A Consolidated AFIT Database and Information System (CADIS), a centralized relational database in third normal form, was designed for use by the faculty and staff of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). Information requirements were gathered by means of an in-depth data/information analysis at the directorate and division level, and used as the basis of the design. Provided with the design is a highly detailed data dictionary, in four parts, and an estimation of the approximate size of the database itself. Additionally, a system of applications programs were designed for the AFIT Directorate of Civilian Institution Programs (AFIT/CI). This system will allow efficient and easy access to the data on the database by untrained or non-programmer type users. These programs were specifically designed to provide an extremely friendly user interface between CADIS and the AFIT/CI personnel. They have been conceptually and logically documented according to the standards of software engineering.

In an era of diminishing budgets, information technology must help direct operational commanders in the maximum utilization of their available resources. The institution of a relational database management system to identify and exploit an organization's strengths will aid in keeping forces combat ready at all times. The design and implementation of ZTRAX; a training, readiness and flight hour relational database management system. ZTRAX is expected to provide historical information of home and deployed, operational and training flight evolutions which will aid in the process of training and readiness planning. The ZTRAX application was implemented in November, 1991 and is a menu driven program which permits the addition, editing and querying of data contained on two source documents; the Monthly Training and Readiness Report and the Monthly Flight Hour Report. Ztrax is run concurrently from within the Paradox program to permit a vast array of ad hoc queries, reports and the importation of graphical display mechanisms.

This thesis develops a prototype PC based Military Satellite Communications MILSATCOM) Requirements Database (MRDB) application for U.S. Space Command, using Microsoft's Access relational database management system (DBMS) for Windows. It demonstrates the advantages of using the proposed database system over the existing one and shows how U.S. Space Command can save both time and money by using a PC based interactive, graphical, and user friendly database system. A rapid prototyping approach in concert with a six phase database design process was used to develop the prototype. The first two chapters of the thesis provide a background of the application and describe database management systems in general and Microsoft Access in particular. The applications of Access - tables, queries, forms, reports, macros, and modules - to the design of the MRDB are then discussed in the succeeding five chapters. The Conclusions describe the advantages and benefits of using the prototype MRDB database system and make recommendations for future improvements. This project focused on the design, development, and implementation of a centralized electronic database for air-traffic-controller (ATC) training within the Marine Corps. The Marine Corps currently has individual electronic training database-management systems at the unit level. The existing training database-management systems are client based, unstandardized, and have significant data-entry redundancy. We developed a centralized system that is scalable and capable of supporting detailed training statistics. We identified several critical features required for successful implementation and developed a system capable of importing and processing existing training data. We analyzed an existing training database-management system used at the unit level and developed methods for accurately exporting the existing system's stored generic data. We processed the raw data and properly migrated the data to a prototype database-management system, which involved processing for proper data integrity, database normalization, and enforcing unique record-identifier usage. We developed a front-end graphical user interface to interact with the developed system and the stored training data. Future system improvements include migration to a military network, adaptation by additional units, and full integration with the Navy's Visual Information Display System.

Database designs in today's information-intensive environment, Challenge the database-system user to adhere to strict and somewhat archaic means, i.e., traditional data models and their data languages, of expressing their database applications. In light of these requirements, the user must purchase the new database system that supports the latest data model and its data language. We design and implement a comprehensive data-model-and-data- language interface which is a simple and yet effective alternative to the costly and cumbersome standard method of purchasing o developing a new database system. Our solution is two-fold. First, we use the concept of a data-model-and-data language interface to an existing database system. This not only eliminates the costs associated with building a arate, stand-alone database system to support each new data model and its language, but also allows for resource consolidation and data duplication elimination. Second, using the data-model-and-data-language interface concept, we design and implement an object-oriented-data-model-and- data-language interface for the multimodel/multilingual database system.

Saber is a theater level, multi-sided, airpower employment computerized wargame that can be programmed to simulate any combat scenario. The model simulates theater level combat between air and land forces, and takes into account the effects of logistics, resupply, and both theater nuclear and chemical warfare. The major objective of the Saber model is to provide a suitable educational platform to allow users to apply basic, tactical employment concepts to multiple combat units, each having a specialized mission, and incorporating every branch of the armed services. This thesis documents a graphical user interface and data management system that has been developed to execute the Saber theater level wargame simulation. It is a continuation of two previous efforts, and is one component of three thesis efforts designed to develop an integrated, on-line simulation of the Saber theater-level wargame.

The MK92 Fire Control System (FCS) is the heart of shipboard weapon systems found aboard U. S. Oliver Hazard Perry class FFGs. This system, based on 1970's technology, frequently requires extensive troubleshooting and supplemental shore-base support. A maintenance advisor expert system is being developed to assist shipboard technicians in correctly diagnosing system faults, providing expert advice concerning part replacement or further tests which should be made. Additional information provided by the expert system includes documentation references, alternate location for a part, and part numbers. Storing such information in a relational database that communicates with the expert system would greatly improve its maintainability, modifiability, and accuracy. This thesis addresses the design and implementation of a database to support the MK92 MOD 2 FCS Maintenance Advisor Expert System using Microsoft Access(TM). This database includes such functions as part and replacement information, database maintenance, and expert system support. Research revealed that the currently supported Windows(TM) interprogram communications mechanism of Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE), as supported by the current versions of Access and Softsell Adept(TM), will not adequately support the database to expert system interface requirements. This report describes the design and implementation of a prototype database system that was created to help the Engineering Directorate manage its Individual Development Plan (IDP) information. The database system was designed to meet the customers current needs and to be easily modifiable in the event that new needs are identified. The database uses a relational data model and the database manager includes operations for data retrieval and data management. Since mid October 1994, the database system has been used to process the directorates' FY95 IDP information.

The VFA-125 Safety Office located at NAS Lemoore is burdened with the enormous administrative responsibility of managing the NATOPS qualifications for over 200 pilots and passengers. During this period of military downsizing and operational funding cuts, this responsibility will require the increased attention of a smaller staff with a limited budget. The burden of paper file management could be eased through the introduction of automated record keeping while simultaneously increasing accuracy and efficiency. The potential for non-qualified personnel to fly squadron aircraft could be eliminated. Based on VFA-125 Safety Office requirements, this thesis designs and implements a database management system. The primary objective is to automate the currently utilized manual NATOPS filing system to allow the squadron Safety Officer immediate access to all NATOPS-related pilot qualification data. This system will store, sort and compare data relevant to all squadron pilots while minimizing the time spent verifying the previously-used manual filing system. Additionally, the staff will be able to query reports and generate memoranda with minimal effort. The system is also analyzed to determine possible enhancements in the future. The Aviation Safety Database System is designed using dBASE III Plus and dBASE for Windows 5.0.

The Personal Database Management System is a hardware and software system designed to support people's memory and recall processes. It is a small, low power, and inexpensive microcomputer system which employs E 2 PR0M and CMOS technology. The design is based upon how people manage their personal information, which was found to be different from the ways conventional computerized systems manage information.

The objective of this thesis is to provide a software tool to support the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel and Staff Function of the Indonesian Navy in making decisions with fast, timely, relevant, up-to-date and accurate information regarding Personnel Management activities. A database design is proposed including the logical and physical phases and an implementation of a personnel database prototype is undertaken on a microcomputer using dBase II.

The purpose of this thesis was to design and implement a graphical user interface for a multimedia database management system prototype previously implemented at the Naval Postgraduate School. Because of the complexity of the data types and the difficulty of manipulating them, it was very hard for a casual user to use the previous system. Since graphical interaction simplifies control dialogue, the authors designed and implemented a graphical user interface using C++ and InterViews 3.0.1 for a Sun-3 workstation under a Unix X-Windows environment with mouse support. They then connected this interface to the multimedia database system prototype. Their interface supports incremental query specification using extended SQL and can be connected to database applications in several different ways. An embedded global data structure, a text file, or a character string can be used for connections. A second version of the interface for a Sun-4 workstation was built and connected to another database system using the character string and text file. This version demonstrated even better performance.

The design, implementation, and performance analysis of a database management system implemented using abstract data types are presented. The use of abstract data types as an implementation tool is shown to have several significant advantages over current implementation techniques. First, by using a combination of abstract data types and generic procedures to structure the design of a database system, the resulting software will be more reliable. Also, by employing a programming language which supports specification and verification of abstract data types, we can Guarantee data imdependence. Finally, we demonstrate that the application of abstract data types permits the elimination of run-time interpretation of the schema and subschema such as in IBM's IMS, Univac's DMS110, and INGRES. Instead, the data manipulation routines, which are shown to be examples of generic procedures, are implemented as parameterized calls to the procedures bound to the instances of the three abstract data types used to represent the logical structure of the database. Traditional approaches to database system design and implementation involve text-oriented data access with their inherent lack of modularity, extensibility and modifiability. An alternative to this traditional approach is using visual interface for the design and implementation of databases. This alternative approach involves using software development tools (toolkits) to ensure modularity, extensibility and modifiability. To study the effectiveness of using visual interfaces, we have designed and implemented a sample application using KnowledgePro(Windows), a tool for rapid application development under Windows.

The Administrative Sciences (AS) Department of the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) has a very large database containing information regarding faculty activity in the areas of course instruction; thesis development, ongoing research, and academic service. Management of this information was disjointed and required considerable time and energy, and could be more efficiently handled with a software application. Subsequently, the choice was made to develop a database application that effectively manages these facets of the AS Department faculty workload. This thesis develops and implements the Faculty Workload Database System (FWDS) to support the AS Department. This thesis provides an in- depth discussion of the entire software application analysis, design, and implementation process. The system was produced using dBase IV, version 1.1 and will transition to operational status during FY 93.

A relational database system was designed with the goal of obtaining as near optimal behavior from the system as possible. In addition, the database was to be implemented as a general purpose system but with specific provisions for its use as a pedagogical tool for teaching database management and manipulation. The advantages and disadvantages of relational systems were explored, and based on a certain criteria a relational algebra was chosen as the basis for the data manipulation and definition language. With this background, a top-down structured design of the system was completed. Techniques used to manage data entry; i.e., the user interface, and techniques to transform those inputs in order to optimize their execution were developed and implemented.

Studies were made of the prototype GLUE/NAIL system which is a deductive database system, techniques for optimizing constraint maintenance in a distributed environment, approaches to nonmonotonic reasoning in databases, efficient main- memory algorithms for essential database operations, especially join, multway join and transitive closure, the problem of maintaining an instantiated view of data, magic-sets implementation techniques, theory of logic programs, and object-oriented versus deductive database approaches.

ARGOS is a multimedia database prototype system currently being developed by the Computer Science department of the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey. Its primary purpose is to provide a prototype system that could be used as a Battle Group Commander's assessment tool and a shipboard data management tool. We describe the software engineering aspects of our implementation and an overview of the four modules which comprise our DL/I language interface.

Traditionally, the design and implementation of a conventional database system begins with the choice of a data model followed by the specification of a model-based data language. thus, the database system is restricted to a single data model and a specific data language. An alternative to this traditional approach to database-system development is the multi-lingual database system (MLDS). The alternative approach affords the user the ability to access and manage a large collection of databases via several data models and their corresponding data languages. In this thesis we present the specification and implementation of a hierarchical/DL/I language interface for the MLDS. Specifically, we present the specification and implementation of an interfaces which translates DL/I data language calls into attribute-based data language (ABDL) requests. We describe the software engineering aspects of our implementation and an overview of the four modules which comprise our DL/I language interface.

The Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility (FACSFAC) located at North Island, San Diego, currently performs its data collection, storage and processing functions manually. Expected expansion of the scope of operations at FACSFAC will overwhelm the present system. This thesis develops an Oracle-based relational database system for use by FACSFAC. The system consists of two applications. In the scheduling application, inputs from various sources are compiled, allowing both a powerful query capability and the production of a weekly schedule of activities for the facilities and personnel assigned to FACSFAC. The exercise results application provides an automated method of gathering and querying pertinent tactical employment and range utilization data for required weekly, monthly and quarterly reports.
