1DTIC ADA426505: Swarm Based Implementation Of A Virtal Distributed Database System In A Sensor Network
By Defense Technical Information Center
The deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in recent military operations has had success in carrying out surveillance and combat missions in sensitive areas. An area of intense research on UAVs has been on controlling a group of small-sized UAVs to carry out reconnaissance missions normally undertaken by large UAVs such as Predator or Global Hawk. A control strategy for coordinating the UAV movements of such a group of UAVs adopts the bio-inspired swarm model to produce autonomous group behavior. This research proposes establishing a distributed database system on a group of swarming UAVs, providing for data storage during a reconnaissance mission. A distributed database system model is simulated treating each UAV as a distributed database site connected by a wireless network. In this model, each UAV carries a sensor and communicates to a command center when queried. Drawing equivalence to a sensor network, the network of UAVs poses as a dynamic ad-hoc sensor network. The distributed database system based on a swarm of UAVs is tested against a set of reconnaissance test suites with respect to evaluating system performance. The design of experiments focuses on the effects of varying the query input and types of swarming UAVs on overall system performance. The results show that the topology of the UAVs has a distinct impact on the output of the sensor database. The experiments measuring system delays also confirm the expectation that in a distributed system, inter-node communication costs outweigh processing costs.

7Analysis, Design, And Implementation Of A Database Management System For The Naval Postgraduate School Alumni Association.
By Kohlheim, Mark Todd
The Naval Postgraduate School Alumni Association is a professional group consisting of graduates from the Postgraduate School. The Alumni Association is a self supporting entity that is not part of the administrative structure of the school. The Alumni Association supports itself through membership fees paid by graduates who join the association. The administrative work required to run the association is accomplished through a part-time employee and volunteers. Until recently, the Alumni Association was unorganized and lacked a firm plan of action to establish itself with the School's graduates and to increase its membership base. Records of graduates were located in various locations and in different formats which made tracking and contacting alumni an extremely time consuming operation. This thesis develops a database management system for the Naval Postgraduate School Alumni Association. This system provides a standardized format for storing data and tracking alumni. It also performs the time consuming accounting and billing functions associated with the Association's membership management. This thesis provides an outline covering the Alumni Association's system requirements analysis and design methodology. The system was written using dBASE IV, version 1.1.

8Analysis, Design, And Implementation Of A Database Management System For The CINCPACFLT PEB
By Encinias, Tony R.
The Commander in Chief Pacific Fleet Propulsion Examining Board (CINCPACFLT PEB) is a professional group of naval officers experienced in engineering readiness. This group of naval officers conducts examinations to assess the engineering readiness of the Pacific Fleet. There are two classes of examinations conducted by the PEB. The Operational Propulsion Plant Examination (OPPE) assesses the engineering readiness when the ship is underway. The Light Off Examination (LOE) assesses the engineering readiness after a ship's propulsion plant has been secured, for example overhauls, in excess of ninety days. The examination data is then collected in the exam summary worksheet and entered into the database. The current database system uses the dBASE IV Plus database management system (DBMS) software and is constructed as a flat file system. Redundant data, inaccuracies, and inefficiencies are prevalent throughout the current system. The purpose of this thesis is to design a relational database (Propulsion Examining Board Database System (PEBDS)), implement and replace the current system, and provide a user friendly graphical user interface (GUI). The PEBDS and the GUl are constructed using Paradox for Windows Version 4.5 DBMS software.

9DTIC ADA215356: Design And Implementation Of The Nested Relational Data Model Under The Exodus Extensible Database System
By Defense Technical Information Center
The problem addressed in this thesis effort concerns the design and implementation of the nested relational data model. The data model is designed within the Exodus extensible architecture. Although a large amount of theory exists with the model, no vehicle has been available to implement the concepts. The objective of the model is to increase performance of non-traditional databases by modeling real-world objects in the problem domain into nested relations within the software domain of Exodus. Exodus is used to implement several components essential to the data model. First, the concept of nested relations is realized, and then a parser is developed to create and maintain a data dictionary. The Colby relational algebra is used to form the query tree for the query optimizer, and a plan tree permits the code to be generated for the query. Operator methods are developed for the query to be subsequently executed. The nested relational data model was implemented using the Exodus architecture. The nested relational data model was implemented using the Exodus architecture. The query tree was built and the code generated for the architecture's compiler. Operator methods were implemented for the project, select, and natural join operators. Because the data model can be implemented, more non-traditional databases can be developed with efficient components. (KT)

16DTIC ADA313102: Design And Implementation Of A NATOPS Qualification Database Management System For Naval Aviation Safety Officers.
By Defense Technical Information Center
The VFA-125 Safety Office located at NAS Lemoore is burdened with the enormous administrative responsibility of managing the NATOPS qualifications for over 200 pilots and passengers. During this period of military downsizing and operational funding cuts, this responsibility will require the increased attention of a smaller staff with a limited budget. The burden of paper file management could be eased through the introduction of automated record keeping while simultaneously increasing accuracy and efficiency. The potential for non-qualified personnel to fly squadron aircraft could be eliminated. Based on VFA-125 Safety Office requirements, this thesis designs and implements a database management system. The primary objective is to automate the currently utilized manual NATOPS filing system to allow the squadron Safety Officer immediate access to all NATOPS-related pilot qualification data. This system will store, sort and compare data relevant to all squadron pilots while minimizing the time spent verifying the previously-used manual filing system. Additionally, the staff will be able to query reports and generate memoranda with minimal effort. The system is also analyzed to determine possible enhancements in the future. The Aviation Safety Database System is designed using dBASE III Plus and dBASE for Windows 5.0.

17DTIC ADA275014: Design And Implementation Of A Database Management System For A Navy Medical Administrative Unit
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Navy Medical Administrative Unit (NMAU) for the Monterey Peninsula has a challenging mission which encompasses many administrative tasks. Medical readiness and occupational health requirements are tracked for all Navy and Marine Corps personnel in the region. In order to fulfill their mission satisfactorily, it was necessary for NMAU to get an automated database management system. The Flight Surgeon at the Naval Postgraduate School works very closely with NMAU. The Flight Surgeon's administrative responsibilities would also benefit from a database system. Based on the requirements for NMAU a database system was designed and implemented in their clinic. Based on the Flight Surgeon's requirements the data base system was further analyzed in order to assist future upgrades that would employ the flight surgeon's requirements. The primary objective, however, was to get a system on line for NMAU that would enable them to effectively and efficiently execute their mission. The Navy Medical Administrative Unit Database System (NMAUDS 1.0) was the result of the previously described endeavors; it was written in dBASE IV version 1.5.

18DTIC ADA159476: Design, Analysis And Implementation Of The Primary Operation, RETRIEVE-COMMON, Of The Multi-Backend Database System (MBDS).
By Defense Technical Information Center
The multi-backend database system (MBDS) in the Laboratory for Database System Research at the Naval Postgraduate School is designed to overcome the performance-gain and capacity-growth problems of either the traditional database system or the single-backend-software database system. The original MBDS supported four primary operations, namely, RETRIEVE, DELETE, UPDATE AND INSERT. This thesis presents the design and implementation of the fifth primary operation, the RETRIEVE-COMMON operation. The retrieve-common operation is used to merge two files by their common attribute values. First, the overall design and implementation of MBDS is reviewed. Then, several alternatives are compared and analyzed to select the best one as our design and implementation approach. Finally, we describe the detailed design and the implementation. Our goal is to maximize the utilization and minimize the effects to the existing system. For integrating our design into MBDS, several modifications are made. The algorithms for the modifications and their program specifications are also provided in Chapter IV, V and Appendices. (Author)

19DTIC ADA159542: The Design And Implementation Of A Hierarchical Interface For The Multi-Lingual Database System.
By Defense Technical Information Center
Traditionally, the design and implementation of a conventional database system begins with the selection of a data model, followed by the specification of a model-based data language. An alternative to this traditional approach to database system developement is the multi-lingual database system. This alternative approach affords the user the ability to access and manage a large collection of databases via several data models and their corresponding data languages. This thesis presents the specification and implementation of a hierarchical/DL/I language interface for the MLDS. Specificallly, it presents the specification and implementation of an interface which translate DL/I data language calls into attribute-based data language requests. The author describes the software engineerig aspects of the implementation and an overview of the four modules which comprise the DL/I language interface. Additional keywords: KMS (Kernel Mapping System). (Author)

22Database System Design And Implementation For Marine Air-traffic-controller Training
By Ambriz, Anthony J.
This project focused on the design, development, and implementation of a centralized electronic database for air-traffic-controller (ATC) training within the Marine Corps. The Marine Corps currently has individual electronic training database-management systems at the unit level. The existing training database-management systems are client based, unstandardized, and have significant data-entry redundancy. We developed a centralized system that is scalable and capable of supporting detailed training statistics. We identified several critical features required for successful implementation and developed a system capable of importing and processing existing training data. We analyzed an existing training database-management system used at the unit level and developed methods for accurately exporting the existing system's stored generic data. We processed the raw data and properly migrated the data to a prototype database-management system, which involved processing for proper data integrity, database normalization, and enforcing unique record-identifier usage. We developed a front-end graphical user interface to interact with the developed system and the stored training data. Future system improvements include migration to a military network, adaptation by additional units, and full integration with the Navy's Visual Information Display System.

24DTIC ADA165424: Implementation Of A Personnel Database System In Hellenic Armed Forces Formations.
By Defense Technical Information Center
In order to increase the effectiveness of Hellenic Armed Forces, it is essential that personnel management be performed very efficiently. However, to manually manage all Armed Forces personnel is a very tedious, complex and time consuming job. Increased personnel volume has also increased the task of management making the operations more and more complicated. Furthermore, personnel managers and decision makers will need reliable information faster than is currently available. It is almost impossible to get all the information required by the personnel managers in the time frame allowed with a manual system. The authors propose an automated system to perform this function using dBASE II with an IBM personal computer. Source programs and sample reports are included. (Thesis)

25Analysis, Design And Implementation Of A Database Management System For Generating Technical/medical Reports By Chiropractors
By Bolling, Rodney A.
A medical center specializing in chiropractic care is burdened with the enormous task of managing numerous patient's records, preparing error free billing statements, and writing official business/medical. This task requires increased attention of staff personnel. The burden of paper file management could be lessened through automation of record keeping, while increasing accuracy, efficiency, and effectiveness. Valuable time for the providers and secretary could be saved through elimination of excessive paperwork which they are required to prepare. Based on the staff requirements, this thesis designs and implements a database management system. The primary objective is to automate the current manual system to allow providers to generate official medical reports. In addition to, this system will also store, sort, and compare data relevant to all patients while minimizing the need to maintain hard copy files. The Chiro Pro 97 (CP97) Database system is designed using Microsoft Access 97

28DTIC ADA272960: Design And Implementation Of A Prototype PC Based Graphical And Interactive Milsatcom Requirements Database System
By Defense Technical Information Center
This thesis develops a prototype PC based Military Satellite Communications MILSATCOM) Requirements Database (MRDB) application for U.S. Space Command, using Microsoft's Access relational database management system (DBMS) for Windows. It demonstrates the advantages of using the proposed database system over the existing one and shows how U.S. Space Command can save both time and money by using a PC based interactive, graphical, and user friendly database system. A rapid prototyping approach in concert with a six phase database design process was used to develop the prototype. The first two chapters of the thesis provide a background of the application and describe database management systems in general and Microsoft Access in particular. The applications of Access - tables, queries, forms, reports, macros, and modules - to the design of the MRDB are then discussed in the succeeding five chapters. The Conclusions describe the advantages and benefits of using the prototype MRDB database system and make recommendations for future improvements. 29DTIC ADA124647: Analysis Of Information Requirements And Design Of The Consolidated AFIT Database And Information System (CADIS) With An AFIT/CI Implementation Design.
By Defense Technical Information Center
A Consolidated AFIT Database and Information System (CADIS), a centralized relational database in third normal form, was designed for use by the faculty and staff of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). Information requirements were gathered by means of an in-depth data/information analysis at the directorate and division level, and used as the basis of the design. Provided with the design is a highly detailed data dictionary, in four parts, and an estimation of the approximate size of the database itself. Additionally, a system of applications programs were designed for the AFIT Directorate of Civilian Institution Programs (AFIT/CI). This system will allow efficient and easy access to the data on the database by untrained or non-programmer type users. These programs were specifically designed to provide an extremely friendly user interface between CADIS and the AFIT/CI personnel. 30DTIC ADA427716: Design And Implementation Of A Database For An Integrated System For Daily Management In An Industrial And Commercial Organization
By Defense Technical Information Center
The purpose of this research is to define a centralized database containing all necessary information related to daily management in an industrial and commercial organization that is publicly owned and equipped with civil personality and financial autonomy. The system is composed of the following subsystems: Human Resource Management, Provisioning; and Financial, Budgetary, and Accounting Management. The three subsystems should be installed in a central site and at regional sites. Each site will have its own database. The central database will be supplied with the data, which come from the other sites at the end of the day or according to need via modems. It is necessary to develop a tool for remote database queries to accomplish this work. The platform on which the application must be executed is IBM-INFORMIX running on top of the WINDOWS operating system. The database will be a relational database. The framework used in the design and modeling consists of the following: Object Oriented Analysis (OOA), which enables the development of high quality software by defining the problem structure; and the Delphi language, which provides a robust development environment. The installation of the solution will be executed according to the following scenario: Client/Server architecture with the object-oriented development tool DELPHI, the database will be installed on the central and regional servers, the application will be installed on the end users' stations, and data access will be through an open ODBC. This software presents an integrated solution that will provide centralized and accurate data, so that data can be used to derive the right decision at the best time. (7 tables, 15 figures, 14 refs.)

37The Design And Implementation Of Pedagogical Software For Multi-backend/multi-lingual Database System.
By Little, Craig W.
Traditionally, courses in database systems do not use pedagogical software for the purpose of instructing the database systems, despite the progress made in modem database architecture. In this thesis, we present a working document to assist in the instruction of a new database system, the Multi-Backend Database System (MBDS)-and the Multi-Lingual Database System (MLDS). As the course of instruction describes the creation and manipulation of each language, this pedagogical aid will demonstrate, utilizing the live database system, the procedures and methods learned in class.

38Faculty Workload Database System (FWDS) For The Administrative Sciences Department : Analysis, Design, And Implementation.
By Zellmann, Robert A.
The Administrative Sciences (AS) Department of the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) has a very large database containing information regarding faculty activity in the areas of course instruction; thesis development, ongoing research, and academic service. Management of this information was disjointed and required considerable time and energy, and could be more efficiently handled with a software application. Subsequently, the choice was made to develop a database application that effectively manages these facets of the AS Department faculty workload. This thesis develops and implements the Faculty Workload Database System (FWDS) to support the AS Department. This thesis provides an in-depth discussion of the entire software application analysis, design and implementation process. The system was produced using dBASE IV, version 1.1 and will transition to operational status during FY 93.

41DTIC ADA289656: Analysis, Design And Implementation Of A Database System For The Systems Management Curriculum Office.
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Systems Management Curricular Office at the Naval Postgraduate School is burdened with the enormous administrative task of managing files for over 500 students. In a time of drastic military downsizing and funding cuts, this task will require more work of a smaller staff with less money. The burden of paper management could be lessened through automation of record keeping, while increasing efficiency and effectiveness. Valuable time for the students could be saved through elimination of excessive paperwork which they were required to prepare. Based on requirements from the Systems Management Curricular Office, this thesis designs and implements a database management system. The primary objective is to allow the incoming class of students to enroll using this system instead of traditional paper forms, enabling the staff to focus on more non-administrative tasks. This system will store, sort and compare data relevant to all students while minimizing the need to maintain hardcopy files. Additionally, the staff will be able to query reports and generate letters with minimal effort. The system is also analyzed to determine possible enhancements that could be added in the future. The Systems Management Database Systems (SMDS) is designed using Borland's PARADOX version 4.0. (AN)

By Defense Technical Information Center
Database machines and parallel database systems are becoming a viable alternative for handling transactions on voluminous databases especially with the declining cost of hardware. Database research has spawned a variety of parallel processing architectures to improve the performance of database machines. However, many of these architectures are based upon unique hardware configurations and technologies including processor-per-track, processor-per- head, and off-the-disk designs. Alternative backend database system which will be utilized for processing transactions on voluminous databases. The complete performance analysis and design of RRDS is currently being carried out by a Ph. D. student at the University of Central Florida. RRDS supports the relational data model and consists of multiple processors running replicated copies of the database management system (DBMS) software on a partitioned database. The general hardware organization is composed of a controller and a collection of replicated computers which can be implemented as microcomputers or minicomputers. Keywords: *Host simulator programs.

44Design And Implementation Of A Personal Database Management System.
By Jones, Peter L.
45Design And Implementation Of A Prototype Microcomputer Database Management System For The Standardization Of Data Elements For The Department Of Defense
By Bacheller, John S.
The need for data management standardization has been clearly identified by the Office of the Secretary of Defense as a means to realize savings in the 9 billion dollars spent annually on information technology in DOD and to further the sharing of information. This thesis discusses the importance of data requirements, functional requirements, logical database design and application design for a prototype microcomputer dictionary system for standardizing, storing, updating and viewing data elements, the lowest level in the hierarchy of metadata. This prototype dictionary is then implemented in a powerful relational database management system, Paradox 3.0. This system will help developers within DOD to build, store, track and use standard data elements.

47DTIC ADA280131: The Design And Implementation Of The Functional/Daplex Data Interface For The Multimodel And Multilingual Database System
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Multi-Lingual and Multi-Model Database System (MDBS), at the Naval Postgraduate School, is the only database system in which five different database model interfaces operate on a single computer system. The purpose of the MDBS is to prove that multiple database models can coexist and share data within a single computer system. The MDBS provides a platform in which diverse database models can share data, via access to other models' base data, stored in the MDBS common format. The problem was that a Functional database model had not previously been implemented on the MDBS. The goal of this thesis was to provide a Functional/DAPLEX interface for the MDBS. The approach was to design and implement a set of programs to encapsulate the Functional/DAPLEX language as introduced by D.W Shipman in 1981. It is imperative that the interface maintain the look, feel and characteristics of the Functional data model. The result is a set of programs, written in C, which implement a Functional/DAPLEX interface, thus a sixth interface, for the MDBS. The programs parse DAPLEX data definition language and data manipulation language constructs, convert them to an MDBS common format, store the data with other models' base data and can reconvert MDBS common data back to a Functional form

48DTIC ADA243743: An Object-Oriented Database Implementation Of The Magic VLSI Layout Design System
By Defense Technical Information Center
This thesis attempts to prove that the commercially available Object Store data management system provide the performance and functionality necessary to support a complex engineering design system. This is accomplished by modifying the Magic VLSI circuit layout design system to eliminate its current Unix file data management system and replace it with Object Store. The approach to this research effort includes a design recovery of the Magic system and identification of its ket data management functions. These functions are then modified to take advantage of the database management facilities of Object Store. Additional code is added to instrument performance measurement of both the original and the Object Store versions of the Magic system. Testing is accomplished using existing Magic commands to test key database performance criteria. The Object Store version of Magic performed better than the original version for some performance criteria and significantly slower than the original version for other criteria. the conversion effort was difficult and time consuming due to the complexity of the original Magic software and the Object Store database management system. A more specific implementation of Object Store capabilities for conclusive results.
