology to develop a test-database set and test-transaction mix for the evaluation of the multi-backend database system, MBDS. (Author)

33DTIC ADA566072: Tri-service Disability Evaluation Systems Database Analysis And Research Annual Report 2012

By

The Accession Medical Standards Analysis and Research Activity (AMSARA) has provided the Department of Defense with evidence-based evaluations of accession standards since 1996. As part of this ongoing research activity, data are collected from each service s Disability Evaluation System (DES). Disability evaluation is administered at the service level, with each branch of service responsible for the evaluation of disability in its members. Variability in the type of data available in existing AMSARA databases for each service is present as the result of service level collection of data on disability evaluations and the lack of accession information on many individuals evaluated for disability. AMSARA s mission was expanded in FY 2009 to include audits and studies of existing disability evaluation system by the request of the Office of Assistant Secretary of Defense, Health Affairs. This report describes analyses conducted in fiscal year 2012 of existing DES data collected for accessions and disability research through the end of fiscal year 2011.

36DTIC ADA462530: A Multilevel Transaction Problem For Multilevel Secure Database Systems And Its Solution For The Replicated Architecture

By

A user of a database management system has an intuitive idea of a transaction as a sequence of database commands that he or she submits. The user expects this sequence of commands to be executed in the order of submission, without interference from other database commands submitted by other users. Techniques for doing this while concurrently supporting multiple database users are well known for conventional (i.e., not multilevel) database systems [2]. Transaction management theory for conventional database systems is not only mature, but useful in practice. The corresponding theory for multilevel secure database systems is still developing but some progress has been made [3,5,6,7,8,9,10].

37Analysis Of Cloud-based Database Systems

By

To take advantage of cloud computing benefits that boost an enterprise’s efficiency, innovation, and cost savings, the Department of Defense’s (DOD) cloud computing strategy needs to evaluate databases as a service. If the DOD is going to prioritize outsourced database server hosting, each application’s performance and agility of each must be assessed to determine if they can thrive in this new environment. We performed an experiment to compare the performance between a current Naval Postgraduate School standalone database server and a cloud version developed specifically for the experiment. The cloud environment was created both with resources less equal to and greater than the live standalone server. We simulated cloud environment traffic based on the type of queries observed in production and collected data to compare its performance against the standalone database. The results show that the cloud database performed similarly to or better than our standalone server, with equivalent resources. It achieved this level of performance without utilizing additional resources. We increased the resources dedicated to our cloud environment to test scalability, and we witnessed that the time needed to execute queries decreased significantly. We therefore concluded that our database would perform and scale favorably in a cloud environment.

38A Performance Measurement Methodology For Software Multiple-backend Database Systems.

42Namespace Database (NSDB) Protocol For Federated File Systems

By

This document describes a file system federation protocol that enables file access and namespace traversal across collections of independently administered fileservers. The protocol specifies a set of interfaces by which fileservers with different administrators can form a fileserver federation that provides a namespace composed of the file systems physically hosted on and exported by the constituent fileservers.

43A Seamless Integration Of Association Rule Mining With Database Systems

By

The need for Knowledge and Data Discovery Management Systems (KDDMS) that support ad hoc data mining queries has been long recognized. A significant amount of research has gone into building tightly coupled systems that integrate association rule mining with database systems. In this paper, we describe a seamless integration scheme for database queries and association rule discovery using a common query optimizer for both. Query trees of expressions in an extended algebra are used for internal representation in the optimizer. The algebraic representation is flexible enough to deal with constrained association rule queries and other variations of association rule specifications. We propose modularization to simplify the query tree for complex tasks in data mining. It paves the way for making use of existing algorithms for constructing query plans in the optimization process. How the integration scheme we present will facilitate greater user control over the data mining process is also discussed. The work described in this paper forms part of a larger project for fully integrating data mining with database management.

1Trawler

By

Book's cover

The Trawler is a short story revolving around the trying life of a group of bank fishermen based in Gloucester. Skipper Hugh Glynn worked his men hard; some said too hard, and Arthur Snow was one who had paid the ultimate price.

Arthur's close friend Simon Kippen decided he'd ask to take the place of his fallen friend aboard Hugh Glynn's vessel as a dory mate, and from there we have a tale of the open seas between Gloucester and Newfoundland where perhaps only the names and locations have changed from the countless stories of similar nature; the key being that this one, however, is first hand.
