6Variable G And $Λ$: Scalar-tensor Versus RG-improved Cosmology

By

We study the consequences due to time varying $G$ and $\Lambda$ in scalar-tensor theories of gravity for cosmology, inspired by the modifications introduced by the Renormalization Group (RG) equations in the Quantum Einstein Gravity. We assume a power-law scale factor in presence contemporarily of both the scalar field and the matter components of the cosmic fluid, and analyze a special case and its generalization, also showing the possibility of a phantom cosmology. In both such situations we find a negative kinetic term for the scalar field $Q$ and, possibly, an equation-of-state parameter $w_Q

7Introduction To Cosmology

By

These notes form an introduction to cosmology with special emphasis on large scale structure, the cmb anisotropy and inflation. In some places a basic familiarity with particle physics is assumed, but otherwise no special knowledge is needed. Most of the material in the first two sections can be found in several texts, except that the discussion of dark matter and the cosmological constant is more up to date. Most of that in the remaining sections can be found in a review of structure formation and inflation done with Andrew Liddle, which describes original work by various authors including ourselves and Ewan Stewart. The reader is referred to these works for more detail, and a very complete list of references.

8Numerical Black Hole Interiors And String Cosmology Initial Conditions

By

Recent work has proposed the principle of `asymptotic past triviality' to characterize the initial state in the pre-big bang scenario of string cosmology, that it is a generic perturbative solution of the low-energy effective action. Among the more generic sets of solutions which is simple enough to investigate thoroughly, yet complex enough to exhibit interesting behavior, is the gravity-dilaton system in spherical symmetry. Since, in the Einstein frame, this system reduces to a massless minimally coupled scalar, which has been target of a large body of previous investigation, we will draw on this and interpret it in the cosmological context. Since this scenario necessarily involves the transition from weak field initial data into the strong field regime, gravitational collapse, we have made numerical computations to answer some of the questions raised on the road to the proposal that `the pre-big bang is as generic as gravitational collapse'.

10Cosmology With The SKA -- Overview

By

The new frontier of cosmology will be led by three-dimensional surveys of the large-scale structure of the Universe. Based on its all-sky surveys and redshift depth, the SKA is destined to revolutionize cosmology, in combination with future optical/ infrared surveys such as Euclid and LSST. Furthermore, we will not have to wait for the full deployment of the SKA in order to see transformational science. In the first phase of deployment (SKA1), all-sky HI intensity mapping surveys and all-sky continuum surveys are forecast to be at the forefront on the major questions of cosmology. We give a broad overview of the major contributions predicted for the SKA. The SKA will not only deliver precision cosmology -- it will also probe the foundations of the standard model and open the door to new discoveries on large-scale features of the Universe.

11Dark Matter Relic Density In Gauss-Bonnet Braneworld Cosmology

By

The relic density of symmetric and asymmetric dark matter in a Gauss-Bonnet (GB) modified Randall-Sundrum (RS) type II braneworld cosmology is investigated. The existing study of symmetric dark matter in a GB braneworld (Okada and Okada, 2009) found that the expansion rate was reduced compared to that in standard General Relativity (GR), thereby delaying particle freeze-out and resulting in relic abundances which are suppressed by up to $\mathcal{O}(10^{-2})$. This is in direct contrast to the behaviour observed in RS braneworlds where the expansion rate is enhanced and the final relic abundance boosted. However, this finding that relic abundances are suppressed in a GB braneworld is based upon a highly contrived situation in which the GB era evolves directly into a standard GR era, rather than passing through a RS era as is the general situation. This collapse of the RS era requires equating the mass scale $m_{\alpha}$ of the GB modification and the mass scale $m_{\sigma}$ of the brane tension. However, if the GB contribution is to be considered as the lowest order correction from string theory to the RS action, we would expect $m_{\alpha} > m_{\sigma}$. We investigate the effect upon the relic abundance of choosing more realistic values for the ratio $\mathcal{R}_{m} \equiv m_{\alpha}/m_{\sigma}$ and find that the relic abundance can be either enhanced or suppressed by more than two orders of magnitude. However, suppression only occurs for a small range of parameter choices and, overwhelmingly, the predominant situation is that of enhancement as we recover the usual Randall-Sundrum type behaviour in the limit $\mathcal{R}_m \gg 1$. We use the latest observational bound $\Omega_{DM}h^2 = 0.1187 \pm 0.0017$ to constrain the various model parameters and briefly discuss the implications for direct/indirect dark matter detection experiments as well as dark matter particle models.

12Symmetry Reduction In Twisted Noncommutative Gravity With Applications To Cosmology And Black Holes

By

As a preparation for a mathematically consistent study of the physics of symmetric spacetimes in a noncommutative setting, we study symmetry reductions in deformed gravity. We focus on deformations that are given by a twist of a Lie algebra acting on the spacetime manifold. We derive conditions on those twists that allow a given symmetry reduction. A complete classification of admissible deformations is possible in a class of twists generated by commuting vector fields. As examples, we explicitly construct the families of vector fields that generate twists which are compatible with Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies and Schwarzschild black holes, respectively. We find nontrivial isotropic twists of FRW cosmologies and nontrivial twists that are compatible with all classical symmetries of black hole solutions.

13A One Parameter Family Of Expanding Wave Solutions Of The Einstein Equations That Induces An Anomalous Acceleration Into The Standard Model Of Cosmology

By

We derive a new set of equations which describe a continuous one parameter family of expanding wave solutions of the Einstein equations such that the Friedmann universe associated with the pure radiation phase of the Standard Model of Cosmology, is embedded as a single point in this family. All of the spacetime metrics associated with this family satisfy the equation of state $p=\rho c^2/3$, correct for the pure radiation phase after inflation in the Standard Model of the Big Bang. By expanding solutions about the center to leading order in the Hubble length, the family reduces to a one-parameter family of expanding spacetimes that represent a perturbation of the Standard Model. We then derive a co-moving coordinate system in which the perturbed spacetimes can be compared with the Standard Model. In this coordinate system we calculate the correction to the Hubble constant, as well as the exact leading order quadratic correction to the redshift vs luminosity relation for an observer at the center of the expanding FRW spacetime. The leading order correction to the redshift vs luminosity relation entails an adjustable free parameter that introduces an anomalous acceleration. We conclude that any correction to the redshift vs luminosity relation observed after the radiation phase of the Big Bang can be accounted for, at the leading order quadratic level, by adjustment of this free parameter. Since exact non-interacting expanding waves represent possible time-asymptotic wave patterns for conservation laws, we propose to further investigate the possibility that these corrections to the Standard Model might account for the anomalous acceleration of the galaxies, without the introduction of the cosmological constant.

15The Emergent Nature Of Time And The Complex Numbers In Quantum Cosmology

By

The nature of time in quantum mechanics is closely related to the use of a complex, rather than say real, Hilbert space. This becomes particularly clear when considering quantum field theory in time dependent backgrounds, such as in cosmology, when the notion of positive frequency ceases to be well defined. In spacetimes lacking time orientation, i.e without the possibility of defining an arrow of time, one is forced to abandon complex quantum mechanics. One also has to face this problem in quantum cosmology. I use this to argue that this suggests that, at a fundamental level, quantum mechanics may be really real with not one, but a multitude of complex structures. I relate these ideas to other suggestions that in quantum gravity time evolution may not be unitary, possibly implemented by a super-scattering matrix, and the status of CPT.

16Classical Setting And Effective Dynamics For Spinfoam Cosmology

By

We explore how to extract effective dynamics from loop quantum gravity and spinfoams truncated to a finite fixed graph, with the hope of modeling symmetry-reduced gravitational systems. We particularize our study to the 2-vertex graph with N links. We describe the canonical data using the recent formulation of the phase space in terms of spinors, and implement a symmetry-reduction to the homogeneous and isotropic sector. From the canonical point of view, we construct a consistent Hamiltonian for the model and discuss its relation with Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies. Then, we analyze the dynamics from the spinfoam approach. We compute exactly the transition amplitude between initial and final coherent spin networks states with support on the 2-vertex graph, for the choice of the simplest two-complex (with a single space-time vertex). The transition amplitude verifies an exact differential equation that agrees with the Hamiltonian constructed previously. Thus, in our simple setting we clarify the link between the canonical and the covariant formalisms.

17Is Dark Matter With Long-range Interactions A Solution To All Small-scale Problems Of ΛCDM Cosmology?

By

The cold dark matter (DM) paradigm describes the large-scale structure of the universe remarkably well. However, there exists some tension with the observed abundances and internal density structures of both field dwarf galaxies and galactic satellites. Here, we demonstrate that a simple class of DM models may offer a viable solution to all of these problems simultaneously. Their key phenomenological properties are velocity-dependent self-interactions mediated by a light vector messenger and thermal production with much later kinetic decoupling than in the standard case.

18Foundations Of Supernova Cosmology

By

This is a brief sketch of the use of supernovae to measure cosmological parameters. It traces the early work, the events surrounding the discovery and verification of cosmic acceleration using SN Ia, and the efforts today to make sound inferences about the nature of dark energy. The prospects for minimizing systematics by using near-infrared observations in the supernova restframe are emphasized. This could be an important point in the design of a JDEM that employs supernovae to measure the history of cosmic expansion.

19The Universe-Inversum Paradigm: A Speculative Framework For Cyclical Cosmology And Negative Energy States

By

This document introduces the Universe-Inversum Paradigm , a speculative cosmological model that proposes a dual-entity universe governed by cyclical entropy-extropy dynamics. Building on theoretical physics and mathematical rigor, the framework explores: Negative Energy and Mass : A zero-sum energy system balancing the Universe’s positive energy with the Inversum’s negative counterpart. Entropy-Extropy Duality : A novel thermodynamic pairing that drives the oscillatory transitions between expansion (entropy-dominated) and contraction (extropy-dominated). Geometric Coupling and Scalar Field Dynamics : Mechanisms that link spacetime curvature to thermodynamic cycles, providing a theoretical basis for the interplay between gravity, energy, and order. By addressing key cosmological puzzles, such as dark energy and the entropy paradox, this paradigm invites discussion, critique, and exploration of its implications for modern cosmology. 23On The Superstrings-induced Four-dimensional Gravity, And Its Applications To Cosmology

By

We review the status of the fourth-order (quartic in the spacetime curvature) terms induced by superstrings/M-theory (compactified on a warped torus) in the leading order with respect to the Regge slope parameter, and study their (non-perturbative) impact on the evolution of the Hubble scale in the context of the four-dimensional FRW cosmology. After taking into account the quantum ambiguities in the definition of the off-shell superstring effective action, we propose the generalized Friedmann equations, find the existence of their (de Sitter) exact inflationary solutions without a spacetime singularity, and constrain the ambiguities by demanding stability and the scale factor duality invariance of our solutions. The most naive (Bel-Robinson tensor squared) quartic terms are ruled out, thus giving the evidence for the necessity of extra quartic (Ricci tensor-dependent) terms in the off-shell gravitational effective action for superstrings. Our methods are generalizable to the higher orders in the spacetime curvature.

25Open Inflationary Universes In Gauss-Bonnet Brane Cosmology

In this article, we study a type of one-field approach for open inflationary universe scenario in the context of braneworld models with a Gauss-Bonnet correction term. For a one-bubble universe model, we determine and characterize the existence of the Coleman-De Lucia instanton together with the period of inflation after tunneling has occurred. Our results are compared those analogous obtained when the usual Einstein Theory of Gravitation is used.

26Interpretation Of The Triad Orientations In Loop Quantum Cosmology

By

Loop quantum cosmology allows for arbitrary superpositions of the triad variable. We show here how these superpositions can become indistinguishable from a classical mixture by the interaction with fermions. We calculate the reduced density matrix for a locally rotationally symmetric Bianchi I model and show that the purity factor for the triads decreases by decoherence. In this way, the universe assumes a definite orientation.

We study evolution of cosmological models filled with the scalar field and barotropic matter. We consider the scalar field minimally and non-minimally coupled to gravity. We demonstrated the growth of degree of complexity of evolutional scenario through the description of matter content in terms of the scalar field. In study of all evolutional paths for all initial conditions methods of dynamical systems are used. Using linearized solutions we present simple method of derivation corresponding form of the Hubble function of the scale factor $H(a)$.

28Holographic Cosmology From BIonic Solutions

By

In this paper, we will use a BIonic solution for analyzing the holographic cosmology. A BIonic solution is a configuration of a D3-brane and an anti-D3-brane connected by a wormhole, and holographic cosmology is a recent proposal to explain cosmic expansion by using the holographic principle. In our model, a BIonic configuration will be produced by the transition of fundamental black strings. The formation of a BIonic configuration will cause inflation. As the D3-brane moves away from the anti-D3-brane, The wormhole will get annihilated, and the inflation will end with the annihilation of this wormhole. However, it is possible for a D3-brane to collide with an anti-D3-brane. Such a collision will occur if the distance between the D3-brane and the anti-D3-brane reduces, and this will create tachyonic states. We will demonstrate that these tachyonic states will lead to the formation of a new wormhole, and this will cause acceleration of the universe before such a collision.

29Observational Constraints On Galileon Cosmology

By

We study the cosmology of a covariant Galileon field with five covariant Lagrangians and confront this theory with the most recent cosmological probes: the type Ia supernovae data (Constitution and Union2 sets), cosmic microwave background (WMAP7) and the baryon acoustic oscillations (SDSS7). In the Galileon cosmology with a late-time de Sitter attractor, there is a tracker that attracts solutions with different initial conditions to a common trajectory. Including the cosmic curvature K, we place observational constraints on two distinct cases: (i) the tracker, and (ii) the generic solutions to the equations of motion. We find that the tracker solution can be consistent with the individual observational data, but it is disfavored by the combined data analysis. The generic solutions fare quite well when a non-zero curvature parameter is taken into account, but the Akaike and Bayesian information criteria show that they are not particularly favored over the LCDM model.

30Dark Energy Interacting With Dark Matter In Classical Einstein And Loop Quantum Cosmology

By

The cosmological model of dark energy interacting with cold dark matter without coupling to the baryonic matter, is studied in the background of both classical Einstein and loop quantum cosmology. We consider two types of interacting models. In the former model, the interaction is a linear combination of the densities of two dark sectors, while in the latter model, the interaction with a constant transfer rate depends only on the density of cold dark matter. It is shown that the dynamical results in loop quantum cosmology are different from those in classical Einstein cosmology for both two kinds of interacting models. Moreover, the form of the interaction affects significantly the dynamical results in both kinds of cosmology.

31Gauge/Cosmology Brane-to-Brane Duality

By

We introduce a duality relation between two distinct branes, a cosmological brane with macroscopic matter and a holographic brane with microscopic gauge fields. Using brane-world cosmology with a single brane in a 5-dimensional AdS5 background, we find an explicit time-dependent holographic correspondence between the bulk metric surrounding the cosmological brane and the N=4 gauge field theory living on the boundary of the Z2-symmetric mirror bulk, identified with the holographic brane. We then relate the cosmic acceleration on the cosmological brane to the conformal anomaly of the gauge theory on the holographic brane. This leads to a dual microscopic interpretation of the number of e-foldings of the cosmological eras on the cosmological brane.

33Quantum Cosmology And The Structure Of Inflationary Universe

By

In this review I consider several different issues related to inflation. I will begin with the wave function of the Universe. This issue is pretty old, but recently there were some new insights based on the theory of the self-reproducing inflationary universe. Then we will discuss stationarity of inflationary universe and the possibility to make predictions in the context of quantum cosmology using stochastic approach to inflation. Returning to more pragmatic aspects of inflationary theory, we will discuss inflationary models with $\Omega < 1$. Finally, we will describe several aspects of the theory of reheating of the Universe based on the effect of parametric resonance.

34Scale Factor Duality And Hidden Supersymmetry In Scalar--Tensor Cosmology

By

It is shown that spatially flat, isotropic cosmologies derived from the Brans--Dicke gravity action exhibit a scale factor duality invariance. This classical duality is then associated with a hidden $N=2$ supersymmetry at the quantum level and the supersymmetric quantum constraints are solved exactly. These symmetries also apply to a dimensionally reduced version of vacuum Einstein gravity.

36PREVIEW: Minkowski’s Foundations Of Spacetime Physics And SDSS Data Motivate Reassessment Of ΛCDM Cosmology

By

The objective, statistical nature of SDSS astrophysical datasets, which were not driven by any theoretical agenda, reveal false and misleading prior measurements (e.g., redshift-distance) driven by confirmation bias in the context of such agendas. SDSS data, including theta-z, redshift-magnitude (both photometric and spectroscopic pipelines), and galaxy population-density, are shown to conflict with the ΛCDM standard cosmological model. Moreover, all four of those distinct and independent data sets are similarly consistent with a new cosmological model that revives de Sitter’s 1917 exact solution to the field equations, long thought to entail an “empty universe.” Representing a paradigm shift in cosmology, that new model is entirely distinct from the textbook “de Sitter universe” model. It derives from considerations of symmetry and local proper time modeled as a geometric object, motivated by Minkowski’s metric characterization of relativity. All of the new predictive equations, which incorporate no free parameters, are confronted with corresponding SDSS data sets, thereby resolving the modern quandary of astrophysical observables interpreted as accelerating cosmic expansion induced by ‘dark energy.’ The canonical idea of a non-relativistic universal time coordinate applicable to all of cosmological space and its energy content (i.e., ∼13.7 Gyr of ‘Cosmic Time’ from initial singularity) is supplanted by a relativistic, strictly-local time coordinate involving no such inscrutable space-time singularity.

38Gamma-ray Bursts And Their Relation To Astroparticle Physics And Cosmology

By

This article gives an overview of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and their relation to astroparticle physics and cosmology. GRBs are the most powerful explosions in the universe that occur roughly once per day and are characterized by flashes of gamma-rays typically lasting from a fraction of a second to thousands of seconds. Even after more than four decades since their discovery they still remain not fully understood. Two types of GRBs are observed: spectrally harder short duration bursts and softer long duration bursts. The long GRBs originate from the collapse of massive stars whereas the preferred model for the short GRBs is coalescence of compact objects such as two neutron stars or a neutron star and a black hole. There were suggestions that GRBs can produce ultra-high energy cosmic rays and neutrinos. Also a certain sub-type of GRBs may serve as a new standard candle that can help constrain and measure the cosmological parameters to much higher redshift than what was possible so far. I will review the recent experimental observations.

In the first Lecture, the Big Bang and the Standard Model of particle physics are introduced, as well as the structure of the latter and open issues beyond it. Neutrino physics is discussed in the second Lecture, with emphasis on models for neutrino masses and oscillations. The third Lecture is devoted to supersymmetry, including the prospects for discovering it at accelerators or as cold dark matter. Inflation is reviewed from the viewpoint of particle physics in the fourth Lecture, including simple models with a single scalar inflaton field: the possibility that this might be a sneutrino is proposed. Finally, the fifth Lecture is devoted to topics further beyond the Standard Model, such as grand unification, baryo- and leptogenesis - that might be due to sneutrino inflaton decays - and ultra-high-energy cosmic rays - that might be due to the decays of metastable superheavy dark matter particles.

40Non-Friedmann Cosmology For The Local Universe, Significance Of The Universal Hubble Constant And Short-distance Indicators Of Dark Energy

By

Basing on the increasing evidence for the cosmological relevance of the local Hubble flow, we consider a simple analytical cosmological model for the Local Universe. This is a non-Friedmann model with a non-uniform static space-time. The major dynamical factor controlling the local expansion is the antigravity produced by the omnipresent and permanent dark energy of the cosmic vacuum (or the cosmological constant). The antigravity dominates at distances larger than 1-2 Mpc from the center of the Local Group. The model gives a natural explanation of the two key quantitative characteristics of the local expansion flow, which are the local Hubble constant and the velocity dispersion of the flow. The observed kinematical similarity of the local and global flows of expansion is clarified by the model. We demonstrate analytically the efficiency of the vacuum cooling mechanism that allows one to see the Hubble flow so close to the Local Group. Special significance is argued for the 'universal Hubble constant' H_V, depending only on the vacuum density (H_V \approx 60 km/s/Mpc). The model makes a number of testable predictions. It also shows unexpectedly that it is the dwarf galaxies of the local flow with the shortest distances and lowest redshifts that may be the most sensitive indicators of dark energy in our neighborhood.

41Cosmology Of Modified (but Second Order) Gravity

By

This is a brief review of modified gravity cosmologies. Generically extensions of gravity action involve higher derivative terms, which can result in ghosts and instabilities. There are three ways to circumvent this: Chern-Simons terms, first order variational principle and nonlocality. We consider recent cosmological applications of these three classes of modified gravity models, in particular to the dark energy problem. The viable parameter spaces can be very efficiently constrained by taking into account cosmological data from all epochs in addition to Solar system tests and stability considerations. We make some new remarks concerning so called algebraic scalar-tensor theories, biscalar reformulation of nonlocal actions involving the inverse d'Alembertian, and a possible covariant formulation holographic cosmology with nonperturbative gravity.

42Varying-G Cosmology With Type Ia Supernovae

By

The observation that Type Ia supernovae are fainter than expected given their red shifts has led to the conclusion that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. The widely accepted hypothesis is that this acceleration is caused by a cosmological constant or, more generally, some dark energy field that pervades the universe. This hypothesis presents a challenge to physics so severe that one is motivated to explore alternative explanations. In this paper, we explore whether the data from Type Ia supernovae can be explained with an idea that is almost as old as that of the cosmological constant, namely, that the strength of gravity varies on a cosmic timescale. This topic is an ideal one for investigation by an undergraduate physics major because the entire chain of reasoning from models to data analysis is well within the mathematical and conceptual sophistication of a motivated undergraduate.

43Dynamical Behavior In $f(T,T_G)$ Cosmology

By

The $f(T,T_G)$ class of gravitational modification, based on the quadratic torsion scalar $T$, as well as on the new quartic torsion scalar $T_G$ which is the teleparallel equivalent of the Gauss-Bonnet term, is a novel theory, different from both $f(T)$ and $f(R,G)$ ones. We perform a detailed dynamical analysis of a spatially flat universe governed by the simplest non-trivial model of $f(T,T_G)$ gravity which does not introduce a new mass scale. We find that the universe can result in dark-energy dominated, quintessence-like, cosmological-constant-like or phantom-like solutions, according to the parameter choices. Additionally, it may result to a dark energy - dark matter scaling solution, and thus it can alleviate the coincidence problem. Finally, the analysis "at infinity" reveals that the universe may exhibit future, past, or intermediate singularities depending on the parameters.

44Complementarity Of Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay And Cosmology

By

Neutrinoless double beta decay experiments constrain one combination of neutrino parameters, while cosmic surveys constrain another. This complementarity opens up an exciting range of possibilities. If neutrinos are Majorana particles, and the neutrino masses follow an inverted hierarchy, then the upcoming sets of both experiments will detect signals. The combined constraints will pin down not only the neutrino masses but also constrain one of the Majorana phases. If the hierarchy is normal, then a beta decay detection with the upcoming generation of experiments is unlikely, but cosmic surveys could constrain the sum of the masses to be relatively heavy, thereby producing a lower bound for the neutrinoless double beta decay rate, and therefore an argument for a next generation beta decay experiment. In this case as well, a combination of the phases will be constrained.

46Gravitational Wave Memory In DS$_{4+2n}$ And 4D Cosmology

By

We argue that massless gravitons in all even dimensional de Sitter (dS) spacetimes higher than two admit a linear memory effect arising from their propagation inside the null cone. Assume that gravitational waves (GWs) are being generated by an isolated source, and over only a finite period of time. Outside of this time interval, suppose the shear-stress of the GW source becomes negligible relative to its energy-momentum and its mass quadrupole moments settle to static values. We then demonstrate, the transverse-traceless (TT) GW contribution to the perturbation of any dS$_{4+2n}$ written in a conformally flat form -- after the source has ceased and the primary GW train has passed -- amounts to a spacetime constant shift in the flat metric proportional to the difference between the TT parts of the source's final and initial mass quadrupole moments. As a byproduct, we present solutions to Einstein's equations linearized about de Sitter backgrounds of all dimensions greater than three. We then point out there is a similar but approximate tail induced linear GW memory effect in 4D matter dominated universes. Our work here serves to improve upon and extend the 4D cosmological results of arXiv:1504.06337, which in turn preceded complementary work by Bieri, Garfinkle and Yau (arXiv:1509.01296) and by Kehagias and Riotto (arXiv:1602.02653).

47Dynamical Study Of DBI-essence In Loop Quantum Cosmology And Braneworld

By

We have studied homogeneous isotropic FRW model having dynamical dark energy DBI-essence with scalar field. The existence of cosmological scaling solutions restricts the Lagrangian of the scalar field $\phi$. Choosing $p=X g(X e^{\lambda \phi})$, where $X=-g^{\mu\nu} \partial_\mu \phi \partial_\nu \phi /2$ with $g$ is any function of $X e^{\lambda \phi}$ and defining some suitable transformations, we have constructed the dynamical system in different gravity: (i) Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC), (ii) DGP BraneWorld and (iii) RS-II Brane World. We have investigated the stability of this dynamical system around the critical point for three gravity models and investigated the scalar field dominated attractor solution in support of accelerated universe. The role of physical parameters have also been shown graphically during accelerating phase of the universe.

49From Stringy Particle Physics To Moduli Stabilisation And Cosmology

By

Intersecting D6-branes provide a geometrically intuitive road to stringy particle physics models, where D6-branes stuck at orbifold singularities can lead to the stabilisation of deformation moduli, and the QCD axion can arise from the open string sector in a very constrained way compared to pure field theory. We demonstrate this interplay of different physical features here through an explicit model.

50Randall-Sundrum Versus Holographic Cosmology

By

We consider a model of a holographic braneworld universe in which a cosmological fluid occupies a 3+1 dimensional brane located at the boundary of the asymptotic AdS$_5$ bulk. We combine the AdS/CFT correspondence and the second Randall-Sundrum (RSII) model to establish a relationship between the RSII braneworld cosmology and the boundary metric induced by the time dependent bulk geometry. In the framework of the Friedmann Robertson Walker cosmology we discuss some physically interesting scenarios involving the RSII and holographic braneworlds.

1Richard Cory

By

This was the weekly poetry project for 3 June 2006. Many “character” poems cut straight to the inmost psychology of their subjects, but here, the eponymous Richard Cory with all his wealth and charm is viewed entirely from the outside. Indeed as the poem ends, we realise with an unforgettable shock just how little we, the narrator, or perhaps anyone really knew about him. (Summary by LauraFox)

9Margaret of Angoulême, Queen of Navarre

By

Margaret of Angoulême, Queen of Navarre (Marguerite de Navarre), (1492-1549), was the sister of Francis I, King of France. She was highly-educated and was courted by the future Henry VIII of England. However, at the age of seventeen, she was married by royal decree to the untutored dolt, Charles IV of Alençon. After his death she wed Henry II of Navarre by whom she had a daughter (the mother of the future Henry IV of France) and a son, who died in infancy. The author takes us with Margaret on her perilous journey over the Pyrenees to Spain to attempt to free her brother, Francis, held captive by the Holy Roman Emperor. Margaret's support for the first stirrings of the Reformation in France alarmed the Catholic conservatives of the Sorbonne. Her cycle of short stories, the "Heptameron," is still read and enjoyed today. (Pamela Nagami)

10Emily Brontë

By

Emily Brontë (1818-1848) is best known for her only novel, "Wuthering Heights." She was born in Yorkshire, northern England, where her father was an Anglican curate. When Brontë was three years old her mother died of cancer. At the age of six she joined her three sisters briefly at the Clergy Daughters' School, where privations and abuse contributed to the deaths of two of them. Her elder sister, Charlotte, immortalized this terrible place in "Jane Eyre." In 1846 Emily Brontë, under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, published a selection of her poetry. In 1847 appeared her dark, gothic novel, "Wuthering Heights," with its Byronic anti-hero, Heathcliff. Brontë was shy, even reclusive, and never married. In the fall of 1848 she fell ill with inflammation of the lungs, probably due to rapidly-progressive tuberculosis, and died in December of that year, aged twenty-nine. This is a short biography of Brontë written by the British poet, novelist, and critic, Agnes Mary Frances Robinson (1857-1944). (Pamela Nagami)

12In New England Fields and Woods

By

Book's cover

Born in rural Vermont in 1833, and nearly unknown to today's readers, Rowland Evans Robinson was once one of Vermont's best-known writers. A talented artist, he drew cartoons in New York City for the “funny papers" before returning to Vermont, where he authored nearly a dozen widely-read books on nature and rural farm life. Poor vision progressed to blindness between the ages of 44 and 60, yet he continued to write with the aid of his wife, Anna. This collection of short essays follows New England's changing seasons and moods in all its natural beauty. - Summary by Nemo

13Short History of France: From Caesar's Invasion to the Battle of Waterloo

By

After the Roman conquest, the Celtic Gauls adopted Roman culture and speech. The Germanic invasions ultimately transformed France into a Catholic feudal society. In this short history, Mary Duclaux traces the emergence of towns, the rise of the French monarchy, the calamitous Hundred Years' War and the Wars of Religion. We meet Joan of Arc, Charles VII, the gallant Henry IV, and the Sun King, Louis XIV, who drove France to the brink of bankruptcy. In the second half of the book Duclaux gives us the French Revolution and the Age of Napoleon: Louis XVI, sunk in "plump and smiling apathy," Marie Antoinette, who pleaded with France's enemies for rescue, the Paris mob who hated her, Danton, Saint-Just, Robespierre, and the Terror, and finally a sombre young Corsican officer with no small talk, the military and administrative genius, Napoleon Bonaparte. (Summary by Pamela Nagami, M.D.)

15Loom and Spindle

By

Harriet Robinson was a frequent contributor to the famous monthly periodical, "The Lowell Offering", which featured poetry, essays and fiction written between 1840-1845 by the young female textile workers (ages 15-35) known as Lowell Mill Girls, living in the innovative Lowell, Massachusetts textile mills communities. Articles published therein describe their living conditions, where they came from, how they felt about their jobs, challenges met, bosses, new experiences and education they received. Rev. A.C. Thomas who organized and edited the publication, found in these factory girls a good field for the application of his belief that women have the right and the ability to express their thoughts, both in speaking and in writing. In his own words, "...and thus was published ... the first magazine or journal written exclusively by women in all the world." Harriet continued writing for the rest of her life, including this book, largely in support of women's education, independence and suffrage. (Summary by ~ Michele Fry)

17Bundle of Letters from over the Sea

By

Book's cover

In presenting my little book to the public, I feel that I should apologize for so doing, instead of introducing it; for at the time my letters were written I had no idea of publishing them. Since my return, however, several friends who had read them have assured me that they greatly enjoyed them, and felt that others would do so, also, had they the opportunity. The letters have, at least, the merit of being fresh and honest impressions of the places described, as they were written on the spots. Remembering how eagerly I have always read letters of travel, I sincerely hope{x} that mine may prove a source of pleasure to some—to those who have been over the same ground, and to many who have the pleasure in anticipation. I am aware that the route I describe is a well-worn thoroughfare, but every eye has its own perspective, and different views of the same pictures assist the sight-seer in comprehending the whole. Therefore, I here beg the charity of all into whose hands this little book may fall. L. B. R. Hotel Oxford, Boston, December 20, 1889. - Summary by From the Preface
