On 21 May 2013, DGSTJFD requested advice from the Canadian National Lead of The Technical Cooperation Panel (TTCP) Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence(C3I) Action Group 2 (AG2) on Cloud Computing regarding how cloud computing could be used in a tactical environment to garner important Command and Control (C2) and situational awareness information. In response to this request, and based on the recommendations from an AG2 Technical Report on coalition cloud computing, scientists in the Cyber Operations and Signals Warfare (COSW) Section of Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC)contracted a preliminary study to assess the use of tactical clouds in enhancing warfighter effectiveness. The study produced a number of diverse use-cases, architectures, and scenarios for tactical cloud computing.

Resource scheduling in infrastructure as a service (IaaS) is one of the keys for large-scale Cloud applications. Extensive research on all issues in real environment is extremely difficult because it requires developers to consider network infrastructure and the environment, which may be beyond the control. In addition, the network conditions cannot be controlled or predicted. Performance evaluations of workload models and Cloud provisioning algorithms in a repeatable manner under different configurations are difficult. Therefore, simulators are developed. To understand and apply better the state-of-the-art of cloud computing simulators, and to improve them, we study four known open-source simulators. They are compared in terms of architecture, modeling elements, simulation process, performance metrics and scalability in performance. Finally, a few challenging issues as future research trends are outlined.

Highly-parallel graphics processing units (GPUs) can improve the speed of micromagnetic simulations significantly as compared to conventional computing using central processing units (CPUs). We present a strategy for performing GPU-accelerated micromagnetic simulations by utilizing cost-effective GPU access offered by cloud computing services with an open-source Python-based program for running the MuMax3 micromagnetics code remotely. We analyze the scaling and cost benefits of using cloud computing for micromagnetics.

The Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Data and Information System supports an international science and education program with capabilities to accept local environment observations, archive, display and visualize them along with global satellite observations. Since its inception twenty years ago, the Web and database system has been upgraded periodically to accommodate the changes in technology and the steady growth of GLOBEs education community and collection of observations. Recently, near the end-of-life of the system hardware, new commercial computer platform options were explored and a decision made to utilize Cloud services. Now the GLOBE DIS has been fully deployed and maintained using Amazon Cloud services for over two years now. This paper reviews the early risks, actual challenges, and some unexpected findings as a result of the GLOBE DIS migration. We describe the plans, cost drivers and estimates, highlight adjustments that were made and suggest improvements. We present the trade studies for provisioning, for load balancing, networks, processing, storage, as well as production, staging and backup systems. We outline the migration teams skills and required level of effort for transition, and resulting changes in the overall maintenance and operations activities. Examples include incremental adjustments to processing capacity and frequency of backups, and efforts previously expended on hardware maintenance that were refocused onto application-specific enhancements.

Cloud computing offers the economic benefit of on-demand resource allocation to meet changing enterprise computing needs. However, the flexibility of cloud computing is disadvantaged when compared to traditional hosting in providing predictable application and service performance. Cloud computing relies on resource scheduling in a virtualized network-centric server environment, which makes static performance analysis infeasible. We developed a discrete event simulation model to evaluate the overall effectiveness of organizations in executing their workflow in traditional and cloud computing architectures. The two part model framework characterizes both the demand using a probability distribution for each type of service request as well as enterprise computing resource constraints. Our simulations provide quantitative analysis to design and provision computing architectures that maximize overall mission effectiveness. We share our analysis of key resource constraints in cloud computing architectures and findings on the appropriateness of cloud computing in various applications.

Computer hardware costs are the limiting factor in producing highly accurate radiation dose calculations on convenient time scales. Because of this, large-scale, full Monte Carlo simulations and other resource intensive algorithms are often considered infeasible for clinical settings. The emerging cloud computing paradigm promises to fundamentally alter the economics of such calculations by providing relatively cheap, on-demand, pay-as-you-go computing resources over the Internet. We believe that cloud computing will usher in a new era, in which very large scale calculations will be routinely performed by clinics and researchers using cloud-based resources. In this research, several proof-of-concept radiation therapy calculations were successfully performed on a cloud-based virtual Monte Carlo cluster. Performance evaluations were made of a distributed processing framework developed specifically for this project. The expected 1/n performance was observed with some caveats. The economics of cloud-based virtual computing clusters versus traditional in-house hardware is also discussed. For most situations, cloud computing can provide a substantial cost savings for distributed calculations.

Pakistan’s proximity to the Strait of Hormuz, through which millions of barrels of oil is shipped per day, makes it a gateway to Central Asian countries. The Pakistan coastline stretches to almost 1,000 kilometers and has an exclusive economic zone of 290,000 km2. As a flag bearer of protecting the country’s sea lines of communication and safeguarding its maritime territories, the Pakistan Navy is in the continuous process of modernization. Although a robust command and control structure exists for the accomplishment of peacetime and wartime objectives, there is still a need to adopt up-to-date procedures that can ensure the two-way exchange of information in near real-time and provide access to information from anywhere around the globe. This thesis explores the peculiarities of cloud computing and its potential utility to the Pakistan Navy. After an in-depth analysis of the country’s information technology environment, the scope and utility of cloud computing in the country, and the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Navy, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology cloud architectures, a framework has been laid out for adopting cloud computing in the Pakistan Navy.

This talk is a brief introduction to the exploratory cloud prototypes currently underway within ESDIS and the implications of cloud technologies on existing systems.

As the popularity of cloud computing is increasing, mobile devices at any time can store or retrieve personal information from anywhere. As a result, the issue of data protection in the mobile cloud is becoming increasingly severe and prevents more mobile cloud computing. There are important studies that have been carried out to strengthen the protection of the cloud. Most of them, however, are not applicable to mobile clouds, as mobile devices have restricted computing resources and power. In this paper, I propose a lightweight data sharing scheme LDSS for mobile cloud computing. It uses CP ABE Cipher text Policy Attribute Based Encryption , an access control technology used in basic cloud atmosphere, but changes the structure of access control tree to make it suitable for mobile cloud environments. LDSS moves a large portion of the computational rigorous access control tree transformation in CP ABE Cipher text Policy Attribute Based Encryption from mobile devices to external proxy servers. Also, to reduce the user revocation cost, it introduces attribute description fields to implement lazy revocation, which is a pointed issue in program based CP ABE Cipher text Policy Attribute Based Encryption systems. Maturing virtualization in information technology systems has enabled increased implementations of the cloud com-puting paradigm, dissolving the need to co-locate user and computing power by providing desired services through the network. This thesis researches the support that current network modeling and simulation applications can provide to IT projects in planning, implementing and maintaining networks for cloud solutions. A problem-appropriate do-main model and subsequent requirements are developed for the assessment of several network modeling and simulation tools, which leads to the identification of a capability gap precluding the use of such tools in early stages of cloud computing projects. Consequently, a practical, modular designed methodology is proposed to measure the essential properties necessary for developing appropriate cloud computing network traffic models. The conducted proof-of-concept experiment applied to a virtual desktop environment finds the proposed methodology suitable and problem-appropriate, and results in recommended steps to close the identified capability gap.

Abstract Noncontact electrocardiogram (ECG) measurement technique has gained popularity these days owing to its noninvasive features and convenience in daily life use. This paper presents mobile cloud computing for a healthcare system where a noncontact ECG measurement method is employed to capture biomedical signals from users. Healthcare service is provided to continuously collect biomedical signals from multiple locations. To observe and analyze the ECG signals in real time, a mobile device is used as a mobile monitoring terminal. In addition, a personalized healthcare assistant is installed on the mobile device; several healthcare features such as health status summaries, medication QR code scanning, and reminders are integrated into the mobile application. Health data are being synchronized into the healthcare cloud computing service (Web server system and Web server dataset) to ensure a seamless healthcare monitoring system and anytime and anywhere coverage of network connection is available. Together with a Web page application, medical data are easily accessed by medical professionals or family members. Web page performance evaluation was conducted to ensure minimal Web server latency. The system demonstrates better availability of off-site and up-to-the-minute patient data, which can help detect health problems early and keep elderly patients out of the emergency room, thus providing a better and more comprehensive healthcare cloud computing service.

A crucial element in detecting unusual network system behavior is the network intrusion detection system (NIDS), which also helps to stop network attacks from happening. Despite the fact that a great deal of machine learning techniques has been used in intrusion detection, current solutions still struggle to provide accurate classification results. Furthermore, when dealing with imbalanced multi-category traffic data, a single classifier may not be able to produce a superior. Particularly, internet of things (IoT) gadgets is now a commonplace aspect of life. On the other hand, some problems are becoming worse and lack clear remedies. Convergence, communication speed, and security between various IoT devices are among the primary concerns. In order to achieve this goal, an enhanced artificial bee colony technique utilizing binary search equations and neural networks—known as the (BABCN) algorithm for intrusion detection in terms of convergence and communication speed—is presented in this study. The artificial bee is improved by the depth-first search framework and binary search equations upon which the BABCN method is based. The suggested approach has a good ability to detect intrusions in the network and enhances categorization, according to the findings obtained by using the NSL-KDD dataset.

This study focuses on the influence of cloud computing adaption on organization performance with particular reference to selected Commercial Banks in Ilala Municipality. Specifically, the study aimed to assess how cloud computing increases efficiency of bank operations, to examine the effectiveness of cloud computing on enhancing customer satisfaction and to identify the challenges and opportunities encountering Commercial Banks in adopting and using cloud computing services. A sample of 70 respondents was drawn from the study population using simple random and purposive sampling techniques. Research questionnaire was applied in data collection and the collected data were analyzed using quantitative research techniques. Frequencies and percentages were computed to establish descriptive information of the collected data. Multiple regression statistical analysis with the help of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) was employed to analyse the collected data. Results revealed that cloud computing is easy to use in banking operations, it shows that cloud computing in banks is accurate in data processing whereby to improve efficiency cloud technology can bring together multiple data and operational systems and increase efficiency in bank operations. Basing on the findings the study recommends that cloud computing service providers solve the issues that hamper the adoption of cloud computing. The government should create policies on cloud computing to be taught from schools so that people become aware of cloud computing. Seminars and events should be organized so that different kinds of individuals can be educated and informed about different ideas concerning cloud computing adaptation. The study recommends for further studies that cloud computing is a rapidly emerging technology in many companies. It would be interesting to concentrate on other industries that may have a greater demand for information management and so need the usage of cloud computing.

In May 2016 IBM released access to its 5-qubit quantum computer to the scientific community, its "IBM Quantum Experience" since acquiring over 25,000 users from students, educators and researchers around the globe. In the short time since the "IBM Quantum Experience" became available, a flurry of research results on 5-qubit systems have been published derived from the platform hardware. Quintuple is an open-source object-oriented Python module implementing the simulation of the "IBM Quantum Experience" hardware. Quintuple quantum algorithms can be programmed and run via a custom language fully compatible with the "IBM Quantum Experience" or in pure Python. Over 40 example programs are provided with expected results, including Grover's Algorithm and the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm. Quintuple contributes to the study of 5-qubit systems and the development and debugging of quantum algorithms for deployment on the "IBM Quantum Experience" hardware.

An emerging requirement for 5G systems is the ability to provide wireless ultra-reliable communication (URC) services with close-to-full availability for cloud-based applications. Among such applications, a prominent role is expected to be played by mobile cloud computing (MCC), that is, by the offloading of computationally intensive tasks from mobile devices to the cloud. MCC allows battery-limited devices to run sophisticated applications, such as for gaming or for the "tactile" internet. This paper proposes to apply the framework of reliable service composition to the problem of optimal task offloading in MCC over fading channels, with the aim of providing layered, or composable, services at differentiated reliability levels. Inter-layer optimization problems, encompassing offloading decisions and communication resources, are formulated and addressed by means of successive convex approximation methods. The numerical results demonstrate the energy savings that can be obtained by a joint allocation of computing and communication resources, as well as the advantages of layered coding at the physical layer and the impact of channel conditions on the offloading decisions.

In spite of past works, our scheme supports effective and secure dynamic operations on data blocks such as data insertion, deletion and modification. In contrast to traditional solutions, where the IT services are under proper physical, logical and personnel controls, cloud computing moves the application software and databases to the large data centers, where the data management and services may not be absolutely truthful. This effective security and performance analysis describes that the proposed scheme is extremely flexible against malicious data modification, convoluted failures and server clouding attacks.

In addition, from the military perspective, the benefits of cloud computing were analyzed from a study of the U.S. Department of Defense. Then, using cloud computing–related documents from the United States, a list of recommended policy statements were developed for the SAF to consider for guidance as it migrates to greater adoption of cloud-based computing in support of its operations. These policy statements encompass the various aspects of information security deemed most important to the SAF's adoption of a cloud-based computing environment.
