Researchers in NASA Lewis Research Center s Electron Device Technology Branch are developing transmission lines for radiofrequency and wireless circuits that are more efficient, smaller, and make lower cost circuits possible. Traditionally, radiofrequency and wireless circuits have employed a microstrip or coplanar waveguide to interconnect the various electrical elements that comprise a circuit. Although a coplanar waveguide (CPW) is widely viewed as better than a microstrip for most applications, it too has problems. To solve these problems, NASA Lewis and the University of Michigan developed a new version of a coplanar waveguide with electrically narrow ground planes. Through extensive numerical modeling and experimental measurements, we have characterized the propagation constant of the FGC waveguide, the lumped and distributed circuit elements integrated in the FGC waveguide, and the coupling between parallel transmission lines. Although the attenuation per unit length is higher for the FGC waveguide because of higher conductor loss, the attenuation is comparable when the ground plane width is twice the center conductor width as shown in the following graph. An upper limit to the line width is derived from observations that when the total line width is greater than ld/2, spurious resonances due to the parallel plate waveguide mode are established. Thus, the ground plane width must be less than ld/4 where ld is the wavelength in the dielectric. Since the center conductor width S is typically less than l/10 to maintain good transverse electromagnetic mode characteristics, it follows that a ground plane width of B = 2S would also be electrically narrow. Thus, we can now treat the ground strips of the FGC waveguide the same way that the center conductor is treated.

This research was directed towards realization of Si monolithic microwave communication transceivers. New theoretical methods were developed for the analysis of noise and distortion phenomena in nonlinear communication circuits such as low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) in the over-driven condition, mixers, oscillators and detectors. Using these techniques new circuit topologies were synthesized for the realization of various essential transceiver functions, and prototype circuits were built in state-of-the-art Si monolithic processes and experimentally evaluated. New CAD approaches to the problem of mixer noise analysis were created which allow combination of large-signal time-varying circuit elements plus time-varying noise sources to be analyzed. Using this tool a new mixer topology in Si BiCMOS technology was synthesized with extremely wide dynamic range. The use of on-chip monolithic inductors allowed incorporation of a new tuned local-oscillator (LO) buffer circuit which added important degrees of freedom to the mixer realization.

Application of NASAP to design of circuits and extension of NASAP routines to large scale circuits

This report summarizes a study of the feasibility of interconnecting high speed GaAs integrated circuits by the transmission of optical energy. Data rates in excess of 2 Gb/s will require an interconnect technology other than hardwire. The monolithic integration of optical devices with electronic circuitry makes high-data-rate optical data transmission possible. This study examined the requirements on lasers, laser drivers, detectors, preamplifiers, and optical distribution networks to make data transmission between IC chips feasible. These requirements have led to the selection of certain device designs and optical distribution networks for use in optical interconnect. To assess the performance of an optically interconnected system, such issues as power dissipation, optical losses, and geometrical size were assessed for each configuration.

This report summarizes our research results in Integrated, High-Frequency Communication Circuits. A monolithic integrated circuit process giving 1.7 GHz transistors has been realized. This allowed realization of an optimum, wideband, low-distortion, monolithic amplifier with 20 dB gain and 370 MHz bandwidth. The circuit incorporates low-noise Zener diodes and has a worst case noise figure of 9 dB. Research on monolithic VCOs yielded an optimum topology for a temperature-stable high-frequency VCO. A monolithic triangle sine wave converter yielding 0.3% total harmonic distortion over a 70 deg C temperature range has been realized for use with such VCOs. A computer-aided design program SINC-S has been written for the analysis of oscillator circuits. This typically gives a factor of three improvement in computation time compared with conventional techniques. (Author)

In this program, we introduced several new concepts which are directed at considerably reducing the complexity of existing optoelectronic integrated circuits (OEICs) and their associated systems by providing 100% of the power requirements of the circuits located at the remote node from the near- end terminal using optical means. In particular, remote powering via the use of monolithically integrated photovoltaic (PV) cells associated with each circuit was demonstrated in the In0.53Ga0.47As/InP materials system. A novel optical logic circuit which could be optically configured to operate variously as an amplifier, bistable switch, latching switch, S-R flip flop or an inverter was used as the focus of this demonstration. Furthermore, very high sensitivity, novel heterojunction phototransistors were demonstrated for use in high sensitivity, low power applications which typify optically powered circuits. It is expected that providing local, contactless power using PV cells monolithically integrated onto the functional OEIC chip can be used to advantage in highly complex, high density optical interconnect and optical computing systems. The study of these latter applications was a central feature of a broader program which we are now pursuing at Princeton University.

The report presents comprehensive methods of calculation which have been found useful either for explaining or for predicting cumulative distributions of transmission loss for a wide range of radio frequencies over almost any type of terrain and in several climatic regions. Such quantitative estimates of propagation characteristics help to determine how well proposed radio systems will meet requirements for satisfactory service, free from harmful interference. Thus they may provide an important step toward more efficient use of the radio frequency spectrum.

The move of NSA to Fort Meade, Maryland in 1956 confronts NSA and CIA with mutual requirements for an easily operated and rapid intercommunication system including both telephone and tele- type service. 2. It is my understanding that NSA will be tributary of the intergovernmental dial system when it moves to Fo Meade. In addition to this, NSA has recommended that arrangements be made for direct interdialing between the telephones of NSA and CIA. I have advised the Director of NSA that representatives of CIA will contact personnel of his staff to discuss specific requirements and I am forwarding this information to you with the suggestion that someone from your staff contact NSA's Communication Officer. 3. CIA now has two teletype circuits for cipher communication with NSA. Retermination of these circuits to the move cite will be required. My office is presently endeavoring to determine from CIAts users if additional direct circuits will be required for communications as a result of the less accessible location of NSA. For the Term of his Natural Life, written by Marcus Clarke, was published in the Australian Journal between 1870 and 1872 (as His Natural Life), appearing as a novel in 1874. It is the best known novelisation of life as a convict in early Australian history. Described as a "ripping yarn", and at times relying on seemingly implausible coincidences, the story follows the fortunes of Rufus Dawes, a young man transported for a murder which he did not commit. The harsh and inhumane treatment meted out to the convicts, some of whom were transported for relatively minor crimes, is clearly conveyed. The conditions experienced by the convicts are graphically described. The novel was based on research by the author as well as a visit to the penal settlement of Port Arthur, Tasmania. A crack American flying troop has been sent to France, where they await further instructions. They are concerned that their extensive talents will not be put to good use in the war. Major Cowan introduces Lt. McGee as the British instructor for the crew. It turns out the Brit is actually an American, born in the U.S., even though his parents were British. McGee and Larkin are flying partners. Out on a mission, McGee spots a small enemy plane in a searchlight, probably intent on dropping flares to mark targets for bombers. He drives in for the attack successfully, as the enemy plane zooms earthward in flames. During another flight to Epernay, a fellow pilot, Siddons, fades back to a previous stop. McGee and Larkin suspect Siddons of aiding the enemy. Von Herzmann is preparing German pilots to fight Americans. Larkin and McGee defeat the enemy and force a retreat. In another battle, McGee must crash-land, where he passes out due to injuries. He spends weeks recovering in a hospital. When he is discharged, he cannot find his squadron. After diligent searching, he shows up at his old base. At the end, it is revealed that Siddons is not at all what he was suspected of being--in fact, the opposite. (Bill Boerst)

My aim in this book on Mythology for young readers has been to give them solid knowledge on the subject, as far as it is advisable to go with immature minds, based upon the most recent investigations of scholars, and to select the myths used in illustration of the plan, with a view to giving them interesting stories to read, which will, almost unconsciously to themselves, lay a firm foundation for the fascinating study of Comparative Mythology, should they wish to go more deeply into it in the future. <br><br> There is much talk nowadays as to the authenticity of the records of savage myths. Much of this talk seems to me futile, for a myth is not a fixed entity. Each successive narrator is almost sure to vary and embellish somewhat the material that comes to him, according to his own inventive fancy. If, therefore, a savage myth recorded by a white man retains the chief characteristics of the savage myth, in spite of some fanciful turns given it by him, to the degree, say, that a story of Ovid’s retains those of a Greek myth, it is to all intents and purposes a savage myth, and the embellishments may be disregarded, as Ovid’s are when we are considering Greek Mythology. I have, therefore, included in this volume those versions of the myths that seemed most readable and attractive, provided the primitive attitude of mind and customs were fully emphasized. - Summary by the author from the book

This 18th-century Latin textbook presents 202 Aesop's fables in Latin, "with an English translation more literal than any yet extant, designed for the readier instruction of beginners in the Latin tongue." There are fables here from the classical tradition, along with fables from the Renaissance author Abstemius and other neo-Latin sources. The book has the Latin and English texts in facing columns, with italic font being used to help students connect the Latin words in the left column with the English words in the right column. This LibriVox recording has been made with the Latin fables and English fables in separate files so that you can listen to the fables in Latin and/or in English as preferred. The fables in the book are numbered from 1 to 202, which will help those who want to look at the fable text while listening to the recording.
