The Naval Postgraduate School Alumni Association is a professional group consisting of graduates from the Postgraduate School. The Alumni Association is a self supporting entity that is not part of the administrative structure of the school. The Alumni Association supports itself through membership fees paid by graduates who join the association. The administrative work required to run the association is accomplished through a part-time employee and volunteers. Until recently, the Alumni Association was unorganized and lacked a firm plan of action to establish itself with the School's graduates and to increase its membership base. Records of graduates were located in various locations and in different formats which made tracking and contacting alumni an extremely time consuming operation. This thesis develops a database management system for the Naval Postgraduate School Alumni Association. This system provides a standardized format for storing data and tracking alumni. It also performs the time consuming accounting and billing functions associated with the Association's membership management. This thesis provides an outline covering the Alumni Association's system requirements analysis and design methodology. The system was written using dBASE IV, version 1.1.

The Commander in Chief Pacific Fleet Propulsion Examining Board (CINCPACFLT PEB) is a professional group of naval officers experienced in engineering readiness. This group of naval officers conducts examinations to assess the engineering readiness of the Pacific Fleet. There are two classes of examinations conducted by the PEB. The Operational Propulsion Plant Examination (OPPE) assesses the engineering readiness when the ship is underway. The Light Off Examination (LOE) assesses the engineering readiness after a ship's propulsion plant has been secured, for example overhauls, in excess of ninety days. The examination data is then collected in the exam summary worksheet and entered into the database. The current database system uses the dBASE IV Plus database management system (DBMS) software and is constructed as a flat file system. Redundant data, inaccuracies, and inefficiencies are prevalent throughout the current system. The purpose of this thesis is to design a relational database (Propulsion Examining Board Database System (PEBDS)), implement and replace the current system, and provide a user friendly graphical user interface (GUI). The PEBDS and the GUl are constructed using Paradox for Windows Version 4.5 DBMS software.

The burden of paper file management could be lessened through automation of record keeping, while increasing accuracy, efficiency, and effectiveness. Valuable time for the providers and secretary could be saved through elimination of excessive paperwork which they are required to prepare. Based on the staff requirements, this thesis designs and implements a database management system. The primary objective is to automate the current manual system to allow providers to generate official medical reports. In addition to, this system will also store, sort, and compare data relevant to all patients while minimizing the need to maintain hard copy files. The goal of this thesis was to study the feasibility of using an object-oriented database management system to provide the functionality and performance needed to support a complex computer-aided design tool. We do this by modifying OSMagic, a prototype system of the Magic very large scale integrated (VLSI) circuit design tool implemented on the ObjectStore object- oriented database management system. OSMagic was changed to support three different interfaces to ObjectStore and to work in a networking environment. We then designed and examined the use of version and transaction management models as a means of addressing the weaknesses of the prototype as well as a means of introducing new multi-user capabilities. Throughout the effort errors discovered in data definition and allocation were corrected and lessons which pertain to all such conversions were noted. While the current OSMagic is not yet a fully functional version of Magic, the foundation is now in place for achieving this by implementing our more complex transaction model. OSMagic performs as well or better than Magic in about half of the areas tested. Those areas that showed performance degradation were examined with respect to the tradeoffs between added multi-user capabilities and database support versus the severity of the degradation, user perception of the degradation, and the frequency of use for each area, When these tradeoffs were considered along with the expected increased performance of a fully implemented and optimized OSMagic, we conclude that it is highly probable that object-oriented database management systems can provide the functionality and performance needed to support typical computer- aided design applications.

In this report, the research completed under the project in the area of database management in engineering design and optimization is described. Database management concepts used in business applications were studied and concepts suitable for engineering applications were developed. Data structures that need to be managed were identified. Database design methodologies were studied and a suitable methodology for engineering designs and optimization applications was developed. Several prototype database management systems (DBMS) were designed, developed and evaluated. Several prototype application programs utilizing a database management were developed to evaluate performance of DBMS. Based on these implementations and studies, the usual relational data model was generalized to handle engineering data types. Specifications for an integrated DBMS capable of handling relations, vectors and matrices (of different types) were developed. A system based on the specifications, called MIDAS/GR was implemented and evaluated. MIDAS/GR stands for Management of Information for Design and Analysis of Systems/Generalized Relational Model.

Tri 1 - 2015/2016

The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) is investigating the use of synthetic environments for military applications under the sponsorship of Rome Laboratories (RL). Areas under investigation include mission planning, battle management and flight simulation. The work reported in this thesis focuses on the object-oriented design and implementation of the Graphical Database Management System (GDMS) used to support research in these areas. GDMS provides the data structures, file format and algorithms to manage and render hierarchical, three-dimensional, polygonal models. Flexibility and adaptability were key factors in its design. A secondary objective of this research was to demonstrate the functionality of GDMS through the development of a characteristic application. This led to the design and implementation of a Database Generation System (DBGen) for the construction and manipulation of synthetic environments. DBGen allows a user to orient, scale, move, delete and add multi-resolution objects to synthetic environment interactively. It also provides a real time fly-through capability for immediate feedback on the dynamic response of the database. The development of the Graphical Database Management System was successful. The design and implementation of four major synthetic environment applications based on GDMS tested its flexibility, while the rapid incorporation of a number of special effects algorithms in final stages of the development cycle demonstrated its adaptability. The development of the Database Generation System was also successful. In addition to providing an excellent platform for testing GDMS functionality, it proved to be an effective tool for placing 3-D objects on terrain.

The purpose of this thesis was to design and implement a graphical user interface for a multimedia database management system prototype previously implemented at the Naval Postgraduate School. Because of the complexity of the data types and the difficulty of manipulating them, it was very hard for a casual user to use the previous system. Since graphical interaction simplifies control dialogue, the authors designed and implemented a graphical user interface using C++ and InterViews 3.0.1 for a Sun-3 workstation under a Unix X-Windows environment with mouse support. They then connected this interface to the multimedia database system prototype. Their interface supports incremental query specification using extended SQL and can be connected to database applications in several different ways. An embedded global data structure, a text file, or a character string can be used for connections. A second version of the interface for a Sun-4 workstation was built and connected to another database system using the character string and text file. This version demonstrated even better performance.

Saber is a theater level, multi-sided, airpower employment computerized wargame that can be programmed to simulate any combat scenario. The model simulates theater level combat between air and land forces, and takes into account the effects of logistics, resupply, and both theater nuclear and chemical warfare. The major objective of the Saber model is to provide a suitable educational platform to allow users to apply basic, tactical employment concepts to multiple combat units, each having a specialized mission, and incorporating every branch of the armed services. This thesis documents a graphical user interface and data management system that has been developed to execute the Saber theater level wargame simulation. It is a continuation of two previous efforts, and is one component of three thesis efforts designed to develop an integrated, on-line simulation of the Saber theater-level wargame.

The purpose of this research is to define a centralized database containing all necessary information related to the daily management in an industrial and commercial organization that is publicly owned and equipped with civil personality and financial autonomy. The system is composed of the following subsystems: o Subsystem \"Human resource management\" o Subsystem \"Provisioning\" o Subsystem \"Financial, budgetary and accounting management\" The three subsystems should be installed in a central site and at regional sites. Each site will have its own database. The central database will be supplied with the data, which come from the other sites at the end of the day or according to need via modems. It is necessary to develop a tool for remote database queries in order to accomplish this work. The platform on which the application must be executed is IBM-INFORMIX running on top of the WINDOWS operating system. The database will be a relational database. The framework used in the design and modeling consists of: o Object Oriented Analysis (OOA), which enables the development of high quality software by defining the problem structure. o The Delphi Language, which provides a robust development environment. The installation of the solution will be executed according to the following scenario: o Client/Server architecture with the object oriented development tool DELPHI. o The database will be installed on the central and regional servers. o The application will be installed on the end users' stations. o Data access will be through an open ODBC. This software will present an integrated solution that will provide centralized and accurate data, so that data will be used to derive the right decision at the best time.

The Personal Database Management System is a hardware and software system designed to support people's memory and recall processes. It is a small, low power, and inexpensive microcomputer system which employs E 2 PR0M and CMOS technology. The design is based upon how people manage their personal information, which was found to be different from the ways conventional computerized systems manage information.

The VFA-125 Safety Office located at NAS Lemoore is burdened with the enormous administrative responsibility of managing the NATOPS qualifications for over 200 pilots and passengers. During this period of military downsizing and operational funding cuts, this responsibility will require the increased attention of a smaller staff with a limited budget. The burden of paper file management could be eased through the introduction of automated record keeping while simultaneously increasing accuracy and efficiency. The potential for non-qualified personnel to fly squadron aircraft could be eliminated. Based on VFA-125 Safety Office requirements, this thesis designs and implements a database management system. The primary objective is to automate the currently utilized manual NATOPS filing system to allow the squadron Safety Officer immediate access to all NATOPS-related pilot qualification data. This system will store, sort and compare data relevant to all squadron pilots while minimizing the time spent verifying the previously-used manual filing system. Additionally, the staff will be able to query reports and generate memoranda with minimal effort. The system is also analyzed to determine possible enhancements in the future. The Aviation Safety Database System is designed using dBASE III Plus and dBASE for Windows 5.0.

The burden of paper management could be lessened through automation of record keeping, while increasing efficiency and effectiveness. Valuable time for the students could be saved through elimination of excessive paperwork which they were required to prepare. Based on requirements from the Systems Management Curricular Office, this thesis designs and implements a database management system. The primary objective is to allow the incoming class of students to enroll using this system instead of traditional paper forms, enabling the staff to focus on more non-administrative tasks. This system will store, sort and compare data relevant to all students while minimizing the need to maintain hardcopy files. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of implementing a computerized database management system to support the AFIT thesis process. A database was designed and implemented using a relational database management system. Although the database was limited to thesis topics and advisors, this system would be useful for other supervisory and administrative functions.

This thesis refined and implemented a design of a centralized data directory for distributed database management system (DDBMS) begun in a previous study for use in the AFIT Digital Engineering Laboratory. This directory contains information about all the data stored in the distributed databases. By following the life cycle programming method to develop the system this project completed a requirements analysis, detailed design and implementation of the directory as well as partial implementation of the DDBMS to test the operation of the centralized data directory. The requirements analysis outlined the functions of the central site which contained the centralized directory. This project used Structured Analysis Design Technique (SADT) diagrams to document the central site's functions. These included initializing the DDBMS updating the centralized directory sending changes to other local directories at the remote sites reconfiguring; the DDBMS and servicing requests for information in the directory. Next the project refined the detailed design of the directory processing and depicted the functional decomposition in structure charts. The following step implemented on two microcomputers only those modules necessary to show the centralized directory worked. Tests verified that one DDBMS node which received a query could request and receive location information from the other node.

A translation program was implemented for the translation of generic relational queries into the Data Management Language (DML) of the TOTAL data base management system. The objectives of this thesis were to propose and detail a method of supporting a global relational query language for a heterogeneous distributed database management system (DDBMS), design generic query translators for the translation of global relational queries into local hierarchical and network DML, and partially implement translation software for the conversion of relational queries into TOTAL DML. The initial portion of the thesis presents an overall analysis of data partitioning, query decomposition and global query management in the DDBMS. Specific proposals are advocated concerning the specific approach to be taken toward a global query manager and the design of the global schema over current databases. The second portion formalizes the assumptions and constraints present in the global relational model, and presents generic algorithms for the translation of relational queries into hierarchical and network DML. The last portion details the implementation and testing of the relational to TOTAL translator. The approach used was to take information returned from the local data directory of the distributed database in response to a relational query, and compile that information into a generated Pascal program containing the TOTAL DML commands.

This thesis designs and implements an automated database system that can be used on the Hellenic navy ships. The methodology followed is the standard systems' development life cycle (SDLC). The requirements for the system are obtained, and the database and application are designed and implemented. Paradox is used for the database management system software. Special issues like training, security, conversion and maintenance are taken into consideration. The result of this thesis is a functional application named SPAS (Shipboard Personnel Administration System) that will fulfill the users' requirements, keep track of the administrative activities of the ships, and help in performing the desired tasks accurately.

The Navy Medical Administrative Unit (NMAU) for the Monterey Peninsula has a challenging mission which encompasses many administrative tasks. Medical readiness and occupational health requirements are tracked for all Navy and Marine Corps personnel in the region. In order to fulfill their mission satisfactorily, it was necessary for NMAU to get an automated database management system. The Flight Surgeon at the Naval Postgraduate School works very closely with NMAU. The Flight Surgeon's administrative responsibilities would also benefit from a database system. Based on the requirements for NMAU a database system was designed and implemented in their clinic. Based on the Flight Surgeon's requirements the data base system was further analyzed in order to assist future upgrades that would employ the flight surgeon's requirements. The primary objective, however, was to get a system on line for NMAU that would enable them to effectively and efficiently execute their mission. The Navy Medical Administrative Unit Database System (NMAUDS 1.0) was the result of the previously described endeavors; it was written in dBASE IV version 1.5.

The need for data management standardization has been clearly identified by the Office of the Secretary of Defense as a means to realize savings in the $9 billion spent annually on information technology in DOD and to further the sharing of information. This thesis discusses the importance of data requirements, functional requirements, logical database design and application design for a prototype microcomputer dictionary system for standardizing, storing, updating and viewing data elements, the lowest level in the hierarchy of metadata. This prototype dictionary is then implemented in a powerful relational database management system, Paradox 3.0. This system will help developers within DOD to build, store, track and use standard data elements.
