The wrought iron gate to the Nazis' Dachau concentration camp that was stolen two years ago, prompting an international outcry, has been returned to the German memorial site. An iron gate that once loomed over the entrance to the Nazi's Dachau concentration camp has been returned to Germany.The gate, bearing the slogan "Arbeit macht frei," or "Work sets you free," was located in the Bergen area of Norway after authorities received an anonymous tip late last year.The gate was stolen two years ago from a memorial site....it won't be returned to its original position.However, tt will become part of the permanent exhibition where it will be kept inside a glass cabinet equipped with an alarm system.Bavaria's Culture Minister called the return of the gate Wednesday an important day for the memorial.For the AP, I'm PB from the Rivet World Desk.

This amateur made home movie dates to the 1960s, and may have been shot by a member of the U.S. Army who was assigned to Germany, or simply by an American tourist. The man (who is never seen in the footage) and a woman who was likely his wife, were on a tour in their red VW Beetle. The soundtrack married to the film was added by the unknown filmmaker.The film starts with a shot of the sign for the U.S. Army's Camp Dachau, which was the site of the former SS camp, adjacent to the infamous Dachau concentration camp. The presence of a jeep in front of the base makes it appear that it was still occupied by the U.S. Army at this time -- at some later date the camp was turned over to the German Federal Police. The film shows a brief tour of the concentration camp museum and associated memorials. It includes a visit to part of the vast grounds of the former camp including shots of graves and execution areas, the famous Fritz Koelle statue installed in 1950 depicting an unknown prisoner (1:27), with the text below the statue reading: “Den Toten zur Ehr, Den Lebenden zur Mahnung” translated “To honour the dead, to remind the living”. The film also shows flowers placed by the International Dachau Committee (2:45), additional memorials to the dead (3:50) and at (4:24) one of the crematorium smokestacks. At (4:38) the film shows views of the town of Dachau, Upper Bavaria including the Hörhammer pub (4:56) and other placid street scenes. At (7:22) are shots along a highway or autobahn, on the route to Traunstein and Salzburg. At (9:42) the driver pulls off the highway to go to a Shell petrol station, where his wife uses the restroom. At (10:50) are what appear to be the Alps, along with shots inside a large structure that looks like it contained kilns. At (11:21) the woman walks towards a red VW Bug or VW Beetle. At (12:41) the couple arrives at Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps on the Austrian border. They spend some time looking at ruins on a hillside, perhaps remnants of a WWII structure. South of town, Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest retreat, the Kehlsteinhaus, has a restaurant with alpine views (visible in the distance at 14:24). Dachau was the first concentration camp built by Nazi Germany, opening on 22 March 1933. The camp was initially intended to intern Hitler's political opponents which consisted of: communists, social democrats, and other dissidents. It is located on the grounds of an abandoned munitions factory northeast of the medieval town of Dachau, about 16 km (10 mi) northwest of Munich in the state of Bavaria, in southern Germany. After its opening by Heinrich Himmler, its purpose was enlarged to include forced labor, and, eventually, the imprisonment of Jews, Romani, German and Austrian criminals, and, finally, foreign nationals from countries that Germany occupied or invaded. The Dachau camp system grew to include nearly 100 sub-camps, which were mostly work camps or Arbeitskommandos, and were located throughout southern Germany and Austria. The main camp was liberated by U.S. forces on 29 April 1945. There were 32,000 documented deaths at the camp, and thousands that are undocumented. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. Throughout the Second World War, one of the most horrific concentration camps used by the SS was Dachau. It was the first camp opened, but one priest who was executed inisde of the site was Father Giuseppe Girotti. He was a man who helped many of those who were persecuted inside of Italy by the Nazis, and he saved many lives but Girotti would be then betrayed and he was sent through a number of different prisons. He arrived at Dachau and was held inside of the Priest Barracks along with over 1000 other members of the clergy. But he became rather ill in the final months of the Second World War, and this was a death sentence as he was sent to the hospital where he would be executed by the nurses or doctors. Throughout the Second World War, hundreds of SS guards would inflict suffering onto the inmates of the concentration camps. But the first site which was opened was Dachau and this became one of the most brutal camps of the Second World War. Hundreds of thousands of prisoners were held at Dachau, and there was horrific torture administered using methods such as the Standing Cells and public floggings. But also guards carried out a huge amount of execution. There were many different execution methods used at Dachau, from using the gallows to a firing range where executioners would shoot thousands. Also there was medical facilities where doctors and nurses would administer fatal treatment. But when the American army liberated the camp, they tried their best to save as many as they could but the stories of the survivors of Dachau was horrifying. The first concentration camp to be opened inside of Hitler's Germany was Dachau. It was a huge camp and over 188,000 prisoners were imprisoned there and over 40,000 would never make it out alive. It was a site which was synonymous with torture with devices such as the standing cells used, and the SS guards were incredibly brutal and were schooled in horrific treatment. Prisoners were treated awfully, however it was the Americans who liberated Dachau in 1945 and they found a site of true hell on earth. Thousands of corpses lay around the camp, and they also found a number of SS guards who were responsible for the crimes. But as the Americans took control of Dachau, there were a number of executions of SS guards which occurred. These were known as The Dachau Liberation Reprisals, as a young machine gunner executed over a dozen SS guards. Also around the site prisoners were getting their brutal revenge, and they set upon a number of former guards. There were also war crimes trials held relating to the guards of Dachau, and a number of these were executed for their crimes. Es bestand vom 22. März 1933 bis zur Befreiung durch die Alliierten am 29. April 1945. Soldaten der 7. US-Armee befreiten das Hauptlager. Das Gelänge lag ungefähr 20 Kilometer nordwestlich von München und wurde nach Anweisung von Heinrich Himmler, Polizeipräsident von München und ab 1934 Reichsführer der SS errichtet. Vor allem in den Anfangsjahren diente es zur Inhaftierung und zur Einschüchterung politisch Andersdenkender. Später zählten auch Priester, jüdische und homosexuelle Menschen, Zeugen Jehovas und Sinti und Roma zu den Gefangenen. Es galt als "Musterlager" für alle nationalsozialistischen Konzentrationslager und von den insgesamt mindestens 200.000 Häftlingen starben etwa 41.500. Zudem war Dachau Ausbildungsort für KZ-Wachmannschaften und SS-Führer, welche nach dem Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs auch in Vernichtungslagern eingesetzt wurden. SIEGERJUSTIZ IN  DACHAU Die US-Schauprozesse - Ein Amerikaner stellt richtig Als der 19-jährige Autor 1947 in Bremerhaven erstmals deutschen Boden betrat, waren seine Gefühle  für das besiegte Deutschlandnichtgerade freundschaftlich. Der Krieg und die Propaganda hatten alles  Positive ausgelöscht. Nach einigen Zwischenaufenthalten wurde er als Gerichtsprotokollant bei den  Dachauer Kriegsverbrecherprozessen eingesetzt. Schon bei seinem ersten Fall - Rudolf Merkel - begann er nachdenklich zu werden, zumal seine ersten  Erfahrungen mit Deutschen in Dachau keineswegs unerfreulich waren. Weitere Angeklagte und  andere Prozesse erlebte der junge Amerikaner, der zunehmend kritisch diesen Verfahren  gegenüberstand. Die Formen der übermächtigen Anklage, die schon damals deutliche Problematik der  Zeugen, insbesondere der Berufszeugen, mußten den Verfasser, der in Dachau zum jungen Mann  heranreifte, in seinem Idealismus und Gerechtigkeitssinn erschüttern. 210 Seiten

Charlotte Turner Smith (1749 – 1806) was an English poet and novelist. She initiated a revival of the English sonnet, helped establish the conventions of Gothic fiction, and wrote political novels of sensibility.<br /><br />It was in 1784, in debtor's prison with her husband Benjamin, that she wrote and published her first work, Elegiac Sonnets. The work achieved instant success, allowing Charlotte to pay for their release from prison. Smith's sonnets helped initiate a revival of the form and granted an aura of respectability to her later novels.<br /><br />Stuart Curran, the editor of Smith's poems, has written that Smith is "the first poet in England whom in retrospect we would call Romantic". She helped shape the "patterns of thought and conventions of style" for the period. Romantic poet William Wordsworth was the most affected by her works. He said of Smith in the 1830s that she was "a lady to whom English verse is under greater obligations than are likely to be either acknowledged or remembered". By the second half of the nineteenth century, however, Smith was largely forgotten.

Originally published in 1759, this work provides the philosophical underpinnings for his later works, as well as elucidating the psychological and moral foundations of the workings of a complex society. Captain John Smith (c. January 1580 – June 21, 1631) Admiral of New England was an English soldier, explorer, and author. He was knighted for his services to Sigismund Bathory, Prince of Transylvania. He is remembered for his role in establishing the first permanent English settlement in North America at Jamestown, Virginia, and his brief association with the Virginia Indian girl Pocahontas during an altercation with the Powhatan Confederacy and her father, Chief Powhatan. He was a leader of the Virginia Colony (based at Jamestown) between September 1608 and August 1609, and led an exploration along the rivers of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay.<br /><br />His books and maps may have been as important as his deeds, as they encouraged more Englishmen and women to follow the trail he had blazed and to colonize the New World. He gave the name New England to that region, and encouraged people with the comment, "Here every man may be master and owner of his owne labour and land...If he have nothing but his hands, he may...by industrie quickly grow rich."<br /><br />In 1614, Smith returned to the Americas in a voyage to the coasts of Maine and Massachusetts Bay. He named the region "New England". He made two attempts in 1614 and 1615 to return to the same coast. First a storm dismasted his ship. In the second attempt, he was captured by French pirates off the Azores. Smith escaped after weeks of captivity and made his way back to England, where he published an account of his two voyages as A Description of New England. He never left England again. 20Triplanetary, First in the Lensman Series

Triplanetary was first serialized in Amazing Stories in 1934. After the Lensman series became popular, Smith took his Triplanetary story and turned it into the first of the Lensman series, using it as a prequel to give the back story for the protaganists in the Lensmen series. He added 6 new chapters, doubling it in size and it's really a different book from the serialized novel, being published 14 years after the first. It was put into Gutenberg just last year.<br /><br /> The novel covers several episodes in an eons-long eugenics project of the super-intelligences of the Arisia. This alien race is breeding two genetic lines to become the ultimate weapon in Arisia's cosmic war with their arch enemy, the Eddore. The initial chapters cover the Kinnison genetic line during the fall of Atlantis and Nero's (Gharlane of Eddore) reign in Rome. These tales were inserted into the novel following the serialized release, along with chapters covering members of the Kinnison line in World Wars One, Two and Three. The final chapter of Triplanetary tells of the discovery of the inertialess drive that allows faster than light travel. Patrolman Conway Costigan and his friends engage in a space battle with Gray Roger the pirate gangster. This conflict is complicated by the arrival of the technologically superior, extra-Solar, amphibian-like Nevians, resulting in the first interstellar war involving humans. In this story Virgil Samms and Roderick Kinnison, two very important members of the eugenics project, are introduced. They will play the leading roles in the next story, First Lensman. This gifted nature writer who is so good at describing animals and their habitat and habits here gives us a look at many of the fascinating creatures that can be found on the seashore. Starfish, the many types of crabs, shrimp, sea weed and finally something called the Precious Wentletrap which I will allow your imagination to think about for a while. His writing is clear and, as always, easy to read. Note that these are presented as educational 'lessons' on the various animals found near the sea and each lesson or chapter ends with a few questions called 'Exercises' which the student is asked to see if the main points of the chapter are retained.
