This is an interview with Kathy Mallet and Wendy Prince about their work with early child development and families.

Creativity is thought to be the “building block” of every classroom. Although educators deem this to be true, many still fail to integrate creative arts activities such as visual and performing arts, music, dance, and movement into their own classrooms. Majority of the studies on creativity have focused on white middle-class children. More often than not, these have also been conducted in the U.S. Thus, the current study evaluates if and how creative arts activities are effective for aiding in the development of children, and if these should be integrated into school curricula in the Philippines. Using a mixed-method approach, parents, teachers, and school administrators of 3-5 year-olds in the Philippines will be interviewed. The semi-structured interviews will explore the perceptions of creativity and its integration into the lives of the children around them. The data collected will then be analyzed using thematic coding, which groups together similar patterns found in the responses which will be used to formulate key themes. Survey data will also be collected from teachers to explore the correlation among how the caregivers, teachers, and administrators’ creativity, perception of creativity, and understanding of child development. Due to most research on this topic being conducted in Western countries, this study serves as an entry point for further studies to be done in relation to those from other places. This will allow for more information to be collected on the learning needs of students based on their cultural and contextual differences.

Previous evidence suggested that high fat dairy products consumption during pregnancy and lactation were associated with lower composition of linoleic acid in breast milk (Jonsson et al. 2016; Park et al. 1999). From our previous evidence, high linoleic acid in breast milk, leading to an unbalanced ratio of PUFA n-6 to PUFA n-3, was associated with a poorer cognitive development in children (Bernard et al. 2015; Bernard et al. 2017). Tissue composition of certain odd chain fatty acids (OCS-Fas), heptadecanoic (C17:0) and pentadecanoic (C15:0) acids are related to dairy fat intake. Using these biomarkers, potential benefit of maternal dairy fat intake on children cognitive development can be studied. Besides of their potential indirect effect, C17:0 and C15:0 were associated with lower risk of sclerosis, coronary heart disease, type II diabetes mellitus and cancer (Jenkins, West, and Koulman 2015). It was hypothesized that OCS-FAs increase membrane fluidity. By their ability to pass through the placental barrier and into breastmilk (Gozzo et al. 1982), it has been suggested that OCS-FAs could cross the cerebral endothelium as well and influence early postnatal brain development (Jenkins, West, and Koulman 2015).

In the past decades, an increasing number of Dutch parents made use of early non-parental child care (ENPCC), where babies and young children are systematically cared for by caregivers other than their parents (NJI, 2022). In what way ENPCC impacts the social-emotional development of children is the topic of an ongoing societal and scientific debate (Arace et al., 2021). Social-emotional development (SED) comprises social competence as well as (the absence of) internalizing and externalizing problems (Linberg et al., 2020). Currently, research findings on the effects of ENPCC on SED are divergent: Some studies report a positive effect (Lekhal, 2012; Stolk et al., 2013) or fail to find a link (Love et al, 2003). However, most studies found that ENPCC is negatively related to SED (Albers et al., 2016; Averdijk, Ribeaud, & Eisner, 2022; Van Beijsterveldt, Hudziak, & Boomsma, 2005; Beijers et al., 2013; NICHD, 2003). As studies vary in what aspects of ENPCC are considered, research that includes multiple aspects of ENPCC is needed to work towards a conclusive answer on the effect of ENPCC on SED. Differential Effects Depending on Age of Entry, Childcare Setting, Quantity and Arrangement Multiplicity Several aspects of ENPCC are found to predict problems in SED. The age that children first enter ENPCC matters, with younger age of entry being related to more negative outcomes (Linberg et al., 2020). Infants are only starting to develop the skills necessary to benefit from peer interactions (Linberg et al., 2020). The absence of the primary caregiver in combination with exposure to peers might overstretch the social capacity of infants, thereby compromising SED. Furthermore, center-based settings (Averdijk, Ribeaud, & Eisner, 2022; Beijers et al., 2013; Crockenberg, & Leerkes, 2005), more hours spent in ENPCC (Averdijk, Ribeaud, & Eisner, 2022; Beijers et al., 2013; Fort, Ichino, & Zanella, 2020) and a greater number of separate care arrangements that a child routinely experiences during a week (Bratsch-Hines et al., 2017; Claessens & Chen, 2013) are all associated with more negative social emotional outcomes. Child Temperament and Parenting as Moderators Previous research found that individual differences in temperament can moderate the effect of ENPCC on SED (Beijers et al., 2013; Crockenberg, & Leerkes, 2005; Fukkink, 2022; Jilinka & Fukkink, 2017). This is in line with the dual risk framework, which proposes that children with difficult temperaments (i.e., negative mood and low adaptability) are more vulnerable to stressful environments than children with an easy temperament (Belsky, 1997; Linberg et al., 2020). Furthermore, a study found that children from low-risk families, characterized by positive parenting, had a stronger stress response to childcare than children from high-risk families (Berry et al., 2014). Early life stress in turn has been linked to problems with SED later in life (Bolton et al., 2017). A possible explanation why children that experience positive parenting are more vulnerable, is that the contrast between the family context and ENPCC, where a secure attachment relationship and meaningful one-on-one interactions are less common, might be too great. Aim of the current study Currently, there is no conclusive research on the relationships between ENPCC and SED, as existing studies mostly do not take the multifaceted aspects of ENPCC and the role of child temperament into account. Therefore, this study will look at multiple aspects of ENPCC and be the first to consider parenting as a moderator. Closing this knowledge gap will contribute to a conclusive answer on the effect of ENPCC on SED, which can guide parents and policymakers in their decision-making. We will investigate whether (different aspects of) ENPCC during infancy predicts SED in toddlerhood and whether this relationship is moderated by child temperament and parenting. The following hypotheses will be tested: (1) ENPCC during infancy is related to less social competence and more problem behavior in toddlerhood. For children that are exposed to EPNCC, (2) center-based care, (3) more hours in non-parental care, (4) a higher number of concurrent arrangements per week and (5) a younger age of entry are negatively related to SED. In addition, negative effects of non-parental care (6) are strongest in children with a difficult temperament and (7) children growing up in a more supportive and stimulating parenting environment.

As the urban settings become more common across the world and also become the places where more children grow up, the role of urban context in child development gains more importance (UNICEF, 2018). Despite the significant role of urban environments on child development (Kağitçibaşi, 2007; Kagitcibasi & Ataca, 2005), there has been very limited attention directed on how urbanization impact child development in developmental psychology. The aim of the present study is to fill this gap in the literature by particularly focusing on how urban context affects cognitive development. TIMELINE The data was collected between 16th of May and 31st of July, 2022. Visual inspection of data quality (e.g., histograms of variables) was assessed during August, 2022. Pre-registration was performed by the research team on 9th of September in Thimpu, Bhutan. No analysis or correlations were performed on the data up until this point. VARIABLES OF INTEREST: Child Development: Cognitive development of children aged between 3 and 5 is measured by SON-R 2-8, which is a non-verbal intelligence test (Tellegen et al., 2018). Urbanization: Families were asked to report their migration history during the last 10 years (when and where). This migration history will be used to calculate two urbanization related variables: 1) urban exposure (UE) and 2) change in urbanization across years (UAY). Urban exposure is defined as the extent to which the family and/or children are exposed to urban environment. Urban exposure will be measured by calculating the area under the curve demonstrating the relationship between changing level of urbanicity in the places where the family lived (i.e., on the y-axis) across years (i.e., on the x-axis). Change in urbanization will be measured by extracting the  value from the regression line fitting to the same curve demonstrating the relationship between level of urbanicity and time. Poverty: Poverty is measured by calculating the household income divided by total number of household members [ b_1_21 / (b_1_18 + b_1_19)]. Additionally, Mental and Emotional Wellbeing questionnaire (h_3_i) is used to investigate the parents/caregivers’ perception of their financial status. It is measured by calculating the average score of Mental and Emotional Wellbeing questionnaire (h_3_i) by the following formula [( h_2_12 + h_2_13+ h_2_14+ h_2_15 + h_2_16)/5]. ANALYSIS PLAN A series of general linear models will be performed to answer research questions. For each step, predictors that have p-value higher than .1 in the prior analysis will be removed in order to facilitate simplicity and to avoid model overloading. Analysis will be performed in a stepwise manner, as explained below. First model will include the variables of urbanization (i.e., urban exposure and change in urbanization), poverty (i.e., income and perception of financial status), age and gender as factors (covariates) on child development (SON-R 2-8). In this model, urbanization measure will be based on the migration history of the last ten years (i.e., 2013-2022) which can be viewed as the migration history of the parents. Second model will be tested but this time the urbanization measure will depend on the migration history of children. In other words, time scale of migration history will begin from the year that the child was born (i.e., birth year of the child- 2022). It is important to note here that parents/caregivers and/or their spouses who are civil servants in Bhutan are excluded from the sample of the first two models. The main reason for such exclusion criteria is that the motivation of migration for these families who move because of a duty assignment differ from the families who move due to urbanization-related reasons (e.g., better economic and social opportunities). Third model will be run on the sample consisting of civil servants only by keeping the same variables that are included in the previous models. Whether the parents/caregivers (first model) or children’s migration history (second model) will be used as urbanization measure in the third model will be determined by comparing the explained variance in the first two models. The migration history that has more explained variance in the model will be chosen for the third model. The third model (i.e., sample only including the civil servants) is expected to function as a control group where the effects of urbanization will be washed out because in Bhutan, civil servants keep their social and economic benefits provided by the government regardless of where they live. At the final step, a fourth model will be run on 10 000 permutation samples of non-civil servant group (i.e., by using Monte Carlo method) equal in the size of the civil servant group.
