After the holidays, the supply of blood drops off for hospitals everywhere. This week, the American Red Cross got a boost in their numbers in Coon Rapids. The Coon Rapids Fire Department sponsored a blood drive on Wednesday at the Coon Rapids Civic Center. The Red Cross welcomed walk-ins and those with appointments. Even members of the fire department stopped in to donate. "This is our fourth time I believe sponsoring a blood drive here at Coon Rapids City Hall and our goal is obviously to get more blood for the Red Cross," says assistant fire chief Aaron Johnston. "They’re obviously always in need of donors to give blood so we’ve been instrumental in bringing it here so it’s convenient for citizens to come to city hall during the day or early evening and donate blood.” The fire department put a challenge out on Facebook to encourage city employees from other departments to donate blood. If you missed this week's collection, the Coon Rapids American Legion will be holding a blood drive on Tuesday, January 14 from 12:30-6:30 p.m.

Our nation relies on law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services to protect citizens when confronted with emergent and hostile events. Mass shootings such as those that occurred at Columbine High School; Virginia Tech University; Mumbai, India; and Aurora Movie Theatre in Colorado require first responders to incorporate methods and tactics that integrate operations and challenge first responders to collaborate and operate in a unified manner. This research examines how public safety agencies can effectively implement a first responder cross-disciplinary plan to better coordinate police, fire, and EMS responses. This study begins with a historical review of past incidents that demonstrate the need for cross-disciplinary teams. Next, new policies that support the use of cross-disciplinary teams are examined. Central to this research was an empirical study of the enablers and barriers to cross-disciplinary teams during a full-scale active shooter exercise. Illustrative findings among the participants in the exercise include a moderately high level of confidence in the concept and use of cross-disciplinary teams, the ability of various disciplines to trust each other s ability to work together, and the ability to communicate and share information. To establish and enhance the cross-disciplinary response, joint operational policies and procedures must be established.

Water mist fire suppression experiments were performed in cross-flow on bare (without outer jacket) communication cables to simulate a worst-case scenario. As fine water droplets are injected at low inlet velocities, an initial envelope flame that engulfed the circumference of the cable recedes and forms a wake flame stabilized behind the cable. At high mist concentration and/or high air velocity, the flame is extinguished by flame shrinking rather than by flame blow-off, as is the case in flat plate boundary layer flames. Ultra fine mist (UFM), with droplet diameter (d 3 micrometers), is more effective in reducing the extinguishment time than the high-pressure spray nozzle (d 20 micrometers), which introduces spray-induced turbulence. Extinguishment proceeds rapidly after a threshold concentration is exceeded, and the threshold concentration decreases with air velocity. Finally, the copper cylindrical mesh, which is part of the cable, significantly enhances the effectiveness of UFM in flame extinguishment.

The Future Combat System-Medical Variant (FCS-MV) vehicle offers self defense, sensor, communication, and medical capabilities that will make it the safest and most advanced medical evacuation vehicle in history. Unfortunately, much of these capabilities will have to be eliminated or severely limited under current Army policy which requires Army medical vehicles to display the red cross. The Army should reexamine its policy on marking medical vehicles in light of the advanced protection capabilities of the FCS-MV and the realities of fourth generation warfare. When the protections provided by the Geneva Convention if the red cross is displayed are compared to the protections a fully capable FCS-MV would have if it does not display the red cross, the answer is clear, the FCS-MV should be unmarked.

This research will be used to evaluate the feasibility of robotically, or remote-controlled firefighting nozzles aboard air-capable ships. A numerical model was constructed and analyzed, using the program CPD-ACS, of a fire hose stream being deflected by the influence of a crosswind, tailwind, or headwind. The model is intended to predict the reach of the fire hose stream, indicate the distribution pattern, and estimate the volume of fire fighting agent available at the end of the stream. Preliminary results for a two fluid cross flow model have been obtained.

Home fires are the greatest disaster threat to American families. Seven people die every day from home fires. A fire-related injury is reported every 40 minutes. Annually, home fires cause 2,500 deaths and roughly $7 billion in property damage. In our region alone, we respond to an average of three disaster per day, most of them home fires. The oldest example ever found of the swastika, ugunskrusts ("fire-cross") in Latvian, is 15,000 years old, carved in mammoth tusk, unearthed in Ukraine. The use of the swastika among the ancestors of the Latvians is surely as ancient because the Slavic and Baltic languages/cultures stem from a common Balto-Slavic proto-ancestor. The swastika appears in many versions in Latvian folk costumes and crafts. Indeed, there is no other culture in which it appears more ornately or in more variations. It is inseparably ingrained in Latvian identity. Different incarnations of the swastika cross symbolize different Latvian deities or aspects of life. The right-facing swastika: Pērkons ("Thunder", thus the "Thunder Cross"), left-facing: Laima ("Good Fortune"), while the multi-pronged Zars ("branch") denoted happiness; lastly, rounded, with narrowing and curved ends, Ķeksis ("hook") — however, we have not yet found documentation as to the significance of this version. In Latvian mythology, the fire-cross ultimately symbolizes the sun's (Saule) never-ending movement, defeating evil while promoting good health and good fortune.

Murad Gazdiev and his crew were cut in the cross fire in Aleppo Syria. thankfully they were not injured in the shelling by Al Nusra militants fighting in Aleppo. But this was not the fate of everyone many of the children and Syrian civilians weren't so fortunate.
