Many studies in psychology and business have documented the existence of escalation of commitment (see Brockner 1992, Sleesman et al. 2012, Staw 1997 for reviews), the phenomenon whereby individuals tend to remain committed to and continue the paths they set for themselves even when they encounter a negative outcome along that path (Staw 1976). Most explanations for escalation of commitment draw from cognition-based theories, such as self-justification (Staw 1976), belief distortion (Biyalogorsky et al. 2006), and biased information processing (Schultze et al. 2012). Other scholars draw on additional psychological factors, such as framing (Whyte 1986), attribution (Harrison and Harrell 1993), goals (Conlon and Garland 1993), and agency effects (Kirby and Davis 1998, Onifade et al. 1997). However, although the negative outcomes associated with escalation also produce disappointment and regret (Bell 1982, Loomes and Sugden 1982, 1986), the relationship between these felt emotions and escalation of commitment remains understudied. This is somewhat surprising given the well-established relationship between emotions and subsequent behaviors suggest that these emotions are also likely to influence escalation of commitment decision following negative outcomes (e.g., Arkes et al. 2002, Luce et al. 1997, Zeelenberg and Pieters 2004). We integrate the research on emotions, escalation of commitment, self-serving bias, appraisals and belief updates to propose that because decision agency, (often referred to as personal agency or personal responsibility), triggers self-justification (Staw 1976) and belief inertia to generates positive evaluation of interim negative outcome (Schmidt and Calanton 2002), it attenuates disappointment as well as regret. We also hypothesize that disappointment and regret mediate the effect of decision agency on escalation of commitment. This proposed mediation suggests that mechanisms that intensify decision makers’ emotions could be effective de-escalation tools for countering escalation of commitment. In order to demonstrate one practical implication of identifying these mediating pathways, we hypothesize that independently exacerbating these emotions through deploying counterfactual information about a superior outcome of a foregone option, and/or reducing the reversibility of the interim outcome, has a de-escalating effect. Specifically, we hypothesize that when the outcome of a foregone option is superior and the received outcome is less likely to reverse, the attenuating effect of decision agency on disappointment and regret is moderated so that the amplifying effect of decision agency on escalation of commitment is minimized.

The Naperville Municipal Band once again entertained an audience at Central Park, but this time, the entire concert was planned by a French Horn player. Mayor George Pradel honored Florence Landorf with a proclamation for her 50th anniversary with the band. In honor of her accomplishment, the entire concert was composed of all her favorite songs like The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, Just a Closer Walk With Thee, and the Naperville School Song, as she was a graduate of Naperville High. Director Ron Keller, who's been with the band for 61 years, says Landorf is one of about a dozen who has had this honor. The band has two more concerts before ending their summer season, Thursday, August 8 and August 15. Both start at 7:30 in the evening and are free to the public.

The purpose of this study is to examine how children use inter-turn-interval (ITI) to reason about social commitment and the moderating role of Theory of Mind (ToM). In the experiment, children watch cartoons in which a squirrel asks two animals for help. One animal responds quickly after a short ITI (500 ms), while the other responds after a longer ITI (3000 ms). Children will then decide which animal ultimately helped the squirrel and answer questions about their social preference for the two animals. Additionally, we include a task in which children judge which character responded faster. This task aims to verify whether children can perceive and distinguish different response delays, ensuring that their choices are truly based on temporal information rather than other factors. In addition, this study includes the rhythm test from the Montreal Battery of Evaluation of Musical Abilities (MBEMA) to investigate whether children's sensitivity to pauses is related to their ability to perceive rhythm. This will help to explore whether the processing of temporal cues in language interactions is influenced by broader rhythmic cognition. Furthermore, we will use the Theory of Mind Inventory (ToMI) and the False Belief Task to assess children's ToM development. This will help determine whether their sensitivity to pauses is influenced by their ToM abilities, thus providing insight into the underlying mechanisms of their reasoning.

Impairments in hearing and/or vision are common in older age. Having lived one’s life as a fully sighted and hearing individual, older adults with sensory loss must come to terms with their declining capacity to interact with others and waning independence. There is ample research evidence showing that sensory loss (i.e., loss of hearing, vision or both) can be a distressful experience for older adults and their spouses, yet little has been done to understand what works in alleviating this distress or develop scalable cost-effective interventions to counter this distress or associated outcomes like depression, poor quality of life, and lower relationship quality. In this project, we will design and test an easy-to-administer, online intervention aimed at reducing emotional and marital distress in older adults with sensory loss and their spouses. The content of the intervention is based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy principles and exercises. In prior research, acceptance has been flagged as a promising factor on which to intervene to assist older couples’ emotional and marital recovery in the context of sensory loss (Lehane et al., 2018). Thus, the current project has the following aims: AIM 1: To develop and evaluate an easy-to-administer scalable ACT-based intervention for older adults with hearing, vision, or dual-sensory loss and their spouses. AIM 2: To assess the efficacy of the intervention in improving general well-being and reducing depressive symptoms and relationship dissatisfaction of older adults with sensory loss (hearing and/or vision impairment) and their spouses. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a third-wave Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) based on Relational Frame Theory (RFT) (Hayes et al., 2001; 2012). The primary objective of ACT is the development of psychological flexibility by facilitating six connected processes (Hayes et al., 2006). ACT is an evidence-based modality that has been applied and researched extensively in multiple disciplines. ACT has proven effective in the treatment of several psychiatric disorders (A-Tjak et al., 2021; Grau et al.,2023; Lee et al., 2023; Sun et al., 2022), the management of chronic pain (Haun et al., 2023; Lai et al., 2023), and in building positive outcomes amongst various population groups, including cancer and stroke survivors (Fang et al., 2021; Gladwyn-Khan & Morris, 2023), military veterans (Grau et al., 2023; Haun et al., 2023), and parents of children with special needs (Bergman et al., 2022), amongst many others. Researchers have also investigated different delivery modalities for ACT interventions, including individual and group formats, face-to-face, online, and telephonically (Sun et al., 2022). In addition to the primary research conducted, several reviews exist in which the use and efficacy of ACT for specific diagnoses and populations have been explored, including depression (Sun et al., 2022), advanced cancer (Fang et al., 2021), and chronic pain (Lai et al., 2023). The law permeates all human lives in some way or another. The law includes all the rules needed to regulate human interactions and maintain order (Humby et al., 2019). Furthermore, it is a characteristic of human life that is inherently part of any society (Humby et al., 2019). The law or legal context thus inevitably intersects with other domains of life from birth, throughout interpersonal relationships, in human rights and responsibilities, in what may rightfully be expected from the State, within careers, related to health, and after death, to name just a few. In addition, South Africa is notorious for high crime levels (Koko, 2023; South African Police Services, 2022; World Population Review, 2023). Thus, a significant portion of the population will likely come into even closer contact with the legal context as a victim, witness, or perpetrator at some point in their life. However, despite the extensive research conducted on ACT in various domains and the salience of the law in all human lives, research related to ACT within the legal context is scarce. A preliminary search of Medline, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and JBI Evidence Synthesis was conducted, and no current systematic reviews or scoping reviews on the topic were identified (according to a search conducted on 09/07/2023). Using various initial search terms and combinations, very little primary research can be found on the topic, either (according to a search conducted on 09/07/2023). Considering the vast range of circumstances in which ACT has proven effective, it is likely that ACT could be used beneficially within the legal sphere too. Scoping reviews are increasingly considered valid for summarising and integrating primary research (Colquhoun et al., 2014). The general aims of scoping reviews include informing practice, programme and policy development, and providing direction for future research (Arksey & O’Malley, 2005; Colquhoun et al., 2014). Thus, the current scoping review will aim to determine how ACT has been used in the legal sphere to date and how it could potentially be utilised in future research.

Decolonizing Me is a personal act of liberation and a professional and political imperative. I must write this book because I know what it feels like to be brilliant and afraid simultaneously. I know what it means to translate one’s existence to fit into systems never built for us. Moreover, I see the cost of staying silent. This book is my resistance to that silence. On a personal level, decolonizing addresses the fear of speaking out and the resistance towards continuing to be in fear. This is an ongoing battle. On a professional level, I have witnessed the long-term impact of colonization on how people seek therapy, on how therapists are trained, and on how communities are either heard or dismissed in systems of care. I have worked with clients who were not only processing trauma, but also trying to survive under the weight of being misunderstood by institutions, by therapists, and by the very cultures they hoped would help them heal. Unless questioned and reimagined, I have seen how psychological frameworks often replicate the same hierarchies they claim to dismantle. Although dividing the world into "West" and "East" is, on the surface, a broad and stereotypical framework, it nonetheless reflects the persistent struggles and hierarchies shaped by centuries of history. The traditional binary portraying the West as the land of developed democracies and the East as a region of underdeveloped or struggling nations oversimplifies a much more complex global reality. However, even when inaccurate, stereotypes often reveal more profound truths about power, dominance, and historical narrative. In this book, when I refer to "Western superpowers," I am not merely discussing geography or simplistic binaries. Instead, I am pointing to a mindset, a structure of global dominance, that has been embodied by powerful actors across both Western and non-Western nations. These forces, whether from Europe, North America, Russia, or elsewhere, have historically regarded Iran not as a sovereign nation rich in history, culture, and resilience, but as a "bait," an opportunity, a strategic market to control, extract from, and manipulate. This is why I must write Decolonizing Me: to create a space where personal stories and professional insight are braided together. To examine what it means to reclaim one’s voice in the face of long-standing systems of oppression. To offer a framework for understanding how history lives in the body and how healing can only begin when we are honest about the forces that shape our silence.

Through a virtual parent coaching experience featuring Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Parent Meta-Emotion Philosopy (PMEP), effective parent coaching skills are implemented. We anticipate improvements in parent mental well-being and likely reductions in child negative behavior across intervention groups when compared to control group. We anticipate both ACT and PMEP intervention groups to have a similar effect, with a potential synergystic effect in the combined intervention group. Our projected research study aims to contribute to solutions for mothers and their autistic children through ACT and PMEP in a virtual parent training model.

Similar to the popular CTE signing day program that was held recently, in which graduates trained in technical programs sign contracts to work for local companies in various trade industries, this program fills the void of recognition for the many HCPS graduates who commit to serving our country after leaving high school. The event is possible through the collaboration of HCPS school counselors, JROTC instructors, students from the ACE Center at Hermitage culinary and hospitality programs, and the HCPS Department of Workforce and Career Development.

Scoping Review Protocol: Abstract Objective: This proposed scoping review aims to explore the available literature on the use of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) by occupational therapy (OT) practitioners, including how OT practitioners utilize ACT in the evaluation or intervention process, what types of client concerns OT practitioners are using ACT to address, what settings OT practitioners are using ACT in, and what outcomes are being reported. Introduction: ACT is a third-wave cognitive behavioral therapy approach that can be used and has been shown to be effective across a wide range of diagnoses commonly seen by OT practitioners. Given the increased use of ACT among OT practitioners, a comprehensive understanding of the utilization in clinical practice by OT practitioners would benefit OT practitioners, referring healthcare providers and clients and support future research efforts. Inclusion criteria: The proposed scoping review will consider studies that include participants of any age or diagnosis receiving OT services that utilize ACT. All pertinent published studies will be considered without limit on publication dates or restriction on publication language. All primary studies, gray literature, text and opinion papers, and clinical guidelines will be considered. Methods: The proposed scoping review will follow JBI methodology for scoping reviews, and searches will be conducted in MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase, CINAHL (EBSCOHost), Scopus (EBSCOHost), PsycINFO, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global, OTSeeker, OTDBase, and Google Scholar. All relevant studies will be screened by two reviewers independently, and data will be extracted using a standardized tool modified for the proposed review. Results will be presented with frequency tables and narrative summaries.

The environmental performance of organizations is essentially based on the voluntary participation of employees in ecological actions. However, the barriers to these behaviors and the strategies for overcoming them have not been sufficiently studied in the scientific literature. This research aims to fill this gap by exploring the impact of specific barriers to employees' voluntary pro-environmental behaviours, such as perceived autonomy, and how to mitigate it. Indeed, we hypothesize that the ability to imagine a positive eco-sustainable future could mitigate the negative effects of this barrier. Previous studies have shown that when the perception of this ability is reinforced, individuals are more likely to engage in ecological activities. The aim of this research is to assess the extent to which a positive vision of an ecological work environment can reinforce employees' ability to project themselves into this future, and influence their intention and motivation to engage in pro-environmental behaviours voluntarily, by mitigating the negative effects of perceived autonomy.

Why do some politicians offer an overt religious basis for their policies? Overt religious rhetoric can harm a politician’s standing with less religious voters and, in the current American environment, signals shared beliefs, policies, and affiliations with religious conservatives. Increasing polarization and secularization have made positive stereotypes of religious people rarer. Yet, even left-leaning politicians, notably President Joe Biden still use religious rhetoric with their policies. I look for empirical evidence that religious rhetoric can demonstrate a politician’s commitment to promised policies. So, religious rhetoric, when used with a policy promise, might appeal to a less religious constituency which supports that policy because it signals commitment to that policy even if that constituency does not subscribe to the religious ideas. This survey experiment follows up on an earlier experiment. Unlike that experiment, I contrast religious and nonreligious frames for a political promise with a highly polarized topic, abortion, using a national sample, and a federal-level scenario. Respondents self-select into either a pro-life or pro-choice sample. Then respondents read a biography from a hypothetical member of Congress in support of each respondent's own position on abortion. These statements vary based on the presence of no justification, a secular, rights-based, or a religious justification for the policy. The biography also varies between mentioning the hypothetical representative's religious participation or not, for six conditions for both the pro-life and pro-choice samples. Then, respondents will assess how committed they believe the representative to be to the stated policy. I expect that the religious justification will have the highest estimated commitment, particularly when religious participation is mentioned.

In Study 1, we created a new measurement scale, the Competitive and Nurturant Commitment Motivations Scale (CNCMS), to assess motivations for commitment in romantic relationships. We broadly predicted two motivation types based on the Steroid/Peptide (S/P) Theory of Social Bonds (van Anders et al., 2011): competitive commitment motivations and nurturant commitment motivations. As such, we developed a measure with items that reflected competitive and nurturant commitment motivations for romantic relationships. Each item was also designed to fall under one of five facets of commitment outlined in previous research: fidelity, emotional satisfaction, persistence, investment/interdependence, and public declaration. Study 1 results from an Exploratory Factor Analysis with 460 participants (women n = 346, men n = 95, nonbinary/agender/genderfluid n = 15, gender/sex unknown n = 4) supported a two-factor solution for the CNCMS reflecting competitive commitment motivations (CNCMS-C) and nurturant commitment motivations (CNCMS-N). A factor solution along the five facets of commitment was not supported. In the current study, we aim to confirm the two-factor solution for the CNCMS using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) in a new sample of 940 participants (cisgender women n = 323; cisgender men n = 308; gender/sex minorities n = 309). We will also test measurement invariance (configural, metric, and scalar) across cisgender women, cisgender men, and gender/sex minorities to see if the two-factor CNCMS holds up across gender/sex groups. Other goals include testing convergent validity of the CNCMS, comparing the CNCMS with the Investment Model Scale (IMS), and exploring associations between the CNCMS subscales and sexual satisfaction, relationship satisfaction, approach motivations for sex, avoidance motivations for sex, perpetration and experiences of abusive conflict patterns, and attachment style. Finally, we also aim to explore gender/sex group differences in associations between the CNCMS subscales and other measures, but these may be reserved for a follow-up manuscript if appropriate.
