The engineering manual provides a complete companion documentation about the structure of the main program and subroutines, the preparation of input data, the interpretation of output results, access and use of the program, and the detailed description of all the analytic, logical expressions and flow charts used in computations and program structure. A numerical example is provided and solved completely to show the sequence of computations followed. The program is carefully structured to reduce both user's time and costs without sacrificing accuracy. The user would expect a cost of CPU time of approximately $5.00 per building zone excluding printing costs. The accuracy, on the other hand, measured by deviation of simulated consumption from watt-hour meter readings, was found by many simulation tests not to exceed + or - 10 percent margin.

A compilation of data on the energy consumption of air and ground vehicles is presented. The ratio BTU/ASM, British Thermal Units/Available Seat Mile, is used to express vehicle energy intensiveness, and related to the energy consumed directly in producing seat-mile or ton-mile productivity. Data is presented on passenger and freight vehicles which are in current use or which are about to enter service, and advanced vehicles which may be operational in the 1980's and beyond. For the advanced vehicles, an estimate is given of the date of initial operational service, and the performance characteristics. Other key considerations in interpreting energy intensiveness for a given mode are discussed, such as: load factors, operations, overhead energy consumption, and energy investments in new structure and equipment.

This project investigates German consumer perceptions towards protein extracted from grass and grasslands/pastures for human consumption. Grass species, specifically red-and other clovers, have been used as a longstanding source of protein in animal feed. While its implementation in human consumption is biochemically and biologically possible, it would fall under the novel food regulations and is therefore not yet on the market. However, whether grass as a source of protein holds preliminary consumer acceptance, is still uncertain.

Flexible loads, i.e. the loads whose power trajectory is not bound to a specific one, constitute a sizable portion of current and future electric demand. This flexibility can be used to improve the performance of the grid, should the right incentives be in place. In this paper, we consider the optimal decision making problem faced by a flexible load, demanding a certain amount of energy over its availability period, subject to rate constraints. The load is also capable of providing Ancillary Services (AS) by decreasing or increasing its consumption in response to signals from the Independent System Operator. Under arbitrarily distributed and correlated Markovian energy and AS prices, we obtain the optimal policy for minimizing expected total cost, which includes cost of energy and benefits from AS provision, assuming no capacity reservation requirement for AS provision. We also prove that the optimal policy has a multi-threshold form and can be computed, stored and operated efficiently. We further study the effectiveness of our proposed optimal policy and its impact on the grid. We show that, while optimal simultaneous consumption and AS provision under real-time stochastic prices is achievable with acceptable computational burden, the impact of adopting such real-time pricing schemes on the network might not be as good as suggested by the majority of the existing literature. In fact, we show that such price responsive loads are likely to induce peak-to-average ratios much more than what is observed in the current distribution networks and adversely affect the grid.

Home energy management systems can be used to monitor and optimize consumption and local production from renewable energy. To assess solutions before their deployment, researchers and designers of those systems demand for energy consumption datasets. In this paper, we present the GREEND dataset, containing detailed power usage information obtained through a measurement campaign in households in Austria and Italy. We provide a description of consumption scenarios and discuss design choices for the sensing infrastructure. Finally, we benchmark the dataset with state-of-the-art techniques in load disaggregation, occupancy detection and appliance usage mining.

A continuous-time consumption-investment model with constraint is considered for a small investor whose decisions are the consumption rate and the allocation of wealth to a risk-free and a risky asset with logarithmic Brownian motion fluctuations. The consumption rate is subject to an upper bound constraint which linearly depends on the investor's wealth and bankruptcy is prohibited. The investor's objective is to maximize total expected discounted utility of consumption over an infinite trading horizon. It is shown that the value function is (second order) smooth everywhere but a unique possibility of (known) exception point and the optimal consumption-investment strategy is provided in a closed feedback form of wealth, which in contrast to the existing work does not involve the value function. According to this model, an investor should take the same optimal investment strategy as in Merton's model regardless his financial situation. By contrast, the optimal consumption strategy does depend on the investor's financial situation: he should use a similar consumption strategy as in Merton's model when he is in a bad situation, and consume as much as possible when he is in a good situation.

A follow-on study was performed to assess the potential of an advanced turboprop transport aircraft concept. To provide a valid basis for comparison, an equivalent turbofan transport aircraft concept incorporating equal technology levels was also derived. The aircraft as compared on the basis of weight, size, fuel utilization, operational characteristics and costs.

Abstract Although home-based care (HBC) programs are widely implemented throughout Africa, their success depends on the existence of an enabling environment, including a referral system and supply of essential commodities. The objective of this study was to explore the current state of client referral patterns and practices by community care workers (CCWs), in an evolving environment of one rural South African sub-district. Using a participant triangulation approach, in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 17 CCWs, 32 HBC clients and 32 primary caregivers (PCGs). An open-ended interview guide was used for data collection. Participants were selected from comprehensive lists of CCWs and their clients, using a diversified criterion-based sampling method. Three independent researchers coded three sets of data – CCWs, Clients and PCGs, for referral patterns and practices of CCWs. Referrals from clinics and hospitals to HBC occurred infrequently, as only eight (25%) of the 32 clients interviewed were formally referred. Community care workers showed high levels of commitment and personal investment in supporting their clients to use the formal health care system. They went to the extent of using their own personal resources. Seven CCWs used their own money to ensure client access to clinics, and eight gave their own food to ensure treatment adherence. Community care workers are essential in linking clients to clinics and hospitals and to promote the appropriate use of medical services, although this effort frequently necessitated consumption of their own personal resources. Therefore, risk protection strategies are urgently needed so as to ensure sustainability of the current work performed by HBC organizations and the CCW volunteers.

In Slovenia, nutrition education is included in the compulsory education curriculum of the nine-year elementary school. The aim of nutrition education is for schoolchildren to acquire knowledge on nutrition to help them form healthy nutritional habits. This research aims at establishing whether the formal nutrition education carried out at schools influenced children's nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and nutritional habits. The research included 630 11-year-old children from 28 randomly selected schools. During the research, Grade 6 children of the nine-year elementary school on average listened to 38.6 hours of nutrition contents, which are planned in the curriculum for home economics. At the beginning and at the end of the school year, a knowledge test was used to assess their nutrition knowledge. Through a questionnaire, the researchers established their attitudes to healthy eating and nutritional habits. Immediately after completing nutrition education, the children's behavior did not show a statistically significant change, and the connection between the newly-acquired nutrition knowledge and consumption of meals and various foodstuffs was negligible. In the researchers' view, formal education improved the nutrition knowledge of children, but had no significant influence on their attitude to healthy eating habits and their nutrition behavior immediately after the education was completed. However, the researchers did establish that children formed positive attitudes towards healthy eating habits, although they were less frequently applied in practice. To achieve goals of children's nutritional education, the researchers suggested an increased number of nutrition education hours, supported with the positive example of teachers and the school setting that ensures the availability of healthy food. Energy is a National Security Issue and therefore the nation must embark upon new ideas and methods of meeting its energy requirements. To meet this challenge, the nation must employ both energy conservation measures and alternative energy sources. The Cooperative Developmental Energy Program (CDEP) at Fort Valley State University (FVSU), in partnership with the Museum of Aviation located at Robins Air Force Base, proposes the development and implementation of energy investment strategies as a viable demonstration of the use of new workable energy technologies.

This article examines the contribution of television and other mass media to alcohol consumption and its abuse. The author notes that there is no scientific evidence available that addresses this point directly, and the importance of such an issue is not recognized in the scientific literature. The absence of this information interferes with the ability to act wisely in regard to portrayals of alcohol in entertainment and advertising on television. The author delineates four issues that are of central importance in examining the portrayals of alcohol consumption on television. (1) the pattern and character of such portrayals; (2) the contribution of such portrayals to the concepts held by young people about alcohol; (3) the contribution of portrayals to maintaining or altering patterns of alcohol consumption among adults; and (4) the potential role of television in altering patterns of alcohol consumption and abuse.
