12Exergy And Economic Analyses Of Indirect Coal-to-liquid Technology Coupling Carbon Capture And Storage
By Li Zhou, Maosheng Duan and Yadong Yu
Coal-to-liquids (CTL) technology has been developed steadily for producing gasoline and diesel fuels as the demand for energy security issue and liquid fuels in China outpaces production capacities. In this light, given the importance of CO2 emissions in climate change, carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) is considered as an integral part of CTL processes. In this study, CTL coupling with CCS technology (CTL-CCS) were simulated using the Aspen Plus software. Based on it, this study conducted exergy and economic analyses to the CTL-CCS system for five different coal types, including anthracite, meager, lean, coking and gas. Results show that the exergy utilization ratios ranged from 40.3% to 43.7%, revealing only a limited effect of the choice of coal type; although anthracite, meager, and gas coal were marginally better. Results also indicate the largest sources of exergy loss to be firstly from gas generation and secondly from the combined process of synthesis and separation. The economic analysis compared the cost, net present value, internal rate of return, and payback period. The cost of liquid fuel produced by CTL-CCS system was in the range from 4117 to 5627 yuan RMB/t, indicating economic feasibility. The system using lean coal revealed the best economic performance, while those using coking coal and gas coal were the second best performers. This research suggests that gas coal can achieve relatively reasonable values for both the exergy utilization ratio and cost in comparison to other coal types processed through a coupled CTL-CCS system.

13Framing Effects On Public Attitudes To Carbon Capture And Storage In Denmark
By Mads Wædegaard and Sofie Hvemon
With fast-growing commercial-, political-, and professional interest in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in Denmark, we contribute to the literature by testing the effects of framing on public attitudes to CCS. To do so, we conduct a survey-experiment on a sample (n∼1000) of Danes that are randomized into three experimental groups (positive- vs. negative- vs. info-treatment). Developing the survey, we draw upon framing-theory (Entman, 1993 & 2003), issue-specific frames inspired by the SPEED-framework (Chaudhry et al., 2013) as well a quantitative frame analysis of media framing on CCS, counting the prevalence of ten different frames in a popularity-weighted clustered sample of Danish CCS articles from 1998-2022 (n=427). Furthermore, we investigate interactions between the CCS framing effects on public support and the respondents’ environmental attitudes, limits to growth-believes as well as the respondents' attitudes towards new technology and prior knowledge of CCS.

14Carbon Capture And Storage In Alberta (Part 2 Q&A)
By Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs (SACPA)
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) involves capturing CO2 from point-source surface facilities and injecting it into subsurface geological formations, particularly depleted oil and gas reservoirs, unmineable coal seams and deep saline aquifers. It is a key technology being considered and implemented to reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. In 2008 the government of Alberta committed $2B to accelerate CCS in the province, with the goal of having four CCS projects operating by 2015, each storing about 1 million tonnes of CO2 per year. Current targets are to have 50 million tonnes of CO2 stored in geological formations annually by 2020 and 139 million tonnes annually by 2050. Of paramount importance to CCS is the ability to track the injected CO2 plume in the storage formation and to verify safe and permanent storage of the CO2. These goals are vital for public acceptance of CCS particularly during early projects as the technology becomes implemented at commercial scale. A comprehensive range of technologies exists for monitoring CO2 injection and storage but continued research and development is being undertaken for next generation technologies. Current Alberta CCS projects and aspects of monitoring research will be discussed in this presentation. Speaker: Don C. Lawton, Ph.D., P. Geoph.Don Lawton is a Professor of Geophysics and Chair in Exploration Geophysics in the Department of Geoscience at the University of Calgary. He previously served as Head of the Department from 1997 to 2002. His research interests include geological storage of CO2, acquisition, processing and interpretation of seismic data, and integrated geophysical and geological studies in the Rocky Mountain Foothills. He is an Associate Director of the Consortium for Research in Elastic Wave Exploration Seismology (CREWES) and was recently appointed Theme Lead in Secure Carbon Storage for Carbon Management Canada, a $25M National Centre of Excellence. He is involved in research for a number of carbon capture and storage projects in Alberta.

By K. Arning, J. Offermann-van Heek, A. Linzenich, A. Kaetelhoen, A. Sternberg, A. Bardow and M. Ziefle
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) are two CO 2 -based technologies aiming at mitigating climate change by capturing and either permanently storing CO 2 (CCS) or using it as a feedstock (CCU) for commercial products, e.g., chemicals, fuels, or plastic products. Whereas the implementation of CCS has attracted considerable public opposition in Europe and the US, the CCU-technology is still in an early development stage. This research takes a social science perspective and investigates the awareness, general perception and acceptance of CCS in comparison to CCU by applying an online survey in Germany (2017, n = 509). In addition, the risk perception of single steps in the CCU/CCS process chains was explored (CCS: CO 2 -capturing, CO 2 -transport, CO 2 -storage; CCU: CO 2 -capturing, CO 2 -transport, temporary CO 2 -storage, production, product usage, product disposal). Significant differences were found for the perception and acceptance of CCS and CCU: while both technologies were generally accepted, CCU was perceived significantly more positively than CCS. CCS-acceptance was negatively influenced by storage and transport risks; for CCU, disposal and product risks decreased acceptance. Our results contribute to the development of communication concepts for a successful implementation of CO 2 -based technologies by considering public concerns.

18Germany's “No” To Carbon Capture And Storage: Just A Question Of Lacking Acceptance?
By Stefan Vögele, Dirk Rübbelke, Philip Mayer and Wilhelm Kuckshinrichs
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is frequently regarded as a promising approach to mitigate global warming. Yet, by and by CCS is losing political support. The key reason for that is largely seen in the lack of public acceptance for this technology. The absence of public acceptance, in turn, is in particular due to the environmental risks ascribed to CCS and the adverse effects this technology may create with respect to the development of renewable energy technologies. However, the effects of CCS are manifold and an adequate evaluation of this technology should take into account relevant aspects as comprehensively as possible. Since sustainability indicators are not the only ones stakeholders are interested in, attention also has to be paid to further indicators. By means of a multi-criteria analysis considering different scenarios, we investigate the consequences of the application of CCS in Germany that may serve as an alternative to an extension in the use of renewable energies. In doing so, we employ a set of indicators that also include factors distinct from sustainably indicators. The results show that there is a broad range of factors causing the future of CCS in the German power sector to look gloomy.

24An Efficient Approach To Separate CO 2 Using Supersonic Flows For Carbon Capture And Storage
By Chuang Wen, Nikolas Karvounis, Jens Honore Walther, Yuying Yan, Yuqing Feng and Yan Yang
The mitigation of CO 2 emissions is an effective measure to solve the climate change issue. In the present study, we propose an alternative approach for CO 2 capture by employing supersonic flows. For this purpose, we first develop a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to predict the CO 2 condensing flow in a supersonic nozzle. Adding two transport equations to describe the liquid fraction and droplet number, the detailed numerical model can describe the heat and mass transfer characteristics during the CO 2 phase change process under the supersonic expansion conditions. A comparative study is performed to evaluate the effect of CO 2 condensation using the condensation model and dry gas assumption. The results show that the developed CFD model predicts accurately the distribution of the static temperature contrary to the dry gas assumption. Furthermore, the condensing flow model predicts a CO 2 liquid fraction up to 18.6% of the total mass, which leads to the release of the latent heat to the vapour phase. The investigation performed in this study suggests that the CO 2 condensation in supersonic flows provides an efficient and eco-friendly way to mitigate the CO 2 emissions to the environment.

36Factors Shaping Public Acceptance And Policy Preferences For Carbon Capture And Storage In The United States
By Mahelet G Fikru, Paige Ellefsen, Nhien Nguyen and Ting Shen
The transition to a low-carbon economy is a critical global imperative to combat climate change, with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) emerging as a key technology in this endeavor. In recognition of this several jurisdictions and states are designing legislative frameworks and new policy incentives to encourage energy producers and other industrial facilities to manage their carbon emissions via CCS technologies. Despite the growing interest in supporting/facilitating CCS investments, it is not well understood what type of policy options (e.g., mandates, carbon penalties, subsidies, etc.) are most favored by the public and what shapes the public’s preference for policy options. In addition, studies show that uncertainties regarding supporting policy frameworks, public opposition, and negative perceptions toward CCS projects have created challenges in the acceptance of CCS as an option to achieve climate change goals. This study aims to understand factors that shape public acceptance and policy preference for carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects in the US. First, we examine what factors influence the support for developing more CCS projects. Second, we examine what factors shape the public’s preference for different policy options when it comes to achieving a low or net-zero carbon economy.

45Uncovering Attitudes Towards Carbon Capture Storage And Utilization Technologies In Germany: Insights Into Affective-cognitive Evaluations Of Benefits And Risks
By Anika Linzenich, Katrin Arning, Julia Offermann-van Heek and Martina Ziefle
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon capture and utilization (CCU) are technologies which aim at mitigating climate change and saving fossil resources: CO 2 emissions from industrial plants are captured and stored underground (CCS) or used for the manufacturing of products (CCU). In contrast to CCS, CCU is less about the reduction of CO 2 emissions, since the global demand for feedstock CO 2 to be used for CCU products is considerably lower than the CO 2 emissions produced worldwide. Moreover, the CO 2 is only temporarily stored until the disposal of the CCU products. Instead, a reduction of fossil resources in product manufacturing is the primary goal for CCU. The successful roll-out of CCS and CCU is not solely determined by technical feasibility but also depends on public acceptance. Research has shown that acceptance of energy technologies is impacted by laypersons’ attitudes. So far, little is known about differences in affective and cognitive evaluations of CCU in comparison to CCS. To address this research gap, an online survey was conducted in Germany (n = 449), in which affective and cognitive evaluation profiles for CCS and CCU were compared. Also, it was explored whether attitudes towards CCS are predictive of CCU acceptance. Results revealed basically similar evaluation profiles for CCS and CCU but CCU was rated significantly more positively. Comparing results for CCS supporters and opponents, it was found that CCS supporters rated CCU similarly positive whereas CCS opponents evaluated CCU significantly better than CCS. The findings can be used for communication concepts tailored to laypeople's requirements and concerns and yield implications for industrial policy-making.

46The Environmental And Economic Sustainability Of Carbon Capture And Storage.
By Hardisty, Paul E., Sivapalan, Mayuran and Brooks, Peter
This article is from International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health , volume 8 . Abstract For carbon capture and storage (CCS) to be a truly effective option in our efforts to mitigate climate change, it must be sustainable. That means that CCS must deliver consistent environmental and social benefits which exceed its costs of capital, energy and operation; it must be protective of the environment and human health over the long term; and it must be suitable for deployment on a significant scale. CCS is one of the more expensive and technically challenging carbon emissions abatement options available, and CCS must first and foremost be considered in the context of the other things that can be done to reduce emissions, as a part of an overall optimally efficient, sustainable and economic mitigation plan. This elevates the analysis beyond a simple comparison of the cost per tonne of CO2 abated—there are inherent tradeoffs with a range of other factors (such as water, NOx, SOx, biodiversity, energy, and human health and safety, among others) which must also be considered if we are to achieve truly sustainable mitigation. The full life-cycle cost of CCS must be considered in the context of the overall social, environmental and economic benefits which it creates, and the costs associated with environmental and social risks it presents. Such analysis reveals that all CCS is not created equal. There is a wide range of technological options available which can be used in a variety of industries and applications—indeed CCS is not applicable to every industry. Stationary fossil-fuel powered energy and large scale petroleum industry operations are two examples of industries which could benefit from CCS. Capturing and geo-sequestering CO2 entrained in natural gas can be economic and sustainable at relatively low carbon prices, and in many jurisdictions makes financial sense for operators to deploy now, if suitable secure disposal reservoirs are available close by. Retrofitting existing coal-fired power plants, however, is more expensive and technically challenging, and the economic sustainability of post-combustion capture retrofit needs to be compared on a portfolio basis to the relative overall net benefit of CCS on new-build plants, where energy efficiency can be optimised as a first step, and locations can be selected with sequestration sites in mind. Examples from the natural gas processing, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and coal-fired power generation sectors, illustrate that there is currently a wide range of financial costs for CCS, depending on how and where it is applied, but equally, environmental and social benefits of emissions reduction can be considerable. Some CCS applications are far more economic and sustainable than others. CCS must be considered in the context of the other things that a business can do to eliminate emissions, such as far-reaching efforts to improve energy efficiency.

1Voyage en Corse
By Gracieux Faure
- Summary by Sonia
