Considering a "random walk in a random environment" in a topologically closed circuit, we explore the implications of the percolation and sliding transitions for its relaxation modes. A complementary question regarding the "delocalization" of eigenstates of non-hermitian Hamiltonians has been addressed by Hatano, Nelson, and followers. But we show that for a conservative stochastic process the implied spectral properties are dramatically different. In particular we determine the threshold for under-damped relaxation, and observe "complexity saturation" as the bias is increased.

While batteries offer electronic source and sink in electronic devices, atomic analogues of source and sink and their theoretical descriptions have been a challenge in cold-atom systems. Here we consider dynamically emerged local potentials as controllable source and sink for bosonic atoms. Although a sink potential can collect bosons in equlibrium and indicate its usefulness in the adiabatic limit, sudden switching of the potential exhibits low effectiveness in pushing bosons into it. This is due to conservation of energy and particle in isolated systems such as cold atoms. By varying the potential depth and interaction strength, the systems can further exhibit averse response, where a deeper emerged potential attracts less bosonic atoms into it. To explore possibilities for improving the effectiveness, we investigate what types of system-environment coupling can help bring bosons into a dynamically emerged sink, and a Lindblad operator corresponding to local cooling is found to serve the purpose.

The ultimate goal of the total program is to develop cryocoolers which operate at 4.2K with a heat load of at least 10 milliwatts. The goal of this Phase I effort is to conduct a conceptual study of small, low power, very low magnetic signature, lightweight, efficient closed cycle cryocoolers suitable for use with superconductive and other low temperature electronic circuits and systems. For this initial phase, the cryocoolers are to produce 50 milliwatts at 10K or less with electrical input power not to exceed 250 watts. This study has examined various thermodynamic approaches and modeling. Regenerator geometries have been examined and regenerator materials have been screened, selected, and evaluated. Several configurations have been evaluated. Preliminary vibration and magnetic signature analyses have been performed on the most promising concepts. Three primary concepts were selected. These are small Macor concept, a large Macor concept and a Nylon concept. All have input power requirements between 140 and 210 watts. The small Macor concept is recommended for Phase II design and development because of its small size, ceramic construction and higher operating speed. An integral drive is recommended. Conclusions are reached that the power goal is achievable as is the temperature fluctuation goal, but the vibration and magnetic signature goals require further definition and analysis. Other critical areas identified include helium permeation and ceramic residual iron.

An experimentally inspired model is constructed and rigorously solved from the Hamiltonian level where a dc circular spontaneous flow exists in absence of a magnetic field, irrespective of presence of dissipation causing otherwise proper relaxation. The flow causes a spontaneous unidirectional transfer of heat from one bath to another one, even against temperature step. This is what is explicitly forbidden by the Clausius form of the Second law of thermodynamics. The unidirectionality of the flow is caused by that of spontaneous processes known to bear this property since their introduction by Einstein. The model slightly improves the previous one (\v{C}\'{a}pek & Sheehan 2002), describes a realistic plasma system for which experimental results violating the second law were announced, and the result obtained fully supports the experimental conclusions (Sheehan 1995). Analytical proof of the violation is supported by numerical results. All mathematical details are exposed, two fully independent types of mathematical arguments behind starting equations are invoked, and no approximations that could be made responsible for the striking conclusions are used. It shows how the physics beyond the Second law is still little understood.

In this paper we consider a family of dynamical systems that we call "arabesques", defined as closed chains of 2-element negative circuits. An $n$-dimensional arabesque system has $n$ 2-element circuits, but in addition, it displays by construction, two $n$-element circuits which are both positive vs one positive and one negative, depending on the parity (even or odd) of the dimension $n$. In view of the absence of diagonal terms in their Jacobian matrices, all these dynamical systems are conservative and consequently, they can not possess any attractor. First, we analyze a linear variant of them which we call "arabesque 0" or for short "A0". For increasing dimensions, the trajectories are increasingly complex open tori. Next, we inserted a single cubic nonlinearity that does not affect the signs of its circuits (that we call "arabesque 1" or for short "A1"). These systems have three steady states, whatever the dimension is, in agreement with the order of the nonlinearity. All three are unstable, as there can not be any attractor in their state-space. The 3D variant (that we call for short "A1\_3D") has been analyzed in some detail and found to display a complex mixed set of quasi-periodic and chaotic trajectories. Inserting $n$ cubic nonlinearities (one per equation) in the same way as above, we generate systems "A2\_$n$D". A2\_3D behaves essentially as A1\_3D, in agreement with the fact that the signs of the circuits remain identical. A2\_4D, as well as other arabesque systems with even dimension, has two positive $n$-circuits and nine steady states. Finally, we investigate and compare the complex dynamics of this family of systems in terms of their symmetries.

A fabricated MACOR cold end including a metallic coating to prevent helium permeation and a fabricated die post displacer support bearing were combined with a compressor and motor which are standard CTI-CRYOGENICS products. A mechanical test was performed on the test cryocooler to determine that the mechanical test was performed on the test cryocooler to determine that the MACOR displacer was successfully guided by the die post bearing. Thermodynamic tests were conducted to determine the lowest temperature of the 4th (coldest) stage as a function of operating speed, helium charge pressure, 4th stage electrical heat load, and transfer tube diameter. Cooldown and steady state results are reported. Results indicate a low temperature limit of approximately 95K with the current test hardware. Although this represents an improvement from 122K during the program, a resizing will be necessary to reach 10K. The die post displacer support bearing and the MACOR cold finger construction are mechanically satisfactory.

Both current mode control and voltage mode control are addressed in these models. Based on these models, detailed nonlinear and linearized sampled-data dynamics are derived. Asymptotic orbital stability is analyzed. Audio-susceptibility and output impedance are derived. In this approach, discontinuous conduction mode and current mode control can be analyzed systematically without special effort. A companion paper addresses the same issues for the power stage of a PWM DC-DC converter.

The writer of the following letters is a young woman who lost her husband in a railroad accident and went to Denver to seek support for herself and her two-year-old daughter, Jerrine. Turning her hand to the nearest work, she went out by the day as house-cleaner and laundress. Later, seeking to better herself, she accepted employment as a housekeeper for a well-to-do Scotch cattle-man, Mr. Stewart, who had taken up a quarter-section in Wyoming. The letters, written through several years to a former employer in Denver, tell the story of her new life in the new country. They are political, poetical and sermon all at the same time; but in the milieu in which she lectured, they were a critically important part of the abolitionist movement years before the contributions of others such as Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth. Her speeches and essays espoused a return to Christian values and morality, but also proposed fundamental changes in gender roles in the midst of tremendous public opposition to the rights of blacks and of women. 5Letters on an Elk Hunt

This is a sequel to Letters of a Woman Homesteader in which Elinore Rupert (Pruitt) Stewart describes her arrival and early years on a Burntfork Wyoming ranch in 1909-1913. The letters are written to her elderly friend, Mrs. Coney, in Denver. In the present collection of letters, Elinore describes a lively excursion on horseback and wagon into the Wyoming wilderness during July-October 1914. Her traveling companions are her husband “Mr. Stewart,” their three oldest children, and kind-hearted, opinionated neighbor Mrs. O’Shaughnessy. Mr. Haynes (organizer of the hunt) and his friend, Mr. Struble (the cheerful big man of the party) lead the group, and are also joined by physician Dr. Teschall, “a moving-picture man” Mr. Harkrudder, Professor Glenholdt seeking “the tip-end bone of the tail of a brontosaurus” and his students (“two geological fellows” who “talk of nothing but strata and formation”). Also joining the group is Mr. Murry with his tiresome accordion.<br><br>Although some hunting is accomplished on the trip, the overarching focus of Elinore’s letters is on descriptions of awe-inspiring Wyoming scenery and the interesting people she encounters. With her familiar wit and wisdom, Elinore also writes of tragedies and romances she observes during her trip -- that is, whenever Elinore’s effort to observe is not thwarted by “the good mon” Mr. Stewart. In one letter Elinore complains to Mrs. Coney that “Mr. Stewart is the queerest man: instead of letting me enjoy the tableau [the reunion of two long-lost lovers], he solemnly drove on, saying he would not want any one gawking at him if he were the happy man. Anyway, he couldn’t urge Chub [the horse] fast enough to prevent my seeing and hearing what I’ve told you.”<br><br>By the time the adventurers are homeward bound with their supply of elk meat, Elinore is homesick for her youngest child, Junior, at home with his grandmother; Mrs. O’Shaughnessy has taken in two young orphans; and quiet, young Mr. Haynes complains good-naturedly about having to travel along with a rolling nursery.<br><br>Elinore’s letters capture an interesting transition point in history. People traveled by horse and wagon, there were cowboys and cattle stampedes, and medical care was rustic. At the same time, automobiles and modern medicine, archeology and motion picture making were entering the scene and war was commencing in Europe.
