We present a high-performance, graphics processing unit (GPU)-based framework for the efficient analysis and visualization of (nearly) terabyte (TB)-sized 3-dimensional images. Using a cluster of 96 GPUs, we demonstrate for a 0.5 TB image: (1) volume rendering using an arbitrary transfer function at 7--10 frames per second; (2) computation of basic global image statistics such as the mean intensity and standard deviation in 1.7 s; (3) evaluation of the image histogram in 4 s; and (4) evaluation of the global image median intensity in just 45 s. Our measured results correspond to a raw computational throughput approaching one teravoxel per second, and are 10--100 times faster than the best possible performance with traditional single-node, multi-core CPU implementations. A scalability analysis shows the framework will scale well to images sized 1 TB and beyond. Other parallel data analysis algorithms can be added to the framework with relative ease, and accordingly, we present our framework as a possible solution to the image analysis and visualization requirements of next-generation telescopes, including the forthcoming Square Kilometre Array pathfinder radiotelescopes.

However, the currently available software applications to analyze RNAi screen data usually lack the ability to visualize associated gene information in an interactive fashion. Results: Here, we present ScreenSifter, an open-source desktop application developed to facilitate storing, statistical analysis and rapid and intuitive biological data mining of RNAi screening datasets. The interface facilitates meta-data acquisition and long-term safe-storage, while the graphical user interface helps the definition of a hit list and the visualization of biological modules among the hits, through Gene Ontology and protein-protein interaction analyses. The application also allows the visualization of screen-to-screen comparisons. Conclusions: Our software package, ScreenSifter, can accelerate and facilitate screen data analysis and enable discovery by providing unique biological data visualization capabilities.

Filtergraph is a web application being developed by the Vanderbilt Initiative in Data-intensive Astrophysics (VIDA) to flexibly handle a large variety of astronomy datasets. While current datasets at Vanderbilt are being used to search for eclipsing binaries and extrasolar planets, this system can be easily reconfigured for a wide variety of data sources. The user loads a flat-file dataset into Filtergraph which instantly generates an interactive data portal that can be easily shared with others. From this portal, the user can immediately generate scatter plots, histograms, and tables based on the dataset. Key features of the portal include the ability to filter the data in real time through user-specified criteria, the ability to select data by dragging on the screen, and the ability to perform arithmetic operations on the data in real time. The application is being optimized for speed in the context of very large datasets: for instance, plot generated from a stellar database of 3.1 million entries render in less than 2 seconds on a standard web server platform. This web application has been created using the Web2py web framework based on the Python programming language. Filtergraph is freely available at http://filtergraph.vanderbilt.edu/.

We present here a red, green, blue (RGB) visualization method that can serve to display environmental properties. The saturation of each color is used to represent the concentration of a given property. The implementation of that figure is illustrated through visualization of three dissolved inorganic nutrient concentrations along a vertical transect of the Mediterranean, as well as through a vertical time series of three phytoplankton group cell numbers. The RGB figures show well known properties of the water column. In addition, they reveal some lesser-known properties, such as regions in shallow water in which the ratio of phosphorus and silica to nitrogen is high, and a deep eukariotic phytoplankton community. Visualization of such data is usually performed with three separate contour or surface plots, and occasionally two properties are presented as an overlay in a single figure. The RGB figure offers a better way to visualize the interactions among the three separate plots than is commonly available.

For presentation of survey results, social science data, and other geospatial statistics requires careful attention in order to facilitate fast and accurate interpretation. Adding dimensionality can easily saturate the observer, leading to confusion instead of adding perspective. We produce over a dozen techniques to facilitate multivariate geospatial visualization, filter them with pilot groups, and then design a computer-based human experiment to evaluate their relative performance. In the experiment, the participants locate (with a mouse click) regions with extreme primary or secondary values and then later estimate numerically the values of these variables. We analyze these data with linear and logistic regression and general additive models to characterize the variance due to a learning effect, and then use general linear mixed-effects models to block out the variability due to individual participants and the independent and randomly-generated survey data used to generate the experiment plots. The effectiveness of a particular technique depends heavily on the goal of the presentation: a technique that provides relative perspective without distracting from the primary variable may not facilitate estimation that is as accurate as other techniques. Four scenarios are provided to qualify the presenters intent. Only one technique performed poorly in all four scenarios and only one technique was average in all four; all remaining varied from very good to very bad between scenarios.

Abstract A new paradigm for human brain imaging, mobile brain/body imaging (MoBI), involves synchronous collection of human brain activity (via electroencephalography, EEG) and behavior (via body motion capture, eye tracking, etc.), plus environmental events (scene and event recording) to study joint brain/body dynamics supporting natural human cognition supporting performance of naturally motivated human actions and interactions in 3-D environments (Makeig et al., 2009). Processing complex, concurrent, multi-modal, multi-rate data streams requires a signal-processing environment quite different from one designed to process single-modality time series data. Here we describe MoBILAB (more details available at sccn.ucsd.edu/wiki/MoBILAB), an open source, cross platform toolbox running on MATLAB (The Mathworks, Inc.) that supports analysis and visualization of any mixture of synchronously recorded brain, behavioral, and environmental time series plus time-marked event stream data. MoBILAB can serve as a pre-processing environment for adding behavioral and other event markers to EEG data for further processing, and/or as a development platform for expanded analysis of simultaneously recorded data streams.

This experiment is a component of the project 'Harnessing the potential of data visualization and narratives produced by media and public actors in times of pandemic or health crisis' within NRP 80 'Covid-19 in Society'.

As we already know, in ancient Egyptian or in Maya civilization, people used sign languages to communicate, exchange and receive information (Aparicio & Costa, 2015; Wainer, 1992). This is clear evidence that shows the importance of visual channels and graphical data in life. During the information age and the explosion of big data, using graphics to represent data plays a more and more vital role. Also the capability to understand these graphs cannot be obmitted. Data visualization literacy is the hot topic of research recently. The researchers investigated this topic in many different directions. They tried to develop a tool or a measurement to assess the data visualization literacy. In 2014, Boy et al developed a principled way to assess visualization literacy based on the Item Response Theory (IRT). And in 2016, Borner’s team also conducted research to measure visualization literacy of the public in an informal setting. However, both these studies did not provide a standardized test for evaluating visualization literacy. Inspired by Boy et al’s study, Lee and colleagues created a complete Visualization Literacy Assessment Test (VLAT) and it was proved to be valid and reliable (Donohoe & Costello, 2020). Researchers also investigated the relation between human biases and data visualization. A great deal of research studied in this field (Turpin & Plooy, 2004; Zuk & Carpendale, 2007; Cho, et al., 2017; Wall, Blaha, Paul, Cook, & Endert, 2017; Dimara, Franconeri, Plaisant, Bezerianos, & Dragicevic, 2018; Kong, Liu, & Karahalios, 2018; Valdez, Ziefle, & Sedlmair, 2018). Recently, a study from Donohoe & Costello investigating data visualization literacy among academic staff did achieve an interesting result. They found a relation between self-confidence - one of human bias - and data visualization literacy. In that research, Donohoe & Costello also collected information about the usefulness of the shown visualizations from participants’ perspectives. Most of the participants agreed that the dashboard data visualization is useful and helped them do their tasks faster but the majority of people believed that it does not help them improve or increase their performance. Moreover, they did not make any conclusion about the usefulness related to the actual data visualization literacy. Therefore, inspired by that study, this paper focuses on investigating data visualization among university students and how it relates with their self confidence.

This project will examine the extent to which using concrete versus abstract formats to present risk data increases subjective perception of low-probability natural disaster risks, which are commonly overlooked by the public. We hypothesize that realistic icon arrays, which are concrete formats to present probability data, will reduce participants’ psychological distance to wildfire risk, increase their subjective perception of the risk, and result in greater behavioral intention to avoid the risk, when compared to more abstract formats (i.e., stacked bar charts or numeral information).

A wide variety of software tools has been successfully used to visualize, analyze and present computational and experimental data at Langley Research Center. These tools can be categorized according to five primary uses: (1) 2-D image analysis, (2) conventional 3-D visualization, (3) volume visualization, (4) photo-realistic rendering, or (5) special purpose applications. Software is accessible in each of these categories for Langley personnel, and training or consultation can be arranged with the Data Visualization and Animation laboratory staff.

Experimental systems in biology now have the capability to produce massive amounts of numerical data. Large scale analysis of such data is facilitated by costly integrated software packages. Often however, such packages have limited or no data reduction or manipulation tools, such as basic spreadsheet functionality. Thus the researcher is compelled to utilize a competent spreadsheet package, such as Microsoft Excel, then export the data set to analysis software. Reformatting data or reducing it for analysis must then be redone in the spreadsheet after each analysis run, until the final dataset is appropriately formatted for the analysis package. In order to facilitate the use of the capabilities of the spreadsheet software and perform data reduction or basic analysis without having to switch back and forth between software units, we are building a set of analysis tools in Excel. One of the most useful of the tool set is ChromaBlast, which normalizes columnar data, sorts the data into user-selectable range-driven bins, develops a colour heat map from the data, and outputs the heat map and bin assortment for review. Using intrinsic tools in the spreadsheet software, output data can be filtered and sorted to emphasize data patterns, and facilitate rapid data review.

This paper examines how data visualization can serve as a powerful tool to improve patient health literacy by translating complex health information into accessible visual formats. Health literacy, a vital factor in effective healthcare, is influenced by diverse factors such as education, socioeconomic status, and culture. Data visualizations provide a bridge to understanding, allowing patients to more easily comprehend critical health information and, consequently, make informed decisions about their care. The paper investigated the various types of data visualizations used in patient education, discussing design principles for creating effective health-related visual content that can engage patients across health literacy levels. Furthermore, the study examined case studies illustrating successful applications of data visualizations in real-world healthcare settings. In conclusion, the paper addresses the ethical considerations and challenges in employing data visualization as a communication tool, emphasizing the need for culturally competent and inclusive design approaches to maximize comprehension and patient safety. 

The High Angle of Attack Research Vehicle (HARV) as well as other similar flight test aircraft have been using smoke flow visualization techniques to characterize the vortex flow created by leading edge extensions and the forebody. With the advent of video measurement techniques, this type of flow visualization can not only provide a qualitative assessment of the flow but also a quantitative measure to be used to validate computational fluid dynamic codes and wind tunnel test. One of the major drawbacks to employing video imaging was the introduction of false motion due to camera movement in flight. A relative motion approach using fixed targets along with the flow visualization scheme was utilized to remove unwanted motion. The relative motion algorithm was tested using a laboratory test setup where cameras underwent both translational and rotational motion to simulate both wing bending and torsion. The method was effective in removing both motions with only a slight loss of accuracy. (AN)

The major challenge facing digital forensics practitioners is the complicated task of acquiring an understanding of the digital data residing in electronic devices. Currently, this task requires significant experience and background to correctly aggregate the data their tools provide from the digital artifacts. Most of the tools available present their results in text files or tree lists. It is up to the practitioner to mentally capture a global understanding of the state of the device at the time of seizure and find the items of evidentiary interest. This research focuses on the application of Information Visualization techniques to improve the analysis of digital forensic evidence from Microsoft Windows memory captures. The visualization tool developed in this work presents both global and local views of the evidence based on user interactions with the graphics. The resulting visualizations provide the necessary details for verifying digital artifacts and assists in locating additional items of relevance. This proof-of-concept model can be modified to support various digital forensic target platforms including Mac OS X, Linux, and Android.

The technical feasibility of using low cost digital graphics computer systems to obtain quantitative data from dynamic fluid simulations has been demonstrated. A computer graphic system is capable of capturing, digitizing, and color mapping of dynamic fluid flows. Such dynamic flow simulations are typical of test conditions found in a number of flow visualization test facilities. Using injected dye fluids, it is possible to visually determine the relative dye concentrations or dispersion characteristics within recirculation and mixing zones of a test configuration. The development of a complete dynamic fluid analysis system that includes a digital graphics system and basic image enhancement software would provide many engineering and design benefits to numerous simulation and flow visualization test facilities. A dynamic fluid analysis system could have great potential in commercial markets as an engineering or design tool in the areas of flow analysis, chemical processing, design of internal and external flow control devices, or as a teaching or training aid in fluid dynamics. Our elicitation study aims to delve into how users organize inquiries while navigating unfamiliar datasets within our new environment. To achieve this, we conduct an elicitation study using the wizard-of-oz approach. This approach allows us to observe and analyze natural user interactions during data exploration and explanation within the environment, shedding light on effective strategies and patterns.
