We present a complex data handling system for the COMPASS tokamak, operated by IPP ASCR Prague, Czech Republic [1]. The system, called CDB (Compass DataBase), integrates different data sources as an assortment of data acquisition hardware and software from different vendors is used. Based on widely available open source technologies wherever possible, CDB is vendor and platform independent and it can be easily scaled and distributed. The data is directly stored and retrieved using a standard NAS (Network Attached Storage), hence independent of the particular technology; the description of the data (the metadata) is recorded in a relational database. Database structure is general and enables the inclusion of multi-dimensional data signals in multiple revisions (no data is overwritten). This design is inherently distributed as the work is off-loaded to the clients. Both NAS and database can be implemented and optimized for fast local access as well as secure remote access. CDB is implemented in Python language; bindings for Java, C/C++, IDL and Matlab are provided. Independent data acquisitions systems as well as nodes managed by FireSignal [2] are all integrated using CDB. An automated data post-processing server is a part of CDB. Based on dependency rules, the server executes, in parallel if possible, prescribed post-processing tasks.

The main objective of this research was to explore and refine methods for detailed phonetic labeling (English or Russian) and character level labeling (Mandarin). Much of the work involved new front end signal processing methods designed to improve acoustic phonetic representations for speech. This resulted in recognition rates for TIMIT (English) of 74%, among the highest reported in the literature. A complete character recognition system for Mandarin was developed and tested. Character recognition rates as high as 88% were obtained, using an approximately 40 training databases. For the case of Russian, a system for automatically converting Russian to morphemes, a kind of base syllable, was created and tested. A suite of tools for front end processing, automatic forced alignment, and a complete automatic recognition system are described.

This Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering Technical Note (CHETN) describes coupling of the Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP) database to WaveNet, the first module of MetOcnDat (Meteorological and Oceanographic Data or Metocean data) management and analysis system. This Part 3 in the WaveNet technical note series is a user s guide that provides a step-by-step procedure to access, process, and analyze wave and wind data from the CDIP database.

The Marine Air Command and Control System execution of Direct Air Support is based on the concept of centralized command and decentralized control. It is completed manually using standardized procedures and controls to ensure responsiveness in highly dynamic situations. This thesis investigates the issues in developing and implementing an automated database application for receiving, processing, disseminating, and recording information as it pertains to the Air Tasking Order within the Direct Air Support Center. A relational database design is proposed using Entity-Relationship modeling. A simple prototype of the system is implemented in dBASE IV to demonstrate proof of concept. The major benefit of the database approach is that databases are dynamic and can evolve with changing needs.

A means of identifying these contaminants has been developed through this contracting effort. The delivered system provides a listing of the materials and/or chemicals associated with each facility, information as to the contaminant's physical state, a list of the quantity and/or volume of each suspected contaminant, a database of the toxicological hazards associated with each contaminant, a recommended means of rapid identification of the contaminants under operational conditions, a method of identifying possible failure modes and effects analysis associated with each facility, and a fault tree-type analysis that will provide a means of identifying potential hazardous conditions related to future planned missions.

We show that database schema validation and update processing problems such as view updating, materialized view maintenance, integrity constraint checking, integrity constraint maintenance or condition monitoring can be classified as problems of either abductive or deductive nature, according to the reasoning paradigm that inherently suites them. This is done by performing abductive and deductive reasoning on the event rules [Oli91], a set of rules that define the difference between consecutive database states In this way, we show that it is possible to provide methods able to deal with all these problems as a whole. We also show how some existing general deductive and abductive procedures may be used to reason on the event rules. In this way, we show that these procedures can deal with all database schema validation and update processing problems considered in this paper.

One challenge of tactical information processing within the demanding net-centric environment is the fusion of data extracted from various free-form message databases. The development of high-level data fusion products addresses this challenge; however, development relies heavily on the availability of large, accurate data sets. This report documents the Database Creation for Information Processing Methods, Metrics, and Models (DCIPM3) project that creates, from a U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL)-designated context, a notional albeit realistic detailed scenario encompassing a multitude of social interactions. A time ordered event list (TOEL) was created from the scenario that includes references to multiple forms of communication, events, and interactions between subjects. An extensive message set that includes communication between subjects was derived from the TOEL. The Web Ontology Language (OWL) was used to create an ontology populated with information, e.g., 'meet at two,' from the message set. Resource Description Framework (RDF) triples were extracted from this ontology. The resulting database from the extracted triples can be used by the information fusion community when both a known social context and a comprehensive database of messages to support that context are required.

This Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering Technical Note (CHETN) describes the second module of the MetOcnDat (Meteorological and Oceanographic or Metocean) system, called TideNet. The MetOcnDat modular system in development consists of toolboxes for waves, tides, and river flow databases that will facilitate conversion of data used in input files for numerical models and provide tabular and graphical information for project planning and design reports. TideNet is a web-based Graphical-User-Interface (GUI) data management tool that allows users to access, process, and analyze tide data available from different tidal databases. This first application of TideNet deals only with tide data from the National Weather Service (NWS) database used in various coastal, ocean, and marine engineering applications. Metocean data include winds, waves, tides (water levels and currents), and river discharges. The first two Technical Notes (TNs) in the MetOcnDat system series (Demirbilek et al. 2013; Wilson et al. 2012) described the application of WaveNet, a companion module of TideNet, for the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) buoy and Wave Information Stduy (WIS) databases. The TideNet is a web-based GUI that provides users with GIS mapping tools to query tide data sources in a desired geographic region of USA and its territories. Users can select a tide data source through the Google Map interface to view data and parameters of interest. The utilities of TideNet available at the selected tide data source can query the data source, then plot, analyze, and extract tidal information based on a user-specified time window and output data in different formats for engineering applications. TideNet has additional post-processing capabilities to produce tables and figures and prepare input files for numerical models.

Swift rates of scientific-technical evolution demand modern technologies of information storing and processing for diverse resources management, for example in science and education domain. For solving of this task the ontological approach was used and “Ontology-based Portal for Management and Evaluation of scientific and Educational Resources of Ukraine” was created to reveal implicit domain knowledge, detect conflicts and control the correspondence of the HEI`s activity to the legislative base of Ukraine and society needs

Narrative data processing and database updating are examined from the viewpoint of interaction with other processes in an automated data fusion system. Methods are outlined for using production rules (if-then rules) in the processing of the narrative data and for integrating such a process with other rule-based data-fusion processes. Database updating methods which employ a 'history file' are processed. An experimental rule-based program compares event reports for redundancies, combines reports of the same event and retires old data into a history file in a form useful for event reconstruction and evaluation. A number of related areas of investigation are suggested for future research. (Author)

Replicated architecture has been proposed as a way to obtain acceptable performance in a multilevel secure database system. This architecture contains a separate database for each security level such that each contains replicated data from lower security classes. The consistency of the values of replicated data items must be maintained without unnecessarily interfering with concurrency of database operations. This paper provides a protocol to do this that is secure, since it is free of covert channels, and also ensures one-copy serializability of executing transactions. The protocol can be implemented with untrusted processes for both concurrency and recovery.

We demonstrate the newly developed resource for exoplanet researchers - The Exoplanet Transit Database. This database is designed to be a web application and it is open for any exoplanet observer. It came on-line in September 2008. The ETD consists of three individual sections. One serves for predictions of the transits, the second one for processing and uploading new data from the observers. We use a simple analytical model of the transit to calculate the central time of transit, its duration and the depth of the transit. These values are then plotted into the observed - computed diagrams (O-C), that represent the last part of the application.

This report describes the design and implementation of a prototype database system that was created to help the Engineering Directorate manage its Individual Development Plan (IDP) information. The database system was designed to meet the customers current needs and to be easily modifiable in the event that new needs are identified. The database uses a relational data model and the database manager includes operations for data retrieval and data management. Since mid October 1994, the database system has been used to process the directorates' FY95 IDP information.

This paper outlines a general philosophy and framework for the specification of a data model. Extracts from scenarios that have been developed for specification of several well-known data models (e.g., DBTG, relational, TDMS) are given and discussed. These extracts are preliminary and incomplete, but they are used to illustrate the feasibility of the Data Model Processor Approach. The scenarios are intended for implementation of an augmented positional processor that will be able to support different data models and, through transformation, serve in defining and testing new DBMS standards. The innovative research objectives of this task have been directed toward applying waveform modeling techniques to earthquakes and explosions at locations of interest to the community where both teleseismic and regional waveform data are available. Moderate to large earthquake sources provide high resolution ground truth information for regional studies of earthquake and explosion phenomenology. Some of our major efforts included the New England Damage Experiment where the question of shear wave generation mechanisms for explosive sources was addressed. Another major effort included the determination of attenuation parameters in La Paz, Bolivia for improved seismic phase identification.

The objectives of the User's Manual for the Inter-Service/Agency Automated Message Processing Exchange (I-S/A AMPE) Data Base Update is to provide the user's non-ADP personnel with the information necessary to use the system effectively. I-S/A AMPE will be the departments of Defense's (DoD's) replacement for the Service Agency Automated Message Processing Exchanges (AMPEs) and the Automatic Digital Network (AUTODIN) switching centers. The software allows for data retrieval and update of the data base. The project sponsor and user is the Defense Communications Engineering Center (DCEC) and the operating center that will run the completed computer programs is the DCEC computer facility. The following is a list of applicable documents.

This report gives a detailed summary of research work completed under Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) grant 53925, over the time period (April 12, 2010 April 10, 2012). There are two main aspects of the work completed. First was the collection and annotation of a large open source data base of speech passages from web sites such as You Tube. 300 passages were collected in each of three languages English, Mandarin, and Russian. Approximately 30 hours of speech were collected for each language. Each passage has been carefully transcribed at the phrasal level by human listeners. Each passage was originally transcribed and then checked and the transcription edited as needed by at least two additional native language listeners. The English and Mandarin were then forced aligned and labeled at the phonetic level using a combination of manual and automatic methods. The Russian passages have not yet been marked at the phonetic level. Another phase of the work was to explore several algorithmic methods for improving automatic speech recognition (ASR) for this intelligible but challenging data base. Note that the body of the report has four main sections plus appendices which introduce, describe, and summarize a portion of the work.

The Computerized Comprehensibility System (CCS) provides an automated copy editing function, generating a mark-up of a draft of a technical document by simulating the simpler comprehension processes of a human reader, and then criticizing the text when these simple processes cannot successfully comprehend the material. A key CCS function is criticizing the coherence of the material by tracking which objects are mentioned in the passage. A common comprehensibility problem is that the text mentions a new object using the syntactic structures appropriate for an already known object. If the reader must make an inference that presence of the new object is implied by the earlier mentioned object, the result is a potential break in the coherence of the text. CCS criticizes all such coherence breaks. However, many such inferences are actually easy for most readers, since only general knowledge is required to make the inference, rather than specialized knowledge about the domain. If so, then the CCS criticism of a coherence break is a false alarm. This report describes exploratory work with an augmented form of CCS, in which the WordNet database is used as a source of general knowledge to allow CCS to make the same kind of general knowledge inferences that human readers do to overcome coherence breaks. Volume holographic memories combine high storage capacity, massive transfer rates, and the ability to associatively search the entire data set in a highly parallel way. Database applications can benefit greatly from these characteristics. The goal of this research was to evaluate the capability, of volume holographic storage to perform associative recall on binary data of an actual database and, thus, operate successfully in a database management environment. An angularly multiplexed volume holographic database system (VHDS) was developed and used for storing and searching alphanumeric database records and image data. VHDS operates in three modes: a) the recording mode, b) the addressed-based retrieval mode, and c) the content-based retrieval mode. In the latter mode, the LiNbO3 crystal is illuminated by a search pattern and a reference beam profile is reconstructed with peaks pointing to the addresses of pages that contain the search pattern. These pages can be retrieved later with the system operating in the addressed-based retrieval mode. VHDS has operated in all three modes. Several hundreds of pages of binary data have been recorded and good associative recall with search arguments as small as 1/30th of a page has been demonstrated. A first order analysis of the factors that affect the quality of the reconstructed reference beam profile has been completed. Both digital and analog data can be combined in the same recording and searching is possible with either data type. This functionality can be very useful in multimedia database management systems and a whole array of applications that use different types of data.
