1On Classical And Quantum Effects At Scattering Of Fast Charged Particles In Ultrathin Crystal

By

Classical and quantum properties of scattering of charged particles in ultrathin crystals are considered. A comparison is made of these two ways of study of scattering process. In the classical consideration we remark the appearance of sharp maxima that is referred to the manifestation of the rainbow scattering phenomenon and in quantum case we show the sharp maxima that arise from the interference of single electrons on numerous crystal planes, that can be expressed in the terms of reciprocal lattice vectors. We show that for some parameters quantum predictions substantially differ from the classical ones. Estimated is the influence of the beam divergence on the possibility of experimental observation of the studied effects.

2Spectral Properties Of Charged Particles In A Classical Finite Two-dimensional System

By

We present a study of the spectral properties like the energy spectrum, the eigenmodes and density of states of a classical finite system of two-dimensional (2D) charged particles which are confined by a quadratic potential. Using the method of Newton optimization we obtain the ground state and the metastable states. For a given configuration the eigenvectors and eigenfrequencies for the normal modes are obtained using the Householder diagonalization technique for the dynamical matrix whose elements are the second derivative of the potential energy. For small clusters the lowest excitation corresponds to an intershell rotation. The energy barrier for such rotations is calculated. For large clusters the lowest excitation consists of a vortex/anti-vortex pair. The Lindeman melting criterion is used to calculate the order-disorder transition temperature for intershell rotation and intershell diffusion. The value of the transition temperature at which intershell rotation becomes possible depends very much on the configuration of the cluster, i.e. the distribution of the particles between the different shells. Magic numbers are associated to clusters which are most stable against intershell rotation. The specific heat of the cluster is also calculated using

3Local Equilibria And State Transfer Of Charged Classical Particles On A Helix In An Electric Field

By

We explore the effects of a homogeneous external electric field on the static properties and dynamical behavior of two charged particles confined to a helix. In contrast to the field-free setup which provides a separation of the center-of-mass and relative motion, the existence of an external force perpendicular to the helix axis couples the center-of-mass to the relative degree of freedom leading to equilibria with a localized center of mass. By tuning the external field various fixed points are created and/or annihilated through different bifurcation scenarios. We provide a detailed analysis of these bifurcations based on which we demonstrate a robust state transfer between essentially arbitrary equilibrium configurations of the two charges that can be induced by making the external force time-dependent.

4Nonexistence Of Classical Diamagnetism And Nonequilibrium Fluctuation Theorems For Charged Particles On A Curved Surface

By

We show that the classical Langevin dynamics for a charged particle on a closed curved surface in a time-independent magnetic field leads to the canonical distribution in the long time limit. Thus the Bohr-van Leeuwen theorem holds even for a finite system without any boundary and the average magnetic moment is zero. This is contrary to the recent claim by Kumar and Kumar (EPL, {\bf 86} (2009) 17001), obtained from numerical analysis of Langevin dynamics, that a classical charged particle on the surface of a sphere in the presence of a magnetic field has a nonzero average diamagnetic moment. We extend our analysis to a many-particle system on a curved surface and show that the nonequilibrium fluctuation theorems also hold in this geometry.

5Classical Relativistic Systems Of Charged Particles In The Front Form Of Dynamics And The Liouville Equation

By

Classical relativistic system of point particles coupled with an electromagnetic field is considered in the three-dimensional representation. The gauge freedom connected with the chronometrical invariance of the four-dimensional description is reduced by use of the geometrical concept of the forms of relativistic dynamics. The remainder gauge degrees of freedom of the electromagnetic potential are analysed within the framework of Dirac's constrained Hamiltonian mechanics in the front form of dynamics. The results are implemented to the problems of relativistic statistical mechanics. Based on the corresponding Liouville equation the classical partition function of the system is written down in a gauge-invariant manner and an integration over field variables is performed.

7Exact Solution Of The EM Radiation-reaction Problem For Classical Finite-size And Lorentzian Charged Particles

By

An exact solution is given to the classical electromagnetic (EM) radiation-reaction (RR) problem, originally posed by Lorentz. This refers to the dynamics of classical non-rotating and quasi-rigid finite size particles subject to an external prescribed EM field. A variational formulation of the problem is presented. It is shown that a covariant representation for the EM potential of the self-field generated by the extended charge can be uniquely determined, consistent with the principles of classical electrodynamics and relativity. By construction, the retarded self 4-potential does not possess any divergence, contrary to the case of point charges. As a fundamental consequence, based on Hamilton variational principle, an exact representation is obtained for the relativistic equation describing the dynamics of a finite-size charged particle (RR equation), which is shown to be realized by a second-order delay-type ODE. Such equation is proved to apply also to the treatment of Lorentzian particles, i.e., point-masses with finite-size charge distributions, and to recover the usual LAD equation in a suitable asymptotic approximation. Remarkably, the RR equation admits both standard Lagrangian and conservative forms, expressed respectively in terms of a non-local effective Lagrangian and a stress-energy tensor. Finally, consistent with the Newton principle of determinacy, it is proved that the corresponding initial-value problem admits a local existence and uniqueness theorem, namely it defines a classical dynamical system.

8Quantum And Classical Dissipation Of Charged Particles

By

A Hamiltonian approach is presented to study the two dimensional motion of damped electric charges in time dependent electromagnetic fields. The classical and the corresponding quantum mechanical problems are solved for particular cases using canonical transformations applied to Hamiltonians for a particle with variable mass. The Green's function is constructed and, from it, the motion of a Gaussian wave packet is studied in detail.

9On The Equivalence Principle And Gravitational And Inertial Mass Relation Of Classical Charged Particles

By

We show that the locally constant force necessary to get a stable hyperbolic motion regime for classical charged point particles, actually, is a combination of an applied external force and of the electromagnetic radiation reaction force. It implies, as the strong Equivalence Principle is valid, that the passive gravitational mass of a charged point particle should be slight greater than its inertial mass. An interesting new feature that emerges from the unexpected behavior of the gravitational and inertial mass relation, for classical charged particles, at very strong gravitational field, is the existence of a critical, particle dependent, gravitational field value that signs the validity domain of the strong Equivalence Principle. For electron and proton, these critical field values are $g_{c}\simeq 4.8\times 10^{31}m/s^{2}$ and $g_{c}\simeq 8.8\times 10^{34}m/s^{2}$, respectively.

10Radiation Reaction On Charged Particles In Three-dimensional Motion In Classical And Quantum Electrodynamics

By

We extend our previous work (see arXiv:quant-ph/0501026), which compared the predictions of quantum electrodynamics concerning radiation reaction with those of the Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac theory for a charged particle in linear motion. Specifically, we calculate the predictions for the change in position of a charged scalar particle, moving in three-dimensional space, due to the effect of radiation reaction in the one-photon-emission process in quantum electrodynamics. The scalar particle is assumed to be accelerated for a finite period of time by a three-dimensional electromagnetic potential dependent only on one of the spacetime coordinates. We perform this calculation in the $\hbar\to 0$ limit and show that the change in position agrees with that obtained in classical electrodynamics with the Lorentz-Dirac force treated as a perturbation. We also show for a time-dependent but space-independent electromagnetic potential that the forward-scattering amplitude at order $e^2$ does not contribute to the position change in the $\hbar \to 0$ limit after the mass renormalization is taken into account.

11Wigner Quasi-distribution Function For Charged Particles In Classical Electromagnetic Fields

By

A gauge-invariant Wigner quasi-distribution function for charged particles in classical electromagnetic fields is derived in a rigorous way. Its relation to the axial gauge is discussed, as well as the relation between the kinetic and canonical momenta in the Wigner representation. Gauge-invariant quantum analogs of Hamilton-Jacobi and Boltzmann kinetic equations are formulated for arbitrary classical electromagnetic fields in terms of the "slashed" derivatives and momenta, introduced for this purpose. The kinetic meaning of these slashed quantities is discussed. We introduce gauge-invariant conditional moments and use them to derive a kinetic momentum continuity equation. This equation provides us with a hydrodynamic representation for quantum transport processes and a definition of the "collision force". The hydrodynamic equation is applied for the rotation part of the electron motion. The theory is illustrated by its application in three examples. These are: Wigner quasi-distribution function and equations for an electron in a magnetic field and harmonic potential; Wigner quasi-distribution function for a charged particle in periodic systems using the kq representation; two Wigner quasi-distribution functions for heavy-mass polaron in an electric field.

12Stopping Of Charged Particles In A Magnetized Classical Plasma

By

The analytical and numerical investigations of the energy loss rate of the test particle in a magnetized electron plasma are developed on the basis of the Vlasov-Poisson equations, and the main results are presented. The Larmor rotation of a test particle in a magnetic field is taken into account. The analysis is based on the assumption that the energy variation of the test particle is much less than its kinetic energy. The obtained general expression for stopping power is analyzed for three cases: (i) the particle moves through a collisionless plasma in a strong homogeneous magnetic field; (ii) the fast particle moves through a magnetized collisionless plasma along the magnetic field; and (iii) the particle moves through a magnetized collisional plasma across a magnetic field. Calculations are carried out for the arbitrary test particle velocities in the first case, and for fast particles in the second and third cases. It is shown that the rate at which a fast test particle loses energy while moving across a magnetic field may be much higher than the loss in the case of motion through plasma without magnetic field.
