Solutions To Selected Exercises  An Introduction To Database Systems Bipin C. DESAI

Programming decisions, such as scheduling, planning and coordinating, are made in every type of organization. In situations where these decisions are made by an expert who uses information contained in large databases, it could be advantageous for the organization to employ an expert system coupled with a database to assist in the decision process. This thesis proposes an approach for building expert database systems to support programming environments. To test this approach, a prototype expert database system is developed for a typical programming environment at a classical music radio station that employs experts to select music. The process of acquiring and representing the expert knowledge and the development, testing and implementation of the prototype are discussed in the context of this case study. The lessons learned in the development of this expert database system are also presented.

The aim of this study was to design a learning environment supported by a problem-based learning method and to obtain students' views on this process. In this context, the Database Management Systems course was taught according to the problem-based learning method. The participants of the study consisted of 25 students from the 2nd-grade students studying in the Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technology in the spring semester of 2015 at Uludag University Faculty of Education. The research design of this study was the case study, which is one of the qualitative research designs. Data were obtained from the students via a semi-structured interview form. Descriptive analysis was applied to the data obtained from the interview. According to the results obtained from the analysis of the data, the students were generally satisfied with the problem-based learning practices. In addition, the students emphasized that it is important to have a sufficient level of necessary knowledge of the implementation of problem-based learning to design the classroom environment.

A modern database transaction may involve a long series of updates, deletions, and insertions of data and a complex mix of these primary database operations. Due to its length and complexity, the transaction requires back-up and recovery procedures. The back-up procedure allows the user to either commit or abort a lengthy and complex transaction without comprising the integrity of the data. The recovery procedure allows the system to maintain the data integrity during the execution of a transaction, should the transaction be interrupted by the system. With both the back-up and recovery procedures, the modern database system will be able to provide consistent data throughout the life-span of a database without ever corrupting either its data values or its data types. However, the implementation of back-up and recovery procedures in a database system is a difficult and involved effort since it effects the base as well as meta data of the database. Further, it effects the state of the database system. This thesis is mainly focused on the design trade-offs and issues of implementing an effective and efficient mechanism for back-up and recovery in the multimodel, multilingual, and multi backend database system. In most of the cases Distributed Databases are developed in a Bottom- Up approach, fragmentation exists beforehand. The optimum allocation of those fragments is the only way, which can be exploited by the designers to increase the performance, efficiency, reliability and availability of the Distributed Database in the realistic dynamic environment, where the access probabilities of nodes to fragments change over time. In this paper, a new dynamic fragment allocation algorithm is proposed in Non-Replicated allocation scenario, which incorporates the time constraints of database accesses, volume threshold and the volume of data transmitted in successive time intervals to dynamically reallocate fragments to sites at runtime in accordance with the changing access patterns. It will migrate a fragment to a particular site only when that site has made data transfer higher than all other sites and greater than the threshold value from or to that fragment consistently in some recent time intervals. The choice of the volume threshold, the number of time intervals and the duration of each time interval are the most important factors which regulate the frequency of fragment reallocations. The proposed algorithm will decrease the movement of fragments over the network and data transfer cost and will also improve the overall performance of the system by dynamically allocating fragments in a most optimum and intuitive manner.
