Korea has experienced a large influx of marriage migrants resulting from an increase in international marriages over the past couple of decades (Sung et al., 2013). This has resulted in a tripling of the number of adolescents of immigrant descent, reaching 5,323,075 in 2021, compared to 2012 (Korean Ministry of Education & Korean Educational Development Institute, 2021). Adolescence is a critical period to establish feelings of belonging, values, and attitudes toward their cultural groups (Phinney et al., 2001). However, these developmental tasks can be particularly challenging for adolescents of immigrant descent who must learn how to navigate and negotiate between their heritage and mainstream cultures and move across the multiple worlds created by family, ethnic group, schools, peers, and community, while undergoing biological, social, and psychological changes related to puberty (Motti‐Stefanidi et al., 2008; Titzmann & Lee, 2018; Jugert et al., 2020). Sometimes, the tasks involve combining contrasting moral worldviews and normative expectations (Verkuyten et al., 2019). Unfortunately, very little research has tracked changes in the cultural orientation of immigrant descendants throughout adolescence. This study is designed to identify cultural orientation profiles of adolescents of immigrant descent and track changes in their profiles from early to late adolescence. For this, latent profile analysis (LPA) and latent transition analysis (LTA) will be applied using the first, fifth, and ninth waves (spanning nine years) of the Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study (MAPS) data collected from adolescents of immigrant descent in Korea. The analyses will address three questions: (1) How many latent profiles are identified regarding the cultural orientation of adolescents of immigrant descent in South Korea, and what are the major trends in the changes in cultural orientation profiles? (2) How do demographic characteristics (gender, origin country of a foreign parent, family income, and family language) predict the cultural orientation profile membership at each time point and the transition probabilities between the cultural orientation profiles over time? (3) What is the difference in life satisfaction according to the cultural orientation profile membership? Extant acculturation studies of immigrant youth have been primarily conducted in Western individualistic societies that are diverse and multicultural, with long histories of receiving immigrants and refugees (Cho, 2016). Thus, the implications and findings of these studies may not be applicable to different cultural settings, such as those in Korea, where the population is predominantly monolingual and mono-ethnic with a strong collectivistic culture (Chang & Wallace, 2015). Additionally, Korea's policies have been geared towards encouraging immigrants to assimilate into Korean culture, which may have influenced the cultural orientation of adolescents of immigrant descent (Cho, 2016). Currently, acculturation research needs more experimental and longitudinal designs to provide causal evidence (Kunst, 2021). Through this study, we will be able to understand the dynamic change in the cultural orientation of adolescents of immigrant descent in Korea. By understanding the characteristics and development process of the cultural orientation of immigrant adolescents, we can discuss ways to support their psychological and sociocultural adjustment.

This study aims to identify neural activation within brain regions involved in food-associated memory encoding and retrieval and investigate if a two-week prebiotic (high-fibre) diet modulates food memory, specifically brain activity in memory, reward, and homeostatic control regions. This study will determine reward enhancement and calorie bias among participants with overweight or obesity. We establish if differential effects are mediated by changes in the gut microbiome such as microbial diversity and/or abundance. Advice Response Theory expands the theoretical horizons in exercise psychology by providing the perspective that, in addition to evaluating the notion of exercise in response to an exercise stimulus, people also evaluate the characteristics of the exercise advice and the advisor; thus, the output of exercise stimulus includes not only exercise-related decision-making but also advice outcomes such as perceived advice quality and trust in the advisor. Second, the present research joins the endeavor in the literature on human-computer interaction that examines the impact of a chatbot’s empathic responses on user outcomes and research examining how design characteristics of virtual health assistants affect user experience. Our research is one of the first attempts to apply the theoretical framework of Advice Response Theory in investigating user outcomes in human-chatbot interactions. We seek to bridge the current knowledge gap regarding how user experience is affected by chatbot design— specifically, the research goal is to understand whether the effect of empathy backfires in human-chatbot interactions in the context of an embarrassing service encounter. Our findings will help improve the understanding of how chatbots can be properly implemented in healthcare to increase patient engagement and improve healthcare experience.

People who put money high on their priority list are more at risk for depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. So why is it that we think that money is going to help us feel happier?

A group of younger and older adults read words/pseudowords/acronyms/illegal strings while EEG was measured. Neighborhood size effects and repetition effects were measured. Older adults showed the same N400 increase with greater neighborhood size, but revealed reduced N400 repetition effects than younger adults. This suggests intact network structure but differences in the dynamics with increased age.

She referenced the board’s internal conflicts and a desire to have new energy on the board as some of the reasons for her departure. “I am entirely grateful for this experience. I’ve had the enormous pleasure working with extraordinary educators, administrators, parents, community members and students and i look forward to continuing that work for the next two months and in other capacities later on,” said Price. Price was first elected in 2003 and is currently serving in her fourth term. The board will now begin the process to fill her vacancy. Also announced at the meeting was the appointment of Bob Ross as the district’s Chief Operating Officer. Ross currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education in 203, a position he has held since 2012. “I’m very proud to work for District 203, when I tell people where I work it’s a very easy thing to say and something I’m very proud of and I want to say thank you very much,” said Ross. Ross will begin this new role on July 1, 2016. Naperville News 17’s Evan Summers reports.

While it is almost universally accepted that health deteriorates as part of the normal ageing process, substantial heterogeneity exists in ageing trajectories (1). Individuals with mental disorders, on average, die prematurely (2) and there is evidence of differences in objective health measures such as hand-grip strength compared to healthy controls. Several studies have examined age-related variation in physical and physiological measures (3-5). However, less is known about health trajectories in individuals with mental disorders. The aim of this study is to examine associations between age and multiple physiological health measures in a large sample from the UK Biobank, and to assess whether there is evidence of differences in the trajectories of individuals with and without lifetime bipolar disorder. All analyses will be conducted separately in males and females.

Edward Granville Browne, born in Stouts Hill, Uley, Gloucestershire, England, was a British orientalist who published numerous articles and books of academic value, mainly in the areas of history and literature. His works are respected for their scholarship, uniqueness, and style. He published in areas which few other Western scholars had explored to any sufficient degree. He used a language and style that showed high respect for everybody, even toward those he personally did not view in positive light. In A Year Amongst the Persians (1893) he wrote a sympathetic portrayal of a Persian society which few Westerners had ever seen, including a frank account of the effects of opium. It did not attract the attention it deserved at the time of its initial publication, but after his death in 1926 it was reprinted and became a classic in English travel literature. A Year Amongst the Persians includes moving accounts of the Bahá’í community in Iran. Concerning his meetings with the Bahá’ís of Iran, Browne writes: “The memory of those assemblies can never fade from my mind; the recollection of those faces and those tones no time can efface. I have gazed with awe on the workings of a mighty Spirit, and I marvel whereunto it tends”.<br><br>Edward G. Browne referred to Bahá’ís as Bábís, but this was a mistake on his part. Siyyid ‘Alí-Muhammad-i-Shírází (1819-1850), known as the “Báb”, which is Arabic for “Gate”, proclaimed that He was the Promised One of Islám. He declared His mission in 1844 and was executed by the Persian government in 1850. His followers were known as Bábís. The Báb also proclaimed that He was the Gate, Herald and Forerunner of an even greater Manifestation of God who would come after Him, the Promised One of all religions and Return of Christ in the Glory of the Father. In 1863, Mírzá Husyan-‘Alí-yi-Núrí (1817-1892), known as Bahá’u’lláh (Arabic for “The Glory of God”), proclaimed that He was the Promised One foretold by the Báb. By the time Browne arrived in Iran, most Bábís had already accepted Bahá’u’lláh as the Promised One and were now known as Bahá’ís. A small group of Bábís, led by Mírzá Yahyá Núrí, known as Azal, who was Bahá’u’lláh’s younger half-brother, rejected these claims. Azal is notorious for poisoning his own Brother (i.e. Bahá’u’lláh) as well as trying to assassinate other enemies on numerous occasions. While the Báb had made Azal His nominal successor, this was only until the Promised One were to appear, upon which time Azal’s authority was supposed to cease. Most Bábís realised Azal’s depravity and turned to Bahá’u’lláh, whose character and spirituality were unsurpassed. Browne was sympathetic to Azal’s claims but was also impressed by the spirituality of the Bahá’í community. The followers of Azal (sometimes spelled Ezel) were known as Azalís.<br><br>While Browne’s sympathetic views on Azal were misguided, he made a great contribution to Bahá’í studies through his translations of historical works and his accounts of the Bahá’í community. Amongst Persians, at a time when nearly the whole nation was highly suspicious of foreigners, and in particular of any British or Russian person due to the political dynamics of that time, Edward Browne was well accepted by the people who knew him and his works. LibriVox volunteers bring you 13 recordings of An Ode by Táhirih (Fátimih Baraghání) (1814/1817 – 1852), Translated by Edward Granville Browne (1862 – 1926). This was the Fortnightly Poetry project for February 7th, 2010.<br /><br /> Fátimih Baraghání (1814/1817 – 1852), also known by the titles of Táhirih (Arabic for “The Pure One”) and Qurratu’l-‘Ayn (Arabic for “Consolation of the Eyes”) was an influential Iranian poet and Bábí heroine from the town of Qazvín. Her legacy is important to Bahá’ís, as well as supporters of women’s rights in Iran. In 1844, she became the seventeenth disciple or “Letter of the Living” of the Báb (1819-1850). As the only woman in this initial group of disciples, she is often compared to Mary Magdalene. From June-July 1848, she attended the Conference of Badasht where she appeared without a veil in public (a shocking statement of women’s rights) and declared that a new religious dispensation had been inaugurated. Coincidentally, shortly after this, the Seneca Falls Convention (an important women’s rights convention) was held in New York on the 19th-20th of July, 1848. She was executed in Tehran in 1852. Before her death, she said that although she would be killed, they could not stop the emancipation of women. Edward Granville Browne described her thus: “The appearance of such a woman as Qurratu’l-‘Ayn is in any country and any age a rare phenomenon, but in such a country as Persia it is a prodigy—nay, almost a miracle. Alike in virtue of her marvellous beauty, her rare intellectual gifts, her fervid eloquence her fearless devotion, and her glorious martyrdom, she stands forth incomparable and immortal amidst her countrywomen.” This poem is a ghazal composed in the Kámil metre. A ghazal may be understood as a poetic expression of both the pain of loss or separation and the beauty of love in spite of that pain. Browne notes that this poem appears to be addressed to the Báb. 5Religio Medici and Hydriotaphia

Religio Medici (The Religion of a Doctor) sets out Sir Thomas Browne's spiritual testament as well as being an early psychological self-portrait. In its day, the book was a European best-seller. It was published in 1643 by the newly-qualified physician, and its unorthodox views placed it swiftly upon the Papal Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1645. Although predominantly concerned with Christian faith, the Religio also meanders into digressions upon alchemy, hermetic philosophy, astrology, and physiognomy.<br/><br/> Hydriotaphia, Urn Burial, or a Discourse of the Sepulchral Urns lately found in Norfolk, was published in 1658. Its nominal subject was the discovery of a Roman urn burial in Norfolk. The discovery of these remains prompts Browne to deliver, first, a careful description of the antiquities found, and then a careful survey of most of the burial and funerary customs, ancient and current, of which his era was aware. The most famous part of the work, though, is the fifth chapter, where Browne quite explicitly turns to discuss man's struggles with mortality, and the uncertainty of his fate and fame in this world and the next, to produce an extended funerary meditation tinged with melancholia. The changes wrought by time and eternity, the fleetingness of mortal fame, and our feeble attempts to cope with the certainty of death are Browne's subjects. Yet, at the same time, Browne can be tersely witty, mocking human vainglory. A piece of exquisite baroque prose that George Saintsbury called "the longest piece, perhaps, of absolutely sublime rhetoric to be found in the prose literature of the world," Hydriotaphia displays an astonishing command of English prose rhythm and diction. Once they reached young manhood, one of these fulfilled his father's wish. The story takes off from there, and, while all three continued to be very close to one another as they grew older, the married man was sent abroad on business, allowing his friend to take care of his wife and child while he was away. While overseas, the married man fell into temptation. Many twists and turns, as well as surprises were to follow, rendering the reader curious as to how it would all turn out. (Roger Melin)
