A tableau inversion is a pair of entries in row-standard tableau $T$ that lie in the same column of $T$ yet lack the appropriate relative ordering to make $T$ column-standard. An $i$-inverted Young tableau is a row-standard tableau along with a precisely $i$ inversion pairs. Tableau inversions were originally introduced by Fresse to calculate the Betti numbers of Springer fibers in Type A, with the number of $i$-inverted tableaux that standardize to a fixed standard Young tableau corresponding to a specific Betti number of the associated fiber. In this paper we approach the topic of tableau inversions from a completely combinatorial perspective. We develop formulas enumerating the number of $i$-inverted Young tableaux for a variety of tableaux shapes, not restricting ourselves to inverted tableaux that standardize a specific standard Young tableau, and construct bijections between $i$-inverted Young tableaux of a certain shape with $j$-inverted Young tableaux of different shapes. Finally, we share some the results of a computer program developed to calculate tableaux inversions.

In literature, many important combinatorial properties of subsets of N have been studied both with nonstandard techniques and from the point of view of N. In this thesis we mix these two different approaches in a technique that, at the same time, incorporates nonstandard tools and ultrafilters.

We develop a combinatorial model of the associated Hermite polynomials and their moments, and prove their orthogonality with a sign-reversing involution. We find combinatorial interpretations of the moments as complete matchings, connected complete matchings, oscillating tableaux, and rooted maps and show weight-preserving bijections between these objects. Several identities, linearization formulas, the moment generating function, and a second combinatorial model are also derived.

An explicit lattice point realization is provided for the primary components of an arbitrary binomial ideal in characteristic zero. This decomposition is derived from a characteristic-free combinatorial description of certain primary components of binomial ideals in affine semigroup rings, namely those that are associated to faces of the semigroup. These results are intimately connected to hypergeometric differential equations in several variables.

We show, in great detail, how the perturbative tools of quantum field theory allow one to rigorously obtain: a ``categorified'' Faa di Bruno type formula for multiple composition, an explicit formula for reversion and a proof of Lagrange-Good inversion, all in the setting of multivariable power series. We took great pains to offer a self-contained presentation that, we hope, will provide any mathematician who wishes, an easy access to the wonderland of quantum field theory.

We introduce and study a family of simplicial complexes associated to an arbitrary finite root system and a nonnegative integer parameter m. For m=1, our construction specializes to the (simplicial) generalized associahedra or, equivalently, to the cluster complexes for the cluster algebras of finite type. Our computation of the face numbers and h-vectors of these complexes produces the enumerative invariants defined in other contexts by C.A.Athanasiadis, suggesting links to a host of well studied problems in algebraic combinatorics of finite Coxeter groups, root systems, and hyperplane arrangements. Recurrences satisfied by the face numbers of our complexes lead to combinatorial algorithms for determining Coxeter-theoretic invariants. That is, starting with a Coxeter diagram of a finite Coxeter group, one can compute the Coxeter number, the exponents, and other classical invariants by a recursive procedure that only uses most basic graph-theoretic concepts applied to the input diagram. In types A and B, we rediscover the constructions and results obtained by E.Tzanaki .

We present fully formalized proofs of some central theorems from combinatorics. These are Dilworth's decomposition theorem, Mirsky's theorem, Hall's marriage theorem and the Erd\H{o}s-Szekeres theorem. Dilworth's decomposition theorem is the key result among these. It states that in any finite partially ordered set (poset), the size of a smallest chain cover and a largest antichain are the same. Mirsky's theorem is a dual of Dilworth's decomposition theorem, which states that in any finite poset, the size of a smallest antichain cover and a largest chain are the same. We use Dilworth's theorem in the proofs of Hall's Marriage theorem and the Erd\H{o}s-Szekeres theorem. The combinatorial objects involved in these theorems are sets and sequences. All the proofs are formalized in the Coq proof assistant. We develop a library of definitions and facts that can be used as a framework for formalizing other theorems on finite posets.

We offer the following explanation of the statement of the Kuratowski graph planarity criterion and of 6/7 of the statement of the Robertson-Seymour-Thomas intrinsic linking criterion. Let us call a cell complex 'dichotomial' if to every cell there corresponds a unique cell with the complementary set of vertices. Then every dichotomial cell complex is PL homeomorphic to a sphere; there exist precisely two 3-dimensional dichotomial cell complexes, and their 1-skeleta are K_5 and K_{3,3}; and precisely six 4-dimensional ones, and their 1-skeleta all but one graphs of the Petersen family. In higher dimensions n>2, we observe that in order to characterize those compact n-polyhedra that embed in S^{2n} in terms of finitely many "prohibited minors", it suffices to establish finiteness of the list of all (n-1)-connected n-dimensional finite cell complexes that do not embed in S^{2n} yet all their proper subcomplexes and proper cell-like combinatorial quotients embed there. Our main result is that this list contains the n-skeleta of (2n+1)-dimensional dichotomial cell complexes. The 2-skeleta of 5-dimensional dichotomial cell complexes include (apart from the three joins of the i-skeleta of (2i+2)-simplices) at least ten non-simplicial complexes.

An Horizontal Visibility Graph (for short, HVG) is defined in association with an ordered set of non-negative reals. HVGs realize a methodology in the analysis of time series, their degree distribution being a good discriminator between randomness and chaos [B. Luque, et al., Phys. Rev. E 80 (2009), 046103]. We prove that a graph is an HVG if and only if outerplanar and has a Hamilton path. Therefore, an HVG is a noncrossing graph, as defined in algebraic combinatorics [P. Flajolet and M. Noy, Discrete Math., 204 (1999) 203-229]. Our characterization of HVGs implies a linear time recognition algorithm. Treating ordered sets as words, we characterize subfamilies of HVGs highlighting various connections with combinatorial statistics and introducing the notion of a visible pair. With this technique we determine asymptotically the average number of edges of HVGs.

We establish a relation between the two-party Bell inequalities for two-valued measurements and a high-dimensional convex polytope called the cut polytope in polyhedral combinatorics. Using this relation, we propose a method, triangular elimination, to derive tight Bell inequalities from facets of the cut polytope. This method gives two hundred million inequivalent tight Bell inequalities from currently known results on the cut polytope. In addition, this method gives general formulas which represent families of infinitely many Bell inequalities. These results can be used to examine general properties of Bell inequalities.

We present an alternative construction of Soergel's category of bimodules associated to a reflection faithful representation of a Coxeter system. We show that its objects can be viewed as sheaves on the associated moment graph. We introduce an exact structure and show that Soergel's "special" bimodules are the projective objects. Then we construct the indecomposable projectives by both a global and a local method, discuss a version of the Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture and prove it for universal Coxeter systems.

The partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP) is an important model from statistical mechanics which describes a system of interacting particles hopping left and right on a one-dimensional lattice of $n$ sites. It is partially asymmetric in the sense that the probability of hopping left is $q$ times the probability of hopping right. Additionally, particles may enter from the left with probability $\alpha$ and exit from the right with probability $\beta$. In this paper we prove a close connection between the PASEP and the combinatorics of permutation tableaux. (These tableaux come indirectly from the totally nonnegative part of the Grassmannian, via work of Postnikov, and were studied in a paper of Steingrimsson and the second author.) Namely, we prove that in the long time limit, the probability that the PASEP is in a particular configuration $\tau$ is essentially the generating function for permutation tableaux of shape $\lambda(\tau)$ enumerated according to three statistics. The proof of this result uses a result of Derrida, Evans, Hakim, and Pasquier on the {\it matrix ansatz} for the PASEP model. As an application, we prove some monotonicity results for the PASEP. We also derive some enumerative consequences for permutations enumerated according to various statistics such as weak excedence set, descent set, crossings, and occurences of generalized patterns.

We study relations between the eigenvectors of rational matrix functions on the Riemann sphere. Our main result is that for a subclass of functions that are products of two elementary blocks it is possible to represent these relations in a combinatorial-geometric way using a diagram of a cube. In this representation, vertices of the cube represent eigenvectors, edges are labeled by differences of locations of zeroes and poles of the determinant of our matrix function, and each face corresponds to a particular choice of a coordinate system on the space of such functions. Moreover, for each face this labeling encodes, in a neat and efficient way, a generating function for the expressions of the remaining four eigenvectors that label the opposing face of the cube in terms of the coordinates represented by the chosen face. The main motivation behind this work is that when our matrix is a Lax matrix of a discrete integrable system, such generating functions can be interpreted as Lagrangians of the system, and a choice of a particular face corresponds to a choice of the direction of the motion.

We show that the structure of blocks outside the critical hyperplanes of category O over any symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebra depends only on the corresponding integral Weyl group and its action on the parameters of the Verma modules by giving a combinatorial description of the projective objects. As an application we derive the Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture for non-integral blocks from the integral case in finite and affine situations.

We are interested in generalizing part of the theory of ultrafilters on omega to larger cardinals. Here we set the scene for further investigations introducing properties of ultrafilters in strong sense dual to being normal.

In this paper we introduce a binomial ideal derived from a binary linear code. We present some applications of a Gr\"obner basis of this ideal with respect to a total degree ordering. In the first application we give a decoding method for the code. By associating the code with the set of cycles in a graph, we can solve the problem of finding all codewords of minimal length (minimal cycles in a graph), and show how to find a minimal cycle basis. Finally we discuss some results on the computation of the Gr\"obner basis.

In this paper, we continue the development of a new combinatorial model for the irreducible characters of a complex semisimple Lie group. This model, which will be referred to as the alcove path model, can be viewed as a discrete counterpart to the Littelmann path model. It leads to an extensive generalization of the combinatorics of irreducible characters from Lie type A (where the combinatorics is based on Young tableaux, for instance) to arbitrary type. The main results of this paper are: (1) a combinatorial description of the crystal graphs corresponding to the irreducible representations (this result includes a transparent proof, based on the Yang-Baxter equation, of the fact that the mentioned description does not depend on the choice involved in our model); (2) a combinatorial realization of Lusztig's involution on the canonical basis (this involution exhibits the crystals as self-dual posets, corresponds to the action of the longest Weyl group element on an irreducible representation, and generalizes Schutzenberger's involution on tableaux); (3) an analog for arbitrary root systems, based on the Yang-Baxter equation, of Schutzenberger's sliding algorithm, which is also known as jeu de taquin (this algorithm has many applications to the representation theory of the Lie algebra of type A).

We develop protocols for preparing a GHZ state and, in general,a pure multi-partite maximally entangled state in a distributed network with apriori quantum entanglement between agents using classical communication and local operations. We investigate and characterize the minimal combinatorics of the sharing of EPR pairs required amongst agents in a network for the creation of multi-partite entanglement. We also characterize the minimal combinatorics of agents in the creation of pure maximal multi-partite entanglement amongst the set $N$ of $n$ agents in a network using apriori multi-partite entanglement states amongst subsets of $N$. We propose protocols for establishing multi-partite entanglement in the above cases.

We solve the normal ordering problem for (A* A)^n where A* (resp. A) are one mode deformed bosonic creation (resp. annihilation) operators satisfying [A,A*]=[N+1]-[N]. The solution generalizes results known for canonical and q-bosons. It involves combinatorial polynomials in the number operator N for which the generating functions and explicit expressions are found. Simple deformations provide examples of the method.

We investigate the possibility that stringy nonperturbative effects appear as holes in the world-sheet. We focus on the case of Dirichlet string theory, which we argue should be formulated differently than in previous work, and we find that the effects of boundaries are naturally weighted by $e^{-O(1/g_{\rm st})}$.

We present an explicit combinatorial realization of the commutor in the category of crystals which was first studied by Henriques and Kamnitzer. Our realization is based on certain local moves defined by van Leeuwen.

This paper illustrates the combinatorial approach to vertex algebra - study of vertex algebras presented by generators and relations. A necessary ingredient of this method is the notion of free vertex algebra. Borcherds \cite{bor} was the first to note that free vertex algebras do not exist in general. The reason for this is that vertex algebras do not form a variety of algebras, because the locality axiom (see sec 2 below) is not an identity. However, a certain subcategory of vertex algebras, obtained by restricting the order of locality of generators, has a universal object, which we call the free vertex algebra corresponding to the given locality bound. In [J. of Algebra, 217(2):496-527] some free vertex algebras were constructed and in certain special cases their linear bases were found. In this paper we generalize this construction and find linear bases of an arbitrary free vertex algebra. It turns out that free vertex algebras are closely related to the vertex algebras corresponding to integer lattices. The latter algebras play a very important role in different areas of mathematics and physics. Here we explore the relation between free vertex algebras and lattice vertex algebras in much detail. These results comply with the use of the word "free" in physical literature refering to some elements of lattice vertex algebras, like in "free field", "free bozon" or "free fermion". Among other things, we find a nice presentation of lattice vertex algebras in terms of generators and relations, thus giving an alternative construction of these algebras without using vertex operators. We remark that our construction works in a very general setting; we do not assume the lattice to be positive definite, neither non-degenerate, nor of a finite rank.

We derive a series of results on random walks on a d-dimensional hypercubic lattice (lattice paths). We introduce the notions of terse and simple paths corresponding to the path having no backtracking parts (spikes). These paths label equivalence classes which allow a rearrangement of the sum over paths. The basic combinatorial quantities of this construction are given. These formulas are useful when performing strong coupling (hopping parameter) expansions of lattice models. Some applications are described.

In this paper we study the topology of the strata, indexed by number partitions $\lambda$, in the natural stratification of the space of monic hyperbolic polynomials of degree $n$. We prove stabilization theorems for removing an independent block or an independent relation in $\lambda$. We also prove contractibility of the one-point compactifications of the strata indexed by a large class of number partitions, including $\lambda=(k^m,1^r)$, for $m\geq 2$. Furthermore, we study the maps between the homology groups of the strata, induced by imposing additional relations (resonances) on the number partition $\lambda$, or by merging some of the blocks of $\lambda$.
