1NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19870007223: Database Interfaces On NASA's Heterogeneous Distributed Database System
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The purpose of Distributed Access View Integrated Database (DAVID) interface module (Module 9: Resident Primitive Processing Package) is to provide data transfer between local DAVID systems and resident Data Base Management Systems (DBMSs). The result of current research is summarized. A detailed description of the interface module is provided. Several Pascal templates were constructed. The Resident Processor program was also developed. Even though it is designed for the Pascal templates, it can be modified for templates in other languages, such as C, without much difficulty. The Resident Processor itself can be written in any programming language. Since Module 5 routines are not ready yet, there is no way to test the interface module. However, simulation shows that the data base access programs produced by the Resident Processor do work according to the specifications.

4Implementation Of A Distributed Object-oriented Database Management System
By Wyrick, Lynn A.
Distributed database management systems provide for more flexible and efficient processing. Research in object-oriented database management systems is revealing an abundance of additional benefits that cannot be provided by more traditional database management systems. The Naval Military Personnel Command (NMPC) is used as a case study to evaluate the requirements of transitioning from a centralized to a distributed database management system. Features and characteristics of both distributed and object-oriented database management systems are used to determine the appropriate configuration for different application environments. The distributed and object-oriented concepts are evaluated in detail in order to allow an organization to appropriately select the type of system to meet their needs. Transition requirements for NMPC, in particular, are identified and a suggested plan of action is presented. Keywords: Theses, Database implementation, Database design, Distributed architecture, KBSA(Knowledge Base Software Assistant). (kr)

7The Dolphin Didactic Database System (DODDS).
By Dodds, Michael Lyn
The Naval Command, Control and Ocean Surveillance Center (NCCOSC) research, Development, Test and Evaluation Division (NRaD) Marine Mammal Research Programs are conducted by the Marine Mammal Research & Development Branch (D351). Progeny is a project, under D331, that trains Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus). Progeny was designed to explore the standardization of training, husbandry, and record keeping techniques that contribute to preparing, operating, and maintaining dolphins for Fleet systems. Presently, hand written forms are filled out to record data as trainers conduct their training exercises. These forms become the source for creating reports. The current data collection process is tedious, time-consuming, and potentially unmanageable for the staff. This thesis project provides a means to organize, gather, and maintain all the historical, current, and future data for the Progeny project. Capabilities are needed to gather the data so that timely, meaningful information, such as reports and graphs, can be made accessible to the staff. The deliverables from this study are the development of a relational database system for organizing and storing Progeny's data, and the development of an application for entering and accessing the data within the relational database. Output reports and graphs provide information from the data

8The Development Of A Design Database For The Computer Aided Prototyping System
By Dwyer, Andrew Patrick and Lewis, Garry Wayne
The Computer Aided Prototyping System (CAPS) was created to rapidly prototype real-time systems to determine early in the development cycle whether system requirements can be met . The CAPS consists of several software tools that automatically generate an executable Ada model of the proposed system. This thesis describes the development of a design database (DDB) for the CAPS. The DDB is an engineering database that contains all information related to a prototype software design. The DDB enhances the CAPS environment and the prototyping paradigm by providing to the designer the functions of storage, retrieval, viewing, and versioning of prototype components. Garry Lewis is the primary author of chapters I and II and Drew Dwyer the primary author of chapters in and IV. In the joint implementation, Lewis focused on the design database schema and C++/ONTOS issues. Dwyer was responsible for building the command line interface, the hierarchical k-ary data structures and the C++ classes/methods for traversing this structure. Items not covered in the above description were mutually developed.

14A Dedicated Database System For Handling Multi-level Data In Systems Biology.
By Pornputtapong, Natapol, Wanichthanarak, Kwanjeera, Nilsson, Avlant, Nookaew, Intawat and Nielsen, Jens
This article is from Source Code for Biology and Medicine , volume 9 . Abstract Background: Advances in high-throughput technologies have enabled extensive generation of multi-level omics data. These data are crucial for systems biology research, though they are complex, heterogeneous, highly dynamic, incomplete and distributed among public databases. This leads to difficulties in data accessibility and often results in errors when data are merged and integrated from varied resources. Therefore, integration and management of systems biological data remain very challenging. Methods: To overcome this, we designed and developed a dedicated database system that can serve and solve the vital issues in data management and hereby facilitate data integration, modeling and analysis in systems biology within a sole database. In addition, a yeast data repository was implemented as an integrated database environment which is operated by the database system. Two applications were implemented to demonstrate extensibility and utilization of the system. Both illustrate how the user can access the database via the web query function and implemented scripts. These scripts are specific for two sample cases: 1) Detecting the pheromone pathway in protein interaction networks; and 2) Finding metabolic reactions regulated by Snf1 kinase. Results and conclusion: In this study we present the design of database system which offers an extensible environment to efficiently capture the majority of biological entities and relations encountered in systems biology. Critical functions and control processes were designed and implemented to ensure consistent, efficient, secure and reliable transactions. The two sample cases on the yeast integrated data clearly demonstrate the value of a sole database environment for systems biology research.

16The YEASTRACT Database: An Upgraded Information System For The Analysis Of Gene And Genomic Transcription Regulation In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae.
By Teixeira, Miguel Cacho, Monteiro, Pedro Tiago, Guerreiro, Joana Fernandes, Goncalves, Joana Pinho, Mira, Nuno Pereira, dos Santos, Sandra Costa, Cabrito, Tania Rodrigues, Palma, Margarida, Costa, Catarina, Francisco, Alexandre Paulo, Madeira, Sara Cordeiro, Oliveira, Arlindo Limede, Freitas, Ana Teresa and Sa-Correia, Isabel
This article is from Nucleic Acids Research , volume 42 . Abstract The YEASTRACT (http://www.yeastract.com) information system is a tool for the analysis and prediction of transcription regulatory associations in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Last updated in June 2013, this database contains over 200 000 regulatory associations between transcription factors (TFs) and target genes, including 326 DNA binding sites for 113 TFs. All regulatory associations stored in YEASTRACT were revisited and new information was added on the experimental conditions in which those associations take place and on whether the TF is acting on its target genes as activator or repressor. Based on this information, new queries were developed allowing the selection of specific environmental conditions, experimental evidence or positive/negative regulatory effect. This release further offers tools to rank the TFs controlling a gene or genome-wide response by their relative importance, based on (i) the percentage of target genes in the data set; (ii) the enrichment of the TF regulon in the data set when compared with the genome; or (iii) the score computed using the TFRank system, which selects and prioritizes the relevant TFs by walking through the yeast regulatory network. We expect that with the new data and services made available, the system will continue to be instrumental for yeast biologists and systems biology researchers.

17Choosing A Database System For HANKAM Department.
By Sudiyanto

24A Caption-based Natural-language Interface Handling Descriptive Captions For A Multimedia Database System
By Dulle, John David
This research examined the grammar structure of descriptive English captions on multimedia data. The research was composed of three phases. The first phase was to investigate the grammar structure of example descriptive captions from a variety of subject domains. The second phase was to develop a set of domain independent binary grammar rules to be used in the Caption-Based Interface (CBI) which is a natural language interface for the Multimedia Database System. The third phase of the research was to implement and test the grammar rules in the CBI. The program was implemented in C-prolog on a Sun SPARC workstation. The testing phase also includes timing and memory comparisons between C-Prolog an interpretive programming language and a compiled version of the code using Quintus Prolog. This thesis was able to show that the grammar rules that were developed could correctly identify their intended structures. Another accomplishment of this thesis was to demonstrate that the CBI could parse 25 out of 30 example captions and that it could correctly handle some semantic interpretations of the parsed captions.

25Implementation Of The Primary Operation, Retrieve-common, Of The Multi-backend Database System (MBDS).
By Hunt, Andrew L.
The multi-backend database system(MBDS) is a research effort conducted jointly by the Naval Postgraduate School and Ohio State University with the sponsorship of the STARS foundation. The MBDS is designed to overcome the capacity growth and performance gain problems of the traditional database systems and the single-backend database systems. The original MBDS supported four primary operations - INSERT. RETRIEVE. DELETE, and UPDATE. This thesis presents the implementation of a fifth primary operation. RETRIEVE-COMMON. This operation is used to merge the records of two files which satisfy a particular query and share a common value for given attributes. The preliminary design is discussed in the Naval Postgraduate Thesis \"Design, Analysis and Implementation of the Primary Operation. Retrieve-Common, of the Multi-Backend Database System (MBDS)\" by Hsiang-Lung Tung.

27Analysis, Design, And Implementation Of A Database Management System For The Naval Postgraduate School Alumni Association.
By Kohlheim, Mark Todd
The Naval Postgraduate School Alumni Association is a professional group consisting of graduates from the Postgraduate School. The Alumni Association is a self supporting entity that is not part of the administrative structure of the school. The Alumni Association supports itself through membership fees paid by graduates who join the association. The administrative work required to run the association is accomplished through a part-time employee and volunteers. Until recently, the Alumni Association was unorganized and lacked a firm plan of action to establish itself with the School's graduates and to increase its membership base. Records of graduates were located in various locations and in different formats which made tracking and contacting alumni an extremely time consuming operation. This thesis develops a database management system for the Naval Postgraduate School Alumni Association. This system provides a standardized format for storing data and tracking alumni. It also performs the time consuming accounting and billing functions associated with the Association's membership management. This thesis provides an outline covering the Alumni Association's system requirements analysis and design methodology. The system was written using dBASE IV, version 1.1.

28Analysis, Design, And Implementation Of A Database Management System For The CINCPACFLT PEB
By Encinias, Tony R.
The Commander in Chief Pacific Fleet Propulsion Examining Board (CINCPACFLT PEB) is a professional group of naval officers experienced in engineering readiness. This group of naval officers conducts examinations to assess the engineering readiness of the Pacific Fleet. There are two classes of examinations conducted by the PEB. The Operational Propulsion Plant Examination (OPPE) assesses the engineering readiness when the ship is underway. The Light Off Examination (LOE) assesses the engineering readiness after a ship's propulsion plant has been secured, for example overhauls, in excess of ninety days. The examination data is then collected in the exam summary worksheet and entered into the database. The current database system uses the dBASE IV Plus database management system (DBMS) software and is constructed as a flat file system. Redundant data, inaccuracies, and inefficiencies are prevalent throughout the current system. The purpose of this thesis is to design a relational database (Propulsion Examining Board Database System (PEBDS)), implement and replace the current system, and provide a user friendly graphical user interface (GUI). The PEBDS and the GUl are constructed using Paradox for Windows Version 4.5 DBMS software.

32NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20020044547: High-Resolution Spectroscopic Database For The NASA Earth Observing System Program
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The purpose of this project is to develop and enhance the HITRAN molecular spectroscopic database and associated software to support the observational programs of the Earth Observing System (EOS). In particular, the focus is on the EOS projects: the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), the High-Resolution Dynamics Limb Sounder (HIRDLS), Measurements of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT), the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES), and the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE III). The data requirements of these programs in terms of spectroscopy are varied, but usually call for additional spectral parameters or improvements to existing molecular bands. In addition, cross-section data for heavier molecular species must be expanded and made amenable to modeling in remote sensing. The effort in the project also includes developing software and distribution to make access, manipulation, and use of HITRAN functional to the EOS program.

35Interactive Microcomputer Control System Modeling And Realization Using A Database For Automatic Programming
By Johnsrud, Roger Francis
A program for control system modeling, simulation and realization useable by the novice programmer was developed for interactive use on a microcomputer. The program uses two software packages; PL/1-80 from Digital Research and DBASE II from Ashton Tate. The paper covers a complete example for modeling and simulation of a minimum time response ripple free controller for a 1/S(2) plant. The program uses two sample rates, one for modeling the computer and the other for modeling the plant. Variable delays due to computer computation are included and corrected semi-transparent to the control designer. .This thesis covers two different fields of interest, one for the experienced control system designer yet a novice programmer, and the other for the novice control designer yet an experienced computer programmer. Key programming concepts include using a business database to automatically program a control problem requiring a scientific language.

36NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19900008603: Materials Properties Numerical Database System Established And Operational At CINDAS/Purdue University
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
A computerized comprehensive numerical database system on the mechanical, thermophysical, electronic, electrical, magnetic, optical, and other properties of various types of technologically important materials such as metals, alloys, composites, dielectrics, polymers, and ceramics has been established and operational at the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) of Purdue University. This is an on-line, interactive, menu-driven, user-friendly database system. Users can easily search, retrieve, and manipulate the data from the database system without learning special query language, special commands, standardized names of materials, properties, variables, etc. It enables both the direct mode of search/retrieval of data for specified materials, properties, independent variables, etc., and the inverted mode of search/retrieval of candidate materials that meet a set of specified requirements (which is the computer-aided materials selection). It enables also tabular and graphical displays and on-line data manipulations such as units conversion, variables transformation, statistical analysis, etc., of the retrieved data. The development, content, accessibility, etc., of the database system are presented and discussed.

41Safety Profile Of Anti-calcitonin Gene Related Peptide Monoclonal Antibodies: Protocol Of A Disproportionality Analysis Using The FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) Database
By Valentina Giunchi, Michele Fusaroli, Giulia Hyeraci and Ippazio Cosimo Antonazzo
Three anti-calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), namely erenumab, galcanezumab and fremanezumab, were approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2018 and by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in 2019 as a treatment for the prevention of both episodic and chronic migraine. Recently, a novel anti-CGRP mAb, called eptinezumab was approved in 2020 by the FDA and in 2022 by the EMA. These drugs act by binding to CGRP, or its receptor, which plays a key role in arteriolar vasodilation and nociceptor sensitisation underlying migraine disease. Anti-CGRP mAbs have a long plasma half-life that allows for only monthly, or even quarterly, administration. Except from eptinezumab that is given by intravenous infusion, anti-CGRP mAbs are administered subcutaneously, which enables self-administration by the patient. In pre-registration trials, the most common adverse events reported with the use of anti-CGRP mAbs were: injection-site and hypersensitivity reactions, infections (e.g., nasopharyngitis, upper respiratory tract infection, sinusitis), gastrointestinal (e.g., nausea, constipation) and cardiovascular disorders (e.g., hypertension). Nevertheless, it must be taken into consideration that vulnerable subjects, such as the elderly, were not enrolled in clinical trials. Additionally, follow-up of pre-registration trials was limited to a maximum of 6 months, not sufficient to exclude long-term effects of CGRP blockade. In this context, post-marketing studies represent a fundamental source of information to address knowledge gaps about anti-CGRP mAbs safety. To date, few pharmacoepidemiological studies investigating the safety profile of this novel class of drugs have been performed using ad hoc data collection or electronic health care records database. Generally, the adverse events reported were mild to moderate. However, it should be noted that these studies included small samples and had short follow-up (12 months). Therefore, it is possible to suppose that these studies were more prone to not detect rare and long-term adverse events. Recently, some pharmacovigilance studies on anti-CGRP mAbs were published using the safety reports of suspected adverse drug reactions retrieved from the World Health Organization (WHO) pharmacovigilance database (VigiBase) and FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS). Findings from the aforementioned studies suggested that during the first 2 years of post-marketing surveillance, anti-CGRP adverse events reported were mostly non-serious and with a favourable prognosis. Additionally, these studies did not detect any safety signal when these drugs are used in pregnant women. It must be noted that no pharmacovigilance or pharmacoepidemiological safety studies on eptinezumab have been conducted to date as it was only recently marketed. Moreover, to our knowledge, no pharmacovigilance studies were published encompassing the 4 anti-CGRPs currently available on the market. Therefore, we designed a pharmacovigilance study on spontaneous reports from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System to investigate the adverse events potentially associated with the use of the four anti-CGRP mAbs in the real-world setting.

43Detail Design And Analysis Of An Access Control System For A Multi-backend Database System.
By Ekici, Ali
This thesis describes the design and analysis of an access control mechanism for a multi-backend database system (MDBS). MDBS utilizes a minicomputer as the controller and a number of minicomputers and their disk systems as the backends. The database is distributed over the dedicated disk systems of the backends. The operations on the database are performed by the backends in parallel. Thus, the performance gain of the system is dependent on the number of backends in the system. Each backend performs its own access control operations using duplicated access control information.

The operations on the database are performed by the backends in parallel. Thus, the performance gain of the system is dependent on the number of backends in the system. Each backend performs its own access control operations using duplicated access control information.

50NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20050166975: Unified Planetary Coordinates System: A Searchable Database Of Geodetic Information
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Over the past 40 years, an enormous quantity of orbital remote sensing data has been collected for Mars from many missions and instruments. Unfortunately these datasets currently exist in a wide range of disparate coordinate systems, making it extremely difficult for the scientific community to easily correlate, combine, and compare data from different Mars missions and instruments. As part of our work for the PDS Imaging Node and on behalf of the USGS Astrogeology Team, we are working to solve this problem and to provide the NASA scientific research community with easy access to Mars orbital data in a unified, consistent coordinate system along with a wide variety of other key geometric variables. The Unified Planetary Coordinates (UPC) system is comprised of two main elements: (1) a database containing Mars orbital remote sensing data computed using a uniform coordinate system, and (2) a process by which continual maintainance and updates to the contents of the database are performed.
