1Open Source In-Memory Database Systems With Redis Labs Chief Product Officer Alvin Richards

By

We're back with How I Launched This: A SaaS story! This week, Stephanie Wong (@stephr_wong) talks with Alvin Richards about Redis Labs, a company optimizing the Redis open source in-memory database system to build better managed tools for enterprise clients.Alvin begins the show describing how his love of solving complex development problems and great people skills have put him in a unique position to act as intermediary between engineers and clients, gaining insights into real-world problems and how to solve them. Looking to the future, Alvin's team also anticipates client needs, creating database products that will continue to help clients as their projects evolve.Later in the show, Alvin describes how the Redis system built in the cloud was reworked to also provide on-prem offerings. We learn how Redis Labs was able to fill a gap in the market by offering a database product that both developers and clients could understand, adapt, and use. Alvin introduces us to other Redis Labs products, including Redis for Enterprise which allows tiering between memory forms, in-memory caching, scaling, and more for a flexible database experience. We wrap up the show with a discussion of what it's like coordinating the development of such a large open source project and why Redis Labs supports open source. Alvin offers advice to other companies, stressing the importance of building solutions with both the creator and client in mind and educating clients and developers to use the software effectively. We talk about the future of open source in SaaS companies and how important it will be for scaling SaaS technology. Alvin concludes by encouraging everyone to ultimately find joy in what they do.Episode Links:RedisRedis LabsDockerMemorystoreMongoDBElasticRedis University

4NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20090034253: Implementation Of An Online Database For Chemical Propulsion Systems

By

The Johns Hopkins University, Chemical Propulsion Information Analysis Center (CPIAC) has been working closely with NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC); NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC); the University of Alabama at Huntsville (UAH); The Johns Hopkins University, Applied Physics Laboratory (APL); and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to capture satellite and spacecraft propulsion system information for an online database tool. The Spacecraft Chemical Propulsion Database (SCPD) is a new online central repository containing general and detailed system and component information on a variety of spacecraft propulsion systems. This paper only uses data that have been approved for public release with unlimited distribution. The data, supporting documentation, and ability to produce reports on demand, enable a researcher using SCPD to compare spacecraft easily, generate information for trade studies and mass estimates, and learn from the experiences of others through what has already been done. This paper outlines the layout and advantages of SCPD, including a simple example application with a few chemical propulsion systems from various NASA spacecraft.

7Component Reliability Database For Weapons Systems

By

By combining accurate real time data collection, statistical process control (SPC) methods, and a reliable simulation program, system engineers and Naval logisticians will be better able to realize real savings in monetary terms, increased Operational Availability and decreased mission time. This study concentrates on one weapon system, the 5 sec 54 MK 45 gun system. We developed a real time data collection program that is currently being used by Comarco Engineering Support Division to collect data from naval gunfire support missions. SPC methods are then used to identify deficiencies with specific blocks of the gun system. By having a reliable simulation of the weapon system, like the one written at NPS for the 5 sec 54 MK 45, the program manager is better able to evaluate the various alternatives of spending the programs money, e.g., increase the reliability of a component or reduce the repair time. This way he is better able to spend the programs money more effectively in order to improve the readiness of the weapon system and the U. S. Navy

8DTIC ADA168530: Implementation Techniques For Main Memory Database Systems.

By

With the availability of very large, relatively inexpensive main memories, it is becoming possible to keep large databases resident in main memory. This paper considers the changes necessary to permit a relational database system to take advantage of large amounts of main memory. The authors evaluate AVL vs. B+- tree access methods for main memory databases, hash-based query processing strategies vs. sort-merge, and study recovery issues when most or all of the database fits in main memory. As expected, B+- trees are the preferred storage mechanism unless more than 80-90% of the database fits in main memory. A somewhat surprising result is that hash based query processing strategies are advantageous for large memory situations. Keywords: Access; Algorithms. (Author)

23DNAtraffic--a New Database For Systems Biology Of DNA Dynamics During The Cell Life.

By

This article is from Nucleic Acids Research , volume 40 . Abstract DNAtraffic (http://dnatraffic.ibb.waw.pl/) is dedicated to be a unique comprehensive and richly annotated database of genome dynamics during the cell life. It contains extensive data on the nomenclature, ontology, structure and function of proteins related to the DNA integrity mechanisms such as chromatin remodeling, histone modifications, DNA repair and damage response from eight organisms: Homo sapiens, Mus musculus, Drosophila melanogaster, Caenorhabditis elegans, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, Escherichia coli and Arabidopsis thaliana. DNAtraffic contains comprehensive information on the diseases related to the assembled human proteins. DNAtraffic is richly annotated in the systemic information on the nomenclature, chemistry and structure of DNA damage and their sources, including environmental agents or commonly used drugs targeting nucleic acids and/or proteins involved in the maintenance of genome stability. One of the DNAtraffic database aim is to create the first platform of the combinatorial complexity of DNA network analysis. Database includes illustrations of pathways, damage, proteins and drugs. Since DNAtraffic is designed to cover a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines, it has to be extensively linked to numerous external data sources. Our database represents the result of the manual annotation work aimed at making the DNAtraffic much more useful for a wide range of systems biology applications.

31Eclipsing Binaries In The MACHO Database: New Periods And Classifications For 3031 Systems In The Large Magellanic Cloud

By

Eclipsing binaries offer a unique opportunity to determine fundamental physical parameters of stars using the constraints on the geometry of the systems. Here we present a reanalysis of publicly available two-color observations of about 6800 stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, obtained by the MACHO project between 1992 and 2000 and classified as eclipsing variable stars. Of these, less than half are genuine eclipsing binaries. We determined new periods and classified the stars, 3031 in total, using the Fourier parameters of the phased light curves. The period distribution is clearly bimodal, reflecting refer to the separate groups of more massive blue main sequence objects and low mass red giants. The latter resemble contact binaries and obey a period-luminosity relation. Using evolutionary models, we identified foreground stars. The presented database has been cleaned of artifacts and misclassified variables, thus allowing searches for apsidal motion, tertiary components, pulsating stars in binary systems and secular variations with time-scales of several years.

36Temporal Data, Temporal Data Models, Temporal Data Languages And Temporal Database Systems.

By

The study of temporal database systems is relatively new in the field of computer science. Two developments have led to the present interest. The advances of the storage technology for large amounts of data and applications' requirements for time-dependent data have prompted our study of temporal databases. This thesis conducts a survey of the major research areas concerning temporal databases. Temporal data, taxonomies of temporal data models, temporal data languages, and temporal database systems are presented. It is argued here that future database systems should handle the temporal domain by an integrated temporal database system. By understanding the present technology and the need of temporal database systems, our research in the area of real-time temporal database systems can begin. It is the purpose of this thesis to provide the background information and research references of temporal database systems as a first step towards the real-time database system research. Real-time database systems are time-constrained and temporally constituted. Solutions in temporal database systems can contribute to the design of real-time military applications using temporal database computers.

37Microsoft Research Video 153019: Scalable, Consistent, And Elastic Database Systems For Cloud Platforms

By

Cloud computing has emerged as a multi-billion dollar industry and as a successful paradigm for web application deployment. Economies-of-scale, elasticity, and pay-per-use pricing have been the biggest promises of cloud. Database management systems (DBMSs) serving these web applications form a critical component of the cloud software stack. These DBMSs must be able to scale-out to clusters of commodity servers to serve thousands of applications and their huge amounts of data. Moreover, to minimize the operating costs such DBMSs must also be elastic, i.e. posses the ability to increase and decrease the cluster size in a live system. This is in addition to serving a variety of applications (i.e. support multitenancy) while being self-managing, fault-tolerant, and highly available. The overarching goal of my research is to propose abstractions, protocols, and paradigms to design efficient and scalable database management systems that address the unique set of challenges posed by the cloud. My dissertation shows that with careful choice of design and features, it is possible to architect scalable DBMSs that efficiently execute transactions at scale to ease application design while being elastic and self-managing to simplify deployment and management. In this talk, I will outline my work that embodies this principle. In the first part, I will present techniques and system architectures to enable efficient and scalable transaction processing on clusters of commodity servers. In the second part, I will present techniques for on-demand database migration in a live system, a primitive operation critical to support lightweight elasticity as a first class notion in DBMSs. I will conclude the talk with a discussion of possible future directions. ©2011 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

38ERIC EJ1101919: Database Management Systems: A Case Study Of Faculty Of Open Education

By

We live in the information and the microelectronic age, where technological advancements become a major determinant of our lifestyle. Such advances in technology cannot possibly be made or sustained without concurrent advancement in management systems (5). The impact of computer technology on organizations and society is increasing as new technologies evolve and existing technologies expand (5). Because of the influences of the innovations in the computer technology, people can also build their own computerized systems with easy-to-use construction tools. Management is a process by which certain goals are achieved trough the use of resources like materials, people, money, time. These resources are considered to be inputs, and the attainment of the goals is viewed as the output of the process. Database systems continue to be a key aspect of Computer Science & Engineering today. Representing knowledge within a computer is one of the central challenges of the field. Database research has focused primarily on this fundamental issue (6). This paper presents a database management system developed for AOF (Faculty of Open Education) course books. Its rationale is based on the development of a database application that share data and operations through a database. It supports organization's manipulation and retrieval of data. In order to organize large amounts of data (book's names, ISBN numbers, number printed; authors' names, and addresses, etc.) similar user interfaces are developed for different types of users. In addition, they can create special reports. It also encourages users who have no previous programming experience. The detail of the study is presented in the third part of the paper. In the second part of the paper, some knowledge about management information systems and database management systems are given.

42DTIC ADA202628: Development Of A DBase III Plus Database For Office Automation Within The Department Of Logistics Management, School Of Systems And Logistics

By

The purpose of this thesis was to program a database system written in dBase III Plus for use in AFIT/LSM. The system was to be hosted on a personal computer so that it could be transportable between the different computers in the office and conveniently used by as many personnel as possible. The program was intended to replace as much manual paperwork as possible and to provide a means to quickly access, sort, and to efficiently answer queries regarding the department faculty. The final result was intended to automate the routine office functions. This automation would relieve the department personnel from mundane duties so that they could concentrate their time on more productive pursuits. The product of these efforts was the Integrated Faculty Information System (IFIS). The IFIS is a menu driven system that utilizes 19 databases that are interrelated to form one large database system. The database system has the capability to contain all the vital professional and demographic information on each member of the staff. The IFIS provides a means to input all the appropriate information and to modify preexisting information within the database system. Keywords: Office automation, Computer programming, Database management systems, Databases, Personal computers, Theses.

48DTIC ADA450018: The National SExploiting Database Management Systems In Shipbuilding (The National Shipbuilding Research Program)

By

The thought occurred to me while sitting here listening to these excellent presentations that those of you who were in the SIC session yesterday concerned with defining data processing problems missed our session which was involved in solving them. Our basic discussion was on database administration, starting out by defining data as a corporate resource that should be managed, mainly because it costs money. It costs money to manipulate it, it costs money if you cannot access it. We talked about today's environment in data processing as being fragmented, characterized by the lack of controls - the usual syndrome of everybody wanting to own their own data.

49ERIC EJ1082858: Software Application For Supporting The Education Of Database Systems

By

The article introduces an application which supports the education of database systems, particularly the teaching of SQL and PL/SQL in Oracle Database Management System environment. The application has two parts, one is the database schema and its content, and the other is a C# application. The schema is to administrate and store the tasks and the solutions, and it has a stored procedure which performs a syntactic verification of the solutions. The C# program helps the teacher organize the tasks and give feedback to the students. The main goal of the software application was to support the active learning method for database systems. With its help the students can practise alone, and they can get feedback from the teacher on their solutions

50A Robust And Computational Characterisation Of Peer-to-Peer Database Systems

By

In this paper we give a robust logical and computational characterisation of peer-to-peer database systems. We first define a pre- cise model-theoretic semantics of a peer-to-peer system, which allows for local inconsistency handling. We then characterise the general computa- tional properties for the problem of answering queries to such a peer-to- peer system. Finally, we devise tight complexity bounds and distributed procedures for the problem of answering queries in few relevant special cases.

3Heron Nest

By

Pleasant family drama set in early 1900's or late 1890's upstate New York. The Herron clan, led by heroic, inventive, handicapped older brother Billy, has fallen on hard times due to one of the depressions that occurred before the Great one of the 30's. He manages to charm their way out of the tenements and into the country where he and his younger siblings farm their way to success, albeit on a small, Waltons-esque scale. Features many detailed gardening tips. Minor quibble with a sub-plot involving borderline incest but all in all, an inspirational work for the get-er-dun generation. - Summary by BellonaTimes

5Gringo In Mañana-Land

By

Foster was a World War I veteran, world wanderer, journalist, embassy attaché, stoker on ships, miner, stowaway, bandit’s prisoner in Mexico, who wrote of Latin America and the Orient. He died an early death of pneumonia at his mother’s house in New York state. This 1924 book is a prime example of his witty travel writing and close observation. The New York Times reported that in 1919 he started travelling and for some ten years he seldom remained in one place. (New York Times obituary 16 March 1932) (Summary by David Wales)

6Asgard Stories: Tales from Norse Mythology

By

Book's cover

Asgard Stories - Tales from Norse Mythology. To all our Children who have loved the hearing of these Asgard Stories. This little volume is the outcome of several years experience in telling to classes of children the classic myths, both southern and northern. <br><br> "A broad simplicity, so very different from the light gracefulness of the old Greek paganism, distinguishes this Norse system. It is thought, the genuine thought of deep, rude, earnest minds, fairly opened to the things about them, - a face-to-face and heart-to-heart inspection of things, - the first characteristic of all good thought in all times." wrote Carlyle. <br><br> Anderson, the author of “Norse Mythology,” wrote: “In the Norse mythology the centralizing idea is its peculiar feature; in it lies its strength and beauty. The one myth and the one divinity is inextricably in communion with the other; and thus also the idea of unity, centralization, is a prominent feature and one of the chief characteristics of the Teutonic nations."
