2NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19850026576: Cross Sections For The Production Of Fragments With Z Greater Than Or Equal To 8 By Fragmentation Of Z Greater Than Or Equal To 9 And Less Than Or Equal To 26 Nuclei
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Charge changing nuclear collisions in plastic nuclear track detectors were studied using a new experimental technique of automatic track measurement for etched tracks in plastic detectors. Partial cross sections for the production of fragments of charge Z approximately 8 were measured for projectile nuclei of charge 9 approximately Z approximately 26 in the detector material CR39 and in silver. for this purpose three independent experiments were performed using Bevalac beams. The first one was an exposure of a stack of CR39 plastic plates to 1.8 GeV/nucl. Ar-40 nuclei. The second one was an exposure of another CR39 stack of 1.7 GeV/nucl. Fe-56 projectiles. In the third experiment a mixed stack of CR39 plates and silver foils was irradiated with 1.7 GeV/nucl. Fe-56 nuclei. Thus the measurement of nuclear cross sections in a light target (CR39 = C12H18O7) and as well in a heavy target (silver) was possible.

3NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19950004277: Temperature Dependent Absorption Cross-sections Of HNO3 And N2O5
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Absorption cross-sections for HNO3 and N2O5 have been measured in the wavelength region 220-450 nm, using a dual beam diode array spectrometer with a spectral resolution of 0.3 nm. The results for both compounds are in good agreement with recommended values at room temperature. However, the cross-sections of both HNO3 and N2O5 show a marked reduction with decreasing temperature in the range 295-233 K. The calculated photolysis rate of HNO3 at the low temperatures and high solar zenith angles characteristic of the polar winter and spring is significantly lower than previously estimated.

4Multilevel Models With Stochastic Volatility For Repeated Cross-Sections: An Application To Tribal Art Prices
By Silvia Cagnone, Simone Giannerini and Lucia Modugno
In this paper we introduce a multilevel specification with stochastic volatility for repeated cross-sectional data. Modelling the time dynamics in repeated cross sections requires a suitable adaptation of the multilevel framework where the individuals/items are modelled at the first level whereas the time component appears at the second level. We perform maximum likelihood estimation by means of a nonlinear state space approach combined with Gauss-Legendre quadrature methods to approximate the likelihood function. We apply the model to the first database of tribal art items sold in the most important auction houses worldwide. The model allows to account properly for the heteroscedastic and autocorrelated volatility observed and has superior forecasting performance. Also, it provides valuable information on market trends and on predictability of prices that can be used by art markets stakeholders.

5Total Cross Sections For Heavy Flavour Production At HERA
By S. Frixione, M. L. Mangano, P. Nason and G. Ridolfi
We compute total cross sections for charm and bottom photoproduction at HERA energies, and discuss the relevant theoretical uncertainties. In particular we discuss the problems arising from the small-$x$ region, the uncertainties in the gluon parton density, and the uncertainties in the hadronic component of the cross section. Total electroproduction cross sections, calculated in the Weizs\"acker-Williams approximation, are also given.

6Differential Cross Sections For Pion Charge Exchange On The Proton At 27.5 MeV
By E. Frlez, D. Pocanic, K. A. Assamagan, J. P. Chen, K. J. Keeter, R. M. Marshall, R. C. Minehart, L. C. Smith, G. E. Dodge, S. S. Hanna, B. H. King and J. N. Knudson
We have measured pion single charge exchange differential cross sections on the proton at 27.5 MeV incident $\pi^-$ kinetic energy in the center of momentum angular range between $0^\circ$ and $55^\circ$. The extracted cross sections are compared with predictions of the standard pion-nucleon partial wave analysis and found to be in excellent agreement.

7Rising Total Hadron-Hadron Cross Sections
By Giorgio Giacomelli
A historical summary is made on the measurements concerning the rising total hadron-hadron cross sections at high energies. The first part of this paper concerns the total cross section measurements performed at the Brookhaven, Serpukhov and Fermilab fixed target accelerators; then the measurements at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR), and at the CERN and at the Tevatron Fermilab proton-antiproton colliders; finally the cosmic ray measurements at even higher energies. A short discussion on Conclusions and Perspectives follows.

8Deep Inelastic Scattering Cross Sections From The Gauge/string Duality
By Ezequiel Koile, Nicolas Kovensky and Martin Schvellinger
Differential cross sections of deep inelastic scattering of charged leptons from hadrons are investigated by using the gauge/string duality. We consider vector mesons derived from different holographic dual models obtaining a general expression. We focus on the strongly coupled regime of dual gauge theories for different values of the Bjorken parameter. We find new predictions which are particularly interesting for differential scattering cross sections of polarized leptons scattered off polarized vector mesons. We also carry out a detailed comparison of the moments of the structure functions with lattice QCD results.

9Measurements Of Inclusive W/Z Production Cross Sections At CMS And W/Z As A Luminometer
By Jeremy Werner and for the CMS Collaboration
Leptonic decays of W/Z bosons provide the first electroweak precision measurements at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The results of measurements of inclusive W and Z boson production cross sections in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7 \mathrm{TeV}$ are presented, based on 2.9 pb$^{-1}$ of data recorded by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the LHC. The measurements, performed in the electron and muon decay channels, are combined to give $\sigma(\mathrm{pp} \rightarrow \mathrm{W}X) \times {\cal{B}}(\mathrm{W} \rightarrow \ell \nu) = 9.95\pm0.07\,{\textrm{(stat.)}}\pm 0.28\,{\textrm{(syst.)}}\pm1.09\,{\textrm{(lumi.)}} \mathrm{nb}$ and $\sigma(\mathrm{pp} \rightarrow \mathrm{Z}X) \times {\cal{B}}(\mathrm{Z} \rightarrow \ell^+ \ell^-) = 0.931\pm0.026\,{\textrm{(stat.)}}\pm 0.023\,{\textrm{(syst.)}}\pm0.102\,{\textrm{(lumi.)}} \mathrm{nb}$, where $\ell$ stands for either $\mathrm{e}$ or $\mu$. Theoretical predictions, calculated at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD using recent parton distribution functions (PDFs), are in agreement with the measured cross sections. Hence copious production of these well understood and clean signatures suggest the use of W/Z as a "standard candle" for measuring the luminosity at the LHC alongside the current Van der Meer (VdM) separation scan method.

10Soft Edge Of Hadron Scattering And Mini-jet Models For The Total And Inelastic Pp Cross-sections At LHC And Beyond
By D. A. Fagundes, A. Grau, G. Pancheri, Y. N. Srivastava and O. Shekhovtsova
We show that the onset and rise of QCD mini-jets provide the dynamical mechanism behind the appearance of a soft edge in pp collisions around ISR energies and thus such a soft edge is built in our mini-jet model with soft gluon resummation. Here the model is optimized for LHC at $\sqrt{s} = 7, 8 TeV$ and predictions made for higher LHC and cosmic ray energies. Further, we provide a phenomenological picture to discuss the breakup of the total cross-section into its elastic, uncorrelated and correlated inelastic pieces in the framework of a one-channel eikonal function.

11Numerical Simulation Of The Evolution Of Glacial Valley Cross Sections
By Hakime Seddik, Ralf Greve, Shin Sugiyama and Renji Naruse
A numerical model was developed for simulating the formation of U-shaped glacial valleys by coupling a two-dimensional ice flow model with an erosion model for a transverse cross section. The erosion model assumes that the erosion rate varies quadratically with sliding speed. We compare the two-dimensional model with a simple shallow-ice approximation model and show the differences in the evolution of a pre-glacial V-shaped valley profile using the two models. We determine the specific role of the lateral shear stresses acting on the glacier side walls in the formation of glacial valleys. By comparing the model results with field data, we find that U-shaped valleys can be formed within 50 ka. A shortcoming of the model is that it primarily simulates the formation of glacial valleys by deepening, whereas observed valleys apparently have formed mainly by widening.

12One- And Two-photon Ionization Cross Sections Of The Laser Excited 6s6p^1P_1 State Of Barium
By John R. Tolsma, Daniel J. Haxton, Rekishu Yamazaki, Daniel S. Elliott and Chris H. Greene
Stimulated by a recent measurement of coherent control in photoionization of atomic barium, we have calculated one- and two-photon ionization cross sections of the aligned 6s6p^1P_1 state of barium in the energy range between the 5d_{3/2} and 5d_{5/2} states of Ba^+. We have also measured these photionization spectra in the same energy region, driving the one- or two-photon processes with the second or first harmonic of a tunable dye laser, respectively. Our calculations employ the eigenchannel R-matrix method and multichannel quantum defect theory to calculate the rich array of autoionizing resonances in this energy range. The non-resonant two-photon process is described using lowest-order perturbation theory for the photon-atom interactions, with a discretized intermediate state one-electron continuum. The calculations provide an absolute normalization for the experiment, and they accurately reproduce the rich resonance structures in both the one and two-photon cross sections, and confirm other aspects of experimental observations. These results demonstrate the ability of these computationally inexpensive methods to reproduce the experimental observables in one- and two-photon ionization of heavy alkaline earths, and they lay the groundwork for future studies of the phase-controlled interference between one-photon and two-photon ionization processes.

13Production Cross Sections Of Neutron Rich Isotopes From A 82Se Beam
By O. B. Tarasov, D. J. Morrissey, A. M. Amthor, L. Bandura, T. Baumann, D. Bazin, J. S. Berryman, G. Chubarian, N. Fukuda, A. Gade, T. N. Ginter, M. Hausmann, N. Inabe, T. Kubo, J. Pereira, M. Portillo, B. M. Sherrill, A. Stolz, C. Sumithrarachchi, M. Thoennessen and D. Weisshaar
Production cross sections for neutron-rich nuclei from the fragmentation of a 82Se beam at 139 MeV/u were measured. The longitudinal momentum distributions of 122 neutron-rich isotopes of elements $11 \le Z \le 32$ were determined by varying the target thickness. Production cross sections with beryllium and tungsten targets were determined for a large number of nuclei including several isotopes first observed in this work. These are the most neutron-rich nuclides of the elements $22 \le Z \le 25$ (64Ti, 67V, 69Cr, 72Mn). One event was registered consistent with 70Cr, and another one with 75Fe. A one-body Qg systematics is used to describe the production cross sections based on thermal evaporation from excited prefragments. The current results confirm those of our previous experiment with a 76Ge beam: enhanced production cross sections for neutron-rich fragments near Z=20.

14Measurements Of Normalized Differential Cross-sections For Ttbar Production In Pp Collisions At Sqrt(s) = 7 TeV Using The ATLAS Detector
By ATLAS Collaboration
Measurements of normalized differential cross-sections for top-quark pair production are presented as a function of the top-quark transverse momentum, and of the mass, transverse momentum, and rapidity of the ttbar system, in proton--proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb^-1, recorded in 2011 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Events are selected in the lepton+jets channel, requiring exactly one lepton and at least four jets with at least one of the jets tagged as originating from a b-quark. The measured spectra are corrected for detector efficiency and resolution effects and are compared to several Monte Carlo simulations and theory calculations. The results are in fair agreement with the predictions in a wide kinematic range. Nevertheless, data distributions are softer than predicted for higher values of the mass of the ttbar system and of the top-quark transverse momentum. The measurements can also discriminate among different sets of parton distribution functions.

15Measurement Of Z/$γ$+jet+X And $γ$+b/c+X Cross Sections With The D0 Detector
By Murilo Rangel
We present measurements of differential cross sections for the inclusive $Z/\gamma^*$ + jet production and the inclusive photon plus heavy flavor production in a data sample of 1fb$^{-1}$ collected with the D{\O}detector in proton-antiproton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.96 TeV. In the first measurement, we compare kinematic distributions of the $Z/\gamma^*$ and the jets as well as various angles of the $Z$+jet system with different Monte Carlo event generators and next-to-leading order perturbative QCD (NLO pQCD) predictions with non-perturbative corrections applied. In the second measurement, we compare the results with NLO pQCD predictions, covering photon transverse momenta 30-150 GeV, photon rapidities $|y^{\gamma}| < 1.0$, jet rapidities $|y^{jet}| < 0.8$, and jet transverse momenta $p_{T}^{jet} > 15$ GeV.

16Importance Of Fluctuations Of Cross Sections In Muon-catalysed T-t Fusion Reactions
By S. Kimura and A. Bonasera
We discuss the reaction rate of the muon-catalysed $t$-$t$ fusion. The reaction rate is determined as a function of the temperature using the model of "in flight" fusion. We especially take into account the effect of the fluctuation of the cross section due to the existence of the muon. The obtained reaction rate 5.0$\times10^{-3} \mu$s$^{-1}$ is a factor of 10$^{-3}$ smaller than the experimental muonic cycling rate in the solid tritium target.

17(n,$γ$) Cross Sections Of Light P Nuclei -- Towards An Updated Database For The P Process
By I. Dillmann, M. Heil, F. Käppeler, R. Plag, T. Rauscher and F. -K. Thielemann
The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by the s and r processes. However, a small amount of stable isotopes on the proton-rich side cannot be made by neutron capture and are thought to be produced by photodisintegration reactions on existing seed nuclei in the so-called "p process". So far most of the p-process reactions are not yet accessible by experimental techniques and have to be inferred from statistical Hauser-Feshbach model calculations. The parametrization of these models has to be constrained by measurements on stable proton-rich nuclei. A series of (n,$\gamma$) activation measurements on p nuclei, related by detailed balance to the respective photodisintegrations, were carried out at the Karlsruhe Van de Graaff accelerator using the $^7$Li(p,n)$^7$Be source for simulating a Maxwellian neutron distribution of kT= 25 keV. We present here preliminary results of our extended measuring program in the mass range between A=74 and A=132, including first experimental (n,$\gamma$) cross sections of $^{74}$Se, $^{84}$Sr, $^{120}$Te and $^{132}$Ba, and an improved value for $^{130}$Ba. In all cases we find perfect agreement with the recommended MACS predictions from the Bao et al. compilation.

20Doubly Differential Cross Sections For Galactic Heavy-ion Fragmentation
By Cucinotta, Francis A., Norbury, John W., Khandelwal, Govind S. and Townsend, Lawrence W
An abrasion-ablation T-matrix formulation is applied to the calculation of double differential-cross sections in projectile fragmentation of 2.1 GeV/nucleon O-16 on Be-9 and 86 MeV/nucleon C-12 on C-12 and Ag-108. An exponential parameterization of the ablation T-matrix is used and the total width of the intermediate states is taken as a parameter. Fitted values of the total width to experimental results are used to predict the lifetime of the ablation stage and indicate a decay time on the order of 10 to the -19th power sec.

21Measurement Of Absolute Hadronic Branching Fractions Of D Mesons And E^+ E^- --> D D-bar Cross Sections At The Psi(3770)
By CLEO Collaboration and S. Dobbs
Using 281 /pb of e^+ e^- collisions recorded at the psi(3770) resonance with the CLEO-c detector at CESR, we determine absolute hadronic branching fractions of charged and neutral D mesons using a double tag technique. Among measurements for three D^0 and six D^+ modes, we obtain reference branching fractions B(D^0 --> K^-pi^+) = (3.891 +- 0.035 +- 0.059 +- 0.035)% and B(D^+ --> K^-pi^+pi^+) = (9.14 +- 0.10 +- 0.16 +- 0.07)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is all systematic errors other than final state radiation (FSR), and the third is the systematic uncertainty due to FSR. We include FSR in these branching fractions by allowing for additional unobserved photons in the final state. Using an independent determination of the integrated luminosity, we also extract the cross sections sigma(e+e- --> D^0 D^0-bar) = (3.66+- 0.03 +- 0.06) nb and sigma(e+e- --> D^+ D^-) = (2.91+- 0.03 +- 0.05) nb at a center of mass energy, E_cm = 3774 +- 1 MeV.

22On The P-Wave Contributions To The Cross Sections Of $t\bar{t}$ And $\t\bar{\t}$ Near Threshold
By Wolfgang Mödritsch
The approach used for the determination of S-wave amplitudes containing the application of the nonrelativistic approximation in the case of P-waves leads to unphysical divergencies. We show how to avoid the latter in calculations of contributions to the cross section near threshold in agreement with field theory. This enables us to give quantitatively reliable predictions for the forward-backward asymmetry and for the axial contribution to the total cross section for the top-antitop system. Also the cross section for the production of stop-antistop near threshold is determined.

24Total Cross Sections For Neutron-nucleus Scattering
By S. V. Suryanarayana, H. Naik, S. Ganesan, S. Kailas, R. K. Choudhury and Guinyum Kim
Systematics of neutron scattering cross sections on various materials for neutron energies up to several hundred MeV are important for ADSS applications. Ramsauer model is well known and widely applied to understand systematics of neutron nucleus total cross sections. In this work, we examined the role of nuclear effective radius parameter (r$_0$) on Ramsauer model fits of neutron total cross sections. We performed Ramsauer model global analysis of the experimental neutron total cross sections reported by W. P. Abfalterer, F. B. Bateman, {\it et. al.,}, from 20MeV to 550MeV for nuclei ranging from Be to U . The global fit functions which can fit total cross section data over periodic table are provided along with the required global set of parameters. The global fits predict within $\pm 8%$ deviation to data, showing the scope for improvement. It has been observed that a finer adjustment of r$_0$ parameter alone can give very good Ramsauer model description of neutron total scattering data within $\pm 4%$ deviation. The required r$_0$ values for Ramsauer model fits are shown as a function of nuclear mass number and an empirical formula is suggested for r$_0$ values as a function of mass number. In optical model approach for neutron scattering, we have modified the real part of Koning-Deleroche potentails to fit the neutron total cross sections using SCAT2 code. The modified potentails have a different energy dependence beyond 200MeV of neutron energy and fit the total cross sections from Al to Pb.

25Calculations Of The K$^{+}$-Nucleus Microscopic Optical Potential And Of The Corresponding Differential Elastic Cross Sections
By V. K. Lukyanov, E. V. Zemlyanaya, K. V. Lukyanov and K. M. Hanna
Calculations are made of the $K^{+}+^{12}$C, $^{40}$Ca differential elastic scattering cross sections at the beam momenta 0.635, 0.715, and 0.8 GeV/c. To this end the microscopic optical potential derived in the high-energy approximation was used where existing data on the kaon-nucleon amplitude and on the point-like density distributions of target-nuclei were utilized. The effect of different methods of relativization was studied and shown to play an important role. A good agreement with the experimental data on differential elastic cross sections was obtained.

27Relativistic Elastic Differential Cross Sections For Equal Mass Nuclei
By C. M. Werneth, K. M. Maung and W. P. Ford
The effects of relativistic kinematics are studied for nuclear collisions of equal mass nuclei. It is found that the relativistic and non-relativistic elastic scattering amplitudes are nearly indistinguishable, and, hence, the relativistic and non-relativistic differential cross sections become indistinguishable. These results are explained by analyzing the Lippmann-Schwinger equation with the first order optical potential that was employed in the calculation

28Detecting Neutrinos From AGN: New Fluxes And Cross Sections
By Gary C. Hill
New information on the structure of the nucleon from the HERA ep collider leads to higher neutrino cross sections for the processes nu_mu + N --> mu + X needed to calculate the expected rates of astrophysical neutrino induced muons in large detectors either under construction, or in the design stage. These higher cross sections lead to higher muon rates for arrival angles where neutrino attenuation in the earth is less important. On the other hand, new estimates of AGN neutrino fluxes suggest that the expected muon rates in these detectors may be much lower than previously calculated. I use the new cross sections to calculate the expected muon rates and angular distributions in large detectors for a variety of AGN models and compare these rates with the atmospheric neutrino backrounds (from both conventional decay channels and the "prompt" charmed meson decay channels). If the lowest flux estimates are correct, there may be diffculties in determining the origin of a small excess of muons, due to the large uncertainty in the rate of the charmed meson neutrino production channel. However, the more optimistic AGN neutrino fluxes should be detectable in proposed detectors, such as DUMAND-II, AMANDA, NESTOR and Lake Baikal.

29Progress And Open Questions In The Physics Of Neutrino Cross Sections
By L. Alvarez-Ruso, Y. Hayato and J. Nieves
New and more precise measurements of neutrino cross sections have renewed the interest in a better understanding of electroweak interactions on nucleons and nuclei. This effort is crucial to achieve the precision goals of the neutrino oscillation program, making new discoveries, like the CP violation in the leptonic sector, possible. We review the recent progress in the physics of neutrino cross sections, putting emphasis on the open questions that arise in the comparison with new experimental data. Following an overview of recent neutrino experiments and future plans, we present some details about the theoretical development in the description of (anti)neutrino-induced quasielastic scattering and the role of multi-nucleon quasielastic-like mechanisms. We cover not only pion production in nucleons and nuclei but also other inelastic channels including strangeness production and photon emission. Coherent reaction channels on nuclear targets are also discussed. Finally, we briefly describe some of the Monte Carlo event generators, which are at the core of all neutrino oscillation and cross section measurements.

30Unveiling Pairing Anti-halo Effect In Odd-even Staggering In Reaction Cross Sections Of Weakly Bound Nuclei
By K. Hagino and H. Sagawa
We investigate the spatial extension of weakly bound Ne and C isotopes by taking into account the pairing correlation with the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) method and a 3-body model, respectively. We show that the odd-even staggering in the reaction cross sections of $^{30,31,32}$Ne and $^{14,15,16}$C are successfully reproduced, and thus the staggering can be attributed to the pairing anti-halo effect. A correlation between a one-neutron separation energy and the anti-halo effect is demonstrated for $s$- and p-waves using the HFB wave functions.

31Total Cross Sections
By Rohini M. Godbole, A. Grau, G. Pancheri and Y. Srivastava
A unified approach to total cross-sections, based on the QCD contribution to the rise with energy, is presented for the processes $pp$, $p{\bar p}$, $\gamma p, \gamma \gamma, e^+e^- \to hadrons$. For proton processes, a discussion of the role played by soft gluon summation in taming the fast rise due to mini-jets is presented. For photon-photon processes, a comparison with other models indicates the need for precision measurements in both the low and high energy region, likely only with measurements at future Linear Colliders.

32Improved Low Q2 Model For Neutrino And Electron Nucleon Cross Sections In Few GeV Region
By Arie Bodek, Inkyu Park and Un-ki Yang
We present an improved model on neutrino- and electron-nucleon scattering cross sections using effective leading order PDFs with a new scaling variable xi_w. Non-perturbative QCD effects at low Q^2 are separately treated for u and d valence quarks, and sea quarks. The improved model uses all inelastic charged lepton F_2 data (SLAC/BCDMS/NMC/HERA), and photoproduction data on proton and deuterium. In this way, we obtain an improved model which describes all inelastic scattering charged lepton data, JLAB resonance data, and neutrino data. This improved model is expected to be better for neutrino oscillation experiments at few GeV region.

33On Total Inelastic Cross-sections And The Average Depth Of The Maximum Of Extensive Air Showers
By Joerg R. Hoerandel
The model dependence of the development of extensive air showers generated by high-energy cosmic-ray particles in the atmosphere is studied. The increase of proton-proton and proton-air inelastic cross-sections and values for the elasticity are varied in the hadronic interaction model QGSJET. Using the CORSIKA simulation program, the impact of these changes is investigated on air shower observables like the average depth of the shower maximum X_max and the number of muons and electrons at ground level. Calculating the mean logarithmic mass from experimental X_max values, it is found that a moderate logarithmic increase of the proton-proton inelastic cross-section from sigma_pp^inel=51 mb at E_0=10^6 GeV to sigma_pp^inel=64 mb at E_0=10^8 GeV and an elasticity, additionally increased by 10% to 15%, describes the data best. Using these parameters, the mean logarithmic mass lna derived from X_max measurements is compatible with the extrapolations of the results of direct measurements to high energies using the poly-gonato model.

By Defense Technical Information Center
This report discusses design criteria, design procedures, and practical considerations involved in planning, design, and construction of rubble-mound breakwaters. Currently available methods for estimating rates of damage to breakwater armor and for predicting wave transmission characteristics are also described. Using information typically available today to most breakwater designers, a step-wide procedure is presented which can identify an optimum breakwater cross section, both in terms of structural integrity and functional performance.

36Proton-proton Cross-sections: The Interplay Between Density And Radius
By R. Conceição, J. Dias de Deus and M. Pimenta
We argue that there are two mechanisms responsable for the growth of high energy cross-sections - \sigma_{tot} and \sigma_{el}, say - in pp collisions. One is by the increase of matter \emph{density}, resulting in the black disk saturation. The other is by exclusively radial expansion affecting the periphery of the overlap area. Within this simple model we can reproduce all available data in pp from ISR to LHC. In order to achieve a fast growth in the very high energy cosmic ray energies, we propose a fast black disk saturation followed by the dominance of geometric scaling (GS).

Excitation functions for total reaction cross sections, $\sigma_R$, were measured for the light, mainly proton-rich nuclei $^6$Li, $^7$Be, $^{10}$B, $^{9,10,11}$C, $^{12}$N, $^{13,15}$O, and $^{17}$Ne incident on a Si telescope at energies between 15 and 53 MeV/nucleon. The telescope served as target, energy degrader and detector. Proton-removal cross sections, $\sigma_{2p}$ for $^{17}$Ne and $\sigma_p$ for most of the other projectiles, were also measured. The strong absorption model reproduces the $A$-dependence of $\sigma_R$, but not the detailed structure. Glauber multiple scattering theory and the JLM folding model provided improved descriptions of the measured $\sigma_R$ values. $rms$ radii, extracted from the measured $\sigma_R$ using the optical limit of Glauber theory, are in good agreement with those obtained from high energy data. One-proton removal reactions are described using an extended Glauber model, incorporating second order noneikonal corrections, realistic single particle densities, and spectroscopic factors from shell model calculations.

39Resolving The Discrepancy Of 135 MeV Pd Elastic Scattering Cross Sections And Relativistic Effects

Three precise measurements for elastic pd scattering at 135 MeV/A have been performed with the three different experimental setups. The cross sections are described well by the theoretical predictions based on modern nucleon-nucleon forces combined with three nucleon forces. Relativistic Faddeev calculations show that relativistic effects are restricted to backward angles. This result supports the two measurements recently reported by RIKEN and contradicts the KVI data.

40Neutrino Capture Cross Sections For Ar-40 And Beta-decay Of Ti-40
By W. E. Ormand, P. M. Pizzochero, P. F. Bortignon and R. A. Broglia
Shell-model calculations of solar neutrino absorption cross sections for $^{40}$Ar, the proposed component of the ICARUS detector, are presented. It is found that low-lying Gamow-Teller transitions lead to a significant enhancement of the absorption rate over that expected from the Fermi transition between the isobaric analog states, leading to an overall absorption rate of 6.7 SNU. We also note that the pertinent Gamow-Teller transitions in $^{\sss 40}$Ar are experimentally accessible from the $\beta$-decay of the mirror nucleus $^{\sss 40}$Ti. Predictions for the branching ratios to states in $^{\sss 40}$Sc are presented, and the theoretical halflife of 53~ms is found to be in good agreement with the experimental value of $56^{+18}_{-12}$~ms.

41Nonperturbative Corrections In Resummed Cross Sections
By G. P. Korchemsky and G. Sterman
We show that the resummation of large perturbative corrections in QCD leads to ambiguities in high energy cross sections that are suppressed by powers of large momentum scales. These ambiguities are caused by infrared renormalons, which are a general feature of resummed hard-scattering functions in perturbative QCD, even though these functions are infrared safe order-by-order in perturbation theory. As in the case of the operator product expansion, the contributions of infrared renormalons to coefficient functions may be absorbed into the definition of higher-dimensional operators, which induce nonperturbative corrections that are power-suppressed at high energies. The strength of the suppression is determined by the location of the dominant infrared renormalon, which may be identified explicitly in the resummed series. In contrast to the operator product expansion, however, the relevant operators in factorized hadron-hadron scattering and jet cross sections are generally nonlocal in QCD, although they may be expressed as local operators in an effective theory for eikonalized quarks. In this context, we verify and interpret the presence of $1/Q$ corrections to the inclusive Drell-Yan cross section with $Q$ the pair mass. In a similar manner, we find $\exp(-b^2\ln Q)$ corrections in the impact parameter space of the transverse momentum distributions of the Drell-Yan process and $e^+e^-$ annihilation. We also show that the dominant nonperturbative corrections to cone-based jet cross sections behave as $1/(Q\delta)$, with $\delta$ the opening angle of the jet and $Q$ the center of mass energy.

42Odd-even Staggering Of Reaction Cross Sections For 22,23,24O Isotopes
By K. Hagino and H. Sagawa
The interaction cross sections of $^{22,23}$O nuclei at 900 MeV/nucleon have been measured recently by Kanungo {\it et al.}. We show that the odd-even staggering parameter of interaction cross sections deduced from these new data agrees well with the theoretical systematics expected for the neutron separation energy of $S_n$=2.74$\pm$0.120 MeV for $^{23}$O. We also discuss briefly the energy dependence of the staggering parameter.

By The BABAR Collaboration
We study the processes $e^+ e^-\to K^0_S K^0_L\pi^0\gamma$, $K^0_S K^0_L\eta\gamma$, and $K^0_S K^0_L\pi^0\pi^0\gamma$, where the photon is radiated from the initial state, providing cross section measurements for the hadronic final states over a continuum of center-of-mass energies. The results are based on 469~$fb^{-1}$ of data collected at or near the $\Upsilon(4S)$~ resonance with the BaBar detector at SLAC. We present the first measurements of the $e^+ e^-\to K^0_S K^0_L\pi^0$, $K^0_S K^0_L\eta$, and $K^0_S K^0_L\pi^0\pi^0$ cross sections up to a center-of-mass energy of 4~GeV, and study their intermediate resonance structures. We observe $J/\psi$ decays to all of these final states for the first time, present measurements of their $J/\psi$ branching fractions, and search for $\psi(2S)$ decays.

44Power Corrections In Eikonal Cross Sections
By Eric Laenen, George Sterman and Werner Vogelsang
We discuss power corrections associated with the infrared behavior of the perturbative running coupling in the eikonal approximation to Drell-Yan and other annihilation cross sections in hadron-hadron scattering. General properties of the eikonal approximation imply that only even powers of the energy scale are necessary.

45Two-photon Mediated Resonance Production In E+e- Collisions: Cross Sections And Density Matrices
By F. A. Berends and R. van Gulik
Earlier described model amplitudes are used in this paper to evaluate both cross sections and density matrices for two-photon mediated resonance production in e^+e^- collisions. All 25 q\bar{q} low-lying ^1S_0, ^3P_J and ^1D_2 resonances can thus be treated. Two independent methods are described to obtain the resonance production density matrices and cross sections. These density matrices combined with a resonance decay density matrix give the detailed angular distributions of the resonance decay products. For two particular decays, \chi_{c2},\chi_{c1}\to\gamma J/\psi the details are given. Several numerical results are presented as well.

48Fully Double-logarithm-resummed Cross Sections
By S. Albino, P. Bolzoni, B. A. Kniehl and A. Kotikov
We calculate the complete double logarithmic contribution to cross sections for semi-inclusive hadron production in the modified minimal-subtraction scheme by applying dimensional regularization to the double logarithm approximation. The full double logarithmic contribution to the coefficient functions for inclusive hadron production in electron-positron annihilation is obtained in this scheme for the first time. Our result agrees with all fixed order results in the literature, which extend to next-next-to-leading order.

50Elastic Pbar-d Scattering And Total Pbar-d Cross Sections
By Yu. N. Uzikov and J. Haidenbauer
Elastic pbar-d scattering is studied within the Glauber theory based on the single- and double pbar-N scattering mechanisms. The full spin dependence of the elementary pbar-N scattering amplitudes is taken into account and both the S- and D-wave components of the deuteron are considered. The treatment of the spin dependence is done in a (properly modified) formalism developed recently by Platonova and Kukulin for the pd -> pd scattering process. Predictions for differential cross sections and the spin observables A_y^d, A_y^pbar, A_xx, A_yy are presented for antiproton beam energies between 50 and 300 MeV, using amplitudes generated from the Nbar-N interaction model developed by the Juelich group. Total polarized cross sections are calculated utilizing the optical theorem. The efficiency of the polarization buildup for antiprotons in a storage ring is investigated.

1Humorous Readings and Recitations
By Leopold Wagner

Before radio, television, and electronic mass media, lectures, recitations, public readings, and other public performances were important ways of sharing new works with the public or attracting public attention to issues and authors of the time. Public performance was, in a sense, the internet of its day, as people sought to learn of the world around them, as well as entertain themselves. This anthology of short humorous pieces was intended as a ready reference of material of all sorts to those who participated in public performance, whether professionally, or as part of a school or community program. The pieces themselves were intended to be read aloud, shared with, and appreciated by, an audience. This intent is not dissimilar to the mission of Librivox in the twenty-first century. They were written by popular authors of the period, some of whose names are still well known in the twenty first-century, such as J. M. Barrie (Peter Pan), Lewis Carroll (Alice in Wonderland), W.S. Gilbert (HMS Pinafore) and W.M. Thackeray (Vanity Fair), as well as others whose popularity has waned. (DrPGould)

2Epics and Romances of the Middle Ages
By Wilhelm Wägner

This volume contains the principal hero-lays of the six great epic cycles of the Teutonic Middle Ages: The Langobardian Legends, the Amelung and Kindred Legends; Dietrich of Bern's Adventures; the Nibelung Legends; the Hegeling Legends; and Beowulf. To them, the author has added the great mythical Carolingian cycle, which centred round the persons of Charlemagne and his heroes, and the Breton ones of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, as well as the legend of the Holy Grail. Therefore, this one book tells all of the great epic and romances of the Middle Ages in accessible language for the general public. (Summary by Leni)

5Ring of the Niblung
By Richard Wagner
An English language dramatic reading of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Niblung) referred to by the composer as a Bühnenfestspiel ("stage festival play"). Wagner was both composer and librettist for the epic dramas comprising "the Ring Cycle". His intent was that a prelude, Das Rheingold (The Rhinegold), should be performed of an evening and that the trilogy of Die Walküre (The Valkyrie), Siegfried and Götterdämmerung (Twilight of the Gods) should thence be performed on the three succeeding days. - Summary by Brian Fullen <br><b>Cast List:</b> Alberich: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/18075"> PaulWelford</a><br> Brünnhilde: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/4174"> Availle</a><br> Donner: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/17713"> Brian Fullen</a><br> Erda: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/18543"> Agnes Robert Behr</a><br> Fafner: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/6754"> ToddHW</a><br> Fasolt: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/12627"> Dave Lantz</a><br> Flosshilde: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/19161"> AliceStein</a><br> Freia: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/13257"> Elsie Selwyn</a><br> Fricka: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/16764"> dc</a><br> Froh: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/19151"> Michael Faze</a><br> Gerhilde: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/7170"> Alan Mapstone</a><br> Grimgerde: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/17713"> Brian Fullen</a><br> Gunther: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/7170"> Alan Mapstone</a><br> Gutrune: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/18246"> Leanne Cvetan</a><br> Hagen: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/4705"> Algy Pug</a><br> Helmwige: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/17752"> redrun</a><br> Hunding: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/7170"> Alan Mapstone</a><br> Loge: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/7170"> Alan Mapstone</a><br> Mime: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/13577"> Adrian Stephens </a><br> First Norn: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/18543"> Agnes Robert Behr</a><br> Second Norn: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/19180"> Dottedrhythm</a><br> Third Norn: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/19161"> AliceStein</a><br> Ortlinde: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/19161"> AliceStein</a><br> Rossweisse: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/18246"> Leanne Cvetan</a><br> Schwertleite: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/14297"> Scarbo</a><br> Siegfried: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/17759"> James Escareno</a><br> Sieglinde: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/18543"> Agnes Robert Behr</a><br> Siegmund: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/17713"> Brian Fullen</a><br> Siegrune: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/19014"> Belinda McReynolds</a><br> Vassals: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/4705"> Algy Pug</a>, <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/7170"> Alan Mapstone</a>, <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/17713"> Brian Fullen</a><br> Waltraute: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/19180"> Dottedrhythm</a><br> Wellgunde: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/18246"> Leanne Cvetan</a><br> Woglinde: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/19199"> Wildcard</a><br> Women: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/18543"> Agnes Robert Behr</a>, <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/19161"> AliceStein</a>, <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/19180"> Dottedrhythm</a>, <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/18246"> Leanne Cvetan</a><br> Wood Bird: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/7170"> Alan Mapstone</a><br> Wotan (The Wanderer): <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/17576"> Beeswaxcandle</a><br> Stage Directions: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/17713"> Brian Fullen</a><br> Editing: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/17713"> Brian Fullen</a>, <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/18075"> PaulWelford</a>, <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/19161"> AliceStein</a>
