The 1991 Gordon Conference on Chronobiology was held at the Swabian Conference Center in Irsee, Germany, from September 29 to October 4, 1991. The possibility of holding the conference in Europe was known at the previous (1989) meeting, and conferees voted to do so if the opportunity materialized. Probably more than most, the field of chronobiology embraces many subdisciplines, ranging from molecular biology and genetics to physiology and ecology. It is also diverse in terms of biological material, including all Kingdoms and spanning the phylogenetic spectrum. It is relevant to many specific missions, such as medicine and pharmacology, agriculture and insect control, as well as marine biology and oceanography. The program (attached) thus reflects the wish and the willingness of workers in this area to consider a diversity of functions and a diversity of systems, ranging from nitrogen fixation in bacteria, photosynthesis and luminescence in marine dinoflagellates and CAB gene expression in wheat, to conidiation in Neurospora, eclosion in Drosophila, and activity in rodents and man.

Our research program aims to understand the mechanisms by which major neurotransmitter pathways regulate the biological clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the mammalian brain. Our model species is the rat. The specific progress made by each of the three students supported by the AASERT award in FY1 is summarized below. Each of these students has maintained satisfactory grades and progress toward their degree requirements during the funding period.

The Gordon Research Conference on Chronobiology was held from April 30 till May 5 at the hotel II Cioccio, Barga, Italy. Applications for participation were received from 179 scientists, and 144 eventually attended the conference (Appendix A). Of these, 30.9% were graduate students and postdocs, and 41.7% were women. Countries of origin were distributed worldwide: 33% USA and Canada; 50% Western Europe; 4% Eastern Europe; 13% Australia, Asia, South America). Chronobiology is a strongly multidisciplinary field of research. This was reflected in the program of the conference, which spanned the breadth from human circadian rhythms to molecular analysis of rhythms in basteria. The program (appendix B) listed 25 speakers and 9 discussion leaders. In addition to the oral presentations there were four daily poster sessions, during which a total of 85 posters was presented. These were actively attended and led to vivid information exchange and many new contacts between research groups worldwide.

Abstract The clinical observations of diurnal variation of mood and early morning awakening in depression have been incorporated into established diagnostic systems, as has the seasonal modifier defining winter depression (seasonal affective disorder, SAD). Many circadian rhythms measured in depressive patients are abnormal: earlier in timing, diminished in amplitude, or of greater variability. Whether these disturbances are of etiological significance for the role of circadian rhythms in mood disorders, or a consequence of altered behavior can only be dissected out with stringent protocols (eg, constant routine or forced desynchrony). These protocols quantify contributions of the circadian pacemaker and a homeostatic sleep process impacting on mood, energy, appetite, and sleep. Future studies will elucidate any allelic mutations in “circadian clock” –related or “sleep”-related genes in depression. With respect to treatment, antidepressants and mood stabilizers have no consistent effect on circadian rhythmicity. The most rapid antidepressant modality known so far is nonpharmacological: total or partial sleep deprivation in the second half of the night. The disadvantage of sleep deprivation, that most patients relapse after recovery sleep, can be prevented by coadministration of lithium, pindolol, serotonin (5-HT) reuptake inhibitors, bright light, or a subsequent phase-advance procedure. Phase advance of the sleep-wake cycle alone also has rapid effects on depressed mood, which lasts longer than sleep deprivation. Light is the treatment of choice for SAD and may prove to be useful for nonseasonal depression, alone or as an adjunct to medication. Chronobiological concepts emphasize the important role of zeitgebers to stabilize phase, light being the most important, but dark (and rest) periods, regularity of social schedules and meal times, and use of melatonin or its analogues should also be considered. Advances in chronobiology continue to contribute novel treatments for affective disorders.

As will emerge from the definitions themselves, concern herein revolves around the resolution in time, largely but not exclusively by electronic computation, of physiologic mechanisms, (e.g., an adrenal cycle) with biochemical components, (e.g., known CRF, ACTH and corticosteroids) in anatomical locations (among others, in the pararenal region).  The circadian "cell" cycle, adrenal cycle and the superimposed controls of human beings or certain other life forms are cases in point.

The Gordon Research Conference on Chronobiology was held from August 9, 13, 1993 at Colby-Sawyer College, New London, New Hampshire. There were 169 applications to attend (to my knowledge, the largest number since the Chronobiology conference began in 1978). Of the 150 which could be accommodated and accepted, a total of 143 ultimately attended (Appendix A). Conferees came from 24 states; a little over 20% of the total represented 13 foreign countries, including two from former East Bloc nations; and nearly 30% of the participants were women. Graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, junior investigators, and senior scientists were all represented. Report contains full program and complete list of attendees.

One Hundred and fourteen scientist attended the 1989 Gordon Conference on Chronobiology. The program brought together people working at all levels of organization from molecular biology to ecological significance of temporal organization. Two general themes emerged. The first concerned the importance of feedback from circadian rhythm effectors onto the timing system. The second dealt with the significance of the fact that the phase response curves to a variety of phase shifting stimuli appear to fall into only two classes.

The bulk of Chronobiology International research articles describe results from studies on laboratory animals and humans. The editors and readers of the journal expect writers to have made significant contributions to biological rhythm and related research via ethical research and honest reporting of results. Scientific authors must declare any possible conflicts of interest. The journal exclusively accepts original articles that have not been published elsewhere, save as short abstracts. The journal and its editors encourage investigators to follow the principles of the World Medical Association's Declaration of Helsinki and the Institute for Laboratory Animal Research's Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Chronobiology International judges whether or not the research techniques used in a publication meet the criteria of good research practice. This article updates Chronobiology International's ethical principles, standards, and processes for submissions including human and animal biological rhythm research, both in terms of quality chronobiology research and compassionate and ethical study on humans and animals.
