The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method which we are using to fit and describe QSO spectra relies upon the fact that QSO continuum are generally very smooth and simple except for emission and absorption lines. To see this we need high signal-to-noise (S/N) spectra of QSOs at low redshift which have relatively few absorption lines in the Lyman-a forest. We need a large number of such spectra to use as the basis set for the PCA analysis which will find the set of principal component spectra which describe the QSO family as a whole. We have found that too few HST spectra have the required S/N and hence we need to supplement them with ground based spectra of QSOs at higher redshift. We have many such spectra and we have been working to make them suitable for this analysis. We have concentrated on this topic since 12/15/01.

Observations of the late type M supergiant TV Gem (M1Iab) reveal strong UV continuum between 1200 A and 3200 A. The continuum is essentially featureless with the exception of a number of broad absorption features in the short wavelength spectra range. An absorption feature centered around 1400 A could be due to Si IV absorption found typically in spectra of middle B type stars. UV emission from this star is unexpected because earlier ground-based observations give no indication of a possible association with an early companion or circumstellar ionized nebulosity. A B9 or A1 III - IV type star approximately 2to 3 magnitudes fainter than the M star could explain the level of UV continuum observed, but a fully self consistent explanation that includes the B-V color index of TV Gem is not as yet possible. The continuum flux dependence with wavelength in the UV spectral range could be attributed to a high energy source such as an accretion disc. It is suggested TV Gem is a good candidate for HEAO-2 (Einstein) satellite observations because a high energy object in close proximity to the M star would likely be a source of soft X-ray emission.

We have imaged two normal, non-coronal, infrared-bright K-giants, alpha Boo and alpha Tau, in the 1.4-millimeter and 2.8-millimeter continuum using BIMA. These stars have been used as important absolute calibrators for several infrared satellites. Our goals are: (1) to probe the structure of their upper photospheres; (2) to establish whether these stars radiate as simple photospheres or possess long-wavelength chromospheres; and (3) to make a connection between millimeter-wave and far-infrared absolute flux calibrations. To accomplish these goals we also present ISO Long Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS) measurements of both these K-giants. The far-infrared and millimeter continuum radiation is produced in the vicinity of the temperature minimum in a Boo and a Tau, offering a direct test of the model photospheres and chromospheres for these two cool giants. We find that current photospheric models predict fluxes in reasonable agreement with those observed for those wavelengths which sample the upper photosphere, namely less than or equal to 170 micrometers in alpha Tau and less than or equal to 125 micrometers in alpha Boo. It is possible that alpha Tau is still radiative as far as 0.9 - 1.4 millimeters. We detect chromospheric radiation from both stars by 2.8 millimeters (by 1.4 millimeters in alpha Boo), and are able to establish useful bounds on the location of the temperature minimum. An attempt to interpret the chromospheric fluxes using the two-component "bifurcation model" proposed by Wiedemann et al. (1994) appears to lead to a significant contradiction.

A light curve of gamma-ray continuum emission from point sources in the galactic center region is generated from balloon and satellite observations made over the past 25 years. The emphasis is on the wide field-of-view instruments which measure the combined flux from all sources within approximately 20 degrees of the center. These data have not been previously used for point-source analyses because of the unknown contribution from diffuse disk emission. In this study, the galactic disk component is estimated from observations made by the Gamma Ray Imaging Spectrometer (GRIS) instrument in Oct. 1988. Surprisingly, there are several times during the past 25 years when all gamma-ray sources (at 100 keV) within about 20 degrees of the galactic center are turned off or are in low emission states. This implies that the sources are all variable and few in number. The continuum gamma-ray emission below approximately 150 keV from the black hole candidate 1E1740.7-2942 is seen to turn off in May 1989 on a time scale of less than two weeks, significantly shorter than ever seen before. With the continuum below 150 keV turned off, the spectral shape derived from the HEXAGONE observation on 22 May 1989 is very peculiar with a peak near 200 keV. This source was probably in its normal state for more than half of all observations since the mid-1960's. There are only two observations (in 1977 and 1979) for which the sum flux from the point sources in the region significantly exceeds that from 1E1740.7-2942 in its normal state.

Clayborn, along with United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) Senior Regional Advisor Tamara Wright were in town to meet with homeless services providers and partners. The funds will be used to help work toward functional zero homelessness in our community.

How to recognize the different forms and the most severe forms of Stargardt's disease? The disease in its most traditional aspect was described by Stargardt in 1909. He already recognized the autonomic recessive pattern of inheritance. In a first clinical period from 1909 to 1950, various authors described the ophthalmoscopic aspects, the evolution and the possible associations. Dominant forms and late onset Stargardt disease were described as well as the association with neurological disorders. They correspond to other disease entities or to specific clinical forms. The introduction of electrophysiology in the period 1950-1967 resulted in a new approach with special emphasis on the electrophysiological disturbances of Stargardt disease and of related maculopathies. In contrast with other hereditary maculopathies the ERG and the EOG are initially normal in this disease. In the third period 1970-1993 fluorescein angiography permitted to discover some essential diagnostic signs, such as the dark choroid or « silence choroidien » first described by Paul Bonnin, the retinal pigment epithelium changes, with the perifoveolar window defects and especially the fundus flavimaculatus flecks, which were initially considered as a separate entity, but later accepted as a characteristic of Stargardt disease. The genetic period was introduced in 1993 by Kaplan et al. with the localization, then followed in 1997 by Allikmets et al with the identification of the gene. Already more than 600 mutations are known. We are now entering a period that could be called metabolic period, or post-genomics, where the underlying biochemical mechanisms responsible for retinal apoptosis are being elucidated and lead, we hope to different therapies.

Narrow band Ross filter measurements of the Fe 25 line flux around 0.185 nm and simultaneous broadband measurements during a solar flare were used to determine the relationship between the solar coronal abundances of iron and helium. The Fe 25 ion population was also determined as a function of time. The proportional counter and the Ross filter on OSO-7 were utilized. The data were analyzed under the separate assumptions that (1) the electron density was high enough that a single temperature could characterize the continuum spectrum and the ionization equilibrium, and that (2) the electron density was low so that the ion populations trailed the electron temperature in time. It was found that the density was at least 5x10 to the 9th power, and that the high density assumption was valid. It was also found that the iron abundance is 0.000011 for a helium abundance of 0.2, relative to hydrogen.

We prove that, when linearized, the governing equations of an incompressible elastic continuum yield Maxwell's equations as corollaries. Through judicious distinction between the referential and local descriptions, the principle of material invariance is established and shown to be a true covariance principle, unlike the Lorentz covariance, which is valid only for non-deforming frames in rectilinear relative motion. Thus, this paper establishes that electrodynamics can be fully explained if one assumes that it is the manifestation of the internal forces of an underlying elastic material which we term the metacontinuum. The new frame-indifferent formulation of electrodynamics is shown to incorporate the Lorentz force as an integral part of Faraday's law, rather than as an additional empirical variable. Respectively, if the upper-convected derivative is added in Maxwell's displacement current it can explain Biot-Savart's and Oersted-Ampere's laws. An immediate corollary of the material invariance is the Galilean invariance of the model. The possible detection of the absolute continuum is also discussed. First, the famous experiment of Ives and Stilwell is reexamined with a modified Bohr-Rydberg formula for the emitted frequencies from a moving atom, and it is shown that the results are fully compatible with the presence of an absolute medium. Second, a new interferometry experiment is proposed in which the first-order Doppler effect can be measured, and thus the presence of a medium at rest can be unequivocally established.

We report our recent progress on extragalactic spectroscopic and continuum observations, including HCN(J=1-0), HCO$^+$(J=1-0), and CN(N=1-0) imaging surveys of local Seyfert and starburst galaxies using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array, high-J CO observations (J=3-2 observations using the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) and J=2-1 observations with the Submillimeter Array) of galaxies, and $\lambda$ 1.1 mm continuum observations of high-z violent starburst galaxies using the bolometer camera AzTEC mounted on ASTE.

In continuum mechanics, the equations of motion for mixtures are derived through the use of Hamilton's extended principle which regards the mixture as a collection of distinct continua. The internal energy is assumed to be a function of densities, entropies and successive spatial gradients of each constituent. We first write the equations of motion for each constituent of an inviscid miscible mixture of fluids without chemical reactions or diffusion. Our work leads to the equations of motion in an universal thermodynamic form in which interaction terms subject to constitutive laws, difficult to interpret physically, do not occur. For an internal energy function of densities, entropies and spatial gradients, an equation describing the barycentric motion of the constituents is obtained. The result is extended for dissipative mixtures and an equation of energy is obtained. A form of Clausius-Duhem's inequality which represents the second law of thermodynamics is deduced. In the particular case of compressible mixtures, the equations reproduce the classical results. Far from critical conditions, the interfaces between different phases in a mixture of fluids are layers with strong gradients of density and entropy. The surface tension of such interfaces is interpreted.

We determine the variation in the nonthermal radio spectral index in the nearby spiral galaxy M33 at a linear resolution of 360 pc. We separate the thermal and nonthermal components of the radio continuum emission without the assumption of a constant nonthermal spectral index. Using the Spitzer FIR data at 70 and 160 $\mu$m and a standard dust model, we deredden the H$\alpha$ emission. The extinction corrected H$\alpha$ emission serves as a template for the thermal free-free radio emission. Subtracting from the observed 3.6 cm and 20 cm emission (Effelsberg and the VLA) this free-free emission, we obtain the nonthermal maps. A constant electron temperature used to obtain the thermal radio intensity seems appropriate for M~33 which, unlike the Milky Way, has a shallow metallicity gradient. For the first time, we derive the distribution of the nonthermal spectral index across a galaxy, M33. We detect strong nonthermal emission from the spiral arms and star-forming regions. Wavelet analysis shows that at 3.6 cm the nonthermal emission is dominated by contributions from star-forming regions, while it is smoothly distributed at 20 cm. For the whole galaxy, we obtain thermal fractions of 51% and 18% at 3.6 cm and 20 cm, respectively. The thermal emission is slightly stronger in the southern than in the northern half of the galaxy. We find a clear radial gradient of mean extinction in the galactic plane. The nonthermal spectral index map indicates that the relativistic electrons suffer energy-loss when diffusing from their origin in star-forming regions towards interarm regions and the outer parts of the galaxy. We also conclude that the radio emission is mostly nonthermal at R $>$ 5 kpc in M33.

The calculation of solar absolute fluxes in the near-UV is revisited, discussing in some detail recent updates in theoretical calculations of bound-free opacity from metals. Modest changes in the abundances of elements such as Mg and the iron-peak elements have a significant impact on the atmospheric structure, and therefore self-consistent calculations are necessary. With small adjustments to the solar photospheric composition, we are able to reproduce fairly well the observed solar fluxes between 200 and 270 nm, and between 300 and 420 nm, but find too much absorption in the 270-290 nm window. A comparison between our reference 1D model and a 3D time-dependent hydrodynamical simulation indicates that the continuum flux is only weakly sensitive to 3D effects, with corrections reaching

We present new 7mm continuum observations of Orion BN/KL with the VLA. We resolve the emission from the protostar radio Source I and BN at several epochs. Source I is highly elongated NW-SE, and remarkably stable in flux density, position angle, and overall morphology over nearly a decade. This favors the extended emission component arising from an ionized disk rather than a jet. We have measured the proper motions of Source I and BN for the first time at 43 GHz. We confirm that both sources are moving at high speed (12 and 26 km/s, respectively) approximately in opposite directions, as previously inferred from measurements at lower frequencies. We discuss dynamical scenarios that can explain the large motions of both BN and Source I and the presence of disks around both. Our new measurements support the hypothesis that a close (~50 AU) dynamical interaction occurred around 500 years ago between Source I and BN as proposed by Gomez et al. From the dynamics of encounter we argue that Source I today is likely to be a binary with a total mass on the order of 20 Msun, and that it probably existed as a softer binary before the close encounter. This enables preservation of the original accretion disk, though truncated to its present radius of ~50 AU. N-body numerical simulations show that the dynamical interaction between a binary of 20 Msun total mass (I) and a single star of 10 Msun mass (BN) may lead to the ejection of both and binary hardening. The gravitational energy released in the process would be large enough to power the wide-angle flow traced by H2 and CO emission in the BN/KL nebula. Assuming the proposed dynamical history is correct, the smaller mass for Source I recently estimated from SiO maser dynamics (>7 Msun) by Matthews et al., suggests that non-gravitational forces (e.g. magnetic) must play an important role in the circumstellar gas dynamics.

Quasar emission lines are sensitive to both the luminosity and shape of the quasars' high energy continuum - primarily in the soft X-ray and the (obscured) extreme ultraviolet. We initiate the first large-scale, multi-line investigation of correlations between the QSO soft X-ray continuum and UV line emission, using an IUE/Einstein sample. We characterize the distributions of line equivalent and velocity widths (EW and FWHM) of 85 QSOs in the IUE atlas of Lanzetta et al. (1993), using a new error analysis for objective, automated line measurements, and contrast measured line parameters to the QSO continuum spectral energy distributions (SEDs). We find significant correlations between EW and UV luminosity (e.g., the well-studied Baldwin effect) for Lya, CIV, HeII, and CIII. EW(CIII) and EW(HeII) show previously unreported correlations with Lx which for CIII appears to be primary. The line ratios CIII/Lya and HeII/Lya both show strongest dependence on Lx. EW(Lya) correlates strongly with spectral slopes \alpha_{uv} and \alpha_{ox}, but NOT with Lx. We argue that one simple geometrical interpretation of the Baldwin effect (BEff) as a result of a distribution of disk inclinations is not plausible. The BEff weakens or disappears when line emission is correctly compared to the luminosity in the continuum bandpass relevant to its production, which suggests that the BEff is due to a change in SED with luminosity. Our prediction that no BEff relative to X-ray luminosity should be found for FeII or MgII emission lines, will be tested in a later paper, extended to a wider redshift/luminosity range.

We present radio continuum light curves of the magnetar SGR J1745$-$2900 and Sgr A* obtained with multi-frequency, multi-epoch Very Large Array observations between 2012 and 2014. During this period, a powerful X-ray outburst from SGR J1745$-$2900 occurred on 2013-04-24. Enhanced radio emission is delayed with respect to the X-ray peak by about seven months. In addition, the flux density of the emission from the magnetar fluctuates by a factor of 2 to 4 at frequencies between 21 and 41 GHz and its spectral index varies erratically. Here we argue that the excess fluctuating emission from the magnetar arises from the interaction of a shock generated from the X-ray outburst with the orbiting ionized gas at the Galactic center. In this picture, variable synchrotron emission is produced by ram pressure variations due to inhomogeneities in the dense ionized medium of the Sgr A West bar. The pulsar with its high transverse velocity is moving through a highly blue-shifted ionized medium. This implies that the magnetar is at a projected distance of $\sim0.1$ pc from Sgr A* and that the orbiting ionized gas is partially or largely responsible for a large rotation measure detected toward the magnetar. Despite the variability of Sgr A* expected to be induced by the passage of the G2 cloud, monitoring data shows a constant flux density and spectral index during this period

Here we argue that the excess fluctuating emission from the magnetar arises from the interaction of a shock generated from the X-ray outburst with the orbiting ionized gas at the Galactic center. In this picture, variable synchrotron emission is produced by ram pressure variations due to inhomogeneities in the dense ionized medium of the Sgr A West bar. The pulsar with its high transverse velocity is moving through a highly blue-shifted ionized medium. This implies that the magnetar is at a projected distance of $\sim0.1$ pc from Sgr A* and that the orbiting ionized gas is partially or largely responsible for a large rotation measure detected toward the magnetar. Despite the variability of Sgr A* expected to be induced by the passage of the G2 cloud, monitoring data shows a constant flux density and spectral index during this period

A continuum theory is presented for representing the high temperature, time dependent, hereditary deformation behavior of metallic composites that can be idealized as pseudohomogeneous continua with locally definable directional characteristics. Homogenization of textured materials (molecular, granular, fibrous) and applicability of continuum mechanics in structural applications depends on characteristic body dimensions, the severity of gradients (stress, temperature, etc.) in the structure and the relative size of the internal structure (cell size) of the material. The point of view taken here is that the composite is a material in its own right, with its own properties that can be measured and specified for the composite as a whole.

A continuum mechanics theory of deformable solids is formulated to account for large deformations, nonlinear elasticity, inelastic deformation mechanisms, microstructure changes, and time dependent fields, i.e., dynamics. The theory incorporates notions from Finsler differential geometry, and it provides a diffuse interface description of surfaces associated with microstructure. Mechanisms include phase transitions and inelastic shearing, with phase boundaries and shear planes the associated surfaces. A director or internal state vector of pseudo-Finsler space is viewed as an order parameter. Newly derived in the present work are the governing equations for dynamics, including kinematic relations, balances of momentum and energy, and evolution law(s) for the internal state. Also derived are jump conditions pertinent to shock loading. Metric tensors and volume can vary isotropically with internal state via a conformal transformation. The dynamic theory is applied to describe shock loading of ceramic crystals of boron carbide, accounting for inelastic mechanisms of shear accommodation and densification upon amorphization under high pressure loading. Analytical predictions incorporating the pseudo-Finsler metric demonstrate remarkable agreement with experimental data, without parameter fitting. Additional solutions suggest that dynamic shear strength could be improved significantly in boron-based ceramics by increasing surface energy, decreasing inelastic shear accommodation in softened amorphous bands, and to a lesser extent, by increasing the energy barrier for phase transformation.

The work concerns several problems with the flow of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids in the annular region between eccentric infinite cylinders.

Galaxies are believed to be the main providers of Lyman continuum (LyC) photons during the early phases of the cosmic reionization. Little is known however, when it comes to escape fractions and the mechanisms behind the leakage. To learn more one may look at local objects, but so far only one low-z galaxy has shown any sign of emitting LyC radiation. With data from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), Bergvall et al. (2006) found an absolute escape fraction of ionizing photons (f_esc) of 4-10% for the blue compact galaxy Haro 11. However, using a newer version of the reduction pipeline on the same data set, Grimes et al. (2007) could not confirm this and derived an upper limit of f_esc \leq 2%. Here, using the last version of the pipeline CalFUSE v3.2, we aim at settling the question if Haro 11 is emitting ionizing radiation to a significant level or not. We also investigate the performance of the reduction pipeline for faint targets such as Haro 11. At these faint flux levels both FUSE and CalFUSE are pushed to their limits, and a detailed analysis was undertaken. We show that non-simultaneous background estimates are insuffient when working with low signal-to-noise data, and a new background model was developed based on a direct fit to the detector response. Applying the new background fit, a significant signal in the LyC emerged in both detector segments covering these wavelengths. Thus, the leakage is confirmed with a flux density of f_900=4.0 *10^{-15} erg/s/cm^2/{\AA} (S/N=4.6), measured on the airglow free regions in the LyC for the night only data. This corresponds to an absolute escape fraction of ionizing photons for Haro 11 of f_esc=3.3 \pm 0.7%. The results were confirmed by investigating the 2D data, the count rates and the residual flux in CII(1036{\AA}).
