1NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19920001888: Comments On Dual-mode Nuclear Space Power And Propulsion System Concepts

Some form of Dual-Mode Nuclear Space Power & Propulsion System (D-MNSP&PS) will be essential to spacefaring throughout teh solar system and that such systems must evolve as mankind moves into outer space. The initial D-MNPSP&PS Reference System should be based on (1) present (1990), and (2) advanced (1995) technology for use on comparable mission in the 2000 and 2005 time period respectively. D-MNSP&PS can be broken down into a number of subsystems: Nuclear subsystems including the energy source and controls for the release of thermal power at elevated temperatures; power conversion subsystems; waste heat rejection subsystems; and control and safety subsystems. These systems are briefly detailed.

2ERIC ED073269: Concepts And Comments: Occupational Education And Community College Facilities.

Community college preparation of students for the job market shows an increasing acceptance of basic responsibility for post-secondary occupational education, as contrasted to the poorer placement opportunities of senior institutional graduates. Implications for facility requirements can be drawn from examining concepts, which require: (1) cooperative program planning and implementation, so that the community college catalyzes the community's vocational education capacity, (2) occupational education as a full partner in a comprehensive community college program, (3) a wide range of occupational clusters in community college occupational education, (4) a "lattice" structure for upward and sideward mobility according to the student's ability, (5) special training for the disadvantaged, handicapped, and unemployed, (6) provisions for continuing education, (7) flexible instructional modes to accomplish specified behavioral objectives, (8) work experience, (9) continual updating of vocational programs, and (10) guidance, counseling, and placement services. Working diagrams of line-staff organization for community and junior colleges are provided. (AG)

Using the news media as resource material in the classroom is an excellent and under-utilized way to bring the reality and diversity of external politics into the classroom. Using that external reality in combination with the internal reality of the schools as unique political communities can provide a more complete and realistic civic education. The development of civic competency in student-citizens requires not only an abstract comprehension of political systems, but also the generation of applied political and media skills. One major emphasis of citizenship education concerns the interdependence of peoples and political entities throughout the world. Television in particular brings the concept of a global village into the classroom and should be used to heighten students' interest in and awareness of civic education. Other major themes of civic education concern the use of the news media as an instructional tool for political systems education, the ubiquitous nature of politics in public affairs reporting, and the importance of teaching competency in coping with bureaucratic systems.
