This book introduces the basic concepts of connecting computers together and provides technical background necessary for constructing small networks. This textbook came from a frustration of its main author. Many authors chose to write a textbook because there are no textbooks in their field or because they are not satisfied with the existing textbooks. This frustration has produced several excellent textbooks in the networking community.  The frustrations that motivated this book are different. When the main author started to teach networking in the late 1990s, students were already Internet users, but their usage was limited. Students were still using reference textbooks and spent time in the library. Today’s students are completely different. They are avid and experimented web users who find lots of information on the web. This is a positive attitude since they are probably more curious than their predecessors. Thanks to the information that is available on the Internet, they can check or obtain additional information about the topics explained by their teachers. This abundant information creates several challenges for a teacher. Until the end of the nineteenth century, a teacher was by definition more knowledgeable than his students and it was very difficult for the students to verify the lessons given by their teachers. Today, given the amount of information available at the fingertips of each student through the Internet, verifying a lesson or getting more information about a given topic is sometimes only a few clicks away. Websites such as wikipedia provide lots of information on various topics and students often consult them. Unfortunately, the organisation of the information on these websites is not well suited to allow students to learn from them. Furthermore, there are huge differences in the quality and depth of the information that is available for different topics.  The second reason is that the computer networking community is a strong participant in the open-source movement. Today, there are high-quality and widely used open-source implementations for most networking protocols. This includes the TCP/IP implementations that are part of linux, freebsd or the uIP stack running on 8bits controllers, but also servers such as bind, unbound, apache or sendmail and implementations of routing protocols such as xorp or quagga. Furthermore, the documents that define almost all of the Internet protocols have been developed within the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) using an open process. The IETF publishes its protocol specifications in the publicly available RFC and new proposals are described in Internet drafts.  This open textbook aims to fill the gap between the open-source implementations and the open-source network specifications by providing a detailed but pedagogical description of the key principles that guide the operation of the Internet. The book is released under a creative commons licence. Such an open-source license is motivated by two reasons. The first is that we hope that this will allow many students to use the book to learn computer networks. The second is that I hope that other teachers will reuse, adapt and improve it. Time will tell if it is possible to build a community of contributors to improve and develop the book further. Computer Networking In Hindi

A computer-oriented, classroom-based research project was conducted at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virginia, to explore the ways in which students in a composition and literature class might use a local area network (LAN) as a catalyst to critical thinking, to construct a decentralized classroom, and to use various forms of discourse. The project focused on 49 freshmen enrolled in spring 1992 in two sections of a college composition course that develops writing skills through reflection on literary texts and culture. Students used interactive computer tutorials to analyze essays, plot, and characterization; and posted their work on the LAN electronic bulletin board for comments by other students and the instructor. Several times during the semester, instructors asked students to generate their own critical questions about the texts being read. Data on student progress were gathered through a writing attitude survey, a computer-assisted instruction attitude survey, and a typology used to rank the degree of complexity of students' questions. Study findings included the following: (1) the use of computers appeared to have less influence on attitudes toward writing than did the instructor assigned to the section; (2) most students reported that the computers were easy to learn; (3) students' questions resisted simple categorization through the typology; and (4) the degree of complexity of the questions did not correlate with final course grades. Recommendations concerning hardware and software, student and teacher preparation, and use of LANs are included. (Contains 15 references.) (PAA)

Whether progress will be made depends upon organizational initiative among multiple institutions to pool personnel and capital so as to effectively address the major issues in management approach, support, and software design that limit the feasible interdependence of computing operation. The organizational requirements are partially revealed by examining progressive stages of resource sharing in organizational and operational terms rather than such technical aspects as load sharing or program sharing that have been introduced in the past. Five stages are identified, ranging from simply establishing multiple service access to the advanced stage where multiple institutions organize for joint development of new resources. A preliminary evaluation framework for new management arrangements results when these stages are mapped against the four functional levels inherent in computer network management. Future needs for networking experimentation and research are briefly described, and other National Bureau of Standards technical results are identified in context. (Author)

A new program to train blind and visually impaired individuals to design and run a computer network has been developed. The program offers the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) training. The program, which began in February 2001, recently graduated its first class of students, who are currently completing 1-month internships to complete their 9-month program. A second class began in August 2001, and recruiting for a class scheduled for February 2002 is under way. Beginning with the February 2002 class, the 1-month internship will be extended to 2 months. In the program, visually impaired students study the same curriculum as students without sight impairments. The only difference is that visually impaired students use adaptive software to help them access their computers and custom-designed tactile devices to comprehend network diagraming. Blind students use a program known as JAWS, which reads the screen to the user. Computer-integrated print magnifiers enable students to magnify textbooks and handouts while still looking at their computer screen. Upon completing the course, students are able to perform various skills related to designing and operating a computer network, including installing, configuring, and upgrading various versions of the Windows operating system and creating and managing user accounts. The Computer Science Department at Slippery Rock University created a laboratory for its Computer Networks and System Administration and Security courses under relaxed financial constraints. This paper describes the department's experience designing and using this laboratory, including lessons learned and descriptions of some student projects performed in the lab.

Equipment purchased under this contract has been used by approximately twelve researchers (two post-docs, eight graduate students, two undergraduates) for several research activities, as summarized briefly below.

The primary purpose of this project was to establish a state-of-the art computer networking laboratory to support the department curriculum in the areas of data communications, computer networks, and Internet/Intranet programming through hands-on approaches. As stated in the project proposal, the laboratory would provide the necessary technological infrastructure for the department: (1) To improve the quality of education in the existing courses related to computer networks and data communications as well as other computer science courses such programming languages and computer hardware and software systems. (2) To design and implement an advanced level computer science course in computer networks and data communications. (3) To provide faculty the technological tools to conduct research programs. The construction of the lab initiated in August 1, 1999 and continued until September 15, 2000. The lab was constructed in three phases, namely, planning and design, purchasing and installation, and testing. Each phase was successfully carried out to completion by the project's Principal and Co-Principal investigators and valuable contributions from the department and the university administrators and staff.

The different technologies applicable to computer networks serving limited geographic areas, e.g., a single campus, factory, or office complex, are discussed in a number of short presentations made by active researchers and implementers in this field. Intensive discussion by participants in working sessions is reported for six topics: subnet architecture, protocols for local area networks, local network applications, network architecture, network operating systems, and analysis and performance evaluation. The first fair was held in 1977 and was organized by Jim Warren and Bob Relling. At the time, it was the biggest computer show in the world, intended to popularize the peronal computer in the home. This first fair took place on April 16-17, 1977, in San Francisco Civic Auditorium and Brooks Hall, and saw the debut of the Commodre PET, presented by Chuck Peddle, and the Apple II, presented by then 21-year-old Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. There were about 180 exhibitors, among them Intel, MITS, and Digitial Research. More than 12,000 people visited the fair.
