As demographics shift and immigration is a hotly contested area of US civic life, the civic preparation and participation of Latin American immigrant youth is becoming increasingly important. The author examines the growing literature on this topic, inquiring into the political and demographic changes that have stimulated this area of inquiry, the challenges of studying this population, and what individuals currently know and what they still need to know about immigrant youth civic engagement and activism. At a time when the struggle for immigrant rights in the US is caught in the crossfire of severe recession and racism, young immigrant activists offer a ray of hope through their modest yet noteworthy successes. Scholarship on their civic engagement sheds light on ways that young people who live on the fault line between nation-states are creatively forging civic identities, claiming political voices, and making an impact. (Contains 144 footnotes.) The novel traces the conflict and angst the characters in the novel experience as they make fine negotiations between the two worlds, the traditional and the modern and how these characters change in this process balancing the old treasured beliefs and surprising new desires. This Research paper aims at studying the varied aspects of identity crisis, hegemony, patriarchy etc in the Eastern as well as Western context.

This paper chronicles a process of structural change in the College of Education at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Data for the study were derived from interviews with 40 of the participants, plus archival material collected from the college planning office. The paper summarizes some of the historical context surrounding the change and then follows the process from its inception in the fall of 1990, through the work of the study groups and presentation of the planning document, to implementation of the plan, and finally to a review process in the academic year 1993-1994. The human side of these changes is highlighted by personal accounts of several participants, which document contributions to professional and personal growth; the problems, disappointments, and hard times encountered; and the differing perspectives of the participants. Some of the lessons drawn from the experiences show that restructuring efforts need to be understood within particular historical and cultural contexts; that human needs cannot be discounted; and that change and reform are difficult within the university structure. Appendixes include a copy of the proposed implementation procedures; a schematic diagram showing the transition of departments into units; an organization chart for the proposed "new" college of education; and a brief description of the methodology. In their call for proposals for this themed issue, the editors maintain that higher education institutions should graduate future P-12 teachers who think globally, have international experience, demonstrate foreign language competence, and are able to incorporate a global dimension into their teaching. In contrast, the authors argue that future educators should be inclusive educators who use teaching strategies that are inclusive of all students, think globally, and include global dimensions in their teaching. Inclusive educators honor the diverse cultural, linguistic, physical, mental, and cognitive complexities of their students. They argue that a focus on teaching for social justice is where global education, special education, and disability studies converge. They assert that this begins with teaching respect for those who are different within one's own environment--tolerance from the inside out, and they believe that it is only when convergence among global education, special education, and disability studies is forged that true respect may emerge. Students must experience tolerance in their own lives in order to teach respect. To do this, teachers must both model tolerance and respect and give students real opportunities to be in what Schon (1990) calls the "murky swamp" of decision making in which they examine their own beliefs and choose respect as the best action. In this paper, they examine the questions: who are the teachers and students? What are their images of diversity? Then they describe the convergence of global education, inclusive education, and disability studies. Next they explore what it means to teach for social justice. From this stance, they describe several teaching strategies that teacher educators can use for creating permeable boundaries. (Contains 1 figure.)

This paper argues for a radical restructuring of education for grades 11-14--by erasing the arbitrary dividing line between high school and college--to open opportunities for the learners the current systems leave behind. The authors make the case for an entirely new type of institution--neither high school nor college--designed specifically to better meet the needs of young people after 10th grade and help prepare them to succeed in the world of work. The authors take a hard look at the obstacles that impede more than half of the nation's young people from making successful transitions from high school to postsecondary education to the labor market despite the best of intentions of the many who support them. They identify the four key areas that need transformation: (1) incentives (in accountability and finance); (2) alignment; (3) governance; and (4) staffing. For each, the authors provide examples of innovation--existing policies, programs, and networks--that have made strides toward smoothing transitions.
