3NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19830010957: Analytical Investigation Of Critical MHD Phenomena

By

Development and analysis of schemes for suppression of the startup overvoltage transient in the AEDC High Performance Demonstration Experiment (HPDE), analysis of performance enhancement due to electrode voltage drop reduction by use of pyrolytic graphites in the HPDE, prediction of optimal loading schemes for the HPDE, prediction of PHDE performance with a diagonal electrical connection, and predictions of the likelihood and effects of axial current leakage between adjacent electrodes in the HPDE are reviewed. Simulations of tests at the AEDC/HPDE with STD Research Corporation multidimensional and time dependent computer codes provided additional validation for the computer codes and shed light on physical mechanisms which govern performance and durability of MHD power generators. The magnetoaerothermal effect was predicted by STD Research Corporation to have a significant effect on the HPDE/MHD generator performance at high interaction.

6Order-Parameter Correlation Functions In Quantum Critical Phenomena

By

We investigate the functional form of the order-parameter (two-point) correlation function in quantum critical phenomena. Contrary to the common lore, when there is no particle-hole symmetry we find that the equal-time correlation function at criticality does not display a diverging correlation length. We illustrate our conclusions by Monte Carlo calculations of the quantum rotor model in $d=2$ space dimensions

7NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19920014395: Near-critical Point Phenomena In Fluids (19-IML-1)

By

Understanding the effects of gravity is essential if the behavior of fluids is to be predicted in spacecraft and orbital stations, and, more generally, to give a better understanding of the hydrodynamics in these systems. An understanding is sought of the behavior of fluids in space. What should emerge from the International Microgravity Lab (IML-1) mission is a better understanding of the kinetics of growth in off-critical conditions, in both liquid mixtures and pure fluids. This complex phenomenon is the object of intensive study in physics and materials sciences area. It is also expected that the IML-1 flight will procure key results to provide a better understanding of how a pure fluid can be homogenized without gravity induced convections, and to what extent the 'Piston Effect' is effective in thermalizing the compressible fluids.

8The Microscopic Representation Of Complex Macroscopic Phenomena (Critical Slowing Down - A Blessing In Disguise)

By

Many complex systems are representable as macroscopic set of elements which interact by simple rules. The complex macroscopically relevant phenomena are then the result of the generic emergence of a space-time multi-scale dynamics. Critical Slowing Down labels the emerging global features and describes their complex collective evolution. This paradigm is quite universal and extends to a very wide range of systems and disciplines.

9Surface Critical Phenomena In Interaction-Round-a-Face Models

By

A general scheme has been proposed to study the critical behaviour of integrable interaction-round-a-face models with fixed boundary conditions. It has been shown that the boundary crossing symmetry plays an important role in determining the surface free energy. The surface specific heat exponent can thus be obtained without explicitly solving the reflection equations for the boundary face weights. For the restricted SOS $L$-state models of Andrews, Baxter and Forrester the surface specific heat exponent is found to be $\alpha_s=2-(L+1)/4$.

10The Chiral Phase Transition In QCD: Critical Phenomena And Long Wavelength Pion Oscillations

By

In QCD with two massless quarks, the chiral phase transition is plausibly in the same universality class as the classical O(4) magnet. To test this hypothesis, critical exponents characterizing the behaviour of universal quantities near the 2nd order critical point can be calculated and compared to results from lattice simulations. Present simulations already allow many qualitative tests; quantitative tests await future simulations with longer correlation lengths. In a heavy ion collision, a long correlation length would lead to large fluctuations in the number ratio of neutral to charged pions. Unfortunately, no equilibrium correlation length gets long enough for this to occur. Modelling the dynamics of the chiral order parameter in a far from equilibrium transition by quenching in the linear sigma model suggests that long wavelength modes of the pion field can be amplified. This could have dramatic phenomenological consequences. Theoretical advances include attempts to relax the quench approximation and to include expansion and quantum effects. Long wavelength pion oscillations arise in a number of theoretical treatments; however, all involve idealizations and are at best qualitative guides. It is up to experimentalists to determine whether such phenomena occur; detection in a heavy ion collision would imply an out of equilibrium chiral transition.

12Critical Phenomena Of Dynamical Delocalization In Quantum Anderson Map

By

Using a quantum map version of one-dimensional Anderson model, the localization-delocalization transition of quantum diffusion induced by coherent dynamical perturbation is investigated in comparison with quantum standard map. Existence of critical phenomena, which depends on the number of frequency component $M$, is demonstrated. Diffusion exponents agree with theoretical prediction for the transition, but the critical exponent of the localization length deviates from it with increase in the $M$. The critical power $\epsilon_c$ of the normalized perturbation at the transition point remarkably decreases as $\epsilon_c \sim (M-1)^{-1}$.

14New Dynamic Critical Phenomena In Nuclear And Quark Superfluids

By

We study the dynamic critical phenomena near the possible high-density QCD critical point inside the superfluid phase of nuclear and quark matter. We find that this critical point belongs to a new dynamic universality class beyond the conventional classification by Hohenberg and Halperin. We show that the speed of the superfluid phonon vanishes at the critical point and that the dynamic critical index is $z \approx 2$.

15Critical Phenomena In Heterogeneous K-core Percolation

By

$k$-core percolation is a percolation model which gives a notion of network functionality and has many applications in network science. In analysing the resilience of a network under random damage, an extension of this model is introduced, allowing different vertices to have their own degree of resilience. This extension is named heterogeneous $k$-core percolation and it is characterized by several interesting critical phenomena. Here we analytically investigate binary mixtures in a wide class of configuration model networks and categorize the different critical phenomena which may occur. We observe the presence of critical and tricritical points and give a general criterion for the occurrence of a tricritical point. The calculated critical exponents show cases in which the model belongs to the same universality class of facilitated spin models studied in the context of the glass transition.

16Introduction To Conformal Invariance And Its Applications To Critical Phenomena

By

This is an introduction to conformal invariance and two-dimensional critical phenomena for graduate students and condensed-matter physicists. After explaining the algebraic foundations of conformal invariance, numerical methods and their application to the Ising, Potts, Ashkin-Teller and XY models, tricritical behaviour, the Yang-Lee singularity and the XXZ chain are presented. Finite-size scaling techniques and their conformal extensions are treated in detail. The vicinity of the critical point is studied using the exact $S$-matrix approach, the truncation method, the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and asymptotic finite-size scaling functions. The integrability of the two-dimensional Ising model in a magnetic field is also dealt with. Finally, the extension of conformal invariance to surface critical phenomena is described and an outlook towards possible applications in critical dynamics is given.

17Critical Phenomena In Superlattices: Reentrant Dimensional Crossover And Anomalous Critical Amplitudes

By

A crossover from $d$ to $d-1$, and then back to $d$-dimensional critical behavior is argued to be a generic feature characterizing ordering in a $d$-dimensional superlattice composed of atomically {\em thick} films of two ferromagnets. The crossover leads to anomalous changes in the amplitudes of critical singularities. In $d=3$ Heisenberg and $XY$ superlattices large scale critical fluctuations persist over a wide temperature range.

18Gradient Critical Phenomena In The Ising Quantum Chain

By

We consider the behaviour of a critical system in the presence of a gradient perturbation of the couplings. In the direction of the gradient an interface region separates the ordered phase from the disordered one. We develop a scaling theory for the density profiles induced by the gradient perturbation which involves a characteristic length given by the width of the interface region. The scaling predictions are tested in the framework of the mean-field Ginzburg-Landau theory. Then we consider the Ising quantum chain in a linearly varying transverse field which corresponds to the extreme anisotropic limit of a classical two-dimensional Ising model. The quantum Hamiltonian can be diagonalized exactly in the scaling limit where the eigenvalue problem is the same as for the quantum harmonic oscillator. The energy density, the magnetization profile and the two-point correlation function are studied either analytically or by exact numerical calculations. Their scaling behaviour are in agreement with the predictions of the scaling theory.

19Phantom Black Holes And Critical Phenomena

By

We consider the two classes cosh and sinh of normal and phantom black holes of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. The thermodynamics of these holes is characterized by heat capacities that may have both signs depending on the parameters of the theory. Leaving aside the normal Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole, it is shown that only some phantom black holes of both classes exhibit critical phenomena. The two classes share a nonextremality, but special, critical point where the transition is continuous and the heat capacity, at constant charge, changes sign with an infinite discontinuity. This point yields a classification scheme for critical points. It is concluded that the two unstable and stable phases coexist on one side of the criticality state and disappear on the other side, that is, there is no configuration where only one phase exists. The sinh class has an extremality critical point where the entropy diverges. The transition from extremality to nonextremality with the charge held constant is accompanied by a loss of mass and an increase in the temperature. A special case of this transition is when the hole is isolated (microcanonical ensemble), it will evolve by emission of energy, which results in a decrease of its mass, to the final state of minimum mass and vanishing heat capacity. The Ehrenfest scheme of classification is inaccurate in this case but the generalized one due to Hilfer leads to conclude that the transition is of order less than unity. Fluctuations near criticality are also investigated.

In the symmetric phase of the Landau-Ginsburg model, noncommutativity is shown to give rise to a non-zero anomalous dimension at one loop, and to cause instability towards a new phase at large noncommutativity. In particular, in less than four dimensions, the one-loop critical exponent $\eta$ is non-vanishing at the Wilson-Fisher fixed point.

21Critical Phenomena: An Introduction From A Modern Perspective

By

Our aim in this set of lectures is to give an introduction to critical phenomena that emphasizes the emergence of and the role played by diverging length-scales. It is now accepted that renormalization group gives the basic understanding of these phenomena and so, instead of following the traditional historical trail, we try to develop the subject in a way that emphasizes the length-scale based approach.

22Critical Phenomena In Continuous Dimension

By

We present a calculation of critical phenomena directly in continuous dimension d employing an exact renormalization group equation for the effective average action. For an Ising-type scalar field theory we calculate the critical exponents nu(d) and eta(d) both from a lowest--order and a complete first--order derivative expansion of the effective average action. In particular, this can be used to study critical behavior as a function of dimensionality at fixed temperature.

23Disorder Induced Critical Phenomena In Magnetically Glassy Cu-Al-Mn Alloys

By

Measurements of magnetic hysteresis loops in Cu-Al-Mn alloys of different Mn content at low temperatures are presented. The loops are smooth and continuous above a certain temperature, but exhibit a magnetization discontinuity below that temperature. Scaling analysis suggest that this system displays a disorder induced phase transition line. Measurements allow to determine the critical exponents $\beta=0.03\pm 0.01$ and $\beta \delta = 0.4 \pm 0.1$ in agreement with those reported recently [Berger et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 85}, 4176 (2000)]

24A Numerical Investigation Of The Stability Of Steady States And Critical Phenomena For The Spherically Symmetric Einstein-Vlasov System

By

The stability features of steady states of the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system are investigated numerically. We find support for the conjecture by Zeldovich and Novikov that the binding energy maximum along a steady state sequence signals the onset of instability, a conjecture which we extend to and confirm for non-isotropic states. The sign of the binding energy of a solution turns out to be relevant for its time evolution in general. We relate the stability properties to the question of universality in critical collapse and find that for Vlasov matter universality does not seem to hold.

27Core Percolation In Random Graphs: A Critical Phenomena Analysis

By

We study both numerically and analytically what happens to a random graph of average connectivity "alpha" when its leaves and their neighbors are removed iteratively up to the point when no leaf remains. The remnant is made of isolated vertices plus an induced subgraph we call the "core". In the thermodynamic limit of an infinite random graph, we compute analytically the dynamics of leaf removal, the number of isolated vertices and the number of vertices and edges in the core. We show that a second order phase transition occurs at "alpha = e = 2.718...": below the transition, the core is small but above the transition, it occupies a finite fraction of the initial graph. The finite size scaling properties are then studied numerically in detail in the critical region, and we propose a consistent set of critical exponents, which does not coincide with the set of standard percolation exponents for this model. We clarify several aspects in combinatorial optimization and spectral properties of the adjacency matrix of random graphs. Key words: random graphs, leaf removal, core percolation, critical exponents, combinatorial optimization, finite size scaling, Monte-Carlo.

A physical basis is established whereby external electromagnetic fields can interact with biological membranes. The mechanism discussed, based on the membrane residing in a thermodynamic state near critical point, can accommodate very low field strengths. Numerical estimates of field strengths required to drive the membrane system close enough to a critical point, assuming it does not initially reside there, are presented. 31Ubiquity Of Unconventional Phenomena Associated With Critical Valence Fluctuations In Heavy Fermion Metals

By

Ubiquity of unconventional phenomena observed in a series of heavy fermion metals is discussed on the basis of an idea of critical valence fluctuations. After surveying experimental aspects of these unconventional behaviors in prototypical compounds, CeCu_2(Si,Ge)_2, under pressure, we propose that sharp valence crossover phenomena are realized in CeCu_6, CeRhIn_5, and Ce(Ir,Rh)Si_3 by tuning the pressure and the magnetic field simultaneously, on the basis of previous results for an extended Anderson lattice model with the Coulomb repulsion U_fc between localized f-electron and itinerant conduction electrons.

32Elements Of Phase Transitions And Critical Phenomena

Phase transitions and critical phenomena have consistently been among the principal subjects of active studies in statistical physics. The simple act of transforming one state of matter or phase into another, for instance by changing the temperature, has always captivated the curious mind. This book provides an introductory account on the theory of phase transitions and critical phenomena, a subject now recognized to be indispensable for students and researchers from many fields of physics and related disciplines. The first five chapters are very basic and quintessential, and cover standard topics such as mean-field theories, the renormalization group and scaling, universality, and statistical field theory methods. The remaining chapters develop more advanced concepts, including conformal field theory, the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, the effects of randomness, percolation, exactly solvable models, series expansions, duality transformations, and numerical techniques. Moreover, a comprehensive series of appendices expand and clarify several issues not developed in the main text. The important role played by symmetry and topology in understanding the competition between phases and the resulting emergent collective behaviour, giving rise to rigidity and soft elementary excitations, is stressed throughout the book. Serious attempts have been directed toward a self-contained modular approach so that the reader does not have to refer to other sources for supplementary information. Accordingly, most of the concepts and calculations are described in detail, sometimes with additional/auxiliary descriptions given in appendices and exercises. The latter are presented as the topics develop with solutions found at the end of the book, thus giving the text a self-learning character.

34Critical Phenomena In Colloid-polymer Mixtures: Interfacial Tension, Order Parameter, Susceptibility And Coexistence Diameter

By

The critical behavior of a model colloid-polymer mixture, the so-called AO model, is studied using computer simulations and finite size scaling techniques. Investigated are the interfacial tension, the order parameter, the susceptibility and the coexistence diameter. Our results clearly show that the interfacial tension vanishes at the critical point with exponent 2\nu ~ 1.26. This is in good agreement with the 3D Ising exponent. Also calculated are critical amplitude ratios, which are shown to be compatible with the corresponding 3D Ising values. We additionally identify a number of subtleties that are encountered when finite size scaling is applied to the AO model. In particular, we find that the finite size extrapolation of the interfacial tension is most consistent when logarithmic size dependences are ignored. This finding is in agreement with the work of Berg et al.[Phys. Rev. B, V47 P497 (1993)]

36Fluctuation-Dissipative Phenomena In A Narrow Superconducting Channel Carrying Current Below Critical

By

The theory of current transport in a narrow superconducting channel accounting for thermal fluctuations is developed. These fluctuations result in the appearance of small but finite dissipation in the sample. The value of corresponding voltage is found as the function of temperature (close to transition temperature) and arbitrary bias current. It is demonstrated that the value of the activation energy (exponential factor in the Arrenius law) when current approaches to the critical one is proportional to (1-J/Jc)^(5/4). This result is in concordance with the one for the affine phenomenon of the Josephson current decay due to the thermal phase fluctuations, where the activation energy proportional (1-J/J_c)^(3/2)(the difference in the exponents is related to the additional current dependence of the order parameter). Found dependence of the activation energy on current explains the enormous discrepancy between the theoretically predicted before and the experimentally observed broadening of the resistive transition.

37Effect Of The Short-range Interaction On Critical Phenomena In Elastic Interaction Systems

By

The elastic interaction, induced by the lattice distortion due to the difference of the molecular size, causes an effective long-range interaction. In spin-crossover (SC) compounds, local bistable states, i.e., high-spin and low-spin states have different molecular sizes, and the elastic interaction is important. In bipartite lattices, e.g., the square lattice, the ground state can be two types of phases: ferromagnetic-like (FM) and antiferromagnetic-like (AFM) phases. In systems like SC compounds, the former phase consists of all small or large molecules, and the latter phase has the configuration of alternating small and large molecules. In fact, both cases are observed in SC systems. In this paper, we have studied the effect of the short-range interaction in the elastic system on the properties of those order-disorder phase transitions. We have obtained a phase diagram in the coordinates of the temperature and the strength of the short-range interaction, including the metastable structures. We show that effects of the short-range interaction are essentially different for FM and AFM phase transitions. In the FM transition, the long-range interaction of elasticity is relevant, and the system exhibits a phase transition in the mean-filed universality class. In this case, the long-range interaction strongly enhances the FM order, and it works cooperatively with the short-range interaction. In contrast, in the AFM transition, the elastic interaction slightly enhances the AFM order, but essentially it does not contribute to the ordering, and the system shows a transition in the Ising universality class. We have found that in the border region between FM and AFM phases, the AFM phase has an advantage at finite temperatures. We discuss the critical properties of two-step SC transitions with comparison between the elastic interaction model and conventional SC models (Ising-like models).

38NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19770011439: Concepts And Methods For Describing Critical Phenomena In Fluids

By

The predictions of theoretical models for a critical-point phase transistion in fluids, namely the classical equation with third-degree critical isotherm, that with fifth-degree critical isotherm, and the lattice gas, are reviewed. The renormalization group theory of critical phenomena and the hypothesis of universality of critical behavior supported by this theory are discussed as well as the nature of gravity effects and how they affect cricital-region experimentation in fluids. The behavior of the thermodynamic properties and the correlation function is formulated in terms of scaling laws. The predictions of these scaling laws and of the hypothesis of universality of critical behavior are compared with experimental data for one-component fluids and it is indicated how the methods can be extended to describe critical phenomena in fluid mixtures.

39Perturbation Theory Methods Applied To Critical Phenomena

By

Different perturbation theory treatments of the Ginzburg-Landau phase transition model are discussed. This includes a criticism of the perturbative renormalization group (RG) approach and a proposal of a novel method providing critical exponents consistent with the known exact solutions in two dimensions. The new values of critical exponents are discussed and compared to the results of numerical simulations and experiments.

40Dynamical Critical Phenomena And Large Scale Structure Of The Universe: The Power Spectrum For Density Fluctuations

By

As is well known, structure formation in the Universe at times after decoupling can be described by hydrodynamic equations. These are shown here to be equivalent to a generalization of the stochastic Kardar--Parisi--Zhang equation with time-- dependent viscosity in epochs of dissipation. As a consequence of the Dynamical Critical Scaling induced by noise and fluctuations, these equations describe the fractal behavior (with a scale dependent fractal dimension) observed at the smaller scales for the galaxy--to--galaxy correlation function and $also$ the Harrison--Zel'dovich spectrum at decoupling. By a Renormalization Group calculation of the two--point correlation function between galaxies in the presence of (i) the expansion of the Universe and (ii) non--equilibrium, we can account, from first principles, for the main features of the observed shape of the power spectrum.

41Critical Phenomena And Phase Sequence In Classical Bilayer Wigner Crystal At Zero Temperature

By

We study the ground-state properties of a system of identical classical Coulombic point particles, evenly distributed between two equivalently charged parallel plates at distance $d$; the system as a whole is electroneutral. It was previously shown that upon increasing d from 0 to infinity, five different structures of the bilayer Wigner crystal become energetically favored, starting from a hexagonal lattice (phase I, d=0) and ending at a staggered hexagonal lattice (phase V, d -> infinity). In this paper, we derive new series representations of the ground-state energy for all five bilayer structures. The derivation is based on a sequence of transformations for lattice sums of Coulomb two-particle potentials plus the neutralizing background, having their origin in the general theory of Jacobi theta functions. The new series provide convenient starting points for both analytical and numerical progress. Its convergence properties are indeed excellent: Truncation at the fourth term determines in general the energy correctly up to 17 decimal digits. The accurate series representations are used to improve the specification of transition points between the phases and to solve a controversy in previous studies. In particular, it is shown both analytically and numerically that the hexagonal phase I is stable only at d=0, and not in a finite interval of small distances between the plates as was anticipated before. The expansions of the structure energies around second-order transition points can be done analytically, which enables us to show that the critical behavior is of the Ginzburg-Landau type, with a mean-field critical index beta=1/2 for the growth of the order parameters.

43An Alternative Perspective To Observe The Critical Phenomena Of Dilaton AdS Black Holes

By

The critical phenomena of dilaton AdS black holes are probed from a totally different perspective other than the $P-v$ criticality and the $q-U$ criticality discussed in the former literature. We investigate not only the two point correlation function but also the entanglement entropy of dilaton AdS black holes. We achieve this goal by solving the equation of motion constrained by the boundary condition numerically and we concentrate on $\delta L$ and $\delta S$ which have been regularized by subtracting the terms in pure AdS with the same boundary region. For both the two point correlation function and the entanglement entropy, we consider $4\times2\times2=16$ cases due to different choices of parameters. The van der Waals like behavior can be clearly witnessed from all the $T-\delta L$ ($T-\delta S$) graphs for $q

44Critical Phenomena Of Ferromagnetic Transition In Double-Exchange Systems

By

Critical phenomena of ferromagnetic transition at finite temperatures are studied in double-exchange systems. In order to investigate strong interplay between charge and spin degrees of freedom, Monte Carlo technique is applied to include fluctuations in a controlled and unbiased manner. By using finite-size scaling analysis, critical exponents and transition temperature are estimated for a model with Ising spin symmetry in two dimensions. The obtained exponents are far distinct from the mean-field values, but consistent with those of spin models with short-range exchange interactions. The universality class of this transition belongs to that of short-range interaction with the same spin symmetry. We also discuss the case for three dimensions. The results are compared with experimental results in perovskite manganites which show colossal magnetoresistance.

45Directed Polymer Blends And Quantum Critical Phenomena

By

The statistical mechanics of directed line-like objects, such as directed polymers in an external field, strands of dipoles in both ferro- and electrorheological fluids, and flux lines in high-$T_{\tiny C}$ superconductors bears a close resemblance to the quantum mechanics of bosons in $2+1$ dimensions. We show that single component and binary mixture critical phenomena in these systems are in the universality class of three dimensional uniaxial dipolar ferromagnets and ferroelectrics. Our results also apply to films of two superfluid species undergoing phase separation well below their $\lambda$-points near $T=0$. In the case of directed polymers and electrorheological fluids we analyze the effects of free ends occurring in the sample as well as a novel directionally-dependent compressibility.

46Quantum Critical Phenomena Of Long-range Interacting Bosons In A Time-dependent Random Potential

By

We study the superfluid-insulator transition of a particle-hole symmetric system of long-range interacting bosons in a time-dependent random potential in two dimensions, using the momentum-shell renormalization-group method. We find a new stable fixed point with non-zero values of the parameters representing the short- and long-range interactions and disorder when the interaction is asymptotically logarithmic. This is contrasted to the non-random case with a logarithmic interaction, where the transition is argued to be first-order, and to the $1/r$ Coulomb interaction case, where either a first-order transition or an XY-like transition is possible depending on the parameters. We propose that our model may be relevant in studying the vortex liquid-vortex glass transition of interacting vortex lines in point-disordered type-II superconductors.

47Concentration Phenomena For Fractional Elliptic Equations Involving Exponential Critical Growth

By

In this paper, we deal with the following singular perturbed fractional elliptic problem $ \epsilon^{} (-\Delta)^{1/2}{u}+V(z)u=f(u)\,\,\, \mbox{in} \,\,\, \mathbb{R}, $ where $ (-\Delta)^{1/2}u$ is the square root of the Laplacian and $f(s)$ has exponential critical growth. Under suitable conditions on $f(s)$, we construct a localized bound state solution concentrating at an isolated component of the positive local minimum points of the potential of $V$ as $\epsilon$ goes to $0.$

48NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19950008165: Surfactant-based Critical Phenomena In Microgravity

By

The objective of this research project is to characterize by experiment and theoretically both the kinetics of phase separation and the metastable structures produced during phase separation in a microgravity environment. The particular systems we are currently studying are mixtures of water, nonionic surfactants, and compressible supercritical fluids at temperatures and pressures where the coexisting liquid phases have equal densities (isopycnic phases). In this report, we describe experiments to locate equilibrium isopycnic phases and to determine the 'local' phase behavior and critical phenomena at nearby conditions of temperature, pressure, and composition. In addition, we report the results of preliminary small angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments to characterize microstructures that exist in these mixtures at different fluid densities.

49NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19770006147: Spacelab Experiment Definition Study On Phase Transition And Critical Phenomena In Fluids: Interim Report On Experimental Justification

By

Pure fluids and fluid mixtures near critical points are identified and are related to the progress of several disciplines. Consideration is given to thermodynamic properties, transport properties, and the complex nonlinear phenomena which occur when fluids undergo phase transitions in the critical region. The distinction is made between practical limits which may be extended by advances in technology and intrinsic ones which arise from the modification of fluid properties by the earth's gravitational field. The kinds of experiments near critical points which could best exploit the low gravity environment of an orbiting laboratory are identified. These include studies of the index of refraction, constant volume specific heat, and phase separation.
