1Challenges For Distributional Compositional Semantics
By Daoud Clarke
This paper summarises the current state-of-the art in the study of compositionality in distributional semantics, and major challenges for this area. We single out generalised quantifiers and intensional semantics as areas on which to focus attention for the development of the theory. Once suitable theories have been developed, algorithms will be needed to apply the theory to tasks. Evaluation is a major problem; we single out application to recognising textual entailment and machine translation for this purpose.

2A Frobenius Model Of Information Structure In Categorical Compositional Distributional Semantics
By Dimitri Kartsaklis and Mehrnoosh Sadrzadeh
The categorical compositional distributional model of Coecke, Sadrzadeh and Clark provides a linguistically motivated procedure for computing the meaning of a sentence as a function of the distributional meaning of the words therein. The theoretical framework allows for reasoning about compositional aspects of language and offers structural ways of studying the underlying relationships. While the model so far has been applied on the level of syntactic structures, a sentence can bring extra information conveyed in utterances via intonational means. In the current paper we extend the framework in order to accommodate this additional information, using Frobenius algebraic structures canonically induced over the basis of finite-dimensional vector spaces. We detail the theory, provide truth-theoretic and distributional semantics for meanings of intonationally-marked utterances, and present justifications and extensive examples.

3A Compositional Semantics For CHR
By Maurizio Gabbrielli and Maria Chiara Meo
Constraint Handling Rules (CHR) are a committed-choice declarative language which has been designed for writing constraint solvers. A CHR program consists of multi-headed guarded rules which allow one to rewrite constraints into simpler ones until a solved form is reached. CHR has received a considerable attention, both from the practical and from the theoretical side. Nevertheless, due the use of multi-headed clauses, there are several aspects of the CHR semantics which have not been clarified yet. In particular, no compositional semantics for CHR has been defined so far. In this paper we introduce a fix-point semantics which characterizes the input/output behavior of a CHR program and which is and-compositional, that is, which allows to retrieve the semantics of a conjunctive query from the semantics of its components. Such a semantics can be used as a basis to define incremental and modular analysis and verification tools.

4A Compositional Distributional Semantics, Two Concrete Constructions, And Some Experimental Evaluations
By Mehrnoosh Sadrzadeh and Edward Grefenstette
We provide an overview of the hybrid compositional distributional model of meaning, developed in Coecke et al. (arXiv:1003.4394v1 [cs.CL]), which is based on the categorical methods also applied to the analysis of information flow in quantum protocols. The mathematical setting stipulates that the meaning of a sentence is a linear function of the tensor products of the meanings of its words. We provide concrete constructions for this definition and present techniques to build vector spaces for meaning vectors of words, as well as that of sentences. The applicability of these methods is demonstrated via a toy vector space as well as real data from the British National Corpus and two disambiguation experiments.

5Quantifier Scope In Categorical Compositional Distributional Semantics
By Mehrnoosh Sadrzadeh
In previous work with J. Hedges, we formalised a generalised quantifiers theory of natural language in categorical compositional distributional semantics with the help of bialgebras. In this paper, we show how quantifier scope ambiguity can be represented in that setting and how this representation can be generalised to branching quantifiers.

6Semantics Of Templates In A Compositional Framework For Building Logics
By Ingmar Dasseville, Matthias van der Hallen, Gerda Janssens and Marc Denecker
There is a growing need for abstractions in logic specification languages such as FO(.) and ASP. One technique to achieve these abstractions are templates (sometimes called macros). While the semantics of templates are virtually always described through a syntactical rewriting scheme, we present an alternative view on templates as second order definitions. To extend the existing definition construct of FO(.) to second order, we introduce a powerful compositional framework for defining logics by modular integration of logic constructs specified as pairs of one syntactical and one semantical inductive rule. We use the framework to build a logic of nested second order definitions suitable to express templates. We show that under suitable restrictions, the view of templates as macros is semantically correct and that adding them does not extend the descriptive complexity of the base logic, which is in line with results of existing approaches.

7Compositional Semantics For The Procedural Interpretation Of Logic
By M. H. van Emden
Semantics of logic programs has been given by proof theory, model theory and by fixpoint of the immediate-consequence operator. If clausal logic is a programming language, then it should also have a compositional semantics. Compositional semantics for programming languages follows the abstract syntax of programs, composing the meaning of a unit by a mathematical operation on the meanings of its constituent units. The procedural interpretation of logic has only yielded an incomplete abstract syntax for logic programs. We complete it and use the result as basis of a compositional semantics. We present for comparison Tarski's algebraization of first-order predicate logic, which is in substance the compositional semantics for his choice of syntax. We characterize our semantics by equivalence with the immediate-consequence operator.

8Compositional Distributional Semantics With Compact Closed Categories And Frobenius Algebras
By Dimitri Kartsaklis
This thesis contributes to ongoing research related to the categorical compositional model for natural language of Coecke, Sadrzadeh and Clark in three ways: Firstly, I propose a concrete instantiation of the abstract framework based on Frobenius algebras (joint work with Sadrzadeh). The theory improves shortcomings of previous proposals, extends the coverage of the language, and is supported by experimental work that improves existing results. The proposed framework describes a new class of compositional models that find intuitive interpretations for a number of linguistic phenomena. Secondly, I propose and evaluate in practice a new compositional methodology which explicitly deals with the different levels of lexical ambiguity (joint work with Pulman). A concrete algorithm is presented, based on the separation of vector disambiguation from composition in an explicit prior step. Extensive experimental work shows that the proposed methodology indeed results in more accurate composite representations for the framework of Coecke et al. in particular and every other class of compositional models in general. As a last contribution, I formalize the explicit treatment of lexical ambiguity in the context of the categorical framework by resorting to categorical quantum mechanics (joint work with Coecke). In the proposed extension, the concept of a distributional vector is replaced with that of a density matrix, which compactly represents a probability distribution over the potential different meanings of the specific word. Composition takes the form of quantum measurements, leading to interesting analogies between quantum physics and linguistics.

9Distributed Representations For Compositional Semantics
By Karl Moritz Hermann
The mathematical representation of semantics is a key issue for Natural Language Processing (NLP). A lot of research has been devoted to finding ways of representing the semantics of individual words in vector spaces. Distributional approaches --- meaning distributed representations that exploit co-occurrence statistics of large corpora --- have proved popular and successful across a number of tasks. However, natural language usually comes in structures beyond the word level, with meaning arising not only from the individual words but also the structure they are contained in at the phrasal or sentential level. Modelling the compositional process by which the meaning of an utterance arises from the meaning of its parts is an equally fundamental task of NLP. This dissertation explores methods for learning distributed semantic representations and models for composing these into representations for larger linguistic units. Our underlying hypothesis is that neural models are a suitable vehicle for learning semantically rich representations and that such representations in turn are suitable vehicles for solving important tasks in natural language processing. The contribution of this thesis is a thorough evaluation of our hypothesis, as part of which we introduce several new approaches to representation learning and compositional semantics, as well as multiple state-of-the-art models which apply distributed semantic representations to various tasks in NLP.

10The Montagovian Generative Lexicon ΛTyn: An Integrated Type-theoretical Framework For Compositional Semantics And Lexical Pragmatics
By Christian Retoré
In the recent years, different but similar approaches integrated lexi- cal semantics within compositional semantics. These approaches all make use of type theory at least to compose the meanings. We present here with some details one of these approaches, ours, which makes use of sec- ond order lambda calculus as a type theory for meaning assembly and of multi sorted higher order predicate logic for semantic representation. The advantages of such an approach are illustrated both in formal semantics (determiners, quantifiers, plurals) and in lexical pragmatics (coercions, possible and impossible copredication over different senses, deverbal am- biguities, fictive motion,..). Thereafter we explain the similar approaches by pointing out the differences.

11Compositional Semantics An Introduction To The Syntax Semantics Interface
By Pauline Jacobson
This book provides an introduction to compositional semantics and to the syntax/semantics interface. It is rooted within the tradition of model theoretic semantics, and develops an explicit fragment of both the syntax and semantics of a rich portion of English. Professor Jacobson adopts a Direct Compositionality approach, whereby the syntax builds the expressions while the semantics simultaneously assigns each a model-theoretic interpretation. Alongside this approach, the author also presents a competing view that makes use of an intermediate level, Logical Form. She develops parallel treatments of a variety of phenomena from both points of view with detailed comparisons. The book begins with simple and fundamental concepts and gradually builds a more complex fragment, including analyses of more advanced topics such as focus, negative polarity, and a variety of topics centering on pronouns and binding more generally. Exercises are provided throughout, alongside open-ended questions for students to consider. The exercises are interspersed with the text to promote self-discovery of the fundamentals and their applications. The book provides a rigorous foundation in formal analysis and model theoretic semantics and is suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in linguistics, philosophy of language, and related fields

12Graded Entailment For Compositional Distributional Semantics
By Desislava Bankova, Bob Coecke, Martha Lewis and Daniel Marsden
The categorical compositional distributional model of natural language provides a conceptually motivated procedure to compute the meaning of sentences, given grammatical structure and the meanings of its words. This approach has outperformed other models in mainstream empirical language processing tasks. However, until recently it has lacked the crucial feature of lexical entailment -- as do other distributional models of meaning. In this paper we solve the problem of entailment for categorical compositional distributional semantics. Taking advantage of the abstract categorical framework allows us to vary our choice of model. This enables the introduction of a notion of entailment, exploiting ideas from the categorical semantics of partial knowledge in quantum computation. The new model of language uses density matrices, on which we introduce a novel robust graded order capturing the entailment strength between concepts. This graded measure emerges from a general framework for approximate entailment, induced by any commutative monoid. Quantum logic embeds in our graded order. Our main theorem shows that entailment strength lifts compositionally to the sentence level, giving a lower bound on sentence entailment. We describe the essential properties of graded entailment such as continuity, and provide a procedure for calculating entailment strength.

13DTIC ADA219029: Connectionism And Compositional Semantics
By Defense Technical Information Center
Quite a few interesting experiments have been done applying neural networks to natural language tasks. Without detracting from the value of these early investigations, this paper argues that current neural network architectures are too weak to solve anything but toy language problems. Their downfall is the need for 'dynamic inference', in which several pieces of information not previously seen together are dynamically combined to derive the meaning of a novel input. The first half of the paper defines a hierarchy of classes of connectionist models, from categorizers and associative memories to pattern transformers are dynamic inferencers. Some well-known connectionist models that deal with natural language are shown to be either categorizers or pattern transformers. The second half examines in detail a particular natural language problem: prepositional phase attachment. Attaching a PP to an NP changes its meaning, thereby influencing other attachments. So PP attachment requires compositional semantics; and compositionality in non-toy domains requires dynamic inference. Mere pattern transformers cannot learn the PP attachment task without an exponential training set. Connectionist-style computation still has many valuable ideas to offer, so this is not an indictment of connectionisms's potential. Keywords: Knowledge representation; Computer systems; Natural language; Semantics; Artificial intelligence; Connectionist models.

14Event In Compositional Dynamic Semantics
By Sai Qian and Maxime Amblard
We present a framework which constructs an event-style dis- course semantics. The discourse dynamics are encoded in continuation semantics and various rhetorical relations are embedded in the resulting interpretation of the framework. We assume discourse and sentence are distinct semantic objects, that play different roles in meaning evalua- tion. Moreover, two sets of composition functions, for handling different discourse relations, are introduced. The paper first gives the necessary background and motivation for event and dynamic semantics, then the framework with detailed examples will be introduced.

15Alignment-based Compositional Semantics For Instruction Following
By Jacob Andreas and Dan Klein
This paper describes an alignment-based model for interpreting natural language instructions in context. We approach instruction following as a search over plans, scoring sequences of actions conditioned on structured observations of text and the environment. By explicitly modeling both the low-level compositional structure of individual actions and the high-level structure of full plans, we are able to learn both grounded representations of sentence meaning and pragmatic constraints on interpretation. To demonstrate the model's flexibility, we apply it to a diverse set of benchmark tasks. On every task, we outperform strong task-specific baselines, and achieve several new state-of-the-art results.

16Multi-Step Regression Learning For Compositional Distributional Semantics
By Edward Grefenstette, Georgiana Dinu, Yao-Zhong Zhang, Mehrnoosh Sadrzadeh and Marco Baroni
We present a model for compositional distributional semantics related to the framework of Coecke et al. (2010), and emulating formal semantics by representing functions as tensors and arguments as vectors. We introduce a new learning method for tensors, generalising the approach of Baroni and Zamparelli (2010). We evaluate it on two benchmark data sets, and find it to outperform existing leading methods. We argue in our analysis that the nature of this learning method also renders it suitable for solving more subtle problems compositional distributional models might face.

17On The System F As A Glue Language For Natural-language Compositional-semantics

In order to model in compositional framework some phenomena of lexical pragmatics and in particular the ones studied by Nicholas Asher several contributions developed in our team did use the system F of Jean-Yves Girard to construct logical formulae expressing the meaning of sentences --- while other authors prefer to use Per Martin-L\"of's type theory In this note we explain the motivations supporting our preference for system F.

18Compositional Semantics In Verbmobil
By Johan Bos, Björn Gambäck, Christian Lieske, Yoshiki Mori, Manfred Pinkal and Karsten Worm
The paper discusses how compositional semantics is implemented in the Verbmobil speech-to-speech translation system using LUD, a description language for underspecified discourse representation structures. The description language and its formal interpretation in DRT are described as well as its implementation together with the architecture of the system's entire syntactic-semantic processing module. We show that a linguistically sound theory and formalism can be properly implemented in a system with (near) real-time requirements.

19From Compositional To Systematic Semantics
By Wlodek Zadrozny
We prove a theorem stating that any semantics can be encoded as a compositional semantics, which means that, essentially, the standard definition of compositionality is formally vacuous. We then show that when compositional semantics is required to be "systematic" (that is, the meaning function cannot be arbitrary, but must belong to some class), it is possible to distinguish between compositional and non-compositional semantics. As a result, we believe that the paper clarifies the concept of compositionality and opens a possibility of making systematic formal comparisons of different systems of grammars.

20A Structured Alternative To Prolog With Simple Compositional Semantics
By António Porto
Prolog's very useful expressive power is not captured by traditional logic programming semantics, due mainly to the cut and goal and clause order. Several alternative semantics have been put forward, exposing operational details of the computation state. We propose instead to redesign Prolog around structured alternatives to the cut and clauses, keeping the expressive power and computation model but with a compositional denotational semantics over much simpler states-just variable bindings. This considerably eases reasoning about programs, by programmers and tools such as a partial evaluator, with safe unfolding of calls through predicate definitions. An if-then-else across clauses replaces most uses of the cut, but the cut's full power is achieved by an until construct. Disjunction, conjunction and until, along with unification, are the primitive goal types with a compositional semantics yielding sequences of variable-binding solutions. This extends to programs via the usual technique of a least fixpoint construction. A simple interpreter for Prolog in the alternative language, and a definition of until in Prolog, establish the identical expressive power of the two languages. Many useful control constructs are derivable from the primitives, and the semantic framework illuminates the discussion of alternative ones. The formalisation rests on a term language with variable abstraction as in the {\lambda}-calculus. A clause is an abstraction on the call arguments, a continuation, and the local variables. It can be inclusive or exclusive, expressing a local case bound to a continuation by either a disjunction or an if-then-else. Clauses are open definitions, composed (and closed) with simple functional application ({\beta}-reduction). This paves the way for a simple account of flexible module composition mechanisms. Cube, a concrete language with the exposed principles, has been implemented.

21A Compositional Semantics For Stochastic Reo Connectors
By Young-Joo Moon, Alexandra Silva, Christian Krause and Farhad Arbab
In this paper we present a compositional semantics for the channel-based coordination language Reo which enables the analysis of quality of service (QoS) properties of service compositions. For this purpose, we annotate Reo channels with stochastic delay rates and explicitly model data-arrival rates at the boundary of a connector, to capture its interaction with the services that comprise its environment. We propose Stochastic Reo automata as an extension of Reo automata, in order to compositionally derive a QoS-aware semantics for Reo. We further present a translation of Stochastic Reo automata to Continuous-Time Markov Chains (CTMCs). This translation enables us to use third-party CTMC verification tools to do an end-to-end performance analysis of service compositions.

22Multilingual Models For Compositional Distributed Semantics
By Karl Moritz Hermann and Phil Blunsom
We present a novel technique for learning semantic representations, which extends the distributional hypothesis to multilingual data and joint-space embeddings. Our models leverage parallel data and learn to strongly align the embeddings of semantically equivalent sentences, while maintaining sufficient distance between those of dissimilar sentences. The models do not rely on word alignments or any syntactic information and are successfully applied to a number of diverse languages. We extend our approach to learn semantic representations at the document level, too. We evaluate these models on two cross-lingual document classification tasks, outperforming the prior state of the art. Through qualitative analysis and the study of pivoting effects we demonstrate that our representations are semantically plausible and can capture semantic relationships across languages without parallel data.

23Sentence Entailment In Compositional Distributional Semantics
By Esma Balkir, Dimitri Kartsaklis and Mehrnoosh Sadrzadeh
Distributional semantic models provide vector representations for words by gathering co-occurrence frequencies from corpora of text. Compositional distributional models extend these representations from words to phrases and sentences. In categorical compositional distributional semantics these representations are built in such a manner that meanings of phrases and sentences are functions of their grammatical structure and the meanings of the words therein. These models have been applied to reasoning about phrase and sentence level similarity. In this paper, we argue for and prove that these models can also be used to reason about phrase and sentence level entailment. We provide preliminary experimental results on a toy entailment dataset.

24Compositional Operators In Distributional Semantics
By Dimitri Kartsaklis
This survey presents in some detail the main advances that have been recently taking place in Computational Linguistics towards the unification of the two prominent semantic paradigms: the compositional formal semantics view and the distributional models of meaning based on vector spaces. After an introduction to these two approaches, I review the most important models that aim to provide compositionality in distributional semantics. Then I proceed and present in more detail a particular framework by Coecke, Sadrzadeh and Clark (2010) based on the abstract mathematical setting of category theory, as a more complete example capable to demonstrate the diversity of techniques and scientific disciplines that this kind of research can draw from. This paper concludes with a discussion about important open issues that need to be addressed by the researchers in the future.

25DTIC ADA375695: Compositional Approach To Statecharts Semantics
By Defense Technical Information Center
Statecharts is a visual language for specifying reactive system behavior. The formalism extends traditional finite-state machines with notions of hierarchy and concurrency, and it is used in many popular software design notations. A large part of the appeal of Statecharts derives from its basis in state machines, with their intuitive operational interpretation. The traditional semantics of Statecharts however, suffers from a serious defect: it is not compositional, meaning that the behavior of system descriptions cannot be inferred from the behavior of their subsystems. Compositionality is a prerequisite for exploiting the modular structure of Statecharts for simulation, verification, and code generation, and it also provides the necessary foundation for reusability. This paper suggests a new compositional approach to formalizing Statecharts semantics as flattened transition systems in which transitions represent system steps. The approach builds on ideas developed for timed process calculi and employs structural operational rules to define the transitions of a Statecharts expression in terms of the transitions of its subexpressions. It is first investigated for a simple dialect of Statecharts, with respect to a variant of Paneli and Shalev's semantics, and is illustrated by means of a small example. To demonstrate its flexibility, the proposed approach is then extended to deal with practically useful features available in many Statecharts variants, namely state references, history states, and priority concepts along state hierarchies.

26Coordination In Categorical Compositional Distributional Semantics
By Dimitri Kartsaklis
An open problem with categorical compositional distributional semantics is the representation of words that are considered semantically vacuous from a distributional perspective, such as determiners, prepositions, relative pronouns or coordinators. This paper deals with the topic of coordination between identical syntactic types, which accounts for the majority of coordination cases in language. By exploiting the compact closed structure of the underlying category and Frobenius operators canonically induced over the fixed basis of finite-dimensional vector spaces, we provide a morphism as representation of a coordinator tensor, and we show how it lifts from atomic types to compound types. Linguistic intuitions are provided, and the importance of the Frobenius operators as an addition to the compact closed setting with regard to language is discussed.

27Contributions To The Compositional Semantics Of First-order Predicate Logic
By Philip Kelly and M. H. van Emden
Henkin, Monk and Tarski gave a compositional semantics for first-order predicate logic. We extend this work by including function symbols in the language and by giving the denotation of the atomic formula as a composition of the denotations of its predicate symbol and of its tuple of arguments. In addition we give the denotation of a term as a composition of the denotations of its function symbol and of its tuple of arguments.

28A Factorized Model For Transitive Verbs In Compositional Distributional Semantics
By Lilach Edelstein and Roi Reichart
We present a factorized compositional distributional semantics model for the representation of transitive verb constructions. Our model first produces (subject, verb) and (verb, object) vector representations based on the similarity of the nouns in the construction to each of the nouns in the vocabulary and the tendency of these nouns to take the subject and object roles of the verb. These vectors are then combined into a final (subject, verb, object) representation through simple vector operations. On two established tasks for the transitive verb construction our model outperforms recent previous work.

29Learning Dependency-Based Compositional Semantics
By Percy Liang, Michael I. Jordan and Dan Klein
Suppose we want to build a system that answers a natural language question by representing its semantics as a logical form and computing the answer given a structured database of facts. The core part of such a system is the semantic parser that maps questions to logical forms. Semantic parsers are typically trained from examples of questions annotated with their target logical forms, but this type of annotation is expensive. Our goal is to learn a semantic parser from question-answer pairs instead, where the logical form is modeled as a latent variable. Motivated by this challenging learning problem, we develop a new semantic formalism, dependency-based compositional semantics (DCS), which has favorable linguistic, statistical, and computational properties. We define a log-linear distribution over DCS logical forms and estimate the parameters using a simple procedure that alternates between beam search and numerical optimization. On two standard semantic parsing benchmarks, our system outperforms all existing state-of-the-art systems, despite using no annotated logical forms.

30Compositional Distributional Semantics With Long Short Term Memory
By Phong Le and Willem Zuidema
We are proposing an extension of the recursive neural network that makes use of a variant of the long short-term memory architecture. The extension allows information low in parse trees to be stored in a memory register (the `memory cell') and used much later higher up in the parse tree. This provides a solution to the vanishing gradient problem and allows the network to capture long range dependencies. Experimental results show that our composition outperformed the traditional neural-network composition on the Stanford Sentiment Treebank.
