The United States Marine Corps Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle Personnel Variant (AAAV-P) is a critical weapon system that supports the Naval Operational Maneuver from the Sea (OMFTS) concept. The AAAV-P will provide the Marine Corps with the ability to project naval power ashore in support of strategic objectives. The Marine Corps is relying on the AAAV-P to exploit the sea and land terrain in order to attain surprise and be able to rapidly take advantage of weak points in enemy littoral defenses. The first prototype of the AAAV-P will be completed in June 1999. Successful operation of the AAAV-P is heavily dependent upon the Vetronics System communications network residing within the vehicle. The Vetronics System supports three networks: a High Speed Data Bus, a Utility Bus, and a Powertrain Bus. This thesis develops a model of the High Speed Data Bus, which is considered the main data bus within the AAAV- P. The simulation results of the model are analyzed to determine if the High Speed Data Bus is properly designed to handle the anticipated communications traffic that will traverse the network. The network performance capability is evaluated under various scenarios.

This thesis analyzes the ITU-T G.7712 standard to evaluate the main features and specifications that are defined in the 11/2001 edition. The latest 03/2003 revision was also reviewed to determine what are the changes and latest update presented in that paper. In order to find out the compliance among telecommunication industry vendors, surveys were also conducted to determine which is the most widely supported standard. Finally, simulations were run using Opnet IT Guru software for the two routing protocols defined in the standard, ISIS and OSPF to examine of their characteristics and determine their usefulness. It was observed that OSPF achieves better performance and is the least obtrusive on network operations.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) are providing technical assistance to the AGRHYMET program in West Africa. AGRHYMET staff use remote sensing technology to produce satellite image maps of the Sahel region of West Africa. These image maps may show vegetation greenness, sea surface temperatures, or processed weather satellite imagery. The image maps must be distributed from the AGRHYMET Regional Center in Niger to national AGRHYMET centers in the member countries of Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Chad, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, and Senegal. After consideration of a number of land- and space-based solutions for image map distribution, the best solution was determined to be use of International Maritime Satellite Organization (INMARSAT) land-based terminals. In April 1992, a field test and proof-of-concept demonstration using land-mobile terminals produced favorable results. The USGS and USAID are setting up a wide area network using INMARSAT terminals to link the AGRHYMET sites for image data transfer. The system is in the procurement and installation phase and initial opening capability may be operational for the 1993 growing season, starting in May 1993.

The important principles of direct- and heterodyne-detection optical free-space communications are reviewed. Signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) and bit-error-rate (BER) expressions are derived for both the direct-detection and heterodyne-detection optical receivers. For the heterodyne system, performance degradation resulting from received-signal and local oscillator-beam misalignment and laser phase noise is analyzed. Determination of interfering background power from local and extended background sources is discussed. The BER performance of direct- and heterodyne-detection optical links in the presence of Rayleigh-distributed random pointing and tracking errors is described. Finally, several optical systems employing Nd:YAG, GaAs, and CO2 laser sources are evaluated and compared to assess their feasibility in providing high-data-rate (10- to 1000-Mbps) Mars-to-Earth communications. It is shown that the root mean square (rms) pointing and tracking accuracy is a critical factor in defining the system transmitting laser-power requirements and telescope size and that, for a given rms error, there is an optimum telescope aperture size that minimizes the required power. The results of the analysis conducted indicate that, barring the achievement of extremely small rms pointing and tracking errors (less than 0.2 microrad), the two most promising types of optical systems are those that use an Nd:YAG laser (lambda = 1.064 microns) and high-order pulse position modulator (PPM) and direct detection, and those that use a CO2 laser (lambda = 10.6 microns) and phase shifting keying homodyne modulation and coherent detection. For example, for a PPM order of M = 64 and an rms pointing accuracy of 0.4 microrad, an Nd:YAG system can be used to implement a 100-Mbps Mars link with a 40-cm transmitting telescope, a 20-W laser, and a 10-m receiving photon bucket. Under the same conditions, a CO2 system would require 3-m transmitting and receiving telescopes and a 32-W laser to implement such a link. Other types of optical systems, such as a semiconductor laser systems, are impractical in the presence of large rms pointing errors because of the high power requirements of the 100-Mbps Mars link, even when optimal-size telescopes are used.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is proposing the addition of a digital data channel to the existing telephone lines which connect air route traffic control centers (ARTCC's) with remote communications air-ground (RCAG) sites to economically transfer Remote Monitoring System (RMS) parameters and control data between the ARTCC's and the sites. FAA Specification FAA-E-2699a establishes the maximum allowable interference level to pilot/controller communications which would be allowed to result from the addition of the data channel. The tests described in this document were designed to verify that the requirements in FAA-E-2699a are sufficient to prevent disturbance to normal air traffic control (ATC) operations. The tests were performed by simulating and existing communications channel using data modems and samples of present-day Voice Frequency Control System (VFCS) equipment. Crosstalk levels of speech and data were measured under actual operating conditions. The test results indicated that the addition of an RMS data channel to existing FAA telephone lines is technically feasible and that the requirement in FAA-E-2699a concerning the data crosstalk in the audio portion of the communication channel is not adequate to prevent disturbance to normal ATC operations. The requirements concerning data crosstalk in the control portion and VFCS crosstalk in the data portion of the channel are sufficient. (Author)

In order to build a framework in which to discuss the evolution of data communications, the three main components of a basic data transmission system (source, medium and data sink) are considered to see what has happened in each area since 1960. This somewhat oversimplified basic approach is taken in order to avoid the confusing terminology and jargon which seem to haunt this field. The source can be any data source, including a computer system, which is transmitting data through a medium to a data sink. The medium is everything between the source and sink. The sink is often assumed to be a computer system but this is not necessarily true, since it can be a paper tape, punched cards or a central processor. The evolution of each of these three basic elements within the 10-year time frame is discussed in detail in the most elementary terms and graphically shown by figures and diagrams. The analysis was conducted to determine the minimum or critical communications requirements for a future field army. Work centered around the war games of the Intelligence Division Gaming Operation (INDIGO). The radio communications necessary for the effective operation of the battalions were transcribed in detail. These transcriptions yielded link, message function, and messages-per-conversation data. The monitoring of the battalion command nets yielded approximately 15 hr of recorded traffic for the first exercise, 36.5 hr for the second, and 35.5 hr for the third.

The development of an advanced plan for office automation, the proposed implementation of an on-site supercomputer, and imminent plans for a corporate data base will overburden the existing communications network at the Waterways Experiment Station (WES). These events have accelerated the requirements for WES to upgrade its current communications network to handle the needs of the next 15 years. Plans are being formulated to integrate the data requirements of the entire WES site by constructing a state-of-the-art high - speed digital network capable of handling any kind of traffic. The ultimate objective is to allow any user to transparently communicate with any other device on the network.

This report concludes a two-year investigation into the limitations of the VHF/UHF radio communications during military operations in a built-up area (MOBA/COBA). VHF/UHF propagation measurements, made in a suburban and an urban area, are presented and analyzed. A prediction model for mobile radio path loss in built-up areas when using ground level antennas is presented. Data are also given for path loss within and between buildings. Space and field diversity measurement data are given and correlation coefficients are analyzed. An approach to active antenna design is presented. (Author)

Tom Brown's Schooldays is a novel by Thomas Hughes first published in 1857. The story is set at Rugby School, a public school for boys, in the 1830s. Hughes attended Rugby School from 1834 to 1842. <br><br> The novel was originally published as being "by an Old Boy of Rugby", and much of it is based on the author's experiences. Tom Brown is largely based on the author's brother, George Hughes; and George Arthur, another of the book's main characters, is based on Arthur Penrhyn Stanley. The fictional Tom's life also resembles the author's in that the culminating event of his school career was a cricket match. <br><br> Tom Brown was tremendously influential on the genre of British school novels, which began in the 19th century, and is one of the few still in print. Then there is a drunk mourning his separation from the wife who just happens to be on the same train. There is even a confirmed bachelor who discovers that a confirmed spinster is his long-lost love from years ago. How these lives intertwine makes up the plot of this rollicking comedy. The piece contains racial slurs, which, although acceptable in the time and place of the story's setting, may offend modern listeners. Perhaps the most commercially successful Hollywood novel of the 1920s, Rupert Hughes' Souls for Sale is a direct response to contemporaneous charges of the film industry's moral laxities and predilections toward vice. Remember "Mem" Steddon, the pious and steadfast daughter of a religious firebrand who preaches about the sins of Hollywood, is forced to migrate to the west coast after discovering that she's become pregnant out of wedlock. On her journey, Mem runs into the inhabitants of a movie colony and soon befriends many of these delightful (if somewhat peculiar) "film folk." She finds temporary employment as a film extra and soon develops aspirations to become a star herself. But Mem soon discovers that Hollywood is a far different place than she had originally imagined and that the road to film stardom is not straightforward or easy to navigate. This novel was the basis for the popular 1923 film adaptation, which starred an up-and-coming Eleanor Boardman and was directed by Rupert Hughes himself. (Summary by ChuckW)
