As we already know, in ancient Egyptian or in Maya civilization, people used sign languages to communicate, exchange and receive information (Aparicio & Costa, 2015; Wainer, 1992). This is clear evidence that shows the importance of visual channels and graphical data in life. During the information age and the explosion of big data, using graphics to represent data plays a more and more vital role. Also the capability to understand these graphs cannot be obmitted. Data visualization literacy is the hot topic of research recently. The researchers investigated this topic in many different directions. They tried to develop a tool or a measurement to assess the data visualization literacy. In 2014, Boy et al developed a principled way to assess visualization literacy based on the Item Response Theory (IRT). And in 2016, Borner’s team also conducted research to measure visualization literacy of the public in an informal setting. However, both these studies did not provide a standardized test for evaluating visualization literacy. Inspired by Boy et al’s study, Lee and colleagues created a complete Visualization Literacy Assessment Test (VLAT) and it was proved to be valid and reliable (Donohoe & Costello, 2020). Researchers also investigated the relation between human biases and data visualization. A great deal of research studied in this field (Turpin & Plooy, 2004; Zuk & Carpendale, 2007; Cho, et al., 2017; Wall, Blaha, Paul, Cook, & Endert, 2017; Dimara, Franconeri, Plaisant, Bezerianos, & Dragicevic, 2018; Kong, Liu, & Karahalios, 2018; Valdez, Ziefle, & Sedlmair, 2018). Recently, a study from Donohoe & Costello investigating data visualization literacy among academic staff did achieve an interesting result. They found a relation between self-confidence - one of human bias - and data visualization literacy. In that research, Donohoe & Costello also collected information about the usefulness of the shown visualizations from participants’ perspectives. Most of the participants agreed that the dashboard data visualization is useful and helped them do their tasks faster but the majority of people believed that it does not help them improve or increase their performance. Moreover, they did not make any conclusion about the usefulness related to the actual data visualization literacy. Therefore, inspired by that study, this paper focuses on investigating data visualization among university students and how it relates with their self confidence.
