Background and objective: Understanding the circumstances in which communication breaks down during conversations involving people with hearing loss is fundamental for (1) developing assessments and rehabilitation strategies that better target functional real-world communication, and (2) for enhancing signal-processing algorithms in hearing devices. The objective of this scoping review is to uncover what is known about the interplay between hearing loss and/or background noise on communication breakdowns. Methods and analysis: We will search electronic databases (MEDLINE, PsychINFO, Web of Science (Core Collection), EMBASE, Scopus and LLBA) and reference lists of key studies for article inclusion. Two reviewers will independently screen titles and abstracts to determine eligibility for inclusion in the review. Key information will then be categorised and classified to generate a summary of study participants, methods of identification, and key outcomes. The review will apply the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews to present the results along with a narrative synthesis describing overall trends. Ethics and dissemination: Formal ethical approval was not required to undertake this scoping review. Findings will be published in scientific peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations.

Team communication is a key component of teamwork (e.g., McEwan & Beauchamp, 2014; Rousseau et al., 2006) and substantive predictor of team effectiveness (e.g., Marlow et al., 2018; Mesmer-Magnus & DeChurch, 2009) across a range of contexts such as military, business, healthcare, and sport. As a dynamic process, communication can fluctuate over the course of a team’s tenure—at times, teammates communicate clearly, efficiently, and effectively, but in other cases, teams may experience breakdowns in that communication. Much research to date (including an array of review studies) has enhanced our understanding of high-quality communication, including measurement, correlates, and intervention strategies. While this has no doubt made an important contribution for researchers and applied practitioners (e.g., how communication can be improved, the consequences of high-quality communication), there does not yet appear (to the best of our knowledge) to be a review that summarizes the research on breakdowns in team communication execution. To gain a comprehensive understanding of team effectiveness, we argue that it is important to not only examine high-quality team functioning but poor team functioning as well, which no doubt includes team communication quality. From an intervention perspective, for example, team leaders and practitioners would not only be equipped with strategies to enhance/maximize team communication, but they would also be better positioned to prevent breakdowns in communication or manage them if/when they do occur. In this review, we will aim to cover a broad range of information concerning team communication breakdowns. The main purposes of the review are to: gain conceptual clarity on communication breakdowns (i.e., how have researchers described and conceptualised a breakdown in communication during team tasks); explore how communication breakdowns have been studied (i.e., study designs, measurement); summarize correlates of communication breakdowns (i.e., ideally broken down specifically into antecedents, consequences, moderators); and identify current gaps in knowledge and associated next steps in this line of research. As such, we have selected a scoping review as the type of review study. Whereas a systematic review (with or without meta-analysis) addresses a narrow and specific research question, a scoping review is defined as ‘a form of knowledge synthesis that addresses an exploratory research question aimed at mapping key concepts, types of evidence, and gaps in research related to a defined area or field by systematically searching, selecting, and synthesizing existing knowledge’ (Colquhoun et al., 2014, pp. 1293–1294).

The present study seeks to delve into the intricacies of repair strategies used by Algerian bilinguals. The topic of repair strategies has attracted ample attention in the last couple of decades. Consequently, this study is hoped to enrich previous findings. In this respect, the different types of repair strategies used by Algerian bilingual students are explored. Similarly, it attempts to examine the different functions lying at the very heart of each repair strategy. The participants taking part in this study are Algerian bilingual students at the University of Jordan. Data are elicited by audio-recording the participants who, in pairs, were asked to engage in casual conversations. The analysis of the results obtained is couched within the framework of conversation analysis. In fact, the findings indicate that Algerian bilinguals adopt nine different strategies of repair; namely: Expansion, repetition, meta-repair, hesitation, abort and abandon, code switching, abort and restart, avoidance and questioning. In a similar vein, these appear to serve different functions depending on the objective of the speaker and the type of communication breakdown taking place. The conclusions drawn from this paper may constitute basis for a fruitful line of inquiry in forthcoming research.

We noticed that when workers try to explain their mathematical practices to inquisitive outsiders, breakdowns in communication arise. We present here an example in which a worker spontaneously uses metaphors and models to facilitate explanation and communication. We analyse these, drawing on Lakoff & Johnson (1999) and Lakoff & Nunez (2000) in substance and theoretical approach. We suggest that metaphors and cultural models ground associations between academic and workplace discourse genres, and point out how sensori-motor groundings of the "basic" metaphors may afford gesture and image-schema which free discourse from formal mathematical language. In general we see breakdown repairs as being built through cultural models that extend beyond local mathematical genres which situate mathematics within academic or workplace contexts.
