The problem is that while you were busy responding to all of the urgent stimuli in your environment, you were neglecting the less urgent, but much more important work that will add true, long-term value.Whether you work in an office or on your own, it's critical that you learn to build barriers around your time and dedicate focused efforts to your most important work. The best way I've discovered to do this is to establish chunks of time dedicated to specific tasks.What are time chunks?While I am a big fan of making lists for tasks (and am a big adherent to the GTD philosophy), I find that my calendar is often my friend when I'm trying to tackle large, complex projects. As such, whenever I have ongoing work that will require deep, focused effort I tend to block off time on my calendar to work on them.How do you set them?1. Look at your current projects, and choose one that will take a lot of deep, focused effort over a period of a few weeks or months.2. Look at your calendar for a few open slots this week, and choose one that will give you plenty of time to focus on the project.3. Block off the time on the calendar, with the title of the event being the project name or problem you'll be working on. This is important, because without something on your calendar your time will always be negotiable.4. Stick with the plan. Don't fall prey to temptation at the last minute, or compromise in order to squeeze in a meeting. Sure, there will be exceptions, but in general try to treat this time chunk just like you would a meeting with someone you respect. (It is, after all, a meeting with yourself.)5. Spend the last five minutes of your time chunk determining where you'll go next with the project. Make sure that you have a clear starting point the next time you pick up your work, as that will make it much easier to gain traction and use your time wisely.6. At the end of every time chunk, set your next one. Look for an opening in your calendar when you can continue your progress, while you have some momentum.It may work best for you to have pre-established chunks of time on your calendar for specific tasks. We present a method for parallel block-sparse matrix-matrix multiplication on distributed memory clusters. By using a quadtree matrix representation, data locality is exploited without prior information about the matrix sparsity pattern. A distributed quadtree matrix representation is straightforward to implement due to our recent development of the Chunks and Tasks programming model [Parallel Comput. 40, 328 (2014)]. The quadtree representation combined with the Chunks and Tasks model leads to favorable weak and strong scaling of the communication cost with the number of processes, as shown both theoretically and in numerical experiments. Matrices are represented by sparse quadtrees of chunk objects. The leaves in the hierarchy are block-sparse submatrices. Sparsity is dynamically detected by the matrix library and may occur at any level in the hierarchy and/or within the submatrix leaves. In case graphics processing units (GPUs) are available, both CPUs and GPUs are used for leaf-level multiplication work, thus making use of the full computing capacity of each node. The performance is evaluated for matrices with different sparsity structures, including examples from electronic structure calculations. Compared to methods that do not exploit data locality, our locality-aware approach reduces communication significantly, achieving essentially constant communication per node in weak scaling tests.

(Ramshaw and Marcus, 1995) have introduced a "convenient" data representation for chunking by converting it to a tagging task. In this paper we will examine seven different data representations for the problem of recognizing noun phrase chunks. We will show that the the data representation choice has a minor influence on chunking performance. We propose Chunks and Tasks, a parallel programming model built on abstractions for both data and work. The application programmer specifies how data and work can be split into smaller pieces, chunks and tasks, respectively. The Chunks and Tasks library maps the chunks and tasks to physical resources. In this way we seek to combine user friendliness with high performance. An application programmer can express a parallel algorithm using a few simple building blocks, defining data and work objects and their relationships. No explicit communication calls are needed; the distribution of both work and data is handled by the Chunks and Tasks library. This makes efficient implementation of complex applications that require dynamic distribution of work and data easier. At the same time, Chunks and Tasks imposes restrictions on data access and task dependencies that facilitates the development of high performance parallel back ends. We discuss the fundamental abstractions underlying the programming model, as well as performance and fault resilience considerations. We also present a pilot C++ library implementation for clusters of multicore machines and demonstrate its performance for sparse blocked matrix-matrix multiplication.

The study explores the psychological reality of chunks for EFL Chinese students. Speech samples from three various proficiency groups are examined with the help of the computer program Cool Edit 2.0, and speaking fluency is thus determined. It is found out that speaking fluency is not linear, and fluent subjects can use, store and retrieve chunks of sentence builders as one single unit while non-fluent ones cannot, which can be attested by the fact that fluent subjects do not or seldom pause frequently within chunks of sentence builders and thus not break them up. These findings suggest that chunks are psychologically real for Chinese EFL students, and chunks should be combined into EFL learning and teaching in China.

This implies that OCC are superior to CC for shorter chunks. Simulations consistent with the theoretical results are also presented, suggesting great potential for the application of OCC for multimedia transmission over packet networks.

Every winter, community services in Russia try to struggle against snow and ice on the roofs of buildings in Russian cities and towns. However, as it usually happens, man is too weak to win the fight with the power of nature. Roofs of residential buildings may crack and collapse under the weight of snow and ice. News reports about such incidents appear in Russia on a regular basis during winter time, and videos showing piles of snow falling down to the ground from rooftops go viral on the Internet. However, chunks of ice, snow and icicles may at times injure and even kill unsuspecting people, including children. For the time being, there is no information as per how many people have been killed this winter in Russia as a result of such tragic incidents.
